Is your home fire-safe?
Top Tips from Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue
so you can be sure!
How fire safe is your home?
Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue is offering a
free scheme that will pull up any hazards
and help ensure county residents are as safe
as possible.
The Service offers free Home Fire Safety
Checks, which involves a home visit, advice
on potential hazards, and the fitting of a
free smoke alarm, if required, simply
ring 01522 582222 and ask for the
Community Fire Safety department,
or email [email protected].
Statistics emphasise how important it is
to have a smoke alarm in the home; in
England, more than 200 people are killed
in accidental house fires each year – and
almost 40 per cent of these fatal fires
occurred in homes where no smoke alarm
was fitted.
In Lincolnshire, 20 per cent of accidental
house fires in 2011 occurred in a property
with no smoke alarm, resulting in 12
casualties.
Plus, 30 per cent occurred in houses with
smoke alarms that didn’t work, proving that
simply having one fitted isn’t enough.
To ensure that your smoke alarms always
work, Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue advises
testing them every week and looking after
them by following manufacturers’ instructions
– for example, by vacuuming the dust off
them at least every three months.
Even if you’ve already had a smoke alarm
fitted, it’s important to test it regularly.
Here is a list of simple checks
you should make:
• Close inside doors at night to
stop a fire from spreading
• Turn off and unplug electrical
appliances unless they are designed
to be left on (like your freezer)
• Check your cooker is turned off
• Don’t leave the washing machine on
• Turn heaters off and put up fireguards
• Put candles and cigarettes out properly
• Make sure exits are kept clear
• Keep door and window keys
where everyone can find them
It’s also important to remember that you’re
more at risk from fire when you’re asleep, so
it’s a good idea to check your home before
turning in.

in the home, visit Lincolnshire Fire
and Rescue’s website at

FOREWORD
from the Operations
Director
H
ello to all our
readers and
welcome to this
summer edition
of our magazine.
My name is Michele Seddon,
I am the Operations Director
here at Age UK Lincoln and I
have been asked to write this
editions foreword due to the
current absence of our CEO.
I was very happy to do so
too as it gives me an ideal
opportunity to share some
very exciting news with you all
about one of the most recent
developments that has taken
place here at Age UK Lincoln.
After months of planning
we have entered into a joint
venture with LACE Housing
Association to provide Day
Support Services at two of
their existing sites, Ruckland
Court, Ruckland Avenue,
Lincoln and Eccleshare Court,
Ashby Avenue, Lincoln.
Under the terms of this new
partnership arrangement
LACE Housing Association
will continue to own the sites
and to provide the residential
care home services at both
venues and Age UK Lincoln
will provide the Day Support
Services. LACE Housing
will also continue to provide
transport services and meals
at the Centres under this
partnership approach. The
existing staff and volunteers
have been brought across to
join Age UK Lincoln so those of
you who already attend either
site can be assured of seeing
some familiar faces along
with some new ones too as
we hope to enhance the team
with the invaluable support
of additional volunteers.
In addition to the current
service offered to customers
at the Day Centres we plan
to bring with us a range of
other services, activities
and opportunities to make
these sites engaging and
enjoyable places for older
people to spend their day.
Some of you may know of
or even be regular visitors
to our Park Street Activity
Centre in the middle of Lincoln
and we hope to recreate
some of the vibrancy and
atmosphere that our staff,
volunteers and customers
both create and enjoy there.
For further information
or to enquire about
attending either day centre

Are You at Risk of Developing Skin Cancer?
Summer is on the way and most of us want to be out in the sunshine topping up our tans but are we aware of
the hidden damage that the sun can cause to our skin?
You might not realise it but sunlight is a contributing factor in 90 per cent of skin cancer cases in the UK and
the number of cases is rising at an alarming rate, they have doubled in the last 20 years.
Non-malignant melanoma is the most common form of skin cancer and there are over 65,000 new cases
each year in the UK. If caught early this type of skin cancer is very treatable and unlikely to spread. The most
serious type of skin cancer is malignant melanoma which can spread to other parts of the body and causes
1800 deaths per year. Around 8,000 people a year in the UK are diagnosed with malignant melanoma of these
3,500 are men and 4500 are women
We are all at risk of sunburn when we expose our skin to sunlight. It might be a cloudy day but the UV light
can still get through and damage your skin. Sunburn is not immediately apparent and by the time the skin
starts to become painful and red, the damage to our skin has been done.
Make sure that you check your skin for signs of sun damage on a regular basis and ensure that you check
out any moles you have for signs of changes. If you notice
anything different about the size, colour or shape of a mole
please get it checked out by your GP as soon as possible.
We need sunlight to keep our levels of vitamin D topped
up but there are safe ways of ensuring that we get enough
sunlight.
Golden Rules to Stay Safe in the Sun
• Always choose a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or above with
4 stars or more on the label. Apply it thickly (use at least
2 tablespoons worth)and evenly to all exposed skin paying
particular attention to face, ears, neck, bald patches, hands
and feet.
• Re-apply sunscreen every 90 minutes and especially after
swimming, sweating and any contact that may rub the
cream off.
• Don’t rely on sunscreen alone – you should avoid the sun
between 11am and 3pm, seek shade and cover up with
tightly woven fabrics.

Carers Support Groups
A carer is someone who spends a proportion of their life providing unpaid
support to family members, a partner, a relative or friend.
C
arers Connect are supporting
over 2500 unpaid carers
and trying to identify those
who are hard to reach and
those who do not realise
we are here to support them.
Monthly Support Groups are an
important avenue for some and are
held across the county in locations
which are easily accessible for most.
These groups offer mutual support
and friendship from others in similar
situations, as well as social opportunities
and access to other services.
Come along to your local group, tea
and cakes on offer, meet other carers,
and see what support is available.
Alternatively, if you would like an
informal chat call the Carers Centre
on Lincoln 812830 or visit our website
at www.carersconnect.me

Businesses Urged to Donate to
New Age UK Lincoln Building
HOW c
an you
Age UK Lincoln has so far raised £700,000 to renovate and extend the Park Street Activity Centre in
Lincoln, but there are still essential items that are needed to help modernise the premises. That’s
why the charity is now asking local businesses to help out by donating items for the new building.
S
o far, funding
has been raised
through a grant of
£200,000 received
from the Bradbury
Foundation and the charity’s
own reserves. Further funding
will be secured from the
sale of Age UK Lincoln’s
Sixfield Close property.
Lindum Construction
began work on the centre on
Monday (3rd June) and has
been working closely with
the charity to ensure best
value for money and to help
secure donations of necessary
items where possible.
But there are still many
items needed to finish this
project that the charity can’t
currently afford, including
a new boiler, new toilets,
new electrics and more.
Age UK Lincoln is asking
businesses to donate any
items they can to the cause
in order for them to finish the
extensive development work
to a standard that will ensure
longevity of the building and
the comfort of the charity’s
1,800 weekly customers.
The centre offers a wide
range of services for older
people, including friendship
clubs, classes, a subsidised
restaurant and a hairdresser.
There is also an IT suite, a
café and an advice service.
The building work is
expected to be complete by
suppor ting older people for over 50 years
Christmas 2013. The centre will
continue to operate as normal
during the construction period.
“This project will breathe
a new lease of life into the
building, which is already
much loved and well used
by customers and staff alike.
However, there are still
certain things that we can’t
afford and we would like to
have in place by the time
work ceases in December,”
said Georgina Garrett,
Fundraising and Marketing
Manager at Age UK Lincoln.
“Part of this project plan is
to modernise the facilities, as
some of our current furnishings
are becoming very worn and
quite uncomfortable to use.
HELP?
We would be truly grateful if
local businesses could give
us a helping hand to make
this project a real success.”
Other ways to help this
project reach its full potential
are by sponsoring a brick of the
building, sponsoring a function
room or contributing to the
charity’s Mile of Pound Coins.

on how you can
help, or if you
would like to make
a donation, please

money allocated
to an individual in
order to meet their
assessed community care
needs. This means that those
who are eligible for community
care rather than having
services chosen for them can
select which providers are
best suited to their needs.
Councils can still commission
services for recipients or a
combination of both can be
opted for. The payments must
only be spent on the services
identified in the recipients
support plan however, the
various forms of this are:
Direct Payment
You are paid by the
council directly into your
account and can spend this
money on solutions and
services as you see fit.
Indirect Payment
This is when a direct payment
is deemed in the individual’s
best interests yet they are
unable to consent to the
payment. This will be paid
to a person the council
believes to be ‘suitable’.
Individual Service Funds
All or part of your personal
budget is kept by a service
provider (such as Age UK
Lincoln) and withdrawn when
you utilise a specific service.
Council Administration
The entirety of your
budget is kept by
the council and spent
on your behalf.
The national
government intended to
have 70% of social care
users receiving personal
budgets by April 2013 but
this has yet to be achieved.
Despite this we can expect
personal budgets to become
the norm in the foreseeable
future. This move has led
to criticism from some
quarters that whilst allowing
for budgetary freedom the
variety of choice is not
actually there. Here at Age
UK Lincoln we strive to
provide that choice for all of
our clients with a dedicated
service that respects their
individuality and desire to
remain within their own home.
Many users of personal
care now have some form of
personal budget. It remains
largely the case however
that older people have their
budget managed entirely
by the local authority. In the
cases where service users
are either entirely or partially
managing their own budget
research suggests that
personal budgets do improve
their overall experience of
care provision. Here at Age
UK Lincoln we are eager to
support any changes which
will increase the liberty of
our service users to stay
independent but we would
like to ensure that this is done
with the individual in mind and
not the best interests of local
government. We would also
hope to see an improvement in
the complexity of applying for
personal budgets, a situation
which currently remains
overly complicated especially
for service users with
added health complications
such as dementia.
How We Can Help
We have a rapidly growing
care department here at
Age UK Lincoln and we are
always looking for new clients.
Using our core values and
charity background as guiding
principles we hope to provide
a quality service that stands
out from the competition.
Working closely with our
Volunteer, Technical, and Help
in the Home departments
we look out for the continued
interests of our clients with a
focus on the local area and
the welfare of each and every
service user.

home and establish your
needs and requirements and
then allocate an experienced
Home Support Worker to you.
For an hourly fee, and for a
minimum of an hour a week our
Support Worker’s will help you
with tasks around your home.
This can range from laundry,
ironing and hoovering through to
shopping and pension collection.
“I get so much out of
my job knowing that I’ve
made someone’s day by
just being there for an hour
chatting, making a cup of tea
or hoovering. Just that I’ve
been there when I’m probably
the only person they see
each week makes it a very
satisfying job, “ Sarah, Senior
Home Support Worker.
Social isolation has a
huge impact on anybody’s
life and when doing everyday
tasks can become a struggle
to you our Home Help offer
a real lifeline in support.
Pam, who is one of our
long term service users’
benefits hugely from our visits:
“Sarah helps me keep my
independence, she hoovers
and mops for me because my
arthritis prevents me from doing
these jobs. I try and keep busy
when Sarah is here so it’s a real
team effort and we get on great.
“She is a real asset; nothing
is too much trouble for her.
I couldn’t be without her. It’s
this service that enables
me to stay at home.”

All of this will culminate in staff

they can access all of our
services in the one location. This re-development is very
exciting and will benefit
everyone involved. A notice

If in doubt, just say no
As part of the project Operation REPEAT (Reinforcing Elderly Persons Education At All Times), Lincolnshire Trading Standards, Lincolnshire
Police and Community Lincs are working together to keep you safe from rogue traders.
Lisa Foster, Principal Trading Standards Officer, comments: “With summer upon us, we know this is a time when doorstep sellers are out in force
across Lincolnshire offering services such as tiding up gardens and driveways, cleaning windows and guttering, putting up new fences and
laying patios.
“Common tactics used by these rogue traders have included professional-looking advertising, cold-calling and high-pressure selling. Other
warning signs include offering deals which seem too good to be true or only accepting cash for the work.”
Lincolnshire Trading Standard’s advice is to stick to a few golden rules:
· Keep your front and back doors locked and take the keys out at all times.
· Make sure you put the door chain on before opening the door.
· Don’t let visitors who are in a hurry, pressurise or confuse you leave them to wait outside while you confirm who they are.
· When you need to leave a caller standing outside, while you collect or check something indoors, always
remember to close the door and lock it.
· Never use a telephone number given to you by a caller –
find the number in your telephone directory or check with a friend, relative or neighbour.
· If you are not comfortable, ask the caller to return. Make sure someone is with you when they come back.
· If you do need some work doing, ask friends and family for recommendations and get at least three written
quotes to compare.
· If you do agree some work within your home, and its over £35, you are entitled to a 7 day cooling off period.
· Remember, keep in control and don’t feel pressured. If in doubt, just say “no”.
If you are approached by a door-to-door salesperson who you suspect may not
be genuine, if possible without compromising your safety, please record as much
information as possible regarding dates, times, vehicle details and business
details and report to Lincolnshire Trading Standards on 01522 782341 or at
[email protected]

55 years
On Friday 7th June we held a party at Park Street to
celebrate 55 years of Age UK Lincoln. The day proved to be
a huge success with over one hundred people attending.
W
ayne and Steve
(who run our
restaurant)
were very
busy cooking
a delicious meal, for starters
it was a choice of prawn
cocktail or roasted red pepper
soup, the main was roast
Lincolnshire beef with all the
trimmings, and pudding was
a chocolate tart made with
fresh cream, eggs, butter
and chocolate (all the things
that taste delicious but are
best in small portions!)
The Mayor the Right
Worshipful the Mayor of
Lincoln, Councillor Patrick
Vaughan and his Mayoress,
Ms Lorna Stow attended,
and looked splendid in their
Mayoral chains. We also
invited the vice-president
of Lindum Rotary Club Mr
Frank Swift and his wife
Jenny. The Lindum Rotary
Club had generously given a
donation to our information
and advice department.
Our Chair of Trustees, Pat
Parker introduced the event
and reassured everyone that
our centre would still run all
the courses it presently does
after the new build is finished.
2 0 | summer 2013
We had a raffle and
raised over £170 pounds,
entertainment was provided by
a duo called Abba Eyes who
were fantastic, everyone had a
dance and sing-a-long, there
was a really good atmosphere
and everyone said how
much they enjoyed the day!
The only thing that
went a bit awry was when
I knocked on Abba Eyes
changing room door to
borrow their microphone
so I could thank all the
volunteers and restaurant
staff, they took this as a cue
to start performing..........
out they leapt.........music
blaring......... guests startled
at the music........ and me
a bit dazed by it all........
Anyway this meant I forgot
to thank the restaurant staff
and volunteers who all did a
wonderful job............So here’s
a big, big Thank You from me!
Pictured [right] is Linda
Harper our volunteer
receptionist who looked
fab in her 1960’s clothes.

Lifelines
Age UK Lincoln operates its own dedicated Lifeline &
Keysafe service for people over the age of 50 who reside
within a 15 mile radius of Lincoln.
T
he Lifeline unit is
plugged into the main
working telephone
socket and a 13 amp
electric socket. Both
sockets should be on the
same wall in the same room
this will prevent trip hazards.
The unit has an internal back
up battery. This battery enables
the unit to function for up to 30
hours in the event of an electric
failure. The unit will not work
without a working telephone line.
The user’s telephone is
plugged into the unit and the
telephone will work normally.
Once all connections are
made the unit will be tested
and you will be shown how
it works. This takes normally
about 30 minutes.
If the user requires help
they can press the red button
on the pendant or the red
button on the unit. Once the
red button is pressed the
unit dials the control room in
Lincoln, the control room will
answer the call through the unit
and if assistance is required
they will notify the contacts
you have nominated so they
can respond accordingly.
If the control room
receives no response to an
activated pendant they will
ask one of your contacts to

respond. i.e. you may have
fallen away from the unit.
Costs:
Rental:
£40 per quarter this covers
rental and monitoring.
Purchase:

and the monitoring is
£25 per quarter.

set-up costs or
installation charges

services need to gain access
to your home should you
require help. You can also
give the code to carers etc to
elevate the need to issue keys
Costs:
Supply only:£50 (if
collected from the office)

Sitting comfortably
Worry-free bathing
Ageing can mean experiencing
more aches and pains.
However, the correct
chair can make all the
difference to our comfort.
We’ve combined Age UK’s
experience and Handicare’s
understanding of the
mobility market, along with
feedback from customers
and healthcare professionals,
to offer a range of tailormade riser-recliner chairs
that suit a variety of needs.
A soak in a warm bath or a
steaming hot shower can work
wonders in easing aches and
pains. But it’s not quite so
enjoyable when you’re worried
about slipping or how you’re
going to get out of the bath.
In association with
Handicare we offer a range of
options, from walk-in baths to
easy access showers. They’re
tailor made to match you and
your bathroom, and come in a
variety of finishes with a host
of options and accessories.
