No. 14 - Lehrman Community Day School
TheLehrmanLink A weekly publication of lehrman community day school containing time-sensitive information for members of the school community Vol 13 • Issue 14 Friday, January 6, 2012 • 11 Tevet 5772 • c"ga, Dear Parents, Dr. Lilia DiBello, Assistant Professor of Education at Barry University and Chair of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, is not a stranger to Lehrman. This Sunday, when she will lead a discussion on language and literacy at our “Hop, Skip and a Jump” event, will mark her fourth visit. She has led professional development and parent workshops; each time she has remarked on how impressed she is with our wonderful faculty. (It takes one to know one, by the way—I can vouch for her teaching ability as I was in three of her courses during my doctoral program at Barry.) An expert on early childhood education, she said of our kindergarten teachers, “If only I could clone them…” One of the reasons she agreed yet again to come to this “transition to elementary school” is that she values the importance of such events. The Harvard Family Research Project (2002), in a comprehensive review of research on positive transition practices for children going from early childhood to elementary schools, indicated that schools should be pro-active in creating transition experiences. Reaching out to families to create connections between the school and the family with events like our Hop, Skip and a Jump is exactly what the Harvard report is talking about. We will be talking about theoretical issues as well as the nitty gritty “the day in the life of a kindergartener” and beyond. Mrs. T and Miss Betsy will describe what life is like for kids in Kindergarten, so early childhood parents will be able to prepare themselves and their children for what is coming next. Then Miss Mimi will take the story to the next level. Morah Ayala will discuss our Hebrew and Jewish studies program. Second and third grade teachers will be here to answer questions about the beyond…! We at Lehrman are interested in building what Harvard terms continuous partnerships of participants throughout your children’s transitions, to help them achieve and be all they can be while at Lehrman Community Day School. We look forward to seeing you there on Sunday. Linda K. Schaffzin Director of Admissions If you have not done so, please respond so we can be properly prepared for your family.
