European Union Municipality of Arilje GUIDE THROUGH ARILJE Užice - 37 km Čačak - 50 km Kragujevac - 96,5 km Požega - 14 km Ivanjica - 28 km Beograd -195 km Čajetina - 76,5 km Sirogojno - 40 km (preko Radoševa) Zlatibor - 62 km Mokra Gora - 83 km 2 ARILJE ARILJE I am Arilje, a small town in western Serbia. I cover an area of 349 km2 at an altitude of 330-1382 m. The geographical coordinates are 43 45' 07" - 20 05' 26" I am located among the river basins of Moravica, Veliki and Mali Rzav. Always on the right road. Close to large urban areas and attractive destinations. ARILJE 3 My best known structure is the church of St. Ahilije from the 13th century which bears testimony that I am a town with a long history. I am old but young at heart and full of life, especially in the summer period when thousands of people liven up the beaches of my river Rzav. I have 20,000 hard working entrepreneur citizens. We are renowned for growing raspberries so I am called the Red Gold Capital. Almost every household in Arilje grows raspberries. The 5,000 “small factories under open sky” produce over 20 million kilograms of raspberry annually. Our raspberries are not only delicious, but have healing characteristics as well. They contain plenty antioxidants, and according to doctors, a daily portion of 130 grams of raspberry considerably reduces cancer risks. My name is associated with the best quality textile. If you ask where our cotton plantations are located, we will say there aren't any but there are numerous small and large workshops with products bearing the brand „The Arilje textile”. DID YOU KNOW? Many popular people wore the Arilje products. You could see the Evolution brand attire in the Flamingos spot, Extreme Intimo underwear on Nataša Bekvalac and Danilo Ikodinović, Novak Djoković wearing the garments made by Miteks, Garman creations on singer Tijana Dapčević and the host Milan Kalinić wearing Exterra. 4 ARILJE HISTORICAL MONUMENTS St. Ahilije ARILJE 5 ST. AHILIJE CHURCH DON'T MISS: 6 May 28, the church patron saint feast day (Ariljevdan), one of the favorite town events, gathering spiritual and political leaders and people in the churchyard. ARILJE There are seven churches on the territory of Arilje and three of them are over 7 centuries old. My spiritual lighthouse is the church of St. Ahilije, founded by king Dragutin in the 13th century. It was constructed in the Raška style. It is said that a Byzantine temple once occupied this space when Saint Sava won independence for our church, with one of the 12 episcopates located at a plateau above the confluence of the Rzav into the Moravica. At that time, my name was Moravice. Later, in honor of St. Achillius, the bishop from Larissa, whose relics had been brought here by the people of Thessaly, my name changed into Arilje. The main street and secondary school are named St. Ahilije as well. The church of St. Ahilije has been designated as a monument of exceptional value. FRESCOS The church was fresco painted in 1296 and this decoration occupies the attention of many people. If you wish to find out more about our church ant its fresco painting, please read the short novel “Ahilije” and the novel “Brajan”, by the well known Serbian writer Dobrilo Nenadić, also from Arilje. ARILJE 7 8 ARILJE St. Ahilije Church “Who did not see thee, he does not know himself, Who has not seen thee, he shall not Arrive anywhere, For endless is the road …” ( The Angel of Arilje by Branko Miljkovic) Freska Sv. Arhangela Gavrila Plavi anđeo ARILJE 9 Frescos you must see: The Blue Angel, a fresco depicting St. Archangel Gabriel. It has been named as one of the masterpieces of Serbian fresco painting, ranking with the White Angel from the monastery Mileševa. The Miraculous fresco of Jesus Christ, which was awarded as the most beautiful for its visual identity at the exhibition in Paris in 1970. The Founder's composition, with a unique solution depicting the Son of God, Jesus Christ, reduced in size, in a medallion among the heads of the ruling Nemanjić brothers. 10 ARILJE Frescos of the whole Nemanjić dynasty, important because this is the first Nemanjić dynasty church depicting all the Nemanjić rulers up to King Dragutin. THE KLISURA MONASTERY The Klisura (gorge) Monastery is located 13 km from Arilje. It was built in the 13th century modeled as the St. Ahilije church, in the Raška style. According to legend, one good man, a companion of St. Sava was in charge of building it, so its original name was Dobrače (good man) just like the village it is built in. It was demolished and burned several times. The Turks burned it in 1688. It was reconstructed, but not for long. The Austrians demolished it in 1915 as retribution against the priest Veljko Tankosić, the parishioner of this monastery, who was the organizer of the uprising against the occupier. Today, the Klisura Monastery is a women's monastery. Interesting facts: The monastery was named after the geographical locality, which is the gorge of the river Moravica. Events: July 26, Saint Archangel Gabriel's Day, the church patron saint feast day (slava). ARILJE 11 ST. NIKOLA CHURCH One of the three churches from the 13th century surrounded by both nature and songs is the St. Nikola church in the village of Brekovo. It gathers those who cherish folk tradition through forgotten customs, songs and dances. Events: July 12 and August 28-popular gathering in the churchyard. 12 ARILJE Attractions: A monument was erected in the churchyard dedicated to Aleksandar I Karađorđević, the strategist in the wars for liberation (1912-1918). HOLY TRINITY CHURCH IN BJELUŠA According to popular belief, the church in Bjeluša was founded by serdar Jovan Mićić, in 1818 -1820 at the location of a small log church. THE CHURCH ON THE GRADINA At an altitude of 670 meters, among the clouds, is a church dedicated to St. Elijah, and is known as the hajduk church. The construction date of this church is unknown. According to experts it was erected on the ruins of a Roman sentry tower but the people believe in legends. Legends: The popular belief is that the church flew from the village Prilike when the Turks attempted to desecrate it, while according to another legend, the Serbs transferred it, with the help of God, to the top of the Gradina. DID YOU KNOW? Service isheld here twice a year, forSt. Elijah's day and the Beheading of St. John the Baptist. The church may be reached along a steeprockypath1,5kmlong. Adviceforwishestocometrue. According to popular belief, a person attending service, who is without sins, may freely walk around the church without falling down the ravine. If anyone decides to do so, the feat should be repeated three times. If the sinful person succeeds in encircling the church, it should be interpreted that all thesinshavebeenabsolved. ARILJE 13 CIRCLE OF CULTURE There are 6 centers of culture at the town square in a diameter of only 30 meters. 1) St. Ahilije Church, founded by king Dragutin Nemanjić dating from the 13th century; 2)The Old School from 1834, presently theTown Gallery; 3) Town Library, founded in 1895 with over 30.000 books; 4) Raspberry monument, work of art by sculptor Velimir Karavelić; 5) House (Konak) built in 1823, belonging to the commander (serdar) of the Užice district (nahiya), Jovan Mićić; 6) Town Hall (Sokolski dom) with the Town Cinema and Youth Center 1 6 5 Serdar Jovan Mićić DID YOU built his house here KNOW? because he chose Arilje as hiswinterresidence. According to legend, the Tarabić prophet family boldly predicted this eminent political figure that he would die of hunger in prison after changes in government and the return of the Karađorđević dynasty. The tomb of Jovan Mićić is in the churchyard of St. 14 Ahilije. ARILJE 2 3 4 ARILJE 15 16 ARILJE PRIRODNE LEPOTE ARILJE 17 THE VISOCKA SPA (VISOČKA BANJA) You will be breath taken by the Visoka Spa while bathing at an altitude of 600 m in water with a temperature of 27ºC. All you will see is part of the sky surrounded by rocks and hear the murmur of the lively river Rzav running right next to you for its own sake. The Visoka Spa is connected with a new 40 km asphalt road with Arilje. The bottoms of the two pools are covered by tiny sand with healthy bubbles constantly emerging (the water is enriched with potassium, magnesium etc.) The spa treats rheumatism, heart conditions, nervous diseases and substantially improves the eyesight. 18 ARILJE WHY IS IT UNIQUE? Interesting: There is an interesting guest book on the spa rocks. Those who were treated in the spa inscribed their names as a sign of gratitude so the miracle of this water would never be forgotten. This spa is not like other ones because its water may be consumed due to its scent and taste free characteristics. Unlike the urbanized spas, this is an oasis in the open. In its natural clothing, surrounded by a world of vegetation and animals, breathing with balance and harmony. ARILJE 19 VISOCKA SPA - ADVICE Do not stay in the water over 20 minutes The water is most beneficial if you remain still in it After leaving the pool, dress warm right away Do not indulge to the charms of the Rzav whose water is much colder than the one from the spa LEGEND A local peasant had a sick foal. He didn't have the heart to kill it, so he took it further away from the houses to the barely passable Rzav canyon to let it die there. After a few days the foal returned to the farmer healthy. Ever since that time, people have known about the beneficial qualities of this spring water, they have been living longer and bearing their old age easier by using thewaterfromthissource. NEARBY... Hunting - 2,5 km from the spa is the hunting lodge of the hunting club “Branko Đonović”, with 16 beds. You can spend the night here during the whole hunting season which starts on October 16 and lasts until March. The hunting game consists of deer, rabbits, wild boar and pheasants. 20 ARILJE THE GOLUBINJAK SCENIC VIEW There are remnants of an old fortress above the Visoka Spa and the Rzav, on a rock called the Golubinjak. It is believed that Jerina had built this fortification but it is undetermined whether these are medieval remains or date from the Roman times. The view stretches far from this point and you can enjoy the beautiful landscape and the Rzav river canyon. THE ZIJAČA CAVE It is located in the village Bjeluša 5 km from the Visoka Spa. A strong spring sources from the cave powering the watermills along the water course. The water is clear and good for drinking. The cave is still unexplored and is a real attraction for curious tourists. CAREVO POLJE (THE EMPEROR'S FIELD) The plateau Carevo polje is located on the hillsides of Okruglica in Bjeluša. Part of the plateau is occupied by a pile of rocks the locals call Careva gomila (the Emperor's Pile). According to legend, some emperor's army camped here and buried certain remains under the pile of rocks. Some believe it was the army of Miroslav, brother of Stefan Nemanja, who gathered the rocks to build the monastery Žuljan. According to another story, Carevo polje was the assembly point of Lazar's army, on their way to Kosovo. ARILJE 21 22 ARILJE VODENA PEĆINA (THE WATER CAVE) ARILJE 23 A great challenge awaits adventurers 20 km from Arilje in the Panjica canyon, on the border between the villages Brekovo and Dobrače. At present, it is only assumed that the water mass sourcing from the cave is actually a sinking river comprising of several sinking springs from the Kukutnica and Okruglica zone. The attractive entrance provides opportunities for speleologists, divers and brave ones to examine the secrets of this natural phenomenon just like the local curios young men who unveiled the secret that there is a small lake in the cave depths, fenced by rocks with a view at the sky. If you are treasure hunters, make your way to the rock with the Hajduk Cave, where people believe, the outcasts' treasure is hidden. Old civilization treasure hunters will be pleased with the remains of the old, unexplored fortification. Did you know that Josif Pančić discovered the endemic species campanula secundiflora in the canyon of the Panjica river? 24 ARILJE DID YOU KNOW? How to reach it? By taking the 800 m long rocky path, over small wooden bridges, you not only reach the Water C a ve , b u t e x p e r i e n c e t h e surrounding irresistible nature, high cliffs, numerous cascades and waterfallsofthePanjicariver. ARILJE 25 THE RIVER RZAV The Rzav, which is the pearl of this area, sets off easily from Mučanj not knowing that it will gain great force after joining the Jamička and Presečka rivers, boldly rushing through the passes and ravines, proudly flowing through the hills and meadows. It grows even more after joining the rivers Bjela Rijeka and Ljubišnica and enters the canyon visited only by brook trout fishermen. It provides the village of Visoka with several warm and healthy springs. Then the river Katušnica, with its waterfall in Gostilje, joins our pearl. The Mali (Little) Rzav impatiently awaits its namesake to rush down to the Urjak bridge to cool it down and clearly flow through all the Arilje beaches finally infusing into the Moravica. For fishermen, Rzav is associated with brook and California trout, and grayling. For the neighboring towns, Rzav is drinking water because Arilje generously supplies five neighboring towns with drinking water. For the most brave ones, Rzav provides rafting, starting from the village Kruščica and the Orlovača canyon. For the people of Arilje, Rzav represents our Spa center with all its beautiful whirlpools and beaches, it is our healer, symbol of life and growing place for all generations. Don't be surprised if you see a girl drinking the Rzav water from her hand, an old man scooping it with a glass or mother washing her baby's face with it. We believe in the Rzav and its effectiveness. 26 ARILJE ARILJE 27 RELAX... 28 ARILJE RELAX BEACHES ON THE RZAV In summer, the tourists' attention is mostly attracted b y t h e n u m e ro u s R z a v beaches.
