The Rotunda was erected in 1860. Surmounting this monumental
fountain are three statues representing Justice (facing Aix-en-Provence),
Agriculture (facing Marseille), and the Arts (facing Avignon).

LE COURS MIRABEAU
The Cours Mirabeau, once a street for horse-drawn coaches, created in
1649, links the Mazarin quarter to the south with the old commercial town
to the north. This main thoroughfare is lined with plane trees, fountains, cafés and elegant mansions (hôtels particuliers) from the 17th and
18th centuries. Among them you will find No.4, Hôtel de Villars (1710),
No.10, Hôtel Isoard de Vauvenargues (1710), No.19, Hôtel d’ArbaudJouques (1730), and No.20, Hôtel Forbin (1656), with a superb Italian
facade. At the far end of the Cours is the magnificent Hôtel du Poët (1730).

(The Nine Canons Fountain - 1691)

LA fOnTAInE D’EAU ChAUDE
(The Hot Water Fountain), the “mossy fountain” (1734), fed by the hot spring.

LA fOnTAInE DU ROI REnÉ (1819)
is the work of David of Angers. The statue shows the King with a bunch of grapes
in his hand; he was the one who brought the famous Muscat grape to Provence.

LE PASSAGE AGARD
A former Carmelite convent, which links the Cours Mirabeau to the Law
Courts (Palais de Justice).
Don’t miss the ‘Deux Garçons’ café, formerly frequented by Cézanne
and his friends, or the Oblats chapel, once the chapel of the Carmelite
convent.

LE MAUSOLÉE JOSEPh SEC (1792)
(Joseph Sec mausoleum - 1792) stands on the Avenue Pasteur. One of
the rare monuments of architecture dating from the French Revolution.

L’ATELIER CÉZAnnE
(Cézanne’s studio), a cottage in a garden, purchased by the painter in
1901. Now a museum, it displays the furniture and the objects used by
the artist in his still-life paintings.

LE PAvILLOn DE vEnDÔME (1665)
with a splendid formal French garden in front, was built by Pierre
Pavillon for the Duke of Vendôme. The two stone telamons (male figures)
adorning the facade are a masterpiece by Rambot. The pavilion-museum
houses furniture and paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries.

L’OPPIDUM CELTO-LIGURE
D’EnTREMOnT
(Entremont Celto-Ligurian Oppidum) situated 3 km to the North of the
old town, in the direction of Puyricard. The capital of Salyens, stormed
by Sextius in 123 BC, lay on this escarpment (370m). Excavations have
uncovered remains of ramparts, shops, warehouses and workshops laid
out along a rectangular street pattern, as well as some fine statues on
exhibition at the Granet Museum (additional tour to the site).

CITÉ DU LIvRE, PAvILLOn nOIR,
GRAnD ThÉÂTRE DE PROvEnCE
The Cité du Livre holds the Méjanes Library, the Saint-John Perse
Foundation, facilities for exhibitions, conferences and shows and a
video library of lyrical arts. This cultural centre was completed in 2007
by the addition of the Pavillon Noir, built by Rudy Ricciotti for Ballet
Preljocaj and the Grand Théâtre de Provence built by Vittorio Gregotti
and Paolo Colao.

LA fOnDATIOn vASARELy
(The Vasarely Foundation) was established in 1975 to promote art
and architecture. The building is a work of art in itself. Inside, the 42
monumental works of Victor Vasarely and prestigious exhibitions are
on display all year round.

L’AnCIEnnE hALLE AUx GRAInS
The former Corn Exchange (1759-61) stands on the south side of the square and
is topped by an allegorical pediment by Chastel, which represents the Rhone and
the Durance rivers. The fountain, also by Chastel, is topped with a Roman column.
As you walk around the Corn Exchange, you will see Place Richelme, where a
fresh fruit and vegetable market is held every morning.

This quarter with streets in a chequered pattern was designed
in the 17th century by the Archbishop Mazarin and gradually
became the chosen home of the aristocracy of Aix.

L’hÔTEL DE CAUMOnT (1715-1742)
On rue Joseph Cabassol, now houses the Darius Milhaud Music Conservatory.

PLACE DES qUATRE DAUPhInS
The graceful Four Dolphins fountain was built by Rambot in 1667, and
the Hôtel de Boisgelin (1650), its facade adorned with a heavy Doric frieze,
is the work of Pavillon and Rambot.

LE MUSÉE PAUL ARBAUD
The Paul Arbaud Museum, installed in the Hôtel d’Arbaud (late 18th century)
houses an outstanding collection of Provençal pottery.

L’ÉGLISE ST-JEAn DE MALTE
The Church of St Jean of Malta, a fortified Gothic church, was built at the
end of the 12th century. This chapel of the old priory of the Knights of Malta
formerly contained the tombs of the Counts of Provence.

LE MUSÉE GRAnET
The Granet Museum, situated in the former Priory of Knights of Malta is
named after the Provençal painter Granet (1775-1849) who was its main
donor. Its exhibits include vestiges of Roman Aix and works by Cézanne.

LE PALAIS DE JUSTICE
The Law Courts built on the site of the former Palace of the Sovereign
Counts. In the 16th century, it housed the Parliament, the Court of the
Auditors, the Treasury and the Cabinet. After it was demolished at the end
of the 18th century, it was rebuilt according to plans by Ledoux. It was
completed in 1832 by Penchaud. (A flea and antiques market is held in the
Square 3 times a week)

L’ÉGLISE DE LA MADELEInE
(Madeleine Church): this 17th century building houses a number of religious
paintings such as the Altarpiece of the Annunciation (1444).

LE MUSÉE DU vIEIL AIx
(Museum of Old Aix) At 17 rue Gaston de Saporta in the Hôtel d’Estienne de
St Jean, the Old Aix Museum was built by Vallon (1652-1724). It contains a
collection of objects from the town’s past. At No.19, the Hôtel de Chateaurenard
(1654) contains a superb staircase painted in trompe-l’oeil by Daret.

L’hÔTEL MAynIER D’OPPÈDE (1787)
At No.23, it is now the Institute of French Studies for foreign students.
Its inner courtyard is used for classical music concerts.

LA PLACE DE L’ARChEvÊChÉ
The Archbishop’s Palace (1650-1730), at the far end of the square, is the
former residence of the Archbishops of Aix. It is decorated with an elegant
Regency door. The International Festival of Lyric Art is held here every July.

LE MUSÉE DES TAPISSERIES
located on the first floor of the Palace in the state apartments, houses a
rich collection of tapestries and furniture from the 17th and 18th centuries.

LA CAThÉDRALE ST-SAUvEUR
St Sauveur Cathedral provides examples of every architectural style
from the 5th to the 17th century, from its Roman foundations to the
Merovingian baptistery, from the 12th century cloister to the famous Triptych
of the ‘Burning Bush’ by Nicolas Froment (1476). It also has carved
wooden doors from the 16th century. Opposite the Cathedral is the Place
de l’Université, where the old Law Faculty was replaced by the Institute
of Political Studies, built by Georges Vallon (1734).

LA PLACE DES CARDEURS
Opened in 1963 on the site of an insalubrious plot, this was the Jewish
quarter in the Middle Ages.
It is now dotted with restaurants and cafés.
LES REMPARTS MÉDIÉvAUx
(Medieval ramparts) The last remaining vestiges of the medieval ramparts
are situated at the very top of the rue Jacques de la Roque, on the left.

LES ThERMES SExTIUS
The thermal spas are next to the Tourreluque Tower (14th century).
The present building stands on the site of the Roman baths of Sextius.
Excavations have revealed a Roman thermal bath, which you can see
as you enter the new spa complex.

MUSÉUM D’hISTOIRE nATURELLE
The Natural History Museum, inside the Hôtel Boyer d’Eguilles (1672), houses a unique collection of dinosaur fossils from Sainte-Victoire Mountain.

LA PLACE D’ALBERTAS
A blend of Baroque and Rococo styles, it was designed by Georges Vallon
around 1745 for the Marquis of Albertas. At 13 rue Aude, you will see the
flamboyant embossed pattern on the doors of the Hôtel de Peyronetti (1620).
LA PLACE DE LA MAIRIE
The square is dominated by the Town Hall (1655-1670), featuring a fine
facade in the Italian style, carved wooden doors and an inner court.
The Clock Tower, once the town belfry has an astronomical clock (1661),
on which statues representing the four seasons appear in turn.

L’ÉGLISE DU SAInT-ESPRIT
(1705-1716) the former chapel of the St-Esprit Hospital is where Mirabeau
and Emilie de Marignane were married. Directly opposite is the Augustine
bell tower with a fine wrought-iron belfry dating from 1677.

This coastline, which is still protected from
the summer crowds, has managed to retain
its wild appearance in many spots. Stop near
the Marine Reserve and short walk along the
coastline where the Gaulish villages used to
be. Continuation towards Sausset-les-Pins
and Carry-le-Rouet (Stop, optional bathing).
Gripping descent through beautiful wild surroundings towards the typical Calanque de
Niolon, a former fishing village (stop), where
the unrestricted views over the Bay of
Marseille and the light will lead you to share
the love that the painters (Cézanne, Braque….)
had for L’Estaque, stop, ascent to Place de
l’église, to a house rented by Cézanne). Return

The Tuilerie des Milles was the only camp in France used for internment, transit and deportation. Things
to see: outside view of the Tuilerie (tile factory), an imposing red-brick structure, unchanged to the present day. Unaccompanied visit, Mon to Fri 09:00-12:00 and 12:45-17:00 except public holidays. In this
former refectory of the camp guards, murals painted by interned artists recall that many members of the
German and Austrian intelligentsia were interned here. The deportees’ path leads to a commemorative
pillar and a train carriage dating back to that period: thousands of Jews were deported from here to
Auschwitz via Drancy. The Memorial Carriage Association offers guided tours of the Site and access to
an exhibition on deportation inside the train carriage.

Following the international success of the Cézanne in Provence exhibition
and the complete renovation of the museum, come and see the new layout
of the collections in the 4500 m2 of space: the French, Flemish, Dutch and

Centred on Cézanne’s cottage, an itinerary has been created in the shade
of the huge pine trees to show you the motifs painted by Cézanne:
the famous red rocks, the geology of the plateau and the working of the
quarries whose stone was used to build the monuments of Aix from ancient
times until the 18th century. Cézanne painted 11 oils and 16 watercolours
in this landscape of minerals and plant life.

3 Jas de Bouffan
The Jas de Bouffan house was purchased in 1859 by Cézanne’s father and
owned by the family until 1899. For 40 years, Paul Cézanne’s main motifs of
inspiration were found here. He painted the first great works of his youth
directly on the walls of the large drawing room on the ground floor, and then
set up his easel in the grounds, in front of the house, the farm, the pond and
the avenue of chestnut trees, producing no less than 36 oil paintings and
17 watercolours showing his family home and surroundings.

4 Cézanne’s Studio

For times, see museum column.
On 1 September 1902 Cézanne set up his main studio in the country. He
worked there every day for the last four years of his life. As all Cézanne’s
admirers know, it is here that the painter’s presence is felt most intensely.
Dozens of paintings, including his last ‘Large Bathers’, were painted in this
studio of light and silence.
