Lunches and Volunteers
and Maps Oh My!
Lubbock Meals on Wheels is fortunate to have the help of over 1100 dedicated
volunteers to carry out our mission of delivering hot nutritious meals to the homebound elderly or disabled in our community. This task is not always as easy as it
sounds considering volunteers get to navigate through unfamiliar territory, deliver
lunches in all kinds of weather, and never know for sure what challenges they may
encounter. When volunteers return from their routes, we often hear of their many
adventures! Forty-seven of these brave explorers are needed daily to make sure all
the meals get delivered around town and beyond. They use their own vehicles,
gasoline, and time on these journeys of care and compassion. We provide the
meals, the maps, and the encouragement but without the help of our volunteers,
our mission would never get completed.
National Volunteer Appreciation Week is April 21-27,
and Lubbock Meals on Wheels will show our appreciation
for our many volunteers at our Annual Volunteer Appreciation
Reception. The event, with a safari jungle theme, will be held at
6:00p.m. Friday, April 26th, at Indiana Avenue Baptist Church,
9507 Indiana Avenue. Volunteers will be treated to a salad bar
dinner and a delicious dessert; many will receive various personalized
awards for their years of service.
Volunteer Spotlight
This special article will feature two couples that are part of Lubbock Meals on Wheels’ top
15 volunteers (based on number of service hours) and will include photos and information
about their volunteer service in their own words. We hope you will enjoy reading about
some of our many dedicated volunteers and perhaps their stories will inspire you to volunteer as well!

Volunteer Duties: deliver meals (together 4 days
each week)
Why did you decide to volunteer? After retiring we
felt like we wanted to help others. God has
been so good to us, and we wanted to give
back. It’s a blessing to us.
Volunteer Duties: delivering meals (together
and individually – total of 4 routes per
week) and packaging emergency meals
Most memorable volunteer experience: We met a
of one in particular but can tell you that we
both really look forward to our Meals on
Wheels’ delivery days
Why do you think your volunteer work is important?
What do you want people to know about Lubbock Meals
on Wheels? There are people who really need
help. It only takes about an hour. It is
such a blessing to us. Our Lord wants us
to help others.

a very good use of our time after retiring.
Why do you continue to volunteer? We enjoy the
many relationships that have been forged
with MOW employees and with the many
clients we have served over the years.
Some people are alone. They haven’t family
or a car to get out of the house. They are
sitting waiting to see you. They tell us the
human contact means so much. It makes
them feel human. Something to look forward to - some need a hug.
Lubbock Meals on Wheels would like
to remember the many volunteers who
passed away in the past year. Our
sympathies go to their families and
friends. These special people will be
greatly missed by all who knew them.

passed away. He did not cook so we have
tried to be a friend to him. He loves our

Joan – November 1997
In Loving Memory
Most memorable volunteer experience: Can’t think
upcoming events
Why do you think your volunteer work is important?
Provides mutual satisfaction to both the
server and the recipient. For many recipients this may be the only significant
social contact of the day. For the Meals
on Wheel’s volunteer, this service is a very
rewarding social ministry experience. It is a
win-win situation. Both Joan and I feel the
rewards gained by us are very meaningful.
What do you want people to know about Lubbock
Meals on Wheels? Provides Meals on Wheels’
recipients with one nutritious meal per day
- many of whom do not have access to even
one good wholesome meal per day. Meals
on Wheels is not funded by any government agency and therefore funding must
come from Meals on Wheels’ fundraisers
and individual donations. Overhead costs
compared to total expended is quite low.

Big Wheels Deliver Meals
Promotion
Due to road construction on 34th
Street this event may be postponed
until September – more information
to follow
a note from the executive director
We are under construction on 34th Street amidst big
trucks, graders, and lots of dust! Parking has been a
little hectic with our drivers needing to park between
our building and the laundry and then going east or west
down the alley! This project is ongoing for the next 90
days or more.
Also, this is the end of the month of March, and the
first quarter of the year is coming to an end. The cost of
both food and gas has varied, and our supporters have still
managed to find a place for LMOW in their budgets. We
are so appreciative of this community support.
Mardi Gras was a tremendous success; the crowd just
continued to grow throughout the night. The Lubbock
Meals on Wheels’ board, staff, and I want to personally
thank all those who sponsored and attended this fundraiser.
Lubbock Meals on Wheels is not government funded nor are we a United Way agency.
We own our building with a commercial kitchen onsite. We are funded by the donations from people, various organizations, clubs, grants, and foundations. There are 12
employees and over 1100 active volunteers. Several years ago we started making our
own quiche, and we now have 5 varieties made onsite that are fresh frozen and for sale
Monday-Friday from 8-4:30.
Also, we have a Pet Program and feed the dogs and cats of our most vulnerable clients
so they don’t share their meals with their furry friends. Recipient’s birthdays are always
recognized with a card and a miniature cake.
Lubbock Meals on Wheels is “More than a Meal,” and I encourage you to get involved
and make a difference in our community. Please stop by our facility at 2304-34th Street
or call 792-7971.
Thank you so much for my meals. The
people are so good.
-Jean
Thank you from my heart to the office staff
and the chefs in the kitchen and all the
volunteers that make the Meals on Wheels’
service possible.
-Lois
Thank you very much for the food. Your
generosity is deeply appreciated.
Sincerely, Vivian
Thanks for my meals and the ones who
bring them.
-Margaret
Thanks to all for your great service. I am so
grateful!

Many dogs and cats are still benefitting from the Pet Food Program. Dry dog
and cat food is sent out to these four-legged companions every other Tuesday.
Recently, this program has grown dramatically and now feeds 208 pets. We are in
constant need of donations of dry dog food and cat food now more than ever as our supplies are running out much more quickly.

The Fish was Fryin’ Before the Dust Started Flyin’
The Annie’s Chat & Chew event was held at the Mae Simmons Senior Center on Saturday, March 23,
from 11a.m.-1p.m. Fortunately the massive dust storm took its time getting here, and the event was
complete before the skies turned brown. This fundraiser was started over twenty years ago by long-time
volunteer Annie Sanders and continued as a memorial once again this year. Guests enjoyed plenty of
great food (especially the fried catfish), visiting with friends, and remembering Annie Sanders, a very
generous woman and respected community leader. Donations were accepted at the door and raised
$1,320.00 to help fund the purchase of meals for the homebound community served by Lubbock Meals
on Wheels. Thank you to Betty Domingo and Pam Sanders and all of their helpers who worked so hard
to make this event a success. Thank you also to all the guests who supported this very special luncheon.

Lubbock Avalanche Journal continues to provide 210 newspapers per day (Monday
– Friday) to be distributed free of charge to clients in Lubbock and Idalou. AJ Readers are generously sponsoring this special project. Lubbock Meals on Wheels is very
excited to continue this partnership and looks forward to providing yet another “extra”
to our meal recipients.
The Show
Must Go On!
Lubbock Meals on Wheels held the fourteenth annual Mardi Gras
fundraiser on February 26. The blizzard the day before made for some
tense moments but despite the weather, the show went on and was very
successful raising over $70,000. The guests were treated to delicious
food from 34 local restaurants, live jazz music by the Shinn Turner Dixieland Band, a large silent auction, a sparkling fleur de lis ice sculpture, big wig photo area, and
various entertainers including dancers, clowns, and singers. Younger guests had a great time on
the inflatable bouncers or having their hair and faces painted in the children’s activity area. The
crowd, adorned in festive beads and masks, was greeted by the Mardi Gras King and Queen
(Evan Onstot of KLBK and Julie Musgrave of KAMC) who reigned over the evening in regal
attire. No one could miss Mr. Mardi Gras (David Postar) who towered over the crowd on stilts
and Ms. Mardi Gras (Nikki-Dee Ray) who donned a beautiful pink and black authentic Mardi
Gras gown. Plans are already underway for Mardi Gras 2014 in the Civic Center Exhibit Hall.

a Great Cause
Thanks to our good friends at Dickey’s Barbecue Pit for hosting
two “dine and donate” events - one in January and another April 9
- to benefit Lubbock Meals on Wheels. Guests just had to mention
Lubbock Meals on Wheels, and 20% of their ticket was donated to
our agency. What a perfect combination: enjoying a delicious meal
and helping Lubbock Meals on Wheels at the same time!
