Dear Parents/Guardians, Staff, Community Members, and Students,
A very Happy 2015 to everyone!
The start of a New Year brings feelings of renewal or refreshment and
many of us actually set New Year’s resolutions. This is the perfect time
to encourage our students to set resolutions that directly impact their
schoolwork. Goal setting is an important life skill that helps students do
more, learn more, and go further. Report cards will be coming out on
January 22nd. Please take some time to discuss your child’s grades with
them and work with them to set goals. Contact your child’s teachers or
counselors if you want more information
on what kinds of goals would
be appropriate for them to aim for. Also, please call if you feel they are
off track and want to discuss ways to get them back on track.

WCMS is having a Family Night on Tuesday, January 20th sponsored by
Achieve 3000/TeenBiz. Guest speaker Barrett Graf will show parents
how to use the TeenBiz website at home. Please join us in the Library
Computer Lab to get online and see
how TeenBiz works. There will be
a light dinner starting at 5:30 p.m. followed by getting on the
computers at 6:00 pm. By reading articles at home, your child can
increase their lexile levels and be prepared
for a successful future. The
ability to read and comprehend informational
text is critical for all jobs
throughout Hawaii,
the United States and the world.
This month 6th and 7th graders will be asked to choose electives for next
school year. If your child is in the 6th grade, be on the lookout for
th
green registration
materials. If your child is in the 7 grade, expect to
receive blue registration
materials. Please look through the elective
offerings with your
child and select electives that will help them explore
their interests and
develop their talents. If you have any questions,
please contact our

Changes in state testing that you need to know about Hawaii is committed to ensuring all students are prepared to succeed in college, the workplace and our
community.
That’s why all public schools across the state are implementing the Hawaii Common Core – a set
of consistent expectations for what students should know and be able to do at each grade. New tests aligned
with the Hawaii Common Core will measure how well students are learning real world skills such as critical
thinking and problem solving.
These new tests are developed by the multi-state Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium, of which Hawaii
is a governing member. Teachers, parents and higher education faculty from Hawaii collaborated to create
high-quality Smarter Balanced tests to accurately measure student progress toward college- and careerreadiness.
Similar to the Hawaii State Assessment (HSA), the new Smarter Balanced tests are adaptive and administered
online. This format allows the test to adjust to each student’s ability, providing parents and teachers with more
meaningful information about what students are learning.
The Hawaii State Department of Education is working to ensure teachers and students are prepared to
transition to the Smarter Balanced tests. Dozens of schools participated in a tryout of the new test between
March and June of 2014, ahead of statewide implementation in the 2014-2015 school year.
Waimea Canyon Middle School students will be taking the tests in May of 2015.
Take the Test! Parents and students can experience what the Smarter Balanced tests
are like by taking practice questions, available for grades 3 through 8 and high school.

and real students’ advice!)
Dear Wise Minihunes,
I have two really good friends who really
dislike each other. Friend One is jealous of Friend
Two and doesn’t treat Friend Two very well.
People like Friend Two more, she gets more
attention and she kind of steals the thunder from
Friend One but she’s not doing it on purpose.
Friend Two hates how Friend One acts around her.
I want them to be friends, I honestly think they
would get along well if they put this aside. How do I
help them?
From, A student with jealous friends
Dear Student with jealous friends,
It is a difficult thing to go through when you
have two good friends who are fighting. People are
going to be jealous of other people, it’s reality. I’m
pretty sure that Friend #1 isn’t purposely making
Friend #2 jealous. In my opinion Friend #2 should
accept that there are people who are going to
better at some things than her and she shouldn’t
treat them badly because it is not intentional. You
could try talking it out with them and just mention
that a silly problem like this shouldn’t break
friendships apart.
From, a wise minihune (Kaira Kelekoma)
Dear Student with jealous friends,
I really know how you feel. One of my
greatest friends and I deal with the same thing.
Kaelin More of: Trying to be a better person Less of: Being selfish Cameron More of: Make sure I do my homework Less of: Not talk as much as I do now She has a friend who doesn’t really like
me. We always have to hang out with each other
at different times so we don’t fight. I think the friend
who is jealous of the other shouldn’t be jealous
because she’s popular. Popularity is just a rating
people have based on their own opinion. She
should be happy that she has you as a friend.
Friends are the main things in life. If she doesn’t
appreciate having friends, then it’s her problem, not
yours.
From, a wise minihune (Morgan Joy Igaya)
Dear Student with jealous friends,
I think it would be best if maybe you can
give your friend with less attention more attention
than you give the other. That could give the friend
with less attention the chance to feel your
friendship more, she could feel more happy and
proud of what she has. The friend with lots of
attention already has enough attention from others.
From, a wise minihune (Azea Minia)
Dear Student with jealous friends,
I think that you and your jealous friends
should all get along. I mean, why does it matter if
someone is better than you at some things or has
nicer things than you? It doesn’t matter at all. All
that matters is that you be happy with who you are.
From, a wise minihune (Kahelelani
Kaohelaulii)

December 11 Band Concert Review
by Amber Drake, Concert Band I – trombone player
The spotlight shone down on the musicians,
the audience was quiet, the conductor raised his
baton and then the music started. The WCMS
band started off with simple warm-ups then went on
to play a variety of songs including “The
Nutcracker,” “Hallelujah Chorus,” “Holiday Array,”
“Three Christmas Bells,“ and others. The audience
heard music from the Concert Band I, Concert
Band II, the Symphonic Band, and the Waimea
Vibes group. All of the groups are taught by Mr.
David Braun.
The instruments in Concert Band 1
included the trombone, saxophone, trumpet,
clarinet, flute, bass drum, snare drum, and bells.
Concert Band 1 played first and ended with solos
from the trumpet, snare drum, saxophone, and
clarinet. Their performance is highly recommended
for people enjoy music and who don’t mind loud
noises and duets from different instruments.
Waimea Vibes singers perform “Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride” from Lilo and Stitch. In my opinion, if you like mysteries, you’ll
love the play, “Three Doors to Death.” It is an
amazing KPAC play starring our very own
classmates. There was a very interesting outcome
as to who the murderer was because it was cleverly
set up so no one knew who really committed the
murder and the audience could decide who it was.
The costumes were amazing because they
matched each character or personality perfectly. It
was cool how the audience could choose what the
next action would be. Overall, this was an amazing
murder mystery acted out by Lily Alt, Kris Ragudo,
Julieene Gawearan, Sarah Santos, Sara Funtanilla,
Morgan Joy Igaya, Ariell Siliado, Cameron Hanson,
and Joseph Hedstrom.

I recently saw a play called “Three Doors to
Death.” I thought that the play was really put
together very well. I liked the idea of an interactive
play and that the play was directed by a high school
senior (Sera Shimomura). The students who acted
were really good as well. They looked like they did
the play a million times and were highly trained
actors. The plot was amazing, it was like a
Sherlock Holmes book. The only thing I thought
was bad was the sound. Everything else was
escellent…the costumes, the props, the setting, the
plot, everything!
by Tyde Takemoto
The WCMS production of “Three Doors to
Death” was clearly the fan favorite of the three
plays we watched. To me, this means our drama
program is something to be proud of, and
especially because a high school student directed
it. This might mean Kauai has a very bright future
in acting. The play was extremely good with a
complex plot. The audience played a key role in
this murder mystery as they actually decide who
the murderer is. I really, really enjoyed the play
and hope to see what we do next year! Go WCMS!
by Marcus Schultz
This year’s KPAC play done by WCMS was
so much fun! I actually got to perform in the play.
I’m Sara Funtanilla and I played Jeanette Marsh,
the “exceptionally talented director. I loved the play
this year. I recommend it to anyone who loves
hanging on to the edge of their seats.
It’s a story about a local detective trying to
find out who killed one of the actors in a community
play. The detective pauses to involve the audience
in the next actions for the play. I absolutely loved
Phyllis’s (Sarah) costume, it was big and bold and
my favorite outfit in the play.
The microphones got in the way of the
acting although everyone did their best and it really
showed, not just because I was in the play but
because I had such a fun time working with
everyone and our director, Sera Shimomura. Yes,
there were really three ‘Sarahs’ in this play…Sarah
Santos, Sera Shimomura, and myself, Sara
Funtaniila. I will miss everyone after the production
ends, it’s been a very fun and exciting ride!

Even though school lunches aren’t generally
like what you make at home, there are some good
ones like my favorite, chicken pasta. This pasta
dish is visually appealing and it tastes good too. I
recommend this lunch to anyone who loves pasta,
chicken, broccoli, or cheese. When all of these
things are combined just right, you would be very
surprised with its great taste! by Krystal Papa
Hi. My name is Nevaeh Planas and I eat the
school lunch almost everyday. In my opinion the
best lunches are the chicken strips and the
spaghetti with bread. I eat the other lunches but
I’m always in line when they serve these two
lunches. A lot of students complain about the food
looking like _____! I really do not feel that way, I
really do not have a problem with that. If the
students want their plates to look all fancy then they
can make their own lunches. They are lucky to be
eating, there are some kids in the world who don’t
get lunch or even get to eat. Anyway, I like those
two lunches the most, they taste great to me.
by Nevaeh Planas
You would be lucky to get into the cafeteria
on ‘Kalua Pig Day’ at school. The line shoots out
the door on both sides and the tables are packed
with students, making it hard to find a seat if you go
late. What makes this lunch so popular? Well, it
could be how the tender pork mingles with the juicy
tomatoes or how a bit of everything reminds you of
home in the islands. Whenever I stuff a bite of
pork, rice, spinach and lomi tomato in my mouth, it
feels like I’m vacation with my family on the beach.
Personally, I think the lomi tomatoes are the best
food in the lunch and wish they would let us scoop
our own more often. They burst in your mouth and
add flavor to all the other sides! Kalua Pig lunch is
#1!
