Storytelling. The word conjures up different images for
each of us: scouts seated around a campfire, a young child
perched upon his grandfather’s lap, a dedicated teacher
illustrating a lesson with a story of her own creation. Stories
are an essential part of life. They have the power to teach, to
inform, to challenge and, of course, to entertain.
Kim
Weitkamp
There is no place where storytelling has been more a part of
the fabric of life than here in southern Ohio. The Shawnee
and Mingo tribes who inhabited these hills maintained their
history through stories passed from generation to generation.
The pioneers who established our communities brought
the stories of their ancestors even as they created their
own. The travelers, and those who helped them, along the
Underground Railroad encouraged one another with their
special stories of hope as they passed through this area of the
country.

Andy Offutt Irwin
A native of Covington, GA, Andy started out in
comedy, but added music and storytelling because
he had a lot more to say. He tours a lot, but when
he’s home he gets to be the Artist-In-Residence
at Oxford College of Emory University where he
directs plays from time to time. He spent five years
writing, directing and performing with the comedy improv troupe,
SAK Theatre at Walt Disney World. He is the host, storyteller, and
audience trainer for the radio show, Evening Star, on Georgia Public
Broadcasting.
Alton Chung
Mix together the magic and superstitions of the
Hawaiian Islands with the history of Japan and Korea
and you get finely spun stories from a man rooted in
a very unique culture and a one of a kind perspective.
All of this is combined and delivered with a deep
sense of reverence and authenticity. Not only does
he breathe life into traditional Asian folktales with
sensitivity and deep connection, but he can also touch into the fire of
ancient Hawaiian legends and tell them with passion and respect.
Stephen Hollen
Stephen Hollen grew up in the hills of Eastern
Kentucky where he honed his southern humor and
learned the fine art of storytelling as he sat on the
front porch and listened to folks tell tall tales, Jack
tales and just plain gossip about the neighbors. Along
the way he earned a Communications Degree in Oral
Interpretation… he had to explain that his Daddy’s
hard earned money taught him to “tell stories and talk
in front of folks”.
Kim Weitkamp
As the redheaded
child of exhausted parents, Kim grew up enjoying
the role of the middle child. Allowed to roam free
in the heart of Amish Country, her imagination was
ripened by a life lived outdoors. Now she enjoys the
role of being one of the most sought after storytellers
and speakers in the country. One reviewer stated, “Kim is a master at
seamlessly building bridges from story, to song, to story. Like all good
storytellers she evokes both laughter and tears, but her smooth silky
voice, impeccable timing, and dead-on anticipation of her listeners’
needs place her at the pinnacle of her craft.” In her work as a humorist,
storyteller, singer and songwriter, she has taken home a full armload of
awards and recognitions.
Ilene Evans
Ms. Evans resides in West Virginia. She is co-founder
of Voices from the Earth, a non-profit arts organization
and has served as the President of the West Virginia
Storytelling Guild. She has also been the featured
vocalist and storyteller for Peter and the Wolf with the
Wheeling Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Evans’ original
work, Climbing up the Beanstalk, was adapted for stage by director
Thomas Reese and performed at the Cincinnati State Community
College.
Frank McGarvey
Frank was born and raised in the “South End” of
Columbus, Ohio. They now call that area “German
Village.” Back then, it was just the south end. He
survived Aquinas High School, then went on to St.
Charles Seminary. He would not have made a good
priest, but he became a father five times over, having five wonderful
daughters in a house with only one bathroom. Of course that is a story
in itself.

Bill McKell
Bill began creating and
telling stories in high school. As a scout leader for
almost 20 years, he perfected his stories around the
campfire and at larger scout gatherings and other
events. A resident of Chillicothe, Ohio, Bill now
shares his stories at church, school and business
events throughout the Midwest. Inspired by
personal experiences and special people in his life,
Bill’s stories are filled with authentic characters, traditional values,
heartwarming messages, and surprise endings. Although crafted
originally for young people, Bill’s stories have universal appeal.
The Southern Ohio Storytelling Festival is funded
in part by grants from the Fund for Chillicothe of the Community Foundation and the David Meade Massie Trust.
