Hospital Record THE GRAPEVINE (Continued from Page 2) CHAPLAIN'S CORNER by George Bowles This is the month of new beginnings for many young people across our land, due to the fact that they have finished certain prescribed stages of their educational development. Some of these have been members of our own homes or the homes of close relatives. Some have been friends in whom we are interested. We think of these and even strangers who have experienced a sense of accomplishment through graduation. There is a certain joy in our efforts to be good well-wishers for all of these young people. It is likely that no one of us would find difficulty in naming individuals who have encouraged us along the way, especially in our educational development. Without these relatives and friends we might have cut the process short at some point which would have caused regrets in later years. These fine people were able to say the right word to encourage us to believe that we could accomplish a higher goal, even in the face of heavy obstacles. This is another reminder of the fact that we are indebted to our past, and especially to those who have helped us shape it. If we try to stay alert to our opportunities, it will be possible to find ways in which we can make new beginnings in the educational process much easier for young people we know. Financial assistance seems to be a common need among those who consider higher education, but not the only need. We may have no material aid to offer, but we can give encouragement and inspiration. niece of the late Dr. J. Albert Key and former Barnes Admitting Officer. Hospital Record 12 WARREN SIMONDS RETURNS FROM PERU PAULA RICHARDS WINS GODFREY TALENT SHOW Warren Simonds, Associate Director, has returned from South America with his family to reestablish residence in St. Louis. He took a leave of absence on June 1, 1955, to work with the A. S. Aloe Company in equipping an 850-bed government hospital in Lima, Peru. At that time he was Associate Director assigned to Wohl and Barnard Hospitals. Paula Richards (stage name for Paula Marie Theobold, IBM Key-Punch Operator until she resigned recently for a career in the entertainment field) sang with the professional air of a seasoned veteran on the June 4 Arthur Godfrey Talent Scout Show, and the applause meter registered 99 to declare her the winner against wellreceived competition. Mr. Simonds, after preparing for a career in the diplomatic service, decided to enter hospital administration. Upon graduation from the University of Southern California in 1950, he entered the Washington University Course in Hospital Administration. His internship and residency were served at Barnes, and after receiving his Master's Degree in Hospital Administration he was appointed Associate Director. The South American trip doubled as a honeymoon for the Simonds', since he and Mrs. Simonds were married just prior to leaving the states. Mrs. Simonds, the BARNES Paula was the talent presented by Dr. Norman Lotz, principal of the Riverview Gardens High School in North St. Louis County. It was Paula's first appearance on television, but she sang "Too Young" in a full, well-controlled voice with a rather wistful style. f So far Paula has appeared in "This Is It" on KMOX, and recorded a rather bluesy song: "The Devil Made a Fool of Me." former Betty Garrett, was an admitti| officer in Barnes for several years, anc was recruiting officer in the Barnes Hospital School of Nursing at the time of her resignation and marriage. ^^^ HOSPITAL 600 South Kingshighway St■ Lou is 10, Mi ssou ri A A
