Tour de Trigs Update!
All three of us (Paul Cooper, Maria Kibbelwhite and myself) have arrived home safely, humor and
friendships intact, but having picked up a few aches and pains on route. Thankfully we seem to
have avoid the dreaded BLISTERS!!!
The route this year was 51 miles/39 checkpoints and more dark hours than daylight ones. We
found them all, including the two unmarked surprise ones, but missed the 24 hour cut off by about
20 mins, due, in part to a communications error between us and another team, leading us to
believe we’d missed the final checkpoint. ARGH!
The official results aren’t available yet (I’ll post again when they are) but I believe our team ‘2 Birds
and an Old Bloke’ finished 6th out of the 22 teams that undertook the full 50 miler. No mean feat
considering we were classed as a Novice team and competing against Tour regulars. There were
60 teams all together and distances ranging from 15 miles upwards.
This truly is a BRUTAL challenge, the toughest thing I have done to date by far.
Mentally you are constantly ‘on it’ with the map/co-ordinates. Massive thanks to Paul for some
very inspired and accurate compass work in tricky places. Physically it was an undulating route
with the largest hills saved for the second half. Even more cruelly there was an incredibly taxing
and nightmare to navigate last 5 miles. It made the 7 sisters at the end of Beachy appear quite
lame. Apologies to Paul and Hobbit as at this point I appeared to develop Tourettes Syndrome!
It soon became apparent that running the route wasn’t really an option. There was mud, mud and
more mud. Currently, I never want to run through a ploughed field again! There was also a very
strong wind, rain (luckily not too much) plenty of stiles, brambles, cows, sheep, horses, railway
and motorway crossings and even wading a ford, thank goodness for (sexy) seal skinz socks!
Lessons Learnt.
1. If you want to undertake a challenge you can’t go far wrong if you’ve got Paul (Mr Stubborn)
Cooper and Hobbit onboard.
2. Always use the biggest scale map you can. The rules stated we had to carry the smaller scale
map, so that’s what we thought you had to use. Every other team we met were actually working off
the larger scale maps providing so much extra detail to help them navigate. Definitely a handicap
for our team.
High Points.
1. Taking my boots off at the finish and being greeted with a mug of tea, egg and chips.
2. The amazingly friendly and encouraging marshals/check point manners on route
Low Points.
And this was probably even lower for Paul than it was Hobbit and myself. . .
Paul getting stomach cramps during the night stretch. The marshals looked ready to medically
retire him from the race at one point.
Am I glad I did it? Most definitely
Would I do it again? Yesterday the answer was NO! Today. . . I’m already thinking about honing
my navigation skills.

Gatliff Marathon 29th November
1 Hastings Runner completed the 50km, and 6 completed the 35km. A very warm day, for the time
of year, no rain, and the wind only started late in the day. However, the serious amount of mud did
slow everyone down - this was not a year for a PB -except for the Gatliff virgins! Well done to
everyone, a sterling effort, no one lost the route, and you are all did the Club proud. Paul Cooper

MONDAY EVENING TRACK SESSIONS
These sessions are proving very popular at present and are ideal for those wanting to improve their
race times, as track work will improve your pace judgment; get you used to running hard when you
are tired; and will benefit you far more than the usual diet of steady/slow runs. You can all improve
if you are prepared to put in some hard work, whether your target is to run a sub 35mins or sub
65mins 10kms! The whole session including warm up and warm down lasts 50 – 60 mins; during
which time most runners will have only spent 15 – 20mins running anaerobically (ie getting into
oxygen debt). We are currently using a staggered start, with everyone setting off at the same time
but at various intervals dotted round the track. This makes for some very tightly contested reps, and
gives everyone an incentive. Meet 18.20pm for 18.30pm prompt start at William Parker athletics
track in Parkstone Road, Hastings; parking close by in Park Avenue, off Park View. Cost £2.50pp
which goes towards the club’s hire costs; under 18s free. Nick Brown
HASTINGS PARKRUN
Many highlights during the past month, in particular being voted in the top 10 of UK parkruns (from
over 350!) by The Running Bug community. A race (yes I know it should be "run!") win for
Rebecca Danahy getting her first ladies course win; whilst there were 2nd/3rd placings for Nina
Lambrou, Gina Noves, Nyree Thomson and Darren Barzee.
After 34 events Wendy Brampton is 2nd in the ladies’ competition on 2425 pts, with Sue Palmer
4th on 2214 pts. 153 Hastings Runners have now taken part in the parkrun! Many thanks to our
excellent core team including Anthony Gardner; Arrianne Callow; Peter Cocker; Erica Wilson;
Helen Brown; Natasha Slow; Sarah Marzioli and Steve Uzzell - Anthony, Erica and myself have
all now qualified for the very nice purple "25" volunteers t-shirt. A community event, this relies
solely on volunteers ... if you've been running regularly but haven't helped out yet; then please
contact [email protected] Nick Brown, event director

Christmas card
At our last members meeting it was decided to support Xtrax and Surviving Christmas principally as
beneficiaries of our Christmas card donation box but also to help them promote themselves as a
Christmas charity in general therefore see below some information on what they do.
Surviving Christmas
This charity works with the most vulnerable people in our locality principally the old, mentally ill and
homeless. Surviving Christmas will for instance provide a Christmas hamper for the elderly living
alone, gifts for children in very low income families and especially at Christmas lonely or people
without facilities to provide for themselves can benefit from our Open Christmas, on 25th-26th
December at The Salvation Army Hall, St Andrews Square, Hastings, TN34 1SP. We need your
support so we can deliver these projects.
How you can help?
Monetary donations can be made online at http://www.btplc.com/mydonate. This is the most
efficient way to donate and our preferred method of accepting donations. Thank You
Xtrax
Xtrax is an independent, registered charity working for young people aged 16-24 in Hastings &
Rother. Regardless of gender, belief, sexuality or personal history, we provide a safe space where
they can get help and support from non-judgemental staff and volunteers, no matter what issues are
affecting them.
Xtrax provides a truly holistic approach to helping young people overcome problems, address
immediate issues affecting them and build stable, successful lives for the future. From our easy to
access location in Hastings Town Centre young people will find a friendly welcome, eat a nutritious,
home-cooked meal, take a shower, do their laundry, access free internet and telephones or just
relax in a warm, friendly environment with their peers.
An easy way to support Xtrax is to go to www.Xtrax.org and click on the donate tab. Thank you
In early December there will be a large Christmas card left at Horntye for members to leave
a Christmas message to others much the same as a card but without writing so many. The idea is
that whilst writing this message you are invited to make a donation in the box provided or go on line
and contribute in that way.

Boxing Day Run
There will be a run from the Cove Pub in Fairlight at 11am on 26/12.
The pub will provide soup/bread for £3.50 per person.
If you would like some then I need to know by 22/12 so that they have an idea of numbers. There
will be a vege option. A few last minute requests on the day will be OK but ideally if you can confirm
by 22/12 it will help with the catering.
Many thanks Replies either to my email [email protected] or message me on face
book.
Brighton marathon places
Hi to those that missed out on the VLM draw this year
The club has been offered two places in the Brighton Marathon (they still have to be paid for
mind) and having considered the options on how to allocate said places it has been decided to offer
them to those runners who were unsuccessful in the London Marathon ballot.
So could anybody that does NOT want to be entered in this ballot please let Steph know at
[email protected] by Jan 2nd so that the ballot can be held at the January members
meeting on 6th January. Many thanks. Tim
Running Story
118 a Brief Running History in Time
So where did it all begin?
Part 1 In the Gene’s
My Dad Peter Webb used to run cross country with what was then BAAC (Bexhill Amateur Athletic
Club) and also ran for Sussex. He has many medals from back in the late 40s at various distances
and still has his old pair of spikes that look like plimsolls with nails put through. He told me that
there were no coaches then they just used to turn up and run in their plimsolls! He ran with a
couple of local men who some might have heard of Frank Wicks, who won the Morpeth to
Newcastle road race (26miles) it was not called a Marathon then and Cecile Ballard who pipped
dad in to second place in most races Dad was also lucky enough to go and watch the 1948
Olympic games through the running club and saw the great Fanny Blankers Koen win many of her
races, so I think running was in my gene’s, it just took about 35 years for me to find them. My first
race I remember taking part in was The Lee Cooper (note the jean connection lol) 10.66 I have
two trophies one from 1991 and another that is not dated so possibly the year before or after.
Part 2 The Occasional runner
Jump 8 years and for some reason I ran Hastings ½ in 1999, think I was part of a team for
Marshall Tufflex, who I used to work for, no idea of my time, I used to smoke then but I must have
finished as I have a horse brass. After that my running was a bit patchy although looking through
the shoe boxes full of finishers medals it would appear that I ran the Hasting ½ most years and
have a recorded time in 2005 of 1.50.59 guess I was going for the under 2 hours.
Part 3 Hastings runners
So this is where it really begins the announcement of a one off Hastings Marathon appealed to me
as I had never run that far before and I had stopped smoking and my times where slowly
improving. I was starting to go out for longer runs on my own but soon realised that I was going to
have to train a bit harder if I wanted to get under 4 ½ to 5 hours so I turned up one night at
Hastings Runners HQ .What an amazing friendly bunch of people I could not have been made
more welcome I think my first run was with Mike and Sally I am not sure how far but it felt good to
be running with others, I remember when I ran with Sally’s group I would always ask her where we
were going and would run ahead only to be called back as the route would change after a few
time I got wise to this and did not run off.
Mike soon spotted that I had the potential to run quicker and that my target time for the marathon
should be under 4 hours so he put me in a different group, a quick thank you here to the many that
helped me in those early days at the club I managed to achieve a 3.44.35 Marathon and was over
the moon it would not have been possible without the help of the other club runners and coaches.
After the Hastings Marathon I have continued to run and train with HRs taking part in 100s of
races throughout the years my times gradually improving till getting a 1.33 Hasting half in 2010
and a 1.31 PB at Lydd 1/2 a couple of year ago. I have also been lucky enough to get in to The
London Marathon for the last 4 years and managed to achieve a PB this year of 3.30.
A couple of years ago Mike asked me to be a coach a role that I thoroughly enjoy and hope that I am helping others
to become better runners as previous and present coaches have helped me please remember I am not that scary a
coach I had the pleasure of taking the improver group a few weeks ago the largest group I have had for ages and
everyone got back safely so please don’t be afraid of me when they say I am taking a group.
Part 4 The End bits
So that’s it a brief history of how I ended up running and changing from Nick Webb to 118 in 15
years
I have enjoyed some great races and battles for places since joining Hastings runners thanks to all
the hard work put in by everyone in the club the encouragement and support from everyone is
fantastic. Hearing the race Marshalls cheer you on at club races is brilliant encouragement and the
relief of seeing the hard-core Hastings runner’s spectators who have been standing on the
embankment for hours just to cheer you on in the last few 100 meters at the London Marathon is
worth every gruelling previous mile.
I look forward to many more training evenings and races with a great bunch of people

HR Meeting 2nd December 2015
Members present: 17
Apologies: Cassie and Bruce Colvin; Andy Bashford; Paul Sargent; Riz Maslen; Liz Winchester; Tony Demarco; Nigel
Thornley; Mary Chantler; Alison Tanner
Before the meeting proper, Marcia from St Michael’s Hospice spoke about the Santa Fun Run – see below. She asked if anyone
could volunteer to be a sweeper for the 5k. 2 HR had already volunteered to marshal on the day. Marcia has unexpectedly acquired
a London Marathon Place, for sponsorship of £1,500, to be raised via Virgin Money Giving. These conditions will be pointed out to
those whoare already in the ballot because of rejections.
Minutes of Last Meeting - Matters Arising: as per
Correspondence: Steph – letter from Association of Running Clubs enclosing a sweatshirt which they suggested could be given as
an award at the club prizegiving. The sweatshirt is also for sale on their website.
England Athletics – personal affiliation fee will be increased to £13 next year. Individual members may be able to do their own
annual subscriptions via the site. Rob had a query about payment of subscription via the club which Steph answered.
Membership: 353 members currently. This is probably the highest membership in recent times. Anthony queried how long
someone remains a member when the membership year has begun and they have not paid. There was discussion around this. Kim
said that in the coming year, everyone will be sent an email by the membership software. Steve W felt there should be only a short
period of grace.
Treasurer: Rob distributed his report for November 2015. Quiet month. Balance similar to last month. Rob ran through a few details
of recent income/outgoings. There has been a glitch with track payments to William Parker but is being resolved. Rob mentioned
internet banking as a possible improvement (for discussion – he will make enquiries and it will be put on agenda for a future
meeting.)
Running Reports:
7/11/15 – Bexhill Poppy Half Marathon (HRC), 10k and 5k. Steve W reported – some organisational issues eg bag drop and wrong
date on medal. Weather was atrocious for the half. The new route is an improvement.
15/11/15 – Club 5k (HRC) A very windy day for it this year but around 53 HR turned out.
22/11/15 – XC Snape Wood –Steve had an accident, unfortunately, breaking a bone. (He said he had been due a break but did not
have that in mind!) He had some comments about the fact that he was advised he could walk back to the race HQ, which was quite
a way from the start/finish. 230 runners took part.
23/11/15 – Anthony, Liz and Max accompanied Ben on his continuing challenge of a marathon a day, at Watford this time.
29/11/15 – Crowborough 10k (HRC and SGP). Arianne enjoyed it; mild but windy conditions. Excellent marshalling. Good facilities.
29/11/15 – Gatliff 50 km and 30 km. Paul Cooper ran the longer race; several HR ran the shorter distance. Anthony enjoyed the
event, 6 HR ran together on the 30k. Extremely muddy and slippery.
Running Due:
6/12/15 – Mince Pie 10k. Sarah has a place if anyone wants it.
6/12/15 – Downland Devil 9 mile run
12/12/15 – St Michael’s Hospice Santa Run - see above. The event is on a Saturday but is scheduled for after the Parkrun.
12/12/15 – The Conga 10k at William Parker – part of Nigel’s current challenge.
13/12/15 – X-country, Framfield. 3rd in the series of 6 races.
19/12/15 – Ashburnham Christmas Pudding Dash (HRC)
26/12/15 – HR Boxing Day run from The Cove Inn, Fairlight, 11 am start.
Sussex Grand Prix – Kim & Steph. attended the AGM; 2 fewer races next year - Chichester 10k as well as Worthing 20 mile. SGP
have voted for transfers of numbers between runners to be possible right up to the day of the event. Kim gave a report on HRs who
have competed in 89 SGP races. We should do quite well as a club in the team ratings. Prizegiving will be on 10th February
(possibly near Hellingly, to be advised.) Club subscriptions are rising to £50 (ie £5 more than last year.)
Hastings Half: Eric reported entries are up on the usual numbers for this time of year. He spoke about medical cover, which is
under discussion presently. He referred to Steve’s experience at the recent cross country. Eric is expecting armies of Saxons and
Normans (fancy dress!) Eric is working out how to cope with the logistics of Parkrun taking place when barriers are due to be put up
on the Saturday before the race. Eric had heard that UKA may increase non-members’ race entry fees to £3 more than members
pay.
Hastings 5m: Vic – there is an issue with the course, as mentioned last meeting, entry to the car park at the far western end of the
course is via the cycle path, which would conflict with the race route. The matter is in hand.
Parkrun: Nick not present. Hastings Parkrun has been voted one of the top 10 in the country by Runbug.com. It is going very well.
Training Nights and Coaching:
Social Media: Kim reported all OK. No more Champs results will be published until prize-giving. Tim had a query about the email
contact details from membership software and how this may be put into a format where everyone can be contacted via group email.
Social Secretary: Andy not present but, via Steph, wanted to thank the Tonies for the recent quiz. Parkrun main volunteers will be
having a get-together at Bo-Peep shortly (email has been sent) Tim had had a request from park run to fund a part of their thank you
evening and took the executive decision to fund such to the tune of £50. There were no objections. Richard will be organising festive
11
drinks on 19th December; Social – discussion re food arrangements. Arianne has spoken with the Angling Club who could provide a
finger buffet, which could accommodate various dietary requirements, at £5 per person. Arianne proposed this should be funded by
the club and there was discussion around this. Rob gave some details about surplus funds over the past few years. Tickets will cost
£5 the same as last year and Kim will be in charge of printing tickets. These suggestions were officially proposed by Arianne,
seconded by Nick Webb. This was agreed by majority vote.
AOB –
First Aid Kit – Steph is getting a First Aid Kit together to keep at Horntye and Cassie has volunteered to maintain it.
London Marathon Draw – Two club places and one from St Michael’s Hospice, see above. It was agreed that the St Michael’s
place will be drawn at a later date, after advising those in the draw. Steve proposed that the sponsorship place should be open to all;
Jan seconded; this was carried. Tim to check with Marcia when she needs the name and this place will be advertised via
Googlegroups and Facebook. Tim to check registrations with EA as this is a condition of entry to the ballot.
First club place – Nick Webb
Second club place – Sarah Hughes
First Reserve – Kim Callow
Second Reserve – Terry Kitson
Third Reserve – Natasha Slow
Fourth Reserve – Sarah Bendle
Champs races 2016 – Proposed list has been advertised via HR Googlegroups and Newsletter. Nick proposed Canterbury 10 mile
should be reinstated and there was discussion around this but it was not voted in. Eric suggested the less popular Bexhill Poppy
Half could be substituted by Ashford Half Marathon or Barns Green. Barns Green was agreed. HR club only races will be confirmed
at a later date. The confirmed list will be published as soon as possible.
Off road venue donations – Tim proposed that there should be a donation (the same as last year) for Icklesham Parish Council for
summer off road venue.
Coach of the Year: Paul mentioned this and whether there should be a fairer way of voting for the coach of the year. Too late to
change for this year as voting slip will go into December newsletter but should be considered for next year.
Xtrax – Jan mentioned the proposal for HR(s) and others to run Hastings Half on behalf of Xtrax and asked if club would sponsor
running vests for this. Jan also asked if any Xtrax members were interested in running with HR that they could come to the track on
Mondays without paying the fee. Jan to look into the vests and plan to include ‘sponsored by Hastings Runners’.
Noticeboard – can it be fixed as results are just ripped off the board, now the Perspex door is missing.
Christmas card – has now been made up, as well as a collecting box. Tim / Steph to discuss how to look after the cash.
Nigel’s Advent Challenge – Steve asked for support for Nigel’s 10k runs (daily through December). Venues are advertised in the
newsletter / Googlegroups / Facebook.
Meeting closed at 9:15 pm. Next meeting – 8 pm on Wednesday 6th January 2016 at Horntye.
