Fish & FISHING
Snook Kingdom
George "Grif" Griffin
"Snook are the funnest fish that swim," says
Grif. Fun to watch under pier lights as they
smash passing minnows. Fun to hook and lose
as they leap and shake their heads. Fun to land,
to put in the net, to put back in the water to be
caught another day. And yes, fun to eat, too. This essential
guide to snookery tells where to find the wily Centropomus
undecimalis (and cousins), what bait and lures to use, and
most important—how to think like a snook. It includes 22
snookin’ hot spots—11 on each coast. Size 8.5" x 11", 128 pages,

The Living Dock
Jack Rudloe
Here, using pictures and non-technical text, the
authors show what shells and other seashore
creatures look like, on the beach. Forty-five
species are included, with species accounts
that give interesting details about the organisms that created
the shells: what they eat, typical behaviors, predators, color
variations, anatomical adaptations, reproductive methods, etc.
Sometimes, a dock isn’t just a dock, it’s a
habitat. The author’s floating dock nurtures
an abundance of marine life. His dock supplies specimens to research and teaching
institutions. This entertaining and educational
book looks at the life histories of some of these
creatures and recounts Rudloe’s experiences in collecting
them, in the process examining man’s relationship with the
natural world. Size 6" x 9", 264 pages, paperback, index, line illustrations

Jack and Ann Rudloe search the "wilderness
coast"—that portion of the Florida Panhandle
that juts south into the Gulf of Mexico—for
unusual sea creatures and the answers
to puzzling biological questions. Like any
profession, specimen collecting has attendant
hazards: being slashed by a sawfish, zapped by an electric
ray, nipped by a sea turtle, or attacked by an alligator. More
perilous yet is being caught offshore in a violent storm in a
less-than-seaworthy boat. Size 6" x 9", 288 pages, paperback, index,

The Nature of Florida’s
Ocean Life
Including Coral Reefs, Gulf Stream,
Sargasso Sea and Sunken Ships
Cathy Katz
This book looks at Florida’s ocean as a habitat,
a community of elaborate mini-creatures swimming next to bulky saltwater giants. Drifting alongside these
living creatures are inanimate objects—bottles, nurdles,
rafts, toys and tar blobs—lost or tossed from cargo ships.
They float in the Sargasso Sea or flow with the Gulf Stream,
sometimes drifting to Florida’s east coast to become part of
the sea wrack—the flotsam and jetsam that we find when
strolling on the shore. Size 8.5" x 11", 80 pages, pen and ink illustrations

The Book of the Everglades
Susan Cerulean, Editor
Nine Florida Stories
Marjory Stoneman Douglas
In nearly two dozen essays contributed by
Archie Carr, Carl Hiaasen, Jeff Klinkenberg, Al
Burt, Renée Ripple, Susan Orlean and others, it
describes the natural features of the five areas
of the Everglades ecosystem. Drawing on all
the talents of southern storytellers, the book
recounts the often outlandish attempts to tame the "river of
grass" and reveals how much is invested—and risked—in
the ambitious Everglades Recovery Plan. Size 6" x 9", 280 pages.
The stories in this collection, diverse in plot and
theme, take place in a scattering of South Florida
settings. Among the drama of hurricanes and
plane crashes, of kidnappers, escaped convicts
and smugglers, Douglas plant flags that mark
the stories as her own: plume hunters who
threaten Florida’s ibises, irrational schemes to drain the
Everglades, what happens when human beings collide with
nature in the form of water, weather, or wildlife. Size 6" x 9", 216

Ecology of a Cracker Childhood
Janisse Ray
The author grew up in a junkyard along U.S.
Highway 1, hidden from Florida-bound vacationers by the hedge at the end of the road and
by hulks of old cars and stacks of blown-out
tires. Her autobiography, at once colloquial and
elegiac, tells how a childhood spent in rural
isolation and steeped in religious fundamentalism grew into a
passion to save the almost vanished longleaf pine ecosystem
that once covered the South.Size 5.5" x 8.5", 224 pages, paperback.

Bringing Nature Home
How You Can Sustain Wildlife with
Native Plants
Douglas W. Tallamy
There is an unbreakable link between native
plant species and native wildlife. Most native
insects cannot, or will not, eat alien plants. When
native plant species disappear, the insects disappear, thus
impoverishing the food source for birds and other animals.
In many parts of the world, habitat destruction has been so
extensive that local wildlife populations are in crisis and may
be headed toward extinction. By planting natives, everyone
can provide a welcoming environment for wildlife. By acting
on Douglas Tallamy’s practical recommendations, everyone
can make a difference. Size 6" x 9", 360 pages, full color, paperback,

the current price. Publishers also sell out of titles and decide not to reprint them. When this happens we will often suggest
and offer a title with similar content. We appreciate your understanding.

after the catalog goes to print, more specialized, or limited in availability are place on our Web site: www.floridabooks.
com. If you have suggestions on a book we should carry or are looking for a specific title, please provide us with as much
information as possible, and we will go to work for you and do everything we can to locate and supply those titles to you.
