European directives Directive for Explosive Atmospheres (ATEX) 94/9/EC Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) 2004/108/EC Low Voltage Directive (LVD) 73/23/EEC Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC General Aspects of Atex Directive & Markings The directive 94/9/EC (95) and 1999/92/EC (137), better known as ATEX from the French term ATmospheres EXplosibles, is a European Community Directive, which defines the minimum health and safety requirements for apparatus intended for use in potentially dangerous environments. The directive is adopted by the European Union (EU) to facilitate free trade in the EU of products to which the Directive applies. It conforms to the safety demands in essence by: • the application of harmonised specific standards; • the EC-type examination of products from a notified body, resulting in the appropriate certification; • the manufacture of the product under a quality management system approved by a notified body. The responsibilities are divided in two between the manufacturer and the end user: the first has to comply with the requirements of the ATEX 95 directive, the second must define the risk of its working environment and equipment and make an Explosion Protection Document, based on the requirements of ATEX 137 directive. In order to use electrical equipment in a potentially explosive atmosphere, such as combustible air-gas mixture or combustible or conductive dust, the environment must first be classified in accordance with standard EN 60079-10 (gas) and EN 61241-1 (dust) and with its related guide. This classification, which must be carried out by qualified and competent professionals, identifies the following characteristics, valid for equipment to be used in a given application: • the group of equipment; • the category; • the protection method; • the temperature class, or the maximum surface temperature. Definitions Explosive atmosphere A mixture of flammable substances in the state of gas, vapour, mist and dust with air; in which, after ignition, combustion spreads throughout the unconsumed mixture. Potentially explosive atmosphere An atmosphere that could become explosive either as a result of local and/or operating environmental conditions. The ATEX directive applies to products for use in this environment. 2 Explosive atmosphere and dangerous areas classification Dangerous environments are classified by zone, according to the risk generated by explosive gas or dust in the atmosphere. The use of electric motors is not allowed. Incidental presence: likely to occur during normal operation of the equipment. Accidental presence: unlikely to occur during normal operation of the equipment. EPL Equipment Protection Level Level of protection assigned to equipment based on its likelihood of becoming a source of ignition and distinguishing the differences between explosive gas atmospheres, explosive dust atmospheres and the explosive atmospheres in mains susceptible to firedamp. • Gb for explosive gas atmospheres having a “high” level of protection, which is not a source of ignition in normal operation or during expected malfunctions. • Gc for explosive gas atmospheres having a “enhanced” level of protection, wich is not a source of ignition in normal operation and which may have some additional protection to ensure that it remains inactive as an ignition source in the case of regular expected occurrences (for example failure of a lamp) Equipment classification Groups, Categories, Atmosphere, Type of protection, Temperature classes For a safe use of electrical equipment in a potentially explosive atmosphere the following information must be known in advance: • the environment in which the apparatus will operate; • the gas group; • the spontaneous ignition temperature of the gas mixture. These information lead to the following classification of the electrical equipment by groups, categories, type of protection and temperature class. Categories Each group is classified by categories, according to the level of protection the apparatus must have: Atmosphere (for group II – surface industries) Examples Of Gas Atmospheres The equipment belonging to the group II is also specified by the nature of the atmosphere and can be arranged into the following categories: G a mixture of air and gas, vapour or mist D a mixture of air and combustible dust 3 Gas atmospheres are further divided into 3 sub-groups, according to the severity of the environment: Group Danger rating II A Examples Low acetone, acetic acid, methanol, ethanol, benzene, ethane, methane, propane, toluene, xylene, combustible oil, kerosene, acetaldehyde, ethyl benzene, isoprene coke-oven gas, ethylene, ethylene oxide, ethyl ether, formic aldehyde High hydrogen, acetylene, water gas, carbon sulphur II B II C Note: a motor belonging to a particular group is also suitable for use in a lower group In IEC/EN 60079-0 a group III has been created for dusts. This is to allow the recognition of conductive and non-conductive dusts and flyings. The three categories are defined below. Group IEC 60079-10-2 Definition Description III A Combustible flyings solid particles, including fibres, greater than 500 μm in nominal size, which may be suspended in air, may settle out of the atmosphere under their own weight, can burn or glow in air, and may form explosive mixtures with air at atmospheric pressure and normal temperatures III B Non-conductive dusts Electrical resistivity > 103 Ωm III C Conductive dusts Electrical resistivity < 103 Ωm finely divided solid particles, 500 μm or less in nominal size, which may be suspended in air, may settle out of the atmosphere under their own weight, can burn or glow in air, and may form explosive mixtures with air at atmospheric pressure and normal temperatures Types of protection The IEC/EN 60079-10 standard classifies the dangerous areas, while the standard EN 60079-14 defines the compatibility between the protection method and the aforementioned dangerous zones. Permitted Temperature°C T1 T2 T3 T4 T5 T6 >450 300<T<450 200<T<300 135<T<200 100<T<135 85<T<100 450 300 200 135 100 85 For Dust environments Combustible dusts can form potentially explosive atmospheres when dispersed in the air; these hazardous areas can be found in a variety of industries such as agriculture, chemicals, plastics, etc. The selection of electrical equipment to be used in hazardous areas with dust shall be made by considering: • the type of dust: a cloud of dust around the machine or a layer of dust on it; 4 • the characteristic of the dust: conductive or non-conductive; • Ignition temperature of the dust: Tcl for a cloud of dust, T5mm for a 5 mm dust layer. Certifications B5N motors (gas) from 160 to 315 frames are certified by third body authority (TUV 11 ATEX 385428 X) the others sizes are self certified. This is the most common requirement among the industry today. The class F insulation system allows a temperature rise of 105K, measured by the resistance variation method, and a maximum hot spot temperature value of 155oC. The materials and the impregnation systems used make these motors suitable for use in tropical environments, for applications with high vibrations and for applications with high thermal variations. Option 100 Insulation class H can be provided upon request. Temperature rise compatible with class B Class B rise allows a maximum winding temperature rise of 80K under normal running conditions (rated voltage, frequency and load) with maximum ambient temperature of 40°C and altitude below 1000m a.s.l. Installation 1000 m a.s.l. The performance of standard motors is considered at a maximum height of 1000m above sea level (a.s.l.) with motors running in continuous duty, at nominal voltage and frequency. The following table indicates the maximum vibration grades with respect to the varying shaft heights. Motors can be supplied with either a special (B) vibration level on request. The instrumentation can have a measurement tolerance of 10%. Protective Treatment External Surfaces The standard painting process consists of epoxy vinyl-polyurethane paint: of a thickness used to ensure an optimum environmental resistance. Standard finishing paint colour is RAL 5010. Other RAL and MUNSELL colours are available on request. The special painting process, consisting of epoxy vinyl paint followed by poly-acrylic paint, is available on request.
