Many of our recipients would not be able to
stay in their homes without the generosity
of our supporters. When you donate to or
volunteer with Lubbock Meals on Wheels,
you can immediately see the positive
difference you make. All of your support
stays local and benefits our community.
Our volunteers are not only our eyes, ears,
and wheels; they are our strength. Our
donors and volunteers live out the words
of some of the greatest minds in history.
They represent how one person can make
a difference every day. #LocallyStrong

National Volunteer Appreciation Week is
April 10-16 this year. Lubbock Meals on
Wheels will show our appreciation for our
many volunteers at the Annual Volunteer
Appreciation Reception. This year’s theme
is Asian, and will be held at 6:00p.m. Friday,
April 22nd, at Indiana Avenue Baptist
Church, 9507 Indiana Avenue. We will
serve a light meal and dessert, provide live
music, have a few surprises, and award many
for their years of service.
FACT: According to IRS data, people in
the lower and middle income brackets dig
deep. In fact, the research found that the less
someone earns, the more likely they are to
give money to help others.
Happy Birthday…to US!
Lubbock Meals on Wheels turns
45 years old in April, 2016!
In March of 2016 Lubbock Meals
on Wheels served an average of
717 meals each weekday and an
average 183 weekend meals.
That’s 54 routes a day! Currently
our youngest recipient is 20 years
old, and our oldest recipient is 106
years old.
“When I stand before
God at the end of my life,
I would have hope that I
would not have a single bit
of talent left, and I could
say, ‘I used everything you
gave me’”. ~Erma Bombeck
In the past year, we have lost several of our
precious volunteers. May special memories
comfort all of their families and friends, and
may their loved ones find peace very soon.

Thanks to LMOW’s Corporate Delivery Volunteers
One way that Lubbock Meals on Wheels is able to ensure meal delivery to so many people is
through our Corporate Volunteer Program. LMOW currently has 36 corporate volunteers and
8 group volunteers. These are organizations that commit to deliver meals one or more days each
month. Some of the groups have just one volunteer, others rotate through various people in their
organization. Call 806-792-7971 to get your business/organization signed up!

FACT: The 2011 Deloitte Volunteer IMPACT survey found that over 50% of Millennial
employees that volunteer through their company are very loyal toward their company, proud to
work there, satisfied with their employer, and likely to recommend their company to a friend.
And Millennial employees who participate in a company’s volunteer program are more than twice
as likely to rate their work culture as “very positive,” as compared to those who don’t volunteer.
We have
‘GROUND BREAKING’
news!
Thanks to a very generous contribution from the J.T.
and Margaret Talkington Charitable Foundation,
we are expanding our facility which will enable us
to serve more people over time. Please come to our
official Ground Breaking Ceremony on May 5th at

letters from
the heart
a note from the Executive Director, Lisa Gilliland
“Those who can, do. Those who can do more, volunteer.” – Author unknown
Volunteers are truly a special type of people. They often think of others before themselves. They
feel the need to help those less fortunate and make their communities a better place to live.
These characteristics are definitely true regarding the Lubbock Meals on Wheels volunteers.
They often face many challenges in their volunteer duties – be it a hard to find address, road
construction, horrible weather conditions, extra items to deliver, changes to their route, or the
loss of their favorite client. Somehow they not only manage, but manage with a smile on their face, a positive attitude,
and unwavering dedication to the mission. They face many obstacles delivering meals, and soon they will be facing
one just getting into our office. Construction for our facility expansion and renovation is gearing up. Soon our already
cramped parking lot will be filled with bulldozers, backhoes, and various building materials – enough to frustrate even
the most patient of volunteers. In preparation for this challenge, we have staggered the meal pick up times in hopes
of relieving some of the congestion in the lot and office. As always, our volunteers have stepped up and cooperated
with the changes. Our volunteers, along with our staff and board members, realize that although the construction
will complicate our procedures and create difficulties along the way; the outcome will allow us to serve more people
making all the hassle worthwhile in the end. We are all very excited about this dream becoming a reality. We thank
all of our volunteers in advance for the upcoming challenges we will face. We know with the support and patience of
our dedicated volunteers, we will all get through it together and end up with a facility that can serve our homebound,
elderly, and disabled community well into the future. We plan to keep everyone posted on our progress so sit back and
watch us grow!
Thanks to the Lubbock Lions Club, LCU Social Work Department, and Friends of the Wolfforth Library for
their generous support. We appreciate the many caring donations we receive each month. Due to space limitations, we
are not able to list all of them.
(Just a few of the notes
from our recipients)
“I want to thank you for all the extra
gifts and food I received during the
holidays, especially the cards for my
birthday (97th one).”
Sincerely, E.N.
“The meals are delicious and I
appreciate them so much. God bless
the ones who prepare the meals and
the nice people that deliver them.”
Sincerely, H.L.
“I enjoy my meals & friendly people.
Thank you, D.H.
“Will you please let your volunteers
know that I highly appreciate them for
taking time out of their days to bring
me my lunch. C.L.

Those of you that know us at Lubbock Meals on Wheels know that
we are obsessed with our 4-legged friends. If you are anything
like we are, you can’t imagine having to decide whether or not
you can care for your pet. LMOW has a Pet Program to try to
make sure that our recipients are able to care for their furry
friends and keep them at home with them. Currently 86 cats
and 132 dogs benefit from the Pet Program. Dry dog and cat
food is sent out to these four-legged companions every other
week (over 1,400 pounds per month currently). Occasionally
we help with vaccines and minor medical issues as well. We
appreciate all of the donations that support this very special
program.
A big thanks to the following for their help with this program

Laissez Les Bons Temps Rouler!
Lubbock Meals on Wheels’ Mardi Gras 2016 on March 1st was super great, thanks to the
hard work of many staff and volunteers! This year we raised over $95,000 (topping last year’s
proceeds). It was an election night and our attendance was down slightly from last year with
over 1,200 participants. Thirty-eight restaurants featured their food along with live music,
a variety of entertainment, a large silent auction, the children’s area, a Mardi Gras themed ice
sculpture, and the very cool Kristin + Camera Photo Booth. The Mardi Gras King and Queen
(Ron Roberts and Rachel Spangenthal) reigned over the event in full Mardi Gras regalia. Next
year’s LMOW Mardi Gras will be held at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center on February
28th, 2017, the same date as the true Fat Tuesday. SAVE THE DATE NOW!!! Sincere thanks to

Staff Spotlight
DeAnn Britton
In general, our staff like to stay out of the spotlight, but we’ve been asked
several times to share some info about ourselves. We will feature several staff in
each newsletter until we’ve told you about all of us. Staff are being presented in
order of longevity with LMOW. Please meet DeAnn and Jennifer.
Jennifer Morton
Name, Age, and Occupation: DeAnn Britton,
old enough to have been married 50 years,
Special Events Coordinator.
Start Date: November 7, 2007
How did you get involved with LMOW? I got
involved with LMOW when I applied to work
here in 2007. I plan to deliver whenever I retire.
Do you have any kids and/or pets? Charles and I have two sons,
Britt and Bradley. We have no pets at this time.
What is your favorite thing about being a nonprofit professional?
The answer to that would have to be helping people who really need
our services.
Who do you find inspirational? It would have to be my husband,
Charles, who is so patient, kind, gentle, and loving.
You are a new addition to a crayon box. What color are you and
why? I would be a “rainbow” crayon because of all that rainbows
represent.
What can you simply not resist? I just can’t resist glazed donuts.
Which super power would you like to have and why? I would like
to be able to heal people because there are so many who are so limited
because of health conditions.
What would I find in your refrigerator right now? You would find
milk, cheese, butter, tea, biscuits, water, and leftovers.
What is your middle name? My parents didn’t give me one.
What is the number one dish that you absolutely won’t eat? Brains!
Name, Age, and Occupation: Jennifer Morton, 57,
Administrative Assistant
Start Date: January 7, 2013
How did you get involved with LMOW? I was a volunteer and
one of the staff members was ill, so I filled in for her. She was
not able to come back, so I went from part-time to full-time.
Do you have any kids and/or pets? I have one son, Heath, and
two grandchildren, Rebekalyn & Patric. I also have one dog, Whiskers, who is so bad
that I call him Cujo.
What is your favorite thing about being a nonprofit professional?
Talking to the recipients. You get to know them from talking to them on the phone
and you develop a special bond with them.
Who do you find inspirational? A lady that I used to work with at AT&T. She was
very kind to everyone and being around her just made you want to be a better person.
You are a new addition to a crayon box. What color are you and why? I would
be Magenta. I am usually very laid back and I love to laugh. I am a very emotional
person, though sometimes I wish that I wasn’t
What can you simply not resist? Daydreaming, it is my favorite past time.
Which superpower would you like to have and why? I would like to be able to have
the power to stop hatred and prejudice of any kind. You would think that we would
be able to see past our differences and find a way to accept one another for a mutually
beneficial and peaceful place to live.
What would I find in your refrigerator right now? A lot of pickles.
What is your middle name? Corrine
What is the number one dish that you absolutely won’t eat? Brussels Sprouts and

The pecan is heart healthy and
contains antioxidants, 19 vitamins
and minerals and healthy fat.
One of the mineral components
is zinc, which is important in
producing testosterone in both
males and females. Pecan trees
only produce nuts every two
years. So get nutty and stock up
now at Lubbock Meals on Wheels!
$9.00/pound for locally grown
halves and pieces all year around!

Bring your aluminum cans to Lubbock Meals on
Wheels! Regular trips are made to recycle these
materials, and the money received provides funds for
our programs. You can help the environment and
Lubbock Meals on Wheels by bringing your aluminum
cans to 2304-34th Street during office hours, Monday –
Friday, 8a.m.-4:30p.m.
Mission Statement
RESPECTING THE DIGNITY OF EVERY HUMAN BEING, NO MATTER THEIR NEED OR PHYSICAL
CONDITION, LUBBOCK MEALS ON WHEELS WILL PROVIDE NUTRITIOUS, HOME-DELIVERED MEALS
TO THOSE WHO ARE HOMEBOUND, ELDERLY, OR DISABLED. WE SHALL SEEK TO BREAK THE
SOCIAL ISOLATION EXPERIENCED BY THE HOMEBOUND, BY PROVIDING WARM, CARING, FRIENDLY
CONTACT THROUGH OUR VOLUNTEERS.
Quiche... It’s what’s for... Mother’s Day
LMOW has an answer to that age old question, “What’s for
dinner?” Monday – Friday from 8:00am – 4:30pm you can
come by our office and pick up a house made quiche for your
evening meal. It goes straight from the freezer to the oven.
We have seven varieties to choose from: Green Chili Chicken
(our newest one), Chicken & Broccoli, Ham & Cheese,
Italian Sausage, Spinach & Bacon, Spinach & Mushroom
(vegetarian), and Mexicana (vegetarian). Quiches are $14.50
for one/two for $28.00. With your “frequent quiche card”
you buy 10 and get one free!
