I
This Week
t’s hard to believe, but IAJE is only a few days away.
One of the big attractions of having the conference in
Manhattan is that folks from all over the country get
to check out legendary New York City clubs. To help you
plan your visit, Tad Hendrickson has compiled a list of
the best shows at the clubs and halls during IAJE week;
find it on page 11. We’ve also included a listing of the radio panel sessions that are part of the industry track overseen by Jazz Alliance International on page 7.
•••
It’s sad to see two more smooth jazz stations bite the
dust. Is the format overconsulting itself out of existence? It
certainly has gotten pretty homogenous, to the point that
even the computers at Mediaguide have trouble discerning tracks. Maybe it’s time to broaden the scope a little
bit beyond the safe ... and stale. There’s a panel called “Is
Smooth Jazz Still Really Smooth Jazz?” hosted by Ricky
Schultz at IAJE on Sat., Jan. 14; I’ll bet that will be a
point of discussion.
•••
Please encourage those you know in the business to
sign up at jazzweek.com. We hope to make a bigger impact in several areas: in radio, where more broadcasters
will have access; at retail, where buyers and store owners
will see what’s hot on radio; and among musicians, who
will have access to industry information.
With the larger circulation, we’ve added Devon Murphy as our advertising manager. As you plan your buys for
2006, please feel free to contact him at (866) 453-6401
extension 3, or at [email protected]. I’ll also be happy
to talk to you about it at IAJE.

Correction: In our Dec. 26, 2005 issue, we inadvertently left Steve
Rubin’s name off his Stolen Moments top 10 list. It was corrected in the
issues online currently. We apologize for the oversight.

Clear Channel Axes Smooth Jazz
Stations in Minneapolis and Fresno
C
lear Channel has switched the
formats of two of its smooth jazz
stations as of the start of 2006.
KJZI, Minneapolis, Smooth Jazz
100.3, has been reformatted as talker
KTLK, and will carry network programs from Rush Limbaugh, and later in the year, Sean Hannity. It joins
three other talk stations in the market.
Prior to the format switch, the station
stunted with tracks such as “She Talks
in Stereo” by ’80s college radio faves
Gary Myrick & The Figures, “Talk
Talk” by Talk Talk, and Dean Martin’s rendition of “Please Don’t Talk
About Me When I’m Gone.”
Fresno, California’s KEZL has also
dropped the format after 17 years. Hot
AC sister station KALZ will move to
96.7 from 102.7 on Jan. 5. No format
for the vacated frequency had been announced at press time.
A goodbye message from KEZL
is posted on the station’s website at
http://w w w.smoothjazz967.com/,
which said, in part, “Wow! What a
wonderful privilege it has been to serve
the community and offer the Smooth
Jazz 96.7 experience for the past 17
years! So many great artists and sponsors have allowed us to influence, entertain, and serve Fresno in many special ways.”
The format change leaves the radio
giant with 11 remaining smooth jazz
outlets, according to its website.
Both stations were part of the JazzWeek Smooth Jazz Album and Singles panels and will be dropped after
this week. JW

T
he Lousiana Superdome was the
site on New Year’s Day of Louisiana Rebirth: An Interfaith Celebration to proclaim the rebirth of New
Orleans and Louisiana.
One of the many musicians to provide tributes was trumpeter and Louisiana Cultural Ambassador, Irvin
Mayfield, who repeated the soulful
rendition of “Just a Closer Walk with
Thee” that he peformed at the Higher Ground Benefit Concert at Jazz at
Lincoln Center as a tribute to Mayfield’s father, one of over 1,000 New
Orleanians who lost their lives in the
tragedy.
“January 1st, 2006 marks a new beginning, a rebirth for our State and this
great city of New Orleans,” said Louisiana Lt. Governor Mitch Landrieu.
“This is a celebration like no other in
history, as it follows four months after being struck by the worst natural disaster in our nation’s history. In
this truly symbolic gesture of faith and
hope we want to recognize this American Tragedy, with a truly American

$25,000 Donated To U. Wisconsin
Milwaukee In Honor of Al Jarreau
MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Ford Motor Company Fund recently presented
$25,000 to the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee (UWM) Foundation
on behalf of musical stylist Al Jarreau during a ceremony at the UWM
School of Education. Funds will be
earmarked for the Thomas Cheeks
Scholarship Fund, which awards
scholarships to students pursuing degrees in teacher education.
“Education is the key to success,
and Ford is committed to supporting
initiatives that provide students with
access to resources that will help them
achieve their academic potential,” said
Sandra E. Ulsh, Ford Motor Company Fund president. “We are proud to
assist Ford Freedom Award Scholar
Al Jarreau in his efforts to make the
dream of obtaining a college education possible for students in his hometown.”
Jarreau designated the UWM
Foundation as the recipient of the donation as part of his selection as the
2005 Ford Freedom Award Scholar.
Earlier this year, Jarreau and songstress Ella Fitzgerald, the Ford Freedom Award recipient, were honored
for their contributions to the arts and
for using their talents to build bridges and promote unity throughout the
world.
“This award has taken on new
meaning,” said Jarreau. “Ford has given me an opportunity to reinforce the
value of education and enhance the financial resources made available to future teachers studying at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. After all,
their knowledge will be passed on to
our children.”

Jarreau impressed many with his
unique voice style and innovative musical expression. His career exploded
with his debut album “We Got By”
(1975), and a progression of successful albums earned him superstar status
and an international following. He is
the only singer ever to have won a Best
Vocalist Grammy in three separate
and distinct categories: jazz, R&B,
and pop.
“We are extremely proud of Mr.
Jarreau’s career accomplishments and
grateful that he selected UWM for
this honor,” said Dean Alfonzo Thurman, School of Education, University
of Wisconsin Milwaukee. “Because he
designated this award gift to UWM,
we can continue to educate those stu-
dents who have expressed a desire and
passion to teach future generations of
children.”
Now in its seventh year, the Ford
Freedom Award program supports the
educational programs, exhibits, and
community outreach initiatives of the
Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, the world’s
largest institution dedicated to preserving African American history and
culture. The museum is located in Detroit.

just sing and play – her vocals seldom stick to the usual melody and she’s even
more imaginative on piano. Last year’s A Walk In The Park was somewhat and
undeservedly overlooked, and hopefully a live in-the-flesh gig will sway those
not yet drawn in. It’s also a chance to see my favorite room in the city – the BBQ
is outstanding, the service civil, the sound great and the seating comfortable.
Definitely worth the trip.

EDMAR CASTENEDA
Sweet Rhythm
Sun., Jan. 15, 8:00 & 10:00 p.m., $35
NOT STRICTLY A jazz musician, Colombian harpist Casteneda has been turning
heads wherever, whenever, and in whatever format (he plays Latin folk music as
well Latin and straight-ahead jazz). Only 25 years old, he plays melody, bass and
harmony all at the same time. Your eyes see his fingers working, but the sounds
don’t always correspond because he’s doing things that simply defy explanation
or logic.
JOE MORRIS TRIO WITH KEN VANDERMARK
Tonic
Tue., Jan. 10, 8:00 p.m., $10
THOSE WITH A thirst for avant-garde improvised music, and who are going to
be around on Tuesday night, would do well to head down to Tonic for a rare
meeting between the hard-working Chicago reedist Ken Vandermark and East
Coast guitar hero Joe Morris, as well as Morris’ heavy drummer Luther Gray.
They’re doing one set only, before making room for a late set by Ravi Coltrane.
Kurt Elling
KURT ELLING
Birdland
Tue. – Sat., Jan. 10 – 14, 9:00 & 11:00 p.m., $40
THIS TALENTED AND entertaining jazz vocalist (and former divinity school student) is a known commodity to most of us. But his rise in popularity has meant
that he’s had to spread himself around by touring to the far reaches of the globe
or functioning as a musical ambassador in Chicago and other Grammy-related
events. Here’s a chance to remind yourself of the fact that he’s getting better and
better. He’s also due for an album, so maybe some hints of what the next one is
going to sound like will be offered. Afterwards, Lois Gilbert and JazzCorner.
com will be hosting a late night jam session on Friday and Saturday night.

$30-35
THIS GENERATION’S GUITAR god holds sway for a week at the iconic Vanguard.
Is a jazz visit to New York City complete without a visit to the Vanguard? Probably not. But, on the flip side, it’s been here 70 years, so it’s not like you haven’t
already gone there and been insulted by Lorraine. Seriously though, with Mark
Turner (sax), Aaron Goldberg (piano), Joe Martin (bass) and Eric Harland
(drums), it’s a hot young group led by a hot young player.

Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola
Tue. – Sun., Jan. 10 – 15, 7:30 & 9:30 p.m. (also 11:30 p.m. Fri. and Sat.), $30
DRUMMER NASH LEADS an accomplished but not particularly surprising quartet
(pianist Renee Rosnes, bassist Peter Washington and vibesman Steve Nelson)
through a two-pronged tribute. The room is stunning and the sound great, so
make the trek if this is up your jazz alley.
LINCOLN CENTER JAZZ ORCHESTRA WITH WYNTON MARSALIS
DETROIT: MOTOR CITY JAZZ
Keith Major/JALC
Wynton Marsalis
Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Rose Theater
Thu.-Sat, Jan. 12 – 14, 8:00 p.m., $30-130
WITH TICKETS RANGING from $30 to $130, this is not the cheapest gig in town.
The upside is that you’ll get to see this group on their home turf in the big room.
These nights will also feature Ron Carter, Curtis Fuller, Charles McPherson
and Marcus Belgrave paying homage to the Motor City’s many jazz icons.
RAVI COLTRANE QUARTET
Tonic
Tue., Jan. 10, 10:00 p.m., $12-15
THE PRODIGAL SON is playing at the convention as well, but here may be a chance
to cross this band off the to-see list with an eye towards doing something else.
With bassist Drew Gress, drummer E.J. Strickland and pianist Luis Perdomo, this group is the same working combo who did 2005’s excellent In Flux, so
chances are good that the group has taken it up a notch after a year with a lot
of work.

MCCARTNEY
Joshua Kessler/Savoy Label Group
Ravi Coltrane
Blue Note
Tue. – Sun., Jan. 10 – 15, 8:00 & 10:30 p.m., $20-35
THE CREATIVE AND stylistic thread between Jaco, Gil, John and Paul would
seem to be tenuous at best, but musical director Gil Goldstein is something of
a mad genius when it comes to arranging, so expect the unexpected. The Alist players in support are Chris Potter, Randy Brecker, Mike Mainieri, Richard Bona, Don Alias and small string section. This isn’t something seen around
town on a regular basis, and good seats fill up quick at the Blue Note, so show
up early (although try to avoid eating there).

WALLACE RONEY

Thu. – Sun., 8:00 & 10:00 p.m. (also 11:30 pm. on Fri. and Sat.), $25-27.50
RONEY CAN BE found playing around town on a regular basis in a variety of different settings. This will be his electric funk group (complete with a turntablist)
that was featured on 2005’s Mystikal, but without some of that album’s players (Geri Allen will not be on hand). The good news is that it’s only about two
blocks away from the Hilton, so a quick jaunt to the club is not out of the question. It’s also worth noting that there is a special IAJE Discount for 50% off
cover charge, second sets only except on Sat. You must present your IAJE credentials at the box office.

Edsel Gomez
Cubist Music (Zoho)
MAKING HIS DOMESTIC debut after three Brazilian imports
and several years as
a notable sideman,
Puerto Rican pianist Edsel Gomez
arrives with the
multifaceted debut.
As with the painting style, Cubist Music features
small motifs pasted
together to become
unique but generally organic tunes
that are in the post
end of post-bop. This is music where little melodies abound
like gifts under the tree: each one is unwrapped, played
with and then set aside for the next. Joined by an A-team
crew of former employers, Gomez has saxophonists David
Sanchez, Miguel Zenon, Greg Tardy and Steve Wilson as
well as Don Byron on clarinet and Drew Gress on bass. The
material can be a little discordant at times (“Harmolodic Collage” and “Ladybug”), but these moments are nicely
balanced by arching melodies (“Juan Tizol” and the elegant
“Empty House”). Cerebral but altogether winning, Cubist Music is an unexpected surprise that will start the New
Year off on the right note.
and Stewart has
taken it upon himself to transcribe
every Cannonball
Adderley solo ever
recorded. Stewart
has the requisite
post-Bird fluidity
and bluesy grit that
were such important facets of Cannonball’s
sound.
And while there is
no doubt about the
influence, Stewart’s playing should bring a smile of happy
recognition to Cannonball fans instead of grimaces of annoyance. Taking on a several Adderley favorites (highlights
are “Domination,” “Work Song” and the closing medley),
he’s backed by a solidly capable backing quintet from his
Tempe, Arizona, hometown. Certainly a good recording
for what it is.

Robert Stillman (continued)
pressionistic and often melancholy solo debut album has
little in common with either of the above projects; instead,
Stillman dwells somewhere between Chicago-style post
rock (think Tortoise or Chicago Underground) and the Bad
Plus’s willingness to take jazz ideas and twist them into
rock formats (or vice versa). The music is straightforward
with plenty of space where solos often carry the melody.
At the same time, there’s a nice laidback ambiance to these
moody and nuanced pieces that have a subtlety and drama
that are easy to appreciate. For people looking for music at
the edges of jazz instead of straight down the middle, Horses is a fresh breath of air.
