For the best view, head out to the Turnaround. As the storm rolls in, watch the surf and sky dramatically transform. Then close your eyes and extend your arms to the heavens. Feel the wind whip around you and the rain pound down as nature unleashes the awesome power of her winter fury! 7KHQJRÀQGDFR]\FRIIHHVKRSDQGZDUPXS seasideOR.com CXSP16.indd 5 3/7/16 5:07 PM Gary Hayes BIG PICTURE 6 COAST EXPLORER Spring 2016 CXSP16.indd 6 3/7/16 5:07 PM MOMENTOUS N MOMENTS o matter how many times I travel along these 363 miles, the Oregon Coast continues to amaze me. Although it's always a different experience from day to day and season to season, it never fails to provide a "wow." One of my favorite stops on the South Oregon Coast is Cape Arago, a required side trip off Highway 101 for any traveler, in my opinion. It's a drive of less than a half-hour from downtown Coos Bay or North Bend to reach a remarkable string of three State Parks along this spectacular cape. You start with a scenic view of Sunset Bay, a protected cove and beach with rocky reefs and islands guarding its mouth. As you continue, views of the Cape Arago Lighthouse emerge before you reach Shore Acres State Park and one of the most amazing viewpoints in Oregon. It's known for great wave action year-round, but when storms whip up huge swells, there's no other place like it. The reefs and cliff sides turn incoming waves into explosions that resemble fi reworks, then water cascades like a waterfall down richly textured rock formations. I'm always entranced by this constantly changing scene, making it difficult for me to leave as I convince myself to stay for "just one more wave." On this visit, the sun broke out for a few minutes between showers and rainbows appeared and dissolved with each momentous crash. Nearby, Simpson Reef is usually active with sea lions whose bellowing echoes throughout the area. Finally, Cape Arago State Park denotes the end of the road with expansive views and access to colorful intertidal areas. Hike the length of this stunning cape in spring and you're likely to enjoy wildflower-dotted trails and catch glimpses of seals nursing their newborns. Although Cape Arago is exceptional, it's not an exception. The momentous Oregon Coast has many surprises in store for your next visit. Rainforest-covered headlands reach miles into the sea, the result of millions of years-old lava flows and erosion carving a landscape like no other on the planet. The largest expanse of coastal sand dunes in North America stretches out along 40 miles of coast to provide sightseers and hikers an other-worldly landscape to discover and ATV enthusiasts a playground of epic proportion. Incredible displays of wildlife include some of the world's best birdwatching, seals and sea lions basking on rocky shores, Gray Whales that migrate along the coast by the tens of thousands and Roosevelt Elk grazing in large herds through meadows. Travelers discover unique towns ranging from the Northwest's first US settlement in Astoria to cities that grew from logging and fishing pasts and some of the most beautiful beach resort towns anywhere. How do you choose from 363 miles of spectacular? This guide to the Oregon Coast will help you decide. coastexplorermagazine.com 9 CXSP16.indd 9 3/7/16 5:07 PM C O A S T L INE S THE NORTH OREGON COAST S Some of the Oregon Coast's great scenic viewpoints, lush rainforest hiking trails, historical attractions and quaint coastal communities can be discovered on Oregon's North Coast. Visitors can explore Astoria, the oldest US settlement west of the Rockies; Seaside, Oregon's first beach resort town and very possibly the Northwest's favorite family destination; Cannon Beach, a scenic wonderland and renowned art town; and at least a dozen other small towns on the edges of scenic beaches, rivers and bays. Beautiful natural areas like Ecola State Park, Cape Meares, Oswald West State Park and Cape Lookout offer stunning sights and scenic hikes. You can visit a more than 100-year-old shipwreck at Fort Stevens State Park, walk Seaside's historic oceanfront promenade and explore tidepools at Oregon's iconic Haystack Rock. The region also offers one of the best side trips off scenic Highway 101, the Three Capes Scenic Route. 10 COAST EXPLORER Spring 2016 CXSP16.indd 10 3/7/16 5:07 PM Crescent Beach, Ecola State Park CXSP16.indd 11 3/7/16 4:01 PM C O A S T L INE S 6.5 12 COAST EXPLORER Spring 2016 CXSP16.indd 12 3/7/16 4:01 PM THE NORTH OREGON COAST TOP STOPS Top attractions (north to south) CANNON BEACH Treasure Co ASTORIA Astoria, the oldest US settlement west of the Rocky Mountains, was the first commercial hub of the West Coast due to its strategic position near the mouth of the Columbia River. Today, a riverfront walk offers views of the river, now busy with cargo ships, rather than the sailing ships of the earliest international traders. A restored trolley also traverses the river front, passing working waterfront buildings and old cannery piers intermixed with hotels, pubs and restaurants. The Columbia River Maritime Museum is a top attraction on the riverfront. Victorian homes climb the hillside of Astoria and the top of town is crowned with the Astoria Column, a lighthouselike structure built in the 1920s offering panoramic views of the entire region. FORT STEVENS STATE PARK US 101 Milepost 6.5 Fort Stevens State Park stretches from the south jetty of the Columbia River south along a sandy beach where you can still see the remains of a shipwreck from over 100 years ago. DEPOE BAY The small town of Depoe Bay is known as the Whale Watching Capital of the Oregon Coast. The nearby waters are frequented by Gray Whales that linger much of the year in the area rather than migrating north with most of the whale population. Oregon State Parks operates the Whale Watching Center at the south end of the seawall. When tides are right, “spouting horns” below the seawall put on a show as surging waves are forced through small openings in the lava beds shooting water like geysers up to 60 feet in the air. North of the lighthouse sits the former Coast Guard barracks and offices, now housing historical exhibits. The loop road also passes a campground and day use picnic area at Lake Marie with a one-mile nature trail circling the lake. NORTH BEND / COOS BAY The cities of North Bend and Coos Bay sit side-by-side south of the bay that wraps around the two. Coos Bay is the Oregon Coast's largest city and is an active port in a region busy with ship traffic, commercial and recreational fishing, crabbing and clamming. The communities are the gateway to the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area for northbound travelers and to the spectacular coastline and State Parks on Cape Arago, one of the top side trips off US 101. The Conde B. McCullough Memorial Bridge that crosses Coos Bay as you enter North Bend from the north is the largest of the designer’s five classic bridges built in 1936, stretching 5,305 feet and offering expansive views of the bay and ship traffic on the busy waterway to pedestrians. Dune buggy tours and ATV rentals are available just north of town. North Bend is home to Mill Casino and Coos Bay boasts the notable Coos Art Museum, the Coos History Museum and the Oregon Coast Historical Railway Museum on the waterfront. Other attractions along the route include the picturesque small fishing town of Charleston offering charter fishing and crabbing. The main attractions are the three State Parks on Cape Arago: Sunset Bay, Shore Acres and Cape Arago State Parks. Hiking trails connect the three State Parks offering views of cliff side, coves and the Cape Arago Lighthouse. Sunset Bay features a scenic cove beach framed by dramatic sea cliffs with beach access, picnic areas and a campground. The sheer sandstone cliffs at Shore Acres make for dramatic views of crashing surf from viewpoints, paved walkways and hiking trails. The park is the former estate of pioneer timber baron Louis Simpson and the estate's formal gardens are maintained and are open to visitors. Cape Arago State Park is located at the end of the cape with scenic viewpoints, picnic areas, pathways and access to beach and stunning intertidal areas. Viewpoints offer observation of seals and sea lions on Simpson Reef and Shell Island. BANDON The beach at Bandon offers other worldly views of rock formations and small islands along the scenic shoreline adjacent to this beach town. Beach Loop Drive offers viewpoints and beach access, most notably the Face Rock Viewpoint and Coquille Point. The rocky shore makes this a great place for exploring tide pools and bird watching. A charming Old Town area is adjacent to Bandon’s riverfront boardwalk and public dock, popular with recreational crabbers. A short trip north of Bandon offers access to the Coquille River Lighthouse in Bullards Beach State Park. About seven miles south of Bandon is West Coast Game Park Safari, a petting zoo with live exotic animal exhibits and shows. CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF ART IN COOS BAY F or the past five decades, Coos Art Museum has exhibited outstanding artwork from artists throughout the Northwest. This public art museum is the cornerstone of visual arts on Oregon’s South Coast and one of Oregon’s cultural gems. It is the third oldest art museum in Oregon, tracing its roots to Coos Artist League, active since 1950. Located in a historic art deco building, CAM has six galleries of displays and a 570-piece and growing permanent collection of mid-20th century and contemporary American art. This spring, CAM hosts its annual exhibit of paintings by artists residing in western states. Expressions West opens on Friday, April 22 with a reception and awards ceremony from 5-7pm. The exhibition will be on display until June 25. The Park features a campground and over eight miles of hiking trails along the headland, through forests and to surrounding beaches. PORT ORFORD The attractions of this small fishing community include Port Orford Heads State Park with short hiking trails extending along the headland from the Port Orford Lifeboat Station, a Coast Guard facility built in 1934 now serving as a museum. Battle Rock Park offers beach access and interpretive signs about historic Battle Rock at the edge of the shoreline. GOLD BEACH It was the gold rush that originally attracted fortune hunters to Gold Beach, but today the riches include the wild and scenic Rogue River, miles of sandy beach and nearby access to some of the coast’s most beautiful natural areas. Among the top attractions is Jerry’s Rogue Jets offering scenic jet boat tours up the Rogue River revealing wildlife and some whitewater thrills. Fishing charters and guided river fishing trips are popular activities and nearby hiking and sightseeing options include a trail to Oregon’s largest Myrtle Tree, the Francis Schrader Old Growth Trail and some of the most scenic sections of the coast along the Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor just 20 miles south. SAMUEL H. BOARDMAN STATE SCENIC CORRIDOR Southbound: US 101 Milepost 343; Northbound US 101 Milepost 353.8 This 12-mile stretch of coast offers easy stops at stunning scenic viewpoints, access to beaches and tide pool areas and hiking trails including one of the most beautiful stretches of the Oregon Coast Trail. You can spend a day or a lifetime enjoying the views and trails. Some of the top stops include (north to south) the Arch Rock Viewpoint, Natural Bridges Cove Viewpoint, Whaleshead Beach State Park, House Rock Viewpoint, Cape Ferrelo Viewpoint, Lone Ranch State Park and Rainbow Rock Viewpoint. HARRIS BEACH STATE PARK US 101 Milepost 355.7 Wide sandy beaches, rocky outcroppings and the Oregon Coast’s largest island just offshore make this a great place for bird and marine life watching or exploring tide pools. The intertidal area is protected as one of Oregon’s seven Marine Gardens. The park features a large campground and day use areas for beach access and picnicking. BROOKINGS-HARBOR The City of Brookings and its unincorporated neighbor, Harbor, offer visitors access to beach, river and port. Harris Beach State Park lies in the north end of Brookings and Harbor lies southwest along the lower Chetco River offering a full service marina. Just eight miles east of Brookings up the Chetco River, Alfred A. Loeb State Park offers access to a Myrtlewood forest and a one-mile hike to the largest stand of Redwoods in Oregon. Question: I am planning to drive the length of the Oregon Coast during the spring whale migration with my mom who is confined to a wheel chair. Can you recommend the best accessible viewpoints and whale watching areas? Answer: There are a number of wheel chair accessible areas that offer stunning views and many are great whale watching spots as well. From north to south, some of the stops you should consider would include the following: Seaside's Oceanfront Promenade: A popular and active paved promenade along Seaside's oceanfront. Ecola State Park: Paved paths offer a variety of panoramic views that are also good for whale watching. Oswald West State Park Highway Viewpoints: Several turnouts on US 101 as you skirt the edge of Neahkahnie Mountain are great whale watching viewpoints. Wayne Hoffman C O A S T L INE S Coquille Point in Bandon Cape Meares State Scenic Viewpoint: Paved paths lead to the end of the cape and a lighthouse, a great spot for whale watching. Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area: Paved paths offer great views and circle a scenic lighthouse. There's also a wheelchair accessible intertidal area at Quarry Cove. Seabirds, seals and whales are common sightings. Depoe Bay Whale Watch Center: This is a facility operated by Oregon State Parks that is one of the best whale watching locations year-round with both indoor and outdoor viewing areas. State Parks personnel are on hand to help visitors spot whales. Cape Perpetua Scenic Area: A variety of paved paths offer views from atop the cape and along a scenic stretch of 40 COAST EXPLORER Spring 2016 CXSP16.indd 40 3/7/16 4:06 PM The Oregon Coast offers an abundance of accessible viewpoints for sightseers and whale watchers. oceanfront at Cook's Chasm for views of Spouting Horn and Thor's Well. A nearby paved overlook offers views of Devil's Churn. The Visitor Center offers a good whale watching viewpoint. Heceta Head Lighthouse Highway Viewpoints: Just south of Sea Lion Caves are two small highway-side viewpoints that offer wonderfully scenic views of the beautiful Heceta Head Lighthouse. Oregon Dunes Day Use Area: Just south of Florence, this dunes overlook offers access to wheelchair accessible viewing areas of the Oregon Dunes. Wayne Hoffman Shore Acres State Park: A muststop with paved trails along a cliffside famous for great wave action, seals, sea lions and whales. The formal gardens of a one-time historic estate can also be toured. Nearby, the Simpson Reef overlook is one of the best places to watch seal lions on the entire Oregon Coast. Nearby Cape Arago State Park also offers paved paths and overlooks good for whale watching. Coquille Point in Bandon: A network of paved paths offers beautiful overlooks of the many rock formations along Bandon's scenic beach. The nearby Face Rock viewpoint offers more great views and a short paved pathway. Arch Rock & Spruce Islands Viewpoint: The Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor offers a few nice wheelchair accessible stops, but this is my favorite. A few paved paths (some a little rough) offer great views of a scenic stretch of coastline. Harris Beach State Park: Paved paths at the day use area of the park offers nice views of the rock strewn shoreline. This is my "short list" of don't miss accessible locations. There are many others. I would allocate 7-9 days to explore these areas and fi nd your own special places. Hundreds of volunteers will staff 26 sites along the coast to help visitors spot migrating Gray Whales during this statewide program. The Whale Watching Spoken Here program, coordinated by Oregon State Parks, coincides with what is typically the peak of the Gray Whale migration. The spring migration offers the best opportunity of the year to spot Gray Whales as they migrate north to food rich waters off Alaska. During the spring migration, whales typically make a more leisurely trip, taking time to feed and pass closer to the shore than on their migration south in winter. The northern migration can also stretch into early summer as stragglers, such as mothers with calves, travel slower along this route. Find more information on the Whale Watching Spoken Here program at oregonstateparks.org.
