congatec System Utility tool (CGUTIL).

Terminology

BIOS: Basic Input Output System. BIOS is actually firmware, the software that is
programmed into a ROM (Read-Only Memory) chip built onto the motherboard of a
computer
UEFI
Unified Extensible Firmware Interface
Flash
A special type of EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Read Only Memory) that can be erased
and reprogrammed in blocks instead of one byte at a time. Many modern PCs have their
BIOS stored on a flash memory chip so that it can easily be updated if necessary.
POST
Power-on Self Test. A diagnostic testing sequence run by a computer’s BIOS as the
computer’s power is initially turned on. The POST will determine if the computer’s RAM,
disk drives, peripheral devices and other hardware components are properly working.
CGUTIL
congatec System Utility. Universal tool for BIOS updates and BIOS modifications.
CGOS
congatec Operating System API. Software driver for the congatec Embedded Features.

Introduction
congatec embedded BIOSes offer the 'Quiet Boot' or 'Splash Screen' function for
systems that require that the BIOS POST messages not be displayed during the
module's boot process. If enabled in the BIOS Setup, the BIOS POST messages are
covered by a black picture. This picture, that is included by default in all congatec
BIOSes, can be replaced by a customized picture called an OEM BIOS Boot Logo.
It is not possible to insert a picture (JPEG or BMP file) directly into the BIOS. The
picture must first be converted to a 'BIOS Boot Logo' module.
The following sections will demonstrate examples of how to create and insert this OEM
'BIOS Boot Logo' module within the BIOS using the congatec System Utility (CGUTIL)
tool. The CGUTIL tool is compatible to all congatec CPU modules and available as a
Windows GUI (CGUTLGUI.exe) application and DOS command line (CGUTLCMD.exe)
application.
congatec BIOSes are based on three firmware solutions, AMI Aptio UEFI, AMIBIOS8
and Insyde XpressROM BIOS. The creation and insertion of the 'BIOS Boot Logo' is
slightly different between AMI and Insyde solutions. Section 2 of this document explains
the approach on AMI Aptio and AMIBIOS8 core based congatec BIOSes while section 3
will show the steps that are necessary when using modules based on the Insyde
XpressROM BIOS core.
1.1
Requirements
For detailed information about the congatec System Utility consult the CGUTIL User's
Guide. This can be found on the congatec web page.
The congatec System Utility requires a CGOS API driver that can also be found on the
congatec web page in the 'Cgos.zip' file at www.congatec.com. This driver is only
necessary if the Windows GUI version of the CGUTIL is used.
For congatec modules based on Insyde XpressROM BIOSes, there are additional files
required (bmpflip.exe, cprpad.exe, rle.exe, userlogo.bat) that can be found in the
'LX800_Bootlogo.zip' file on the congatec web page in the corresponding CPU module's
driver section.
Note
Consult the appropriate products user's guide to find out if the BIOS of the module that
you intend to customize is based on an AMI BIOS core or on an Insyde XpressROM
BIOS core.

Create and Add an OEM BIOS Boot Logo to
an AMI based BIOS/UEFI firmware
The following example shows how an OEM BIOS Boot Logo module can be created and
added to the BIOS when working directly on a congatec module (in this example a
conga-X915 with the appropriate BIOS ROM file 'P915R115.rom' is used).
In this example, the BIOS in the flash memory chip of the congatec CPU module is
modified directly. Another possibility is to download the current congatec standard BIOS
and work in 'ROM File' mode using a host system. When using this scenario, you will
have to flash the modified ROM file to the congatec CPU module on your target system
after you have performed step 10 in section 2.2.
2.1
'BIOS Boot Logo' Picture Requirements
The picture that can be used for the 'BIOS Boot Logo' must be a JPEG file with the
following features and limitations:
The boot logo can be displayed in VESA mode 112h, 111h, 110h (640x480), 115h,
114h, 113h (800x600), 118h, 117h, 116h (1024x768), 11Bh, 11Ah, 119h (1280x1024).
The video mode will be selected automatically depending on the image resolution. The
video BIOS, as well as the display device, should support the appropriate resolution
otherwise the result is unpredictable.
The following must be considered when a JPEG image is used as a boot logo:
• Extended sequential DCT is not supported.
• Define restart interval (DRI) is not supported.
• Progressive encoding is not supported.
• Lossless sequential encoding is not supported.
• Differential sequential DCT is not supported.
• Differential progressive DCT is not supported.
• The X-density/Y-density should be 1:1.
• YUV111 and YUV112 (color component 1:1:2 and 1:1:1) is supported.
• IPTC or EXIF information blocks (additional textual information such as
copyrights, date, time, ...) cannot be included.
JPEG files created with digital cameras or through the use of Adobe Photoshop use a
lot of these unsupported features and in particularly add the IPTC or EXIF information
block. Thus, a JPEG image that is to be used as a boot logo must always be checked
before being added to the BIOS.
The following tools may be used to generate or modify the JPEG file:
• IrfanView (Freeware)
• ACDSee 2.41 or 3.0
• PaintShop
It is recommended to use a logo with the same resolution as the native resolution of the
used display device. Especially when using LVDS flat panels.

2.2
Using the Windows GUI version of CGUTIL
The method described below is useful for evaluating and testing the OEM
customization feature offered by the congatec system utility. Working on the
target system allows for an immediate check of the BIOS changes. Another
possibility is to work in 'ROM File' mode using a host PC. Whenever a new OEM
BIOS binary file should be created, use 'ROM File' mode instead of 'Board
(CGOS)' mode.
1. Boot Microsoft Windows on the target system and start the congatec System
Utility (see congatec System Utility User's Guide for instructions about how to
install the utility) Select 'Board (CGOS)' mode to modify the onboard BIOS of
your running system. Click on the 'BIOS Module Modification' button

2. In the next dialog box that appears you have to click on the 'Create Module'
button to prepare the creation of a new module, which can be inserted into the
active BIOS later.

3. A dialog box will pop-up asking you to select the valid JPEG input data file (see
note). With some older versions of the congatec System Utility tool it may be
necessary to change the 'Files of type' selection to 'All files' to make the JPEG
file visible

4. Highlight the desired JPEG file and click on the 'Open' button. This will
automatically close the window

5. Make sure to change the 'Module Type' to 'BIOS Boot Logo' and keep the
'Module ID' set to '0000h' (default) before you click on the 'Create Module' button
again to create the new module. If your specific application requires more than
one Boot Logo in the same BIOS then contact congatec technical support for
assistance.

6. A dialog box will pop up asking you to save the created OEM 'BIOS Boot Logo'
module. In this example the module is named 'Bootlogo1.mod'.

Logo' module to the 'Current BIOS Modules'.

9. The OEM 'BIOS Boot Logo' module appears in the 'Current BIOS Modules'
window. Give your customized BIOS an explicit designator with a revision
number to allow revision tracking (in our example the 'OEM BIOS Version' is
'P915LOGO'). The 'OEM BIOS Version' is displayed during the BIOS POST and
also in the BIOS Setup program. Press the 'Apply' button to confirm your
changes.

10. The OEM 'BIOS Boot Logo' has been successfully implemented into the onboard
BIOS of your running system. A click on the 'Close' button will close the 'BIOS
Module Modification' window.

11. To display the OEM 'BIOS Boot Logo' during POST you have to enter the
system BIOS (press the <Del> key during the boot process) and change the
'Quiet Boot' setting in the 'Boot' menu to [Enabled]. Save and exit the BIOS
setup program. The system will reboot and the OEM 'BIOS Boot logo' will be
displayed. Since today's PCs boot quite quickly the logo will be shown for only a
short period of time. To extend the boot time, switch the 'Quick Boot' setting to
[Disabled].

Using the DOS version of CGUTIL
The method described here is helpful for updating the congatec BIOS on the
production line using the command lines from steps 4 and 5 in a simple DOS batch
script. All example names used in the steps below may be changed. Only the DOS
naming convention of an 8 character name and 3 character extension, separated by a
dot, must be adhered to.
1. After you've booted DOS on the congatec module, store the JPEG file (in our
example 'conga.jpg') in the same folder where the congatec System Utility tool
(CGUTLCMD.exe) is stored.
2. The JPEG file can only be inserted into the congatec BIOS after it has been
converted to a 'BIOS Boot Logo' module. To do this, switch to the folder where
the 'CGUTLCMD.exe' tool and JPEG file are stored and enter the command line:
cgutlcmd module /ot:board /create /if:conga.jpg /of:conga.mod /T:6
3. Now the created 'BIOS Boot Logo' module can be inserted into the BIOS. Enter
the command line:
cgutlcmd module /ot:board /add /if:conga.mod /T:6
4. Give your customized BIOS an explicit designator with a revision number to
allow revision tracking (in our example the 'OEM BIOS Version' is 'P915LOGO').
The 'OEM BIOS Version' will be displayed during the BIOS POST and in the
BIOS Setup program.

section). Save and exit the BIOS setup program. The system will reboot and the
OEM 'BIOS Boot Logo' will be displayed. Since today's PCs boot quite quickly,
the logo will be shown for only a short period of time. To extend the boot time,
switch the 'Quick Boot' setting to [Disabled].

Create and Add an OEM BIOS Boot Logo to
an Insyde XpressROM BIOS core
This section describes how to create and add an OEM 'BIOS Boot Logo' module to the
Insyde XpressROM BIOS core.
For description purposes, the following steps of this application note are done on a
conga-XLX CPU module with BIOS X800R113.rom. In these examples the BIOS
modifications will be done directly to the BIOS stored in the flash memory chip of the
congatec CPU module (CGUTIL tool used in 'Board (CGOS)' mode). Another possibility
is to save the current BIOS to file and work in 'ROM File' mode using a host PC. When
using this scenario, you will have to flash the modified ROM file to the congatec CPU
module after you have performed step 13 of this example.
3.1
'BIOS Boot Logo' Picture Requirements
The next few steps are common preparations for both the DOS and Windows GUI
versions of the congatec System Utility. The additional files (bmpflip.exe, cprpad.exe,
rle.exe, userlog.bat) can be found in the 'LX800_Bootlogo.zip' file on the congatec web
page in the corresponding CPU module's driver section. These files are necessary to
convert the desired bitmap file to a binary file. This binary file is necessary because the
Insyde XpressROM BIOS core is not capable of loading a standard Windows bitmap
file.
The boot logo bitmap file must be a standard Windows bitmap created by Windows
XP/2000 version of Microsoft Paint. The following resolutions are supported by the
Insyde XpressROM BIOS core.
• 640x480 pixels with 16 colors
• 640x480 pixels with 256 colors
• 800x600 pixels with 16 colors
The additional tools to create the binary file (bmpflip.exe, cprpad.exe, rle.exe) only
support bitmap files with 256 colors. If you have a 16 color bitmap file you must save it
again using 256 color depth. Additionally, the created bitmap file must use the Windows
XP/2000 version of Microsoft Paint color palette, which has a reduced color count. As a
result of this fact, only bitmaps that were created with Windows XP/2000 version of
Microsoft Paint are supported.
The reduced computing performance of the LX800 based modules may not be ideally
suited for the next few steps therefore they could be done on a host system if so
desired. In this scenario the resulting file 'logo.bin' from the last step in this section must
be copied to a temporary folder on the target system. When using the DOS version of
congatec System Utility the file must be copied into the same folder where the congatec
System Utility is stored.

1. Unzip all the files included in the folder 'Addon', which can also be found in the
'LX800_Bootlogo.zip' file, into a temporary folder. The following files must be in
the temporary folder: 'bmpflip.exe', 'cprpad.exe', 'rle.exe' and 'userlogo.bat'.
2. Suitable resolutions for a boot logo file are 640x480 and 800x600 pixels.
Depending on the resolution, a 16 or 256 color bitmap file must be created using
Windows XP/2000 version of Microsoft Paint. The only suitable color depth for
the SVGA resolution (800x600) is a 16 color bitmap file. If other resolutions or
color depths are used the display of the boot logo may be distorted, displayed
with incorrect colors or in a worst case scenario won't be displayed at all.

Note
If the bitmap file was created with another tool other than Windows XP/2000 version of
Microsoft Paint, you must save the picture as a 24-Bit Color Bitmap file using Windows
XP/2000 version of Microsoft Paint. Close Paint and reopen it. Now open the
previously created 24-Bit Color Bitmap file and save it as 256 Color Bitmap file. This
has to be done to ensure the use of the correct color palette. The colors from your
original bitmap file may differ slightly from the colors in this new 256 color bitmap file.

3. If the boot logo has a VGA resolution (640x480), choose 'File => Save as' and
save the created bitmap as a 256 color bitmap, using the filename 'logo.bmp', in
the temporary folder created in step one (Picture 14). Click on 'Yes' when
Windows XP/2000 version of MS-Paint pops up the warning shown in Picture 15.
If the designated logo has a SVGA resolution (800x600) the filename in this step
must be 'test.bmp' first. In this case you have to save it as 16 Color Bitmap first.

15. Afterwards you have to open the file 'test.bmp' again and save it now as 256
color bitmap with the filename 'logo.bmp' into the temporary folder created in
step one (Picture 14).

4. Use the batch script 'USERLOGO.BAT' to create the binary file 'logo.bin' by
double clicking it. The output file will be created automatically. This may take a
while depending on the speed of your computer and/or size of your image. If you
have done this on a host system, copy 'logo.bin' to a temporary folder on the
target system and execute the following steps. Section 3.2 describes how to
proceed using the Windows version of congatec System Utility tool. Section 3.3
describes how to proceed using the DOS version of the congatec System Utility.

Using the Windows GUI version of CGUTIL
1. Open the congatec System Utility 'CGUTLGUI.exe' and choose 'Board (CGOS)'
from 'Select operation Target' and then press the button 'BIOS Module
Modification'.

3. In the dialog box that appears next, select the file 'logo.bin', which was created in
step 2 and copied to a temporary folder on your target system.

4. Make sure to change the 'Module Type' to 'CMOS Default Map' and keep the
'Module ID' set at 0000h (default) before clicking on the 'Create Module' button
again to generate the new module. If you are planning to use more then one
OEM default CMOS map contact congatec technical support for assistance.

5. This dialog box allows you to choose a suitable filename for your OEM 'BIOS
Boot Logo' module. In this example the file is called 'OEM_Bootlogo.mod'. The
file extension 'mod' is default.

6. After the creation of the OEM 'BIOS Boot Logo' module you are able to add this
to your BIOS configuration. This can be accomplished by clicking on the button
'Add Module' and choose the previously created module (see step 5 above) in
the dialog box that appears. Now you can name your 'OEM BIOS Version'
(X800ROEM for example). After this, the OEM 'BIOS Boot Logo' module should
be visible in the list of installed modules as it is shown in the screenshot below.

7. Now click the 'Apply' button to save this configuration in the BIOS. During this
process you can see the output of the congatec System Utility tool in red letters
in the text box above the 'Apply' button. The first output states: 'Applying
changes ... (this may take a few seconds)' and after a short time the next
message appears, which states: 'Changes successfully applied!'.

8. Close the congatec System Utility by clicking on the 'Close' button. If it's
necessary to update more CPU modules with the new 'BIOS Boot Logo', it's
possible to save the whole BIOS to an output ROM file that can be flashed onto
other CPU modules.

For more information about saving the current BIOS to an output ROM file, as well as
updating the BIOS ROM file, see application note 'AN1_BIOS_Update.pdf'. This
application note can be downloaded from the congatec web page.
9. To enable the display of the boot logo press <Del> key to enter the BIOS setup
program during the POST at startup. Press the <D> key for 'Device
Configuration' (picture 23) and once in this menu press the <I> key for 'Boot
Screen Configuration'. Move the cursor to the entry 'Splash Screen' and press
<Enter> to set this value to 'Enabled' (picture 24). By changing the value 'Splash
Screen Timeout' it is possible to set the length of time the boot logo will be
displayed. Go back to the main menu of the BIOS by pressing the <ESC> key
twice. Once there press the <X> key for 'Save values and Exit'. Now your OEM
'BIOS Boot Logo' should be displayed at boot up. For detailed information about
the BIOS on congatec CPU modules equipped with AMD LX800 CPUs see their
respective user's guide, which can be found at www.congatec.com.

Using the DOS version of CGUTIL
1. First you must store the previously created binary file 'logo.bin' (step 5) on your
target system in the same folder where the congatec System Utility tool is
stored. To update the BIOS you must start the congatec System Utility tool with
the correct parameters. Switch to the folder where the system tool is stored and
enter the following command to create an OEM 'BIOS Boot Logo' module:
cgutlcmd module /ot:board /create /if:logo.bin /of:logo.mod /T:6
2. The next command will result in the OEM 'BIOS Boot Logo' module being
inserted into the actual BIOS on your target system:
cgutlcmd module /ot:board /add /if:logo.mod /T:6
3. Give your customized BIOS an explicit designator with a revision number to
allow revision tracking (in our example the 'OEM BIOS Version' is 'X800ROEM').
The 'OEM BIOS Version' will be displayed during the BIOS POST and in the
BIOS Setup program.
cgutlcmd module /ot:board /OEM:X800ROEM
4. To enable the display of the boot logo press <Del> key to enter the BIOS setup
program during the POST at startup. Switch to the 'Device Configuration' menu
and once in this menu switch to 'Boot Screen Configuration'. Enable the entry
'Splash Screen'. By changing the value 'Splash Screen Timeout' it is possible to
set the length of time the boot logo will be displayed. Leave the BIOS by
pressing the <ESC> key twice and once in the main menu press the <X> key for
'Save values and Exit'. Now your OEM 'BIOS Boot Logo' should be displayed at
boot up. For detailed information about the BIOS on congatec CPU modules
equipped with AMD LX800 CPUs see their respective user's guide, which can be
found at www.congatec.com.

If it's necessary to update more CPU modules with the new 'BIOS Boot Logo', it's
possible to save the whole BIOS to an output ROM file that can be flashed onto other
CPU modules.

For more information about saving the current BIOS to an output ROM file, as well as

application note can be downloaded from the congatec web page.
If it is necessary to update many modules the DOS version is the preferred congatec
System Utility version due to the fact that it is much faster than using the Windows GUI
version.
