SKI TRAVEL SHOW ISSUE
Big skiing is planned
to kick off CMSC’s 2012
season of trip offerings
Experts from some of the best ski resorts are
coming to the Cleveland Ski Travel Show on May 7th
Plan your day now! Cleveland Ski
Travel Show for group/club trip decision makers is coming to the area,
Saturday May 7, 2011, Marriott
Cleveland Airport. The day starts
with an educational session with the
ski industry from 10 – 11:30 AM,
then the Exhibitor Show from 11:30
AM – 2 PM and reception at 2 PM
with a chance to win door prizes.
The educational session is great for
new trip leaders.
All signups are done through your
clubs President or Trips Chair.
For the last 15 years, this event
has been very successful bringing
together ski clubs/groups, ski resort
and tour operators to discuss and
negotiate ski trips for next season
and the future.
Reasons to Attend:
It’s in the best interest of all ski
clubs to offer well-planned, wellrun, value-packed ski trips. To help
achieve that goal, the Travel Show is
making a special effort again to trip

2011 Ski Season
Hope everyone had a great ski
season. Mother Nature did provide
the show and we hope you got to go
skiing. CMSC’s Beaver Creek trip was
great and the review is in this issue
of Sitzmark.
2012 Ski Season
The 2012 ski season is being
planned. Next year, CMSC and a few
council clubs are headed for the
“Biggest Skiing in America” with
access to 5,512 skiable acres, 220
named runs covering over 110 miles
three separate mountains, the
longest run of six miles, vertical
drop of 4,350 ft, consistently recognized in the national ski magazines
for short or non-existent lift lines,
and annual snowfall is 400+ inches.
OK, with that information on the ski
area, let’s go to Montana and ski Big
Sky! The Big Sky trip is set for March
17-24, 2012.
Big Sky has three mountains to
delight skiers and snowboarders.
Lone Mountain is the resort's signature peak, rising to 11,166 feet. The
Lone Peak Tram takes the adventuresome to its apex with European
style expert terrain below. Big Sky
offers enough terrain for all levels
and enough elbow room to enjoy it.
Andesite Mountain has some of the
resort's most notable intermediate
cruising runs, some comfortable
south-facing beginner trails, several
expert tree runs and a super pipe
and giant terrain park. Flat Iron
Mountain is on the eastern shoulder
of Andesite and offers even more
variety. The Big Sky ResortMoonlight Basin interconnects the
“Biggest Skiing in America.”
2013 Ski Season
In the next couple of months, we
will be looking into the 2013 season.
Ski areas which we will be considering for the 2013 ski season are Banff,
Park City, Steamboat, Sun Valley,
Whistler, Mammoth, and any other
ones that may be suggested.
Here’s a quote out of National Ski
Club Newsflash from 2011:
“LIFT TICKET PRICES HIT $100 for
those skiers not lucky enough to be
skiing with a ski club, Vail and
Breckenridge have raised the price
of lift tickets to over $100. Aspen
promised not to top $100 this season so a ticket at the window during
high season is now “only” $99. Vail’s
ticket at the window cost $102 from
Dec. 17 through Christmas Day. The
price went up to $108 from Dec. 2631 and Breckenridge's top price was
$102.”
Makes you glad that you ski with a
club and that we get group discounts doesn’t it. Ski with a club or
the council, it’s more fun and the
cost is less!

CMSC PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Don’t forget:
CMSC wants YOU!
By Dale Wolboldt,
CMSC President
As I end my first term as
President, I would like to thank
everyone for all of their support! I
couldn’t have done it without you.
This has been a very busy year.
One of my goals was to visit each
club, and unfortunately, I wasn’t
able to do that. I still plan on visiting a few more clubs. One of our
biggest accomplishments was to
rewrite the CMSC Constitution
which was approved by the delegates at the February, 2011 meeting. This was a huge task by the
committee which lays the groundwork to help CMSC grow.
We just ended the race season
with our final race at Swain. It was
a great season and the race committee did another wonderful job!
One unique challenge was the
weekend that CMSC was supposed
to race at Cockaigne. Unfortunately,
the lodge burned down four days
prior to our race. Boostie Ricketts
and the race committee did a marvelous job in substituting the race
at Peak-n-Peek. Special thanks to
Cockaigne and Peak-n-Peek for
working together to make it happen.
Also, don’t forget the Racer’s
Banquet at Reinecker’s Party Center
on April 9, 2011. Hope to see everyone there!
Wendy and Brian White also did
an excellent job with the Kid’s Race
Program. They are going to step
down after next season, and we
need someone to continue the Kid’s
CMSCers treated their ski fever
with a trip to Beaver Creek
By Bill Fry, Trip Coordinator
The council took 83 skiers to
Beaver Creek, January 15th to 22nd.
We literally had people from across
the country; some from California,
Kansas, North Carolina, and of
course Cleveland and Akron/Canton.
Moving that number of travelers can
be a nightmare if things don’t go
just right. But as luck would have it,
everything was on time. Part of our
Akron/Canton flight had to wait for
the Cleveland people due to the
buses allotted us. With the help of
Gary Pavell and Pam Korenewych,
our Vice President, things went
smoothly. We all made the quick
grocery/liquor stop and still managed to get out on time. I am not
sure, but I think Al and Donna
Brancifort thought this was a two
week trip from the number of groceries they bought.
The ride to the Arrowhead condos
went smoothly with good weather.
The Arrowhead reservation staff was
quick to check us in and get most of
the luggage to our rooms. We had an
incident with one of the boot bags.
It was delivered to the wrong room
and even after the staff called and
talked to most every condo (or left a
voicemail) we didn’t find the boot
bag until we got ready to leave for
home. It was not really anyone’s
fault; it just got stuffed behind a
door in one of the condos.
Gloria from Ski.com, our tour
operator met us at the condos, and
had a meet and greet wine and
cheese party for us. She passed out
the lift tickets and found the owners
of the luggage that had no
nametags. Our condos were a short
walk to the lifts or as Ken Neff and
Rita Tinker found out a short ride up
the hill with the on call staff at the
complex.
The first day of skiing was sunshine and mid twenties. We did an
on- mountain tour. Our guide was
from Casper, Wyoming and I found
out he was a former roommate of my
old buddy Paul Franklin. Better
known as Bullwinkle, a past member
of the Goodyear Ski Club. I highly
recommend the mountain tours.
Not only was there no waiting in lift
lines but it shows you the best snow,
runs, and gives you a little history
along the way.
On Monday many of us went to
Vail. A little colder, but a foot of new
snow. Dale Wolboldt our Prez, took
Chris (Crash) Kraszewski, Alicia
Christy and myself into the back
bowls. For the most part it wasn’t
bad. Alicia kept saying, “I’m going
die, I’m going to die”. But with the
help of Dale, she made it out of the
bowls and is still with us. Like I
said, it wasn’t too bad until the bottom. We had to ski into a very small
and very deep ravine. You are supposed to go straight in and straight
back out. But I went straight in, and
flew straight up into the air and
came back down and buried the
back of my skies into the bindings.
No binding release, no way out. If it
wasn’t for Dale, I might still be there.
Some of us met at Garfinkel’s afterward for burgers and beers. The
council sold more spots on the bus
than we planned on, so with the
extra money we bought a few pitchers of beer. Jim Hart, and some others played cards. John & Kim Vorhies
enjoyed socializing with some new
friends. We used the Turtle Bus for
our transfers. Bet most of you have
not been on a bus with a bar in the
back and with a stripper pole in the
middle. But that is another story.
Back to Beaver for our third day of
skiing. More snow, cloudy in the AM,
but sunshine and warmer as the day
progressed. I skied with Leslee
Dennis, (I believe we have a picture
of her kissing an Elk somewhere and
she had only been away from her
husband a few days) Gary and Chris.
On Wednesday, I had set up a party
at the Saloon in Minturn for late in
the afternoon. You had two ways to
get there. A charter bus we provided
from Arrowhead or ski the “Minturn
Mile”. This is backcountry skiing
from Vail. With lots of snow, it can
be a blast. And lots of snow is exactly what they had. I was told the first
thousand yards or so was powder up
to their waist. John Fiehn who is a
very good skier found out he was not
a powder skier that day. He fell more
than once, Bill Stuart, and Pete
Wells have photos, along with a
video of Johns demise. Suzanne
Kanzleiter and many others skied
the “Mile” with much less trouble
than John. We all met at the Saloon
for a great get-together. Andy
Kaufman, the owner, was a great
host. He had plenty of Mexican food,
drinks and more drinks. Kim Salani
and Brian Flickinger from Vail/
Beavercreek sales were our guests at
the Saloon. The party was suppose
to be from 3:30P to 5:30P but
because of all the snow that had fallen that day, it was taking the Turtle
Bus much longer to make the trip
back and forth to the condos for the
transfers. So some of us volunteered
to stay back and wait for the last bus
and our Prez, said, “Just buy more
drink coupons”. At around 830P, the
last group left the Saloon. Larisa
Simays, and some of the other
ladies showed us their moves on the
stripper pole. But it was definitely
“G” rated. All clothes stayed on.
Thursday another great day of skiing, we had more snow and temperatures in the mid twenties to low
thirties. That evening some of us
met for dinner and wished Esther
Detray a happy birthday. Friday
came too quickly. But again more
snow, warm weather, and sunshine.
Friday late afternoon it started
snowing heavy and snowed most of
Program. Let me or Brian know if
you are interested in taking over for
them. We would hate to lose our up
and coming racers. These kids are
the future of Metro!
Thanks to the trip committee for
running an excellent trip to Beaver
Creek in January. A lot of the clubs
were represented on this trip. We
had fresh powder, great parties, and
fun skiing.
CMSC needs people to volunteer
for Executive Board and committee
positions. Contact your nominating
chair Gary Pavell or your CMSC delegate if you are interested in running for an Executive Board position. Nominations are being accepted until May 5th. CMSC needs your
help. Contact me if you are interested in volunteering for a committee
chair. There are some people who
have been doing the same job for
several years and are going to retire
and we need to replace them. See
skicleveland.com for a listing.
There were several clubs who
supported 3-Trackers this year, and I
would like to thank all those clubs
for helping them out. Most recently, Timken Ski Club sponsored “Ski
with a Heart On” on February 19th
at Kissing Bridge. It was a day of
fun at KB with games, raffles, and a
costume contest.
I would like to thank all our clubs
and their members for their hard
work and generosity supporting
other charities which are too
numerous to list here. Keep up the
good work!
This has been a fun ski season.
There are a lot of clubs that having
summer activities. The annual
CMSC Golf Outing is in July. More
information is on the website at skicleveland.com.
Your Prez, Dale!
P.S. I will be out windsurfing and
biking! And, DON’T FORGET, CMSC
WANTS YOU!

the night. Our Cleveland group had
to depart at 5:00 a.m. for their ride
back to Denver. The Akron/Canton
left at 1:30pm. A normal 2½ hour
ride became more like 4½ hours.
Passes were closed, chains on the
buses, cars off the road. And due to
cost constraints our second bus
with the Canton group was a 22 passenger people mover with no bathroom. Sorry guys. All got to Denver
with time to spare. The flights were
on time and even arrived early. We
only had one injury. A shoulder separation for Pat Robinson and I was
told she was doing fine.
Thanks to everyone who helped
move our large group. Mike & Eileen
Wile, anytime I needed anything
they were there. Gary Pavell and
Pam Korenewych with the Cleveland
group and of course my partner in
crime Art “Pokieman” Pokopac. He
helped to keep me on the straight
and narrow. That in and of itself is a
real challenge.

2011 Geiger’s Rookie Racer Challenge
CMSC charity race benefits
Cystic Fibrosis Foundation
CMSC Racing donated $500 to the local chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis
Foundation (CCF) at its February 13th race at Boston Mills. (Above) CCF
volunteers Rick LeBeau and his stepdaughter Paula Kovac (holding
check), who has CF, were on hand to accept the donation from CMSC
Race Chair Bootsie Ricketts. Boston Mills also donated about $166, representing one dollar for each CMSC racer who participated in the day’s race.
For more information about CCF, visit www.cff.org. Visit www. greatstrides.com for information on participating in their fundraising walk.
Over 50 “rookie racers” pushed
through the start gate in Geiger’s
Rookie Racer Challenge (GRRC),
sponsored by Geiger’s Ski & Sport
Haus/Geiger’s of Lakewood. The
Challenge was created to encourage
skiers to try CMSC’s adult race program and keep them coming back.
Each skier who tried racing for the
first time was eligible to win a $25
gift certificate to Geiger’s the day
they qualified. GRRC 2011 $25 winners
were:
Brian
Korfage
(Fagowees); Dan DiMario (Warren);
Matt Whitaker (Snowballers); Eric
Main (Snowballers); David Ball (Hi
Rise) Greg Patterson (Euclid); Doug
Axtell (Continental); Jake Vallimont
(Highlanders). Greg Shumaker of
Erie Shore Ski Club won a $50 gift
certificate at the Boston Mills qualifying race in January.
All qualifiers were entered to win
the $500 gift certificate each time
they raced. The certificate will be
awarded at the CMSC Race Banquet
April 9 at Reinecker’s Party Center.
See skicleveland.com or your race
chair for banquet details.
Jake Vallimont of Highlanders Ski Club was one of the winners of a $25

Saturday, April 9th at Reinecker’s
Party Center and everyone is welcome whether you’re a racer or
not. We just like to have fun and
the more the merrier so make
those reservations, dream up a
Farmageddon costume and join
us.
Mid way though the season one
of our racers attended a surprise
wedding and was asked to do a
reading entitled “Lord let us have
fun”. That sentiment has stuck
with me since and I keep thinking
it’s a great way to sum up the race
season or in my case my racing
years. Each week as the race
would draw closer I would hope
and pray that everyone would
have fun and everything would
run smoothly. Sure I know we all
want to do well and improve but
the one thing that keeps us all
coming back week after week and
year after year are the fun and
camaraderie of this great group.
Not only are we fun, we are a flexible group too. When plans have
to change at the last minute, say
because a resort burns down
where we’re supposed to race that
weekend, everyone pulls together
to help make our backup plan a
success and then pulls together
with donations of equipment and
money to help that area get up
and operating again. When we
add a new venue that’s new to all
of us, everyone is patience and
rolls with the day. When on those
occasions when we crash, there’s
always someone there to help
whether it’s a hand, a word of
encouragement or to commiserate at the bar, we are there.
When conditions are good and
bad we are there ready to back
each other up and cheer each
other on. So from now on my
mantra is and will be “Lord let us
have fun” for each race, each
weekend and each event in
between. We’re a great group and
we deserve it!
So as the ski season comes to a
close don’t forget it’s always a
great time to recruit new skiers
and new racers to join our group.
It will be a new ski season again
before we know it.
Please email me anytime at
[email protected] with questions or comments about our season or program. It’s all of you that
makes our program great.
Have a good summer!

The eleventh season of the
CMSC kids race program is now in
the history books. Mother Nature
cooperated, and we were able to
run all eight scheduled races plus
a bonus “Kids Open Challenge
Race.” You’ll have to wait until
the next Sitzmark for details on
the bonus race, but here is how
the rest of the season unfolded.
After starting the season at
Kissing Bridge, we ran a local race
at Big Creek, on opening weekend
for the area. Thanks to Gwen
Santoro, Todd Chapin, and a
whole host of others for making
the Big Creek race happen.
We then heard the horrible
news that the lodge at Cockaigne
burned to the ground. On only a
few days notice, we were able to
move the race to Peek n Peak,
where we raced both Saturday and
Sunday. We are very happy to
hear that Cockaigne has opened
back up for skiing, and we hope to
race at Cockaigne next year.
In February, we ran a GS at
Swain, followed by two local
slalom races, one at Snow Trails (a
new venue) and the other at
Boston Mills. Boston Mills was
our largest race of the year. We
wrapped up the season with a topto-bottom, dual GS race at Swain.
We’d like to highlight two very
special wins from the season.
Neil Whitmore has been racing in
the program for five years and
took home his first win ever at
Peak n Peek.
Nine year old
Jeannie Fritz has been racing in
the program for six years and took
home her first win ever at Boston
Mills. That’s right, Jeannie started
racing when she was three.
We continue to be blessed by
fantastic folks that support the
program financially.
We had
prizes for the kids at every race. At
several races, we were able to provide every child with a prize. All
our racers this year received a

Mark! We were also able to raffle
off two pairs of skis donated by

may be spur of the moment events
throughout the spring and summer.
Information regarding these

See You at the Top, Esprit’s youth program, can be found donating their
time with the senior citizens at a Cleveland area senior apartment building. Once a month the kids shae fellowship with the elderly by crafting,
serving lunch and sharing the Word. The children not only donate their
time, but they also participate in seasonal sporting activities. By the
time you are reading this we have already begun training for local 5k
walks and rock climbing. As the summer progresses, the youth will also
participate in tennis and off-roading excursions. To find out more information on our kids club please visit our website at espritsportsclub.com.

are on the 2nd Thursday of each
month, Sept. to Mar., at 7:00 pm.
We also have guest speakers at our
meetings and once a year we have
our famous ‘Chili Cookoff’. Our
Chili Cookoff winner this year was
Sandy Cayet and she gets to display the ‘Silver Ladle’ trophy above
her mantle this year.
This year our club is going to
Snowmass, Mar. 20-26, ski-in/skiout. Our two day trips to Holiday
Valley/Holimont, coventured with
Suburban Ski Club were filled with
fun loving skiers, as were the one
day trips.
The club is going on a New
England/Canada cruise Sept. 1-10,
come join us and meet new people.
The ESSC race team had a fun
and successful year with ski and
snowboard racing . Our two young
racers, Cory and Taylor Miller, had a
spectacular race season. Even
though our numbers were down
this year, the team did very good.
You don’t have to be a pro racer,
but racing will make you a better
skier and you will meet a lot of
great people.
So join us for skiing and enjoy

Erie Ski Club
While Spring may be in the air,
there is still snow on the slopes,
and the Erie Ski Club continues to
take advantage of that situation.
As this goes to press, we are finishing up the preparation for our trip
to Banff/Lake Louise, scheduled to
Esprit’s See You at the Top skiers Diamond Hall and Gregory Evan
Conwell.
take off on Saturday, March 19th.
Many of our members are also still
enjoying the slopes at the local
resorts.
We have had a busy and funfilled season this year. We have
ESCaped to Kissing Bridge,
Holiday Valley, Holimont, the
Wilderness Lodge for cross country
skiing, and to Cockaigne. We also
presented the Warren Miller film
“Wintervention” at the Tom Ridge
Environmental Center in both
January and February. This was a
first-time event for the club and
exceeded all our expectations for
success. Both shows in January
were sold out, and our shows in
February had respectable attendance as well. Throw in the door
prizes, 50-50, and the happy hour
specials available up the road at
Joe Roots Bar and Grill, and it
made for a great time for one and
all! This will definitely be a do-over
for next year.
Our race team also had a successful season. Hats off to Tom,
Ric and Mark for all collecting
medals this year.
On January 23rd, a group of
about 40 members of the Erie Ski
Club had a marvelous day of skiing
at Cockaigne. We were all devastated to learn of their tragic fire
which occurred the following day.
So, as a result of the success of the
“Wintervention” event, our club
used some of the proceeds to
make a donation of 12 patrol belts
for members of the Cockaigne ski
patrol who lost their equipment in
that fire. Board members presented the new belts to the Cockaigne
ski patrol representatives on March
5th.
And, alas, all good things must
come to an end, so as we anticipate
the end of this exceptional ski season, we look forward to our 12th
Annual Snowsports Golf Challenge
at Orchard Ponds Golf Course on
Sunday, June 5th.
As always, our membership
meetings are on the first Monday of
each month at the Plymouth Tavern
in downtown Erie. Social hour
begins at 7 PM with a short business meeting at 8 PM. For more
information, contact us at erieskiclub.com to plan your next
ESCape!
Esprit Ski Club
See You at the Top youth participants Diamond Hall, age 11 and
Gregory Evan Conwell, age 8, conquered the slalom course on
Boston Mills diamond racing slope
Croyle!
Both are second year attendees
but each has their unique story.
Diamond skied for the first time
last season and showed much
promise. She paced behind her
instructor at every lesson and
earned a light blue intermediate
sticker. Having only progressed to
the easy breezy slope of Buttermilk,
she wasn't quite ready to race. This
season she returned with a
vengeance and took it upon herself
to take double lessons at the outings preparing for a possible race.
Evan on the other hand traded in
his skis for a snowboard and only
went to skis when he was told he
had no other choice. After experiencing a run on the diamond slope
Grizzly at Brandywine, he advised
that with a little more practice he
would for sure be a race contender.
Hence, our dynamic duo for 2010-
Good Times members Ed and Michael obviously enjoying "Good Times"
during a Wednesday trip to Holiday Valley, NY.
2011!!!
With Diamond's determination
and Evan's child-like spirit to try
anything, the crash course training
began. The Sunday before the race
Reginald Garrett pushed these
youth through a number of drills
taking them from Buttermilk to
North Bowl and finally Croyle racing hill. They were told to follow in
his tracks with Diamond responding by trailing his tail. Next, he
became their audible gates yelling
"TURN… TURN!" as they weaved
down the mountain. The only thing
left was a pep talk and the anticipation of race day!
Sunday February 13th was a
beautiful sunny day with unseasonably warm temps. Logistics became
a challenge with bright and early
registration followed by late afternoon racing. None the less, our
team made it on time taking plenty
of practice runs before the event.
The fellow ski clubs of CMSC
helped to cheer on our newbies
with plenty of accolades and a ringing cow bell leading them to the
finish! Diamond and Evan could
not have given a better performance. Although there is still much
to be learned about the etiquette
and rules of racing, THEY DID IT!!!
The two walked away with a full
color CMSC Kids Racing medal,
helmet bags, “only a kid could
love,” ski pole sparkling lights and
a huge banner of accomplishment
that they will cherish for the rest of
their lives!

another night of Whirleyball May

May 14th the event that has
become a spring tradition they
have their night at the theater for
the musical “Into the Woods”
(rumor has it that it is based on
Mike K-Dupa’s hiking experiences
with the dwarfs and nomads). Then
to round out the month of May,
May 21st actually, the club hosts
the annual charity ride/Bike
Scavenger Hunt which will take you
to the treasures of University
Heights, Shaker Lakes and Shaker
Square. This is a charity event with
a heart and a very local connection.
The Fagowees throw one of the
best Anniversary Parties around
(we had over 75 last year and want
to reach 100 this year). So how do
you do it-keep great food and an
open bar and reduce the price by
not $10 but go the extra $1.00 and
reduce it $11.00. We are also raffling of a big prize, which should
help you fill up that empty wall in
your media room. It’s a Luau
theme, so shorts with the tux jacket would be appropriate. The date
Friday June 17th, so you have all
weekend to recover, hopefully when
you wake up on Saturday, it will be
on a nice beach.
Whitewater rafting returns in July
on the weekend of the 15th. The
infamous Kelly’s Island bike ride
will take place on July 30th. No
cameras are allowed-what happens
on Kelly’s stays on Kelly’s. Yes
there is Quarry on the Island that
should help to swallow up any
secrets.
The big trip to end the summer is
set to return, the houseboat Labor
Day weekend trip. This one we
have to take pictures so you can be
shown all of the fun that you had
and maybe don’t remember having.
Yes the picture party is a month or
so later and always has plenty of
surprises.
Of course we do stuff during the
week. After all you must train hard
on the art of having fun and enjoying life even during the work week.
So how do we do it. Monday and
Wednesday bike rides, Thursday
night golf, Tuesday night informal
and formal meetings. Of course we
slip the monthly Happy Hour,
maybe some volleyball and whatever else our summer social dude
John or any member comes up
with.
You may have noticed that no
names were mention. Yes, is some
cases it is to protect the guilty. But
if you want to find out more information just go to the internationally famous FAGOWEE web site, better known as www.Fagowees.org.
Then you can get all the details,
a summer schedule, list of trips
and their leaders and know that
there is no off season when it
comes to Fun And Games when you
hang with the Fagowee Ski Club.
Good Times Ski Club
Good Times were had by the
members of our aptly-named club
who attended weekly Wednesday
trips during the past season.
Mother Nature provided magnificent snow this season and we
enjoyed every bit of it. We skied at
Holiday Valley, Kissing Bridge, and
Cockaigne (before the unfortunate
fire), but missed our annual trip to
Seven Springs due to rain.
Considering the remarkable weather and conditions provided on all
the other Wednesdays, it was a disappointment, but a small price to
pay.
Our annual “lunch on the slopes”
turned into “lunch alongside the
pool” when Holiday Valley allowed
us to cook and eat together on the
terrace outside the main lodge.
The weather was great as we
relaxed on patio furniture, eating
hotdogs cooked over hot coals, and
sharing the many potluck foods
(and beverages) brought by attendees. That same day we skied on
12 inches of newly fallen snow and
soaked up a full day of sunshine.
The day was summed up this way
by one of the skiers as we returned
Once again, we will be hosting
the Lew Lamb V Memorial Golf
Outing benefiting the Muscular
Dystrophy Association. The date
will be Saturday, May 14, 2011 at
the Lower Course at Peek 'n Peak.

holes of golf with a GPS cart (4 person scramble), access to the Peek's

to our bus at that evening, “If there
ever was a heaven on earth, this
was it.”
Looking back now that the season has ended, the 2011 season
surely will be one for the records.
We had great weather, excellent
snow, and enough members and
guests in attendance to make each
trip financially viable. We had ski
trips scheduled every Wednesday
from January 12 through March 16,
and missed only two due to poor
weather conditions. Put all together, it adds up to GREAT FUN and
GOOD TIMES for the 2011 season!
In closing, we ask that our
friends from the Cleveland area
who read this consider joining us
next season for a Wednesday trip or
two to the slopes. We always have
room on the coach and will gladly
pick you up near the Interstates 11
and 90 interchange as we pass
through from our starting point in
Warren. We will give you a lift to
Holiday Valley or Kissing Bridge,
where you can join in on a day of
fun with a group of adults interested in skiing on pristine slopes without lift lines. Club members enjoy
sharing the day with others of like
mind, and will do all they can to
make you feel welcome. Keep us in
mind as you retire your skies for
the 2011 season and plan your trips
for 2012. We would enjoy having
you along for a midweek trip, and
we promise you always a very Good
Time.

On May 28 we will ride our bikes on
the towpath up through the
Cuyahoga Valley, have lunch at

friends to enjoy.
Bob Seidel has secured Spring
Hills for our annual Golf Scramble
We have had a wonderful winter,
now it’s time to plan for spring and
summer. Hi Rise plans four golf
events for 2011. We will have two
one-club outings at Greenridge golf
course, one this spring on April 2,
and one in the fall. As the name
suggests, you play the entire nine
holes with one club for tee shots,
fairway shots, and putts. We will
have a golf outing in June and
September, which will be four person scrambles that include dinner
and prizes. All CMSC members are
welcomed to participate! We are
hopeful that these events will prepare us to defend the Metro Cup at
the CMSC golf outing July 23, 2011.
We do more that just golf. There
will be a canoe trip, breakfast hike,
and dinner of the months! More
details will be available on our
website www.hiriseskiclub.com
Inner City Ski Club
a.k.a. Inner City Ski Bums
What’s up fellow skiers? As
usual, you generally report that the
ski season was much too short.
Well this year might be just a little
different because across the states,
we have had an ample amount of
snow fall to fulfill most of our
dreams.
Now the questions
become, did you get your “rush
on?” and did you get your “adrenaline fix?” If you haven’t, there still
may be time to do a short run
down the mountain slopes for
spring skiing.
In the meantime, we’re going to
look back on our activities as we
followed the trails across the country. Before we do that however, we
must welcome our group of junior
skiers that applied and were granted scholarship funding for lessons
and trips. Watch out now!; our juniors are on the move. They looked
great on the slopes as they tackled
skiing and snowboarding. They are
having fun, are being challenged,
and are eager to go to the next
skilled level. Needless to say, they
are fast learners. We anticipate

Sandusky Ski Club
The 2010/2011 ski season was
another banner year for the
Sandusky Ski Club. The ski trips
began with a weekend at
Schuss/Shanty Creek in Michigan
which included a P.J. Party as a fun
après ski activity. A fun and romantic weekend trip went to Boyne
Highlands in Michigan under the
title of “Ski Club Lights Up My Life.”
There were two day trips: one on a
Saturday to Holiday Valley and one
on a Sunday to Peek ‘N Peak. The
Peek ‘N Peak trip was over
President’s Day weekend when the
resort holds their annual NASTAR
Races and Prize Awards. In the senior ladies category, the Sandusky
Ski Club swept the trophies: Nancy
Meyer 1st, Beth Akins 2nd and Pat
Williams 3rd. Seven other members also won trophies. (See the
photo.) Also, 15 of the club’s racers
earned NASTAR medals.
Something very special happened on a week’s west ski trip to
the Lake Tahoe area. Long time
members of the ski club Roger and
Jill Fox renewed their wedding vows
on the slopes of Heavenly where
they were married 20 years ago.
Skiing has kept them in great
shape. Jill was able to wear her
snow white wedding ski outfit in
which she was married. The other
week west trip is going on at
Jackson Hole Wyoming as this article is being written. The skiers
won’t be back until after the SITZMARK deadline.
This is the first time in the 49year history of the Sandusky Ski
Club that the Ski Queen candidates
are both snow boarders, one of
which, Daria Deno, has won a trophy in the women’s snow boarding
category two years in a row at Peek
N’ Peak. The other candidate,
Debbie Mould, won a trophy last
year, her first year in the club.
Believe it or not, our Queen’s
Contest meeting had to be
rescheduled because of a snow
storm which cancelled the meeting.
However, we do have a new
Sandusky Ski Club King, James
Schauffler, who was selected at a
January meeting.
The 2010/2011 ski season will
wrap up at the annual spring banquet on Saturday, April 16 at the

Suburban Ski Club
What a season we had! A western
trip, an eastern trip, two overnight
trips, and seven day trips, all of
them nearly sold out, and almost
all with outstanding ski conditions.
We had a family ski day, three
Sunday trips, two holiday trips, and
an end-of-season highly discounted skier appreciation day. Thanks
to all of our trip leaders, to everyone else in the club who played a
role, to our skiers, and to Erie
Shore Ski Club that helped us fill
buses on joint trips.
As the weather deteriorates, we
have plenty of activities coming up
to help cure the summer doldrums.
We are excited about our first-time
cruise in September—ten days on
a luxury liner sailing off the eastern
coast from New Jersey to Maine, on
to Nova Scotia, and back with multiple stops on the way. Leading up
to that will be bicycling, hiking,
dancing, museum tours, parties,
monthly restaurant outings, and
much more.
Suburban Ski Club is a friendly
group of skiers with lots of opportunities to ski We ski every week
during the winter months. Our convenient meeting location, Alfredo’s
at the Holiday Inn just off Wilson

Timken Ski Club
Timken Ski Club, located in
Canton, Ohio, was formed in 1982
by a small group of employees of
The Timken Company. You do not
need to be a Timken Company
employee to join.
We have had a great year with
lots & lots of snow. The ski season
is coming to a close with only one
more ski trip on the agenda. On
March 18, 24 members departed
Alliance, OH by train, heading to
Chicago where they will met 2 more
members (coming from Florida),
changed trains to the “Empire
Builder” heading to Whitefish, MT.
On March 19, 21 members boarded
aircraft to get to the same destination. The 47 TSC members settled
in to the accommodations at the
Lodge at Whitefish Lake. They
skied at Whitefish Mountain Resort
(formerly Big Mountain), plus an
optional one day side trip to ski at
Fernie, BC. Many of the club members were also anxious to take a
day excursion into Glacier National
Park.
In February, the club went to
Telluride. A huge surprise was the
lodging at Aspen Street Inn. The
Inn was just a few steps to the gondola & had very gracious & accommodating innkeepers. Locals say
the Inn has the best breakfast in
town!
There is a road rally being
planned for our spring party on
May 21st. Also, in May, we will
start our summer biking program
that will run thru September. Our
calendar is dotted with socials
which may take us to local winery, a
fire station spaghetti supper or
breakfast followed by a hike along
the towpath or Camp Tuscazoar.

Erie Ski Club donates to the
Cockaigne Ski Patrol
On January 24, 2011, a fire destroyed the lodge at Cockaigne Ski Center in
Cherry Creek, NY, which also housed the ski patrol facilities. The ski patrollers
lost most of their personal items; i.e., ski boots, skis, patrol jackets, gloves, goggles, first aid patrol belts. Toboggans and blankets, oxygen cylinders and first aid
supplies were also lost. Neighboring ski areas have lent some equipment until
the end of the season; plenty of bandages, splints and other first aid supplies
have been donated.
To help replace some of what was lost, the Erie Ski Club in Erie, PA recently
purchased 12 patrol belts for individuals of the Cockaigne patrol, a volunteer
organization. Patrollers, as a rule, purchase their own equipment and clothing.
Judy Baker, a volunteer with the Peek’n Peak ski patrol and board member of the
Erie Ski Club, coordinated the donation with Karen Gollnitz, Cockaigne’s medical
supply officer, and the National Ski Patrol. In support of their own, NSP extended a substantial discount.
Funds for this donation were made possible through the showing of Warren
Miller’s film, “Wintervention”, in January and February. Sponsored by Elements
Board Shop, Erie Ski Club, Erie Sports Store, Peek’n Peak Resort & Spa, and Big
Green Screen Theater at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center, the first two
shows sold out. The ESC board was considering several charitable organizations
to support when the fire at Cockaigne occurred. Members of the Erie Ski Club
have long-enjoyed the slopes at Cockaigne and 40 members of the club had
skied there just the day before so it was very fitting to offer assistance.
The Cockaigne Ski Patrol is planning fundraisers to purchase equipment for
the 2011-2012 winter season. They also hope to supplement the out-of-pocket
expenses to individuals purchasing new patrol jackets. Anyone interested in
donating to the Cockaigne Ski Patrol should contact Karen Gollnitz at 716-4105278 or [email protected], and use subject line: Ski Patrol Donation.

APRIL 2011
Following a fantastic winter season with both current and some
newly discovered faces, we would
like to express much gratitude to
everyone that supported and contributed to these fun ski trips! Our
open-minded philosophy of cooperation and friendship welcomed
groups from all over Northeast
Ohio and Western Pennsylvania! It
was truly a pleasure to work with
different groups and other social
clubs.
As
warmer
weather
becomes constant, gas prices rise,
and the economy remains uncertain, we still strive to offer a more
affordable option to singles and
couples! Despite what is thrown or
way, The Youngstown Ski Club will
always create an atmosphere of
enthusiasm and camaraderie
through social activities. Ongoing
events include our popular "Pub of
the Month" which is a social party
typically occurring every fourth
Tuesday at truly established local
taverns. We encourage everyone to
check us out since it is not uncommon for 50-80 people to be in
that includes a rainforest adventure and canal tour that still
remains in planning phase; a "Las
Vegas Escape" for 5 days and 4
nights; a "New England Cruise" for
10 days and 9 nights to Portland
Maine, Halifax Nova Scotia, and
Boston Massachusetts to name a
few; and an "Italy & Greek Isle
Cruise" for 14 days and 13 nights
to Italy, Croatia, Greece, and
Turkey.
The Youngstown Ski Club is
comprised of enthusiastic and
fun-loving people who seek likeminded individuals. We welcome
Council Club Members to work
with us on future events/trips.
Look our way for another activityfilled season and updates to additional excursions that are in planning! Again, we appreciate the
efforts that Council, affiliate clubs,
and our Trip Manager and Tour
Operator/Assistant Trip Manager
puts into giving us trips to promote, experience, and remember
for a lifetime. We hope to build
upon past relationships, and welcome new groups to discover our
social network. Join us!

winter to spring and summer
events, it is time to reflect on all
the latest adventures experienced
by our membership and affiliates.
This cooperative effort permitted
outstanding ski trips to snowy
Peek'n Peak NY, Holimont NY,
Bristol Mountain NY, Mount Snow
Vermont, Holiday Valley NY, and
Snowshoe WV. Every trip was
unique and displayed the kind of
fun and acceptance not discovered
anywhere else. With offerings of
silliness, laughter, great food, fabulous parties, silver wicket awards,
and close friendships, how can
anyone miss an event or trip?
Some of the non-skiing things we
look forward to include but not
limited to are Bar Crawls, picnics,
water skiing and swimming, camping, horseback riding, hiking and
biking, canoeing, golfing, Winery

At this time, the current committee has decided to retire. While it
has been loads of fun, the idea of
the pageant seems to have run its
course. Year to year, we struggle to
get an adequate number of clubs to
nominate a queen. The pageant also
takes loads of volunteer time to
arrange and put on and we have had
a hard time keeping committee
numbers high enough to even out
the work load. While the parties at
Ampol Hall were a great party, they
were exhausting for the committee.
If there are volunteers to keep the
pageant running, please contact
Dale Wobold, CMSC President

Career Highlight: Winning Combined when I wasn't even planning to

Metro Memories: Queen pageant after 2 years on committee, all the

They skied their hearts out
for Ski with a Heart On
February 19th the 2nd Ski with a
Heart On fundraising event for
Three Trackers came together with
the wonderful support of Rich and
his Kissing Bridge staff, and our fellow ski clubs - Timken, Fagowees,
HiRise, Warren/Youngstown, and
Snowballers. Without your support
– the event would not have happened – THANK YOU! Esprit Ski
Club just happened to be at Kissing
Bridge that day, and joined in on a
few of the events for the day.
Planning the event is always
stressful – I worry everything - not
enough
people
signing up, the
last minute adds
and drops, all the
phone calls to
make, the pick up
points and times it was a bit of a
hair pulling experience; but it all
came
together
that
morning.
The two Martine
buses departed
from Canton at
4:50am - 10 minutes early – one
headed
North,
and the other
North East to
gather
fellow
skiers from the
four prearranged spots. It was a
normal bus trip for the way up to
KB - people catching a few more
ZZZ’s, some chatting, and some
taking in a bit of early morning liquid courage for the day.
Our lead bus driver (yea Rick)
took us on what he claimed to be a
short cut; poor guy had four women
telling him he was going the wrong
way the whole time. Well he was
right, and got his rightful praise
from all of us. We got to KB a little
later than planned, but everyone
quickly scattered to put on ski gear,
their costumes, and hit the slopes.
The events for the day were a
costume parade for those wanting
to take part in the contest, a group
photo, a poker run, basket raffles,
and a 50/50. Kissing Bridge donated a wrath of tee shirts, back packs,
a set of ski poles, and hats for us to
give away as door prizes as part of
the 50/50 drawing.
Thanks to
Debbie – she helped me work the
raffle table all day, and those of you
who came to visit with us through
out the day. OK – few takers on the
costume parade, and the group
photo didn’t get the whole group of
us – but it does show some colorful
characters with our group. Poor
Donna took a lot of grief for grabbing the plain banner, instead of
the event banner for the picture.
Thank goodness for photo shop J
Our king and queen of Ski with a
Heart On were Gary Johnson (the
judges loved his heart Scooby Doo
boxers and tie) and Shelli Snyder
– with her wild pink hair and plaid
school girl skirt. Thanks so much
to the KB staff for taking time to
be judges. We gave out the 50/50
– four gift baskets and the KB
donated items. Thanks again - to
the generous people that donated
the gift baskets, Kissing Bridge for
their support and donations, and
lending us the resort for the day to
make this happen. The grand
total for the event raised was
$1,743.50, and we will be working
with Three Trackers to help purchase a piece of equipment needed for their program.
Again, I can’t thank all of you
enough for taking part and helping make a difference – you did a
fine job.

a result of the fire, they had lost all

Mike Keagy, along with his wife
Michelle and daughter Courtney

January 30, 2011 to receive the donations from the CMSC racers. By the
following week and less than 10 days
after the terrible fire, Cockaigne’s ski

attendant after-school programs
were in operation! Many thanks to
all who donated time, equipment,
and cash!
The lifts are closed for summer, but not the fun and adventure...
By Paris Wolfe
By May, chairlifts are silent at ski
areas, but the fun continues. Sure,
many morph into golf resorts, but
most offer even more.
Perhaps the most exciting is
Holiday Valley Resort’s new Sky High
Adventure Park. When skiers can’t get
their adrenaline buzz from snow-covered, black diamond slopes, they can
get an energy blast at the Aerial
Adventure Park and Mountain Coaster.
“We have been a year round resort
since 1962,” says Marketing Director
Jane Eshbaugh. “The Sky High
Adventure Park makes the area more
appealing to the whole family. In addition, we have mountain bike trails,
golf, swimming, the spa and all the
things in Ellicottville offers for summer.”
The Aerial Park – a series of platforms connected by “bridges” – is
being built in a four-acre section of
woods adjacent to the Tannenbaum
slope. “Bridges” will be logs, hanging
chunks of wood, loops of rope and
more. Harnesses with locking lanyards
make the challenges safe.
The Mountain Coaster, built in the
woods next to the Spruce Line slope,
is a roller coaster in the mountains.
People ride up the mountain in a “car”
attached to rails. Then, the car follows
a zig-zagging, spiraling path down the
mountain. Handbrakes control speed.
The Mountain Coaster will operate
year ‘round, while the Aerial Park will
operate spring, summer and fall.
Sky High Adventure Park is just
some of the local fun. The town of
Ellicottville has a series of festivals
planned for summer. These include a
jazz weekend, rock n’ roll weekend,
Taste of Ellicottville, Fall Festival and
more. For dates and information visit
www.ellicottvilleny.com.
Things are busy closer to home for
CMSC members at Peak n Peek Resort
and Spa in Clymer, NY. In addition to
golf and spa, the resort has events and
special packages throughout the summer. It all starts April 16 with a wine
tour that includes two nights lodging
at the Inn, Saturday shuttle tour along
the Lake Erie Wine Trail with boxed
lunch and use of resort amenities. A
Murder Mystery Dinner is scheduled
for May. Then, cooking classes kick off
June 16 and continue on selected

the summer. Topics will include entertaining techniques as well as wine

SITZMARK [ SKI TRAVEL SHOW ISSUE ]
On the night of January 24, 2011,
the historic main lodge at Cockaigne
Ski Resort was lost to a devastating
fire. The building had been constructed as the Austrian Pavilion for
the 1963 World’s Fair, held in New
York City. At the conclusion of the
World’s Fair, the owners of
Cockaigne Ski Resort purchased the
building and had it disassembled
and moved to Cherry Creek, New
York in 1964. For more than 40 years
this magnificent wooden structure
housed many family skiing memories as multiple generations learned
to ski at this small, family-oriented
resort.
News of Cockaigne’s loss spread
quickly throughout CMSC, as the
Race Program was scheduled to race
at Cockaigne on Saturday, January
29, 2011. Nick Cirell, President of the
Highlanders Ski Club visited
Cockaigne on Tuesday, January 25,

is the Director of Cockaigne’s Ski

then did we begin to understand the
