TheLehrmanLink A weekly publication of lehrman community day school containing time-sensitive information for members of the school community Vol 12 • Issue 10 W Friday, November 5, 2010 • 28 Heshvan 5771 • t"ga, hen President Kennedy invited artists, writers and intellectuals to the White House, he announced that there had not been such a distinguished assemblage of great intellect there since Thomas Jefferson dined alone. We Jews have great intellectual heroes like Jefferson. You may be familiar with Rashi (Rabbi Salomon Isaac, teacher and vintner) the great Bible interpreter, and Rambam (Rabbi Moses Maimonides, scholar and physician). A contemporary version of these men is 73-year-old Adin Steinsaltz, whose prolific scholarship, quiet modesty, twinkling eyes and magnetic smile have earned him world-wide following; Time Magazine termed him ‘a once-in-a millennium scholar.’ From a non-religious family, Steinsaltz studied physics and chemistry at Hebrew University, and at 24 became Israel’s youngest school principal. Eventually he began a five decade study and translation of the 45 volumes of the Talmud to make the foundational text more accessible to all Jewish people. The Global Day of Jewish Learning is the celebration of the completion of that goal. Jews worldwide will celebrate with a variety of events on Sunday November 7th. The scope of events is apparent on the Global Day website: www.1people1day. org. On Sunday, Jews will study texts in cities, kibbutzim, schools, synagogues and homes all over the world simultaneously. These historical texts bind us all to a past and to each other, and because we are educating our children now, to a future as a people. Lehrman joins Temple Menorah and Rabbi Pearlson, who will teach the adults at 11:00 am. Elementary age students will have a fun-filled interactive activity in Olemberg Hall. At 12:30pm our little ones will ‘study’ at a PJ Library story-time at Books & Books in the Bal Harbour Shoppes. The book is a beautiful story about the mitzvah of tzedakah—giving and goodness. Can one man affect eternity? Jefferson certainly did, as did Rashi and Rambam. Steinsaltz is a role model for our children. A man who began his life as a scientist and an educator, who on Sunday will unite Jews of all ideologies, national origins and native languages for one purpose. For one day, one hour, we will be Am Ehad, Lev Ehad—one people, one heart. We hope to see you there as well. Linda K.
