WAIM EA ELEM EN T ARY 67-1225 Mamalahoa Hwy., Kamuela, HI 96743 Ph: 887-7636/Fax: 887-7640 FEBRUARY 2012 P r i n c i p a l ’ s B o o k o f t h e M o n t h Wilfrid Gordon MacDonald Partridge lives next to an old folks' home, and he knows and loves each person there. That is why he is dismayed upon learning that his "favourite person of all" (note the Australian spelling of favorite) has lost her memory. Wilfrid wonders what a memory is, and begins asking each of the residents of the home. One answers, "Something warm, my child, something warm," while another answers, "Something from long ago, me lad, something from long ago," and so on. Intent upon giving Miss Nancy her memory back, Wilfrid collects items which he feels match the description of memory shared by his friends. (Something warm, for example, is a freshly laid egg). When he shares his collection of gathered treasures with Miss Nancy, she remarks, "What a dear, strange child to bring me all these wonderful things." Then she starts to remember. Each object retrieves from her memory a long forgotten pleasure, such as days at the beach, eggs found in nests, and a farewell to a brother off to war, whom she never 2011-12 saw again. And the final object helps her to recall the day she had first met this sweet little boy, and all the secrets they had shared. PARENT COFFEE HOUR DATES: March 7, 2012 We are all given the special gift of relationship and reaching out, April 4, 2012 and in turn have the wisdom, strength, love, creativity, and desire to reach out to one another. When it comes to laughing, Frank Delima knows what he’s doing. But did you know that Frank Delima is an educated man whose professional background includes both Bachelors and Masters Degrees? Furthermore, he believes that each one of our students are capable of the same level of success in life. On Wednesday, January 25th, our student body welcomed the popular entertainer, who shared messages of hope for a successful future through studying hard and reading and good health through proper diet, rest, exercise and laughter. He also conveyed an important message on anti-bullying, suggesting to be nice to one another and tease only “with permission” (to prevent permanent scars), and demonstrated the 3’Rs: Recognizing, Retreating from and Reporting of unexploded ordinances (UXO). Of course, no Frank Delima performance would be complete without his rendition of “Beef Stew and Rice,” a song inspired by the Zippy’s menu, sung to the tune of “A Fifth of Beethoven.” Waimea Elementary and Middle schools would like to thank our generous sponsors, the US Army Corp of Engineers and Wil Chee Planning, whose support made the laughter and cheering possible, and gave a students a great start to their day. Their mission to educate the entire community about the 3Rs and UXO safety on the Big Island continues to aid in keeping our school a safer place for our students. Parents are welcome to visit the display boards in the Cafeteria for the next two weeks to see some examples of UXO, as well as an interesting map which marks the areas which are being targeted for removal of UXO. The US Army Corps of Engineers also generously donated of our student planners which each student received at the beginning of the year and we appreciate and value our partnership with them. MAHALO!!
