But Meagen Ryan ’93, a four-year day student from Hampton, N.H., still reflects upon it occasionally when standing in front of a group in her current job as a marketing strategist or in her volunteer role as president of the Exeter Association of Washington, D.C. After religion class one day, Academy instructor Russell Weatherspoon asked her pointedly, “Why don’t you speak up more in class?” The question was followed by an equally simple but memorable statement:“You only speak up when you’re sure of something. This is your education and you need to be part of it.You are smart and you have something important to say. I am interested in what that is.” “Mr.Weatherspoon probably doesn’t remember that moment, but it has stayed with me for two reasons,” remembers Meagen.“First, it was a challenge. Second, Mr.Weatherspoon Ryan recognized something in me that was good and worthy. His comments jolted me out of my comfort zone, which was being content as a shy person. Whenever I am tempted to fall back on that—to use being shy as an excuse for not doing something—I remember Mr.Weatherspoon encouraging me to take a chance.” Those who know Meagen today find it hard to envision her as a timid student. They use words like “dynamic,” “energetic,” “creative” and “organized” to describe the Notre Dame graduate, who now lives in Washington, D.C.According to one Exonian,“she runs a volunteer planning meeting like no one’s business” and has a “knack for cutting to the chase while still seeing the big picture.” Three years ago, Meagen assumed the role of president of the Exeter Association of Washington, D.C., at the behest of History Instructor Rick Schubart, the Bates-Russell Distinguished Faculty Professor. “Our association president at the time was, unfortunately, moving from the area and Rick said,‘The Academy really needs you,’” Meagen recalls.Though her previous associations with Exeter post-graduation had been limited to attending social gatherings, she says,“As you know, it’s hard to say no to Rick Schubart.” Since assuming her role, the association has enjoyed an increase in attendance and in the number of annual gatherings. Meagen says she strives to provide a balance of social, educational and service-oriented activities that appeal to a wide range of ages and interests. This past year, for example, families attended a candlelight tour of Mt.Vernon, a New York Rangers vs.Washington Capitals game, a Pink Martini concert, a New York Mets vs.Washington Nationals game, and several planning meetings. In addition, association members look forward to the popular “Thirsty Third Thursdays” happy hours each month.“Thirsty Thursdays is a great, consistent event,” says Meagen.“We get together every month and we don’t ask anything of anybody. It doesn’t cost anything to attend and it’s a really effective tool for social networking.” When asked to reflect upon her role as an Exeter volunteer, Meagen says:“The reason I volunteer is because I believe in the Academy and I am grateful to give back to this place that has meant so much. But it is also because of my own personal philosophy, which is founded on non sibi and John Phillips’ belief that goodness without knowledge is weak and feeble, yet knowledge without goodness is dangerous. Volunteering, whether it be for Exeter or for my church, is a core part of who I am. I attribute that in large part to my experiences at Exeter.” I view a complete calendar of events, please visit http://phillips.exeter.edu. winter 2009 The Exeter Bulletin 57 The Young Alumni/ae Program Exeter’s Young Alumni/ae Program will host social events in coming months in cities across the country, including Boston, New York,Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, San Francisco and Los Angeles.
