Hastings Runners Newsletter August 2015 Affiliated to England Athletics, South of England Athletic Association and Sussex County Amateur Athletic Association http://www.hastingsrunners.org.uk HERSTMONCEUX CASTLE RELAYS 5th August A tremendous performance from the senior men's team, coming 3rd out of a record field of 98 teams - the club's highest ever placing in the relays! A superb opening leg by Leo Cacciatore (7.51) put the team in 3rd place, and they maintained this position with strong runs from Patrick Bermingham (8.38), Jack Madden (8.13) and Matt Edmonds (7.46) on the anchor leg. Combined time was 32.28. The 1.50mile legs are over a demanding course within the grounds of this iconic castle; 50% off road, 50% tarmac paths. The men's vets team (winners last year) were not at full strength, but performed very creditably to finish runners-up just 1mins 38secs behind a very strong Hastings AC quartet. Very encouraging runs by newcomer Darren Barzee (8.30) and Mike Beaumont, returning from injury (8.11). Combined time 35.37; 17th overall. The senior men's B team also performed very well, coming 21st in a time of 36.20 with Phil Scott's opening leg of 8.38 the pick of the runs. We also fielded a Hastings parkrun team, who finished a creditable 82nd in a time of 47.20 with 8yr old Phoebe Cote getting a rousing reception as she crossed the line on the final leg! 1 However the real drama lay, as last year, in the battle for the HR mixed team trophy with no fewer than 9 teams handicapped closely together competing for this. Just 23 secs separated the first 6 teams after 6 undulating miles, and 81secs covered all 9 teams at the finish! A strong opening leg by Riz Maslen (9.04) gave Team 3 a 30secs lead over the chasing pack. However Gareth Hodges with the quickest 2nd leg (10.03) gave Team 9 a 12secs lead over Team 3; with Team 2 a further 28secs back in 3rd. Scott Parsons extended Team 9's lead on the 3rd leg (10.24) to 41secs; with Team 1 moving up from 5th to 2nd thanks to a fine leg by Hannah Hayler (10.04); Team 3 now 22secs back in 3rd place. However setting off in an unpromising 6th place, a fine anchor leg by Steve Uzzell (11.09) brought Team 7 victory with just 5secs to spare from Team 2 for whom Martin Noakes (setting off in 9th place and on his 2nd leg of the evening!) produced a superb run in 8.56 to finish 6secs clear of Elaine Williams for Team 1 in 3rd. 1st Team 7; Martin Tytherleigh, Katie Arnold, Paul Warburton, Steve Uzzell ... 43.13 2nd Team 2; Mark James, Helen Brown, Henry Worthington, Martin Noakes ... 43.18 3rd Team 1; Simon Trevena, David Todd, Hannah Hayler, Elaine Williams ..... 43.24 Fastest men's times: Matt Edmonds 7.46; Leo Cacciatore 7.51; Mike Beaumont 8.11; Jack Madden 8.13; Darren Barzee 8.30; Phil Scott 8.36; Patrick Bermingham 8.38; Martin Noakes 8.43 and 8.56 Fastest ladies times: Riz Maslen 9.04; Hannah Hayler 10.04; Melissa Bedwell 10.16; Helen Brown 10.43; Rachael White 10.47; Carol Lowes 10.58. 2 HR 5K Handicap Race 22/07/2015 Name JULIE BEERLING LOUISE COATES STEVEN WILLIS SARAH HYLAND HENRY WORTHINGTON GARY LANCASTER ARRIANNE CALLOW CHARLOTTE RANDALL ANDY KNIGHT BILL EDMONDSON JONAS RUMPELT VICTORIA WILLIS SIMONE RANDALL SUE PALMER CAMERON HUGHES KATIE ARNOLD MARIE APPLETON ANDY EDMONDS SHAZRA DOBBS WES GARNER MIKE FOORD LIZ WINCHESTER IRENE KITSON KELVIN LOWES ANNETTE FRY PAUL WARBURTON MARIA TROTMAN MIKE ELLIS TREVOR BARRETT ADAM BOLLAND HELEN MUNDAY FRASER HUGHES HANNAH HAYLER ANDY BASHFORD JACK ABBOTT Actual Time 00:31:17 00:28:08 00:20:27 00:28:35 00:31:36 00:24:51 00:30:21 00:30:42 00:21:15 00:25:18 00:18:00 00:31:04 00:31:05 00:29:20 00:20:06 00:25:37 00:23:39 00:21:04 00:27:40 00:25:51 00:26:22 00:25:55 00:30:10 00:22:46 00:27:36 00:23:37 00:25:59 00:25:51 00:24:21 00:24:04 00:28:25 00:21:56 00:22:08 00:24:29 00:20:52 Name NICOLETTE HOWARD STACEY HAYLER LEE MILLER TAMSIN FREEMANTLE JANICE YOUNG ANTHONY GARDNER SPENCER GODDEN JOSH MARKETIS JAMIE KENNEDY JANE HUGHES DAVID BRATBY JESSICA CULL MICHAEL JOHNSON BECKY KERRY HELEN BROWN GARY FOSTER RICHARD COATES MARTIN NOAKES RACHAEL WHITE STEVEN WOOD KEN HUGHES DANNY HOLYOAKE JACOB WILKINSON MIKE BEAUMONT KATY SUMNER DEBRA VAN AALST WENDY BRAMPTON TIM BONES NIGEL THORNELY LUKE EVANS LYNDA MUGGRIDGE MARTIN TYTHERLEIGH KATHERINE HILL RIZ MASLEN PETER NOAKES Actual Time 00:24:43 00:24:14 00:24:06 00:26:17 00:24:07 00:21:52 00:22:38 00:24:42 00:21:48 00:26:20 00:22:10 00:24:41 00:26:52 00:24:03 00:23:52 00:17:11 00:22:03 00:18:44 00:24:59 00:25:00 00:20:05 00:23:46 00:18:47 00:18:48 00:23:33 00:26:35 00:24:16 00:20:17 00:22:48 00:21:54 00:22:49 00:22:10 00:32:20 00:20:13 00:24:45 Name ALISON CAMPBELL ERIC HARDWICK DEAN FOX SCOTT PARSONS VAUGHAN WHEATLEY MARK GOODMAN ELAINE WILLIAMS ROGER MANDRY STEPH MILLER TIM BELL LISA PETERSON HAYLEY RANSON STEVEN SELLERS CASSIE COLVIN ROLAND BAINES DAVID TODD MARK DOBBS SARAH BENDLE JOE MOORE ALICE HOILE SIMON WORONIECKI ROBERT CLARIDGE KIM CALLOW TERRY KITSON GARETH HODGES NICK WEBB DAVE PENDLETON MARK LUTMAN DAYAN BRATBY STEVE UZZELL MAUREEN KEITH FRANK KEITH MIKE HALL Actual Time 00:32:17 00:28:50 00:22:44 00:22:56 00:24:28 00:18:25 00:27:31 00:24:42 00:24:18 00:18:48 00:30:14 00:30:56 00:24:06 00:24:18 00:22:34 00:25:40 00:18:45 00:24:52 00:24:23 00:32:14 00:26:16 00:36:28 00:25:09 00:27:41 00:22:48 00:21:25 00:25:05 00:22:10 00:30:37 00:27:09 00:35:35 00:35:35 00:27:59 A club record turnout of 103 runners took part in a memorable 5kms handicap race along the seafront, with 96 runners finishing within 3mins of each other - the peak flow was 47 runners within 60secs! Timekeepers Mary Chantler and Sue Hall did a sterling job in the circumstances, backed up by cameraman Sam Harrison whose video footage has reached viral proportions! The first runner to set off was Bob Claridge; Gary Foster was the last runner away some 18mins 15secs later! The first 10 runners were all ahead of the handicapper; none more so than the winner Julie Beerling who finished 20secs ahead of runner-up Louise Coates - both ladies displaying race form that hadn't been at all evident during the previous 12 months! 3rd finisher and 1st man home was Steve Willis with a huge pb; the next 95 came in thick and fast with fine runs by Sarah Hyland (4th); Henry Worthington (5th); Gary Lancaster (6th) and Arrianne Callow (7th). 3 Fastest men - Gary Foster 17.11; Jonas Rumpelt 18.00; Mark Goodman 18.25; Martin Noakes 18.44; Mark Dobbs 18.45; Jake Wilkinson 18.47 Fastest women - Riz Maslen 20.13; Hannah Hayler 22.08; Lynda Muggridge 22.49; Katy Sumner 23.33; Marie Appleton 23.39; Helen Brown 23.52 Most places gained - Jonas Rumpelt 85!!; Steve Willis 77; Cameron Hughes 75; Andy Edmonds 67; Andy Knight 65 Best sprint finish - David Todd who created his own finishing funnel and eventually pulled up at Galley Hill! 31 runners finished within 15secs of their predicted times - closest were Steven Wood spot on!; Danny Holyoake, Martin Noakes and Rachael White (1sec); Richard Coates and Jake Wilkinson (2secs); Mike Beaumont and Katy Sumner (3secs); Gary Foster (4secs); Debra van Aalst and Ken Hughes (5secs) Ahead of the handicapper - Julie Beerling (2mins 43secs); Louise Coates (2.22); Steve Willis (1.43); Sarah Hyland (1.43); Henry Worthington (1.39) Closest family rivalries - Hannah and Stacey Hayler (33rd & 37th); Charlotte and Simone Randall (8th & 13th); Steve & Vicky Willis (3rd & 12th). Riz also formed part of the Career Legal ladies team (winners on 3 previous occasion) who finished 2nd behind HSBC. Individual results were: Martin Noakes .......18.31 (143rd); Riz Maslen ...... 19.48 (301st) HASTINGS PARKRUN Many highlights during the past month or so, with race (yes I know it should be "run!") wins for Matt Edmonds (twice) and Jonas Rumpelt (our temporary loan signing from Germany!); second places for Jack Madden (twice) and Leo Cacciatore; 3rd place for Mike Beaumont (twice); first lady home for Riz Maslen; and finally an age grading course record for Sylvia Huggett. As a guide, 70-80% is recognised as being county standard; 80-90% national standard. 22 other HRs have also recorded scores of 70% plus: Steph Miller 76.43%; Kim Brown 76.41%; Ken Hughes 76.35%; Leo Cacciatore 75.95%; Roland Baines 75.40%; Matt Edmonds 74.85%; Stuart Piper 74.40%; Mario Quecchia 74.34%; Janice Young 73.93%; Mark Dobbs 73.91%; Jenna French 73.21%; Jack Madden 72.50%; David Bratby 72.16%;Wendy Brampton 71.95%; David Bargery 71.70%; Helen Brown 71.57%; Erica Wilson 71.20%; Mike Berry 70.93%; Craig Weston 70.87%; Roger Mandry 70.26%; Piers Bruning 70.25%; Tim Bones 70.10%. Nick Brown MONDAY EVENING TRACK SESSIONS These sessions are ideal for those wanting to improve their race times as track work will improve your pace judgment; get you used to running hard when you are tired; and will benefit you far more than the usual diet of steady/slow runs. Age and ability are immaterial … you can all improve if you are prepared to put in some hard work, whether your target is to run a sub 35mins or sub 65mins 10kms! The whole session including warm up and warm down lasts 50 – 60 mins; during which time most runners will have only spent 15 – 20mins running anaerobically (ie getting into oxygen debt). We are currently using a staggered start, with everyone setting off at the same time but at various intervals dotted round the track. This makes for some very tightly contested reps, and gives everyone an incentive. Meet 18.20pm for 18.30pm prompt start at William Parker athletics track in Parkstone Road, Hastings; parking close by in Park Avenue, off Park View. Cost £2pp which goes towards the club’s hire costs. Nick Brown 6 Tuesday off road venues with post codes for Sat. Nav. Ladies Run in the Park Weds 19th August. This is for ALL abilities. A lovely route in Alexandra Park approx 3 miles Start 7pm at the cafe. I will be jogging down with ladies from Horntye at 6.30. I am looking for marshals and traditionally the route has been covered by men. Are you able to help? If so let me know. Many thanks Steph Alternative 10k run/walk Saturday 19th September 10.30 This is in no way a snub at the Link road 10k race on the 20th but as it suggests an alternative for those less enthused but the building of roads with dubious motives and also a celebration of off road running in an area we cherish. It is hoped that we will assemble at Upper Wilting Farm by kind permission of the Blackford family and proceed to run or walk as near 10k as we can over a route yet to be determined. There will be more detail as time goes on but for now if you would like to join us on this run we are planning to ask for a donation of £5 in the hope we can raise some funds for the Hospice fire fund. Now I know this will be the day before Rye to Hastings but this will be far from a competitive race and I imagine most of us will just take it easy and enjoy hence the opportunity to walk it as well. I will keep you posted as to progress. Tim Jury Sunday 30th August Run for Africa Cherry Garden Farm Fairlight Many of you will know that every year I hold the Ride for Africa which is a horse ride that has attracted many horses and riders from all over the locality. A few years back I got to thinking this would also make a fine run so anyone who would like to join the running group they will be heading off just before the first horses go at 9am, it is not a race although one could run it as such if you wanted. The route is clearly marked out but there are no marshals. It is a 10 mile route through some very picturesque countryside over paths not normally open to the public so why not come along and give it a try you can go as fast or slow as you like many will be walking it anyway. All I ask is a £5 donation there are free refreshments half way round and an opportunity to buy a burger or hot dog at the end. You will be supporting a very worthy cause. Any questions? Call or text me on 07734282494 7 HASTINGS PARKRUN VOLUNTEERING IN SEPTEMBER With a weekly average of 140 from the 17 events so far, no fewer than 123 Hastings Runners have already taken part in the 5kms seafront run. And at the current rate of progress, we should reach the 500 mark for new park runners who have registered at Hastings within the next 2 - 3 weeks which is an amazing statistic! Hastings Runners make up 80% of the marshals and volunteers each week, and there is no doubt that without the club's input the parkrun would be difficult to sustain. I am going to be away for much of September, during which period the organisation will be in the capable hands of run directors Arrianne Callow and Anthony Gardner. However it would be extremely helpful for them if I can organise the weekly volunteer roster for this period in advance. For those of you who have done a few parkruns but haven't helped out yet, this would be an ideal opportunity to give something back .... particularly as you probably won't be running on the Saturdays in question as there are major local races on Sunday 13th and Sunday 20th September. So if you are available to assist on any of the following Saturdays .... 12th, 19th and 26th September .... please let me know. Full instructions are emailed out 3 - 4 days in advance. You need to report in at 8.30am, and in most cases you will be finished by 9.30 9.45am. Many thanks, Nick Brown (event director). Email [email protected] Dordrecht 10K & Half Marathon There is a 10k and half marathon run in our Dutch twin town of Dordrecht on November 1st. We have been offered free entry to the races and the possibility of being hosted with runners although I can also recommend an inexpensive hotel. The Dordrecht runners have always supported the Hastings Half Marathon and we have not reciprocated the visit for a long while. There are also events for younger runners. You can see the details at www.drechtstedenloop.nl if you can read Dutch, or you might be able to get a translation via Google. There is also some video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGSWnux8aEg ,although this tends to concentrate on the front end of the half marathon. I am assured that these events are open to fun runners as well as the serious athletes. It would be great if we could get a group over there again and if we do I would suggest going over on Friday Oct 30th so that the Saturday can be spend seeing Dordrecht and then returning after the events on Sunday November 1st. Please contact me for further details or to register your interest either by e mail or 01424 432258 or at Tuesday evening club gatherings. 8 HR Meeting 12th August 2015 Members present: 20 Apologies: Janice Young, Pres Paul Cabban, Andy Bashford, Bruce Colvin, Mary C, Susan Hall Matters Arising: Thanks for Corrina for last month in chair Correspondence: Robert Cameron-Wood has advised of his wish to change his first claim from Hastings Runners to 100 Marathon Club.
