LD 050852-04/15 4 Welcome to the Competition! Do you remember what you were doing 40 years ago in March of 1975? I remember being so excited to hear that Kalamazoo was to host a string competition in honor of Julius Stulberg. In the ensuing years, hundreds of young artists and prominent judges have traveled to Kalamazoo for this annual event. The level of talent has risen steadily, but the mission that Esther Stulberg and the founding members envisioned has remained the same: promote excellence in string instrument performance by gifted young artists under the age of twenty. There are so many to thank for this success: present and previous board members, our executive director and those that served before, our musical partners, our grant funders, our donors, our competition hosts, our esteemed judges and pianists, Western Michigan University and the School of Music, and the Stulberg family. With such support, it is not surprising that the Stulberg Competition is consistently ranked among the best competitions in the world. Thank you for sharing in our 40th anniversary celebration. The best is yet to come! Sincerely, Grace Field President of the Board 5 KALAMAZOOARTS.ORG Pro m o ting , S up p or t ing , and Fundi ng T h e A r ts and Ar tists in Kal amazoo 359 s. kalamazoo mall - suite 203 k a l a m a z o o , m i 4 9 0 0 7 269.342.5059 6 SCHEDULE Saturday, May 16, 2015 SEMIFINAL PERFORMANCES 9 am – noon & 1 – 4 pm On the Half Hour • Free & Open to the Public PRESENTATIONS 4:30 pm • Bach Award • Announcement of Finalists FINALS CONCERT 8 pm AWARDS CEREMONY 10 pm • Burdick-Thorne Gold Medal • Silver Medal • Pinehurst Bronze Medal The Stulberg Family invites you to meet the musicians at a reception in the lobby following the Awards Ceremony Sunday, May 17, 2015 Violin, Viola and Cello Master Classes 12:30-3:30 pm • Classes run concurrently on the half hour • Free & Open to the Public All events are held at the Dalton Center on the campus of Western Michigan University 7 We Proudly SuPPort the Stulberg InternatIonal StrIng coMPetItIon Bronson Advanced Radiology Services, a convenient destination for state-of-the-art outpatient testing and diagnostic services. 524 S. The family eventually settled in Marshall, Michigan. Julius received degrees from and taught at Michigan State University, where he also met his future wife, Esther Leiberman. The Stulberg bond with Kalamazoo was forged in 1943 when he accepted the post of conductor of the newly established Junior Symphony. In 1945, the Stulberg family moved to Kalamazoo when Julius joined the faculty of Western Michigan University. Throughout his life, his wife Esther was his support and helpmate. Following Julius’ death at the age of 61 in 1974, she was the driving force behind the establishment of the Competition, which memorializes his life’s passions. After Esther’s death in 2001, a dedicated Board of Directors, corps of volunteers and the Stulberg family assumed the mantle of responsibility for the competition. Today, the Stulberg is one of the longest-standing string competitions in the country and is unique among music competitions due to its focus on young string musicians, strong reputation, and high caliber of judges. Over the years, more than 2,500 musicians have participated in the Stulberg, and more than one hundred have been awarded a medal. Many have gone on to illustrious careers in the fields of music performance and education. Throughout its history, the Stulberg has attracted world-renowned musicians to Kalamazoo to serve as Competition judges and Master Class instructors. Through its Master Classes and Education Outreach, the Stulberg extends its impact by providing free learning opportunities for local musicians and audiences. 11 The Ray Financial Group of Wells Fargo Advisors is proud to support The Stulberg International String Competition Kent Ray Managing Director – Investments Greg Seiler, CFP® Financial Advisor Jeffrey Siefert, CFP® Financial Advisor 7900 Moorsbridge Rd.
