p ridoy, November 17, 1972 NEW UNIVERSITY HOT TUNA & CO. Page 9 i^f^^SSS, ~ by ralph hawkins staff writer It is rare when one has a chance to go to a concert and see more than one really good group. Most of theaudience (myself included) scarfs up $5 plus just to see the main attraction. Naturally Iwas surprised to get a chance to see Hot Tuna, the New Riders and Wishbone Ash all at one shot. Although the Hollywood Palladium is not the best place to SEE a group, it consistently manages to come up with fine shows. Wishbone Ash was up first and got the crowd moving with a little rock-for-your-roll and a little hootchie-for-your-koo.Their music is too for some, but their style is unique. Their ts were fairly long, and the twin leads went rough so many changes Idon't know how ey kept going. They only played for an hourid-a-half (encore includedlt and after a brief Lermission it was time for the New Riders of the Purple Sage, an offshoot of the Grateful Eavy EVho was it that said theSan Francisco sound as Dead? The New iders started out with a few country nuni>rs, evolving into some really, really fine >ogie and ending, of course, with a few old ick-and-rollers for good measure. Their nind is pretty smooth and most of their sets developedinto long jams featuring the best of bass, rhythm, lead and especially pedal eel guitar. An added extra female vocalist id some harp rounded out the sound really ce. Even after another 90 minutes of muc. no one was tired of NRPS. (Rumor has it at the Dead will be back Dec. 20th.) ifter seeing all this. Ididn't know what to (e expect from Hot Tuna.
