LIVE & DIE FOR CC HIGH
A Testament To The Spirit And Tradition Of Catholic Central
Campaign Surpasses
Halfway Point!

advantage of the special characteristics of the land itself. The donated
property is heavily populated with
trees and contains 10 acres of wetlands. CC continues to work with the City of Novi
and the State of Michigan toward final approval.
John’s creative design is very compatible with the
contours of buildable land, and will prove to be an
impressive and functional building in a beautiful
wooded and watered setting. How appropriate that
the “new and permanent” home for CC is being
designed by a CC family member. John is working
hard to have a rendering of the new building in one
of the future issues of the “Aluminator.” ■
hat do you mean you haven’t heard?
The silent phase of the “Live & Die for
CC High” Capital Campaign has successfully passed the halfway point! The
Campaign, the most significant development program
in the history of any Basilian high school, has a goal
of $34 million to fund the construction of the new
Catholic Central campus to be located in Novi,
Michigan. The planning and behind the scenes work
has been going on since early 1998. CC has been
looking critically at its current location on Breakfast
Drive due in large part to the fact that so many current
students come from west of Livonia, and so few come
from east of Livonia.
Without the generous donation of over 60 acres of
land, located at Wixom Road and Grand River, by
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Pellerito, a move to a new campus
simply would not be possible. The Pelleritos’ gift
will allow CC to dedicate all the campaign gifts to the
construction phase of the program.
Mr. John Argenta ’58 is the project architect and has
been working closely with CC for several months.
The building will be a unique shape, and take

correct. Believe it or not, our own Fr. Richard Elmer ’46

Angeles, San Diego, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Austin,
Orlando, Ft. Lauderdale, Naples, Tampa, Sarasota, and

there is a large contingent of transplanted Shamrocks
in each of those cities, your answer would be partially

Campaign Secures “Challenge
Gift” To Inspire The “Troops”
Pat’s “Challenge” gift was made in large part to inspire
everyone to be a part of the Campaign. The silent phase
of the program has been extremely successful in securing gifts of $100,000+ pledged over a 3-5 year period.
However, for the Campaign to really be successful and
meet its goal, hundreds of gifts are necessary at that
level and lower levels. ■
campaign of this magnitude is rarely successful
without securing a multimillion dollar “lead gift.”
Mr. Patrick Nesbitt ’62, one of four National Campaign
Chairs, has committed to match, dollar for dollar, each
and every gift up to 10 million dollars! Pat’s extreme
level of generosity is matched only by the incredible
amount of time and effort he has already spent and
will be spending from conception – to construction.
Pat’s leadership has been greatly appreciated.

Coast To Coast
The Only Thing Missing
he “Live & Die for CC High” Capital Campaign
solicitation process is scheduled to conclude in
December of this year. Beginning in September, each
and every alumnus who has not yet been contacted
by Father Elmer will be sent an informative brochure,
a special campaign video and a request for financial
participation in the program.
Is You!
The key to the success of the Campaign is to garner as
much support from as many alumni, parents and friends
of CC as possible. Pledges to the Campaign may be
made over a 3-5 year period and may be structured in a
variety of ways. Again, we need everyone to do as much
as they can to help make this historic effort a reality. ■

Impressed by the priests who taught him at Catholic
Central, Fr. Mark Owen Lee joined the Basilian Fathers
in 1947. After receiving his B.A. and M.A. from the
University of Toronto, he was ordained a priest in 1957.
He was awarded his Ph.D. from the University of British
Columbia in 1960. He taught Classics at the University
of St. Michael’s College and the University of Toronto
until his retirement in 1995. On occasional leaves of
absence during those years, he lectured at schools in
Houston, Chicago, Rome, and in Oakland and Berkeley,
California.
For these reasons and many others, the University of
Toronto has conferred on him the degree of Doctor of
Laws, honoris causae.
Fr. Lee has also recently received a Ruby, an award from
the “Opera Canada Magazine” for his many contributions to the magazine and to opera in Canada. ■
Fr. Lee has taught over forty-five different courses, both
graduate and undergraduate, in Classics, comparative literature, art, music and film. He is, indeed, a man for all

Have you seen any lost CC alumni? The alumni listed below have drifted out of sight. Since we – and
we’re sure you – would like to see them at their respective upcoming reunions, please give us a hand.
We also want to ensure they make it into our upcoming 2003 Alumni Directory. Currently, these alums
are not receiving any information from CC – so they might miss out on more than reunions!

atholic Central lost a great friend last January with the
death of Salvatore Vincent Cipriano. Sal Cipriano served
Catholic Central in a variety of roles over the past twentyfive years. He was a coach, administrator, official, timer,
scorer, announcer, mentor and a friend to the coaches,
teachers, students and the Basilian Fathers.
He was also instrumental in the success of the athletic
programs at Our Lady of Grace, Our Lady of Sorrows,
St. Francis Cabrini and Bishop Borgess High School.
At Catholic Central, he helped with the Football, Baseball
and Basketball programs, as well as being Director of our
Grade School Basketball Tournament and a member of the
Catholic Central Golf Committee.
In 1989, Sal received the CYO Award for twenty-five years
of service, and in 1990, was inducted into the Catholic High
School League Hall of Fame.
Mr. Cip was always generous with his time and energy.
A humble man, his acts of kindness often went unnoticed.
Like countless trips to nursing homes, deliveries for Mealson-Wheels, reading to abused children, and weekly visits to
people in the hospitals.

Tribute To Sal Cipriano
most often heard comment
which best describes Sal is,
“He was a class act.” He
lived his life as an example
for all of us to follow.
The whole Catholic Central

always-positive attitude,
his Brooklyn accent and his
generous help.
The Catholic League slogan
is “More Than Good Sports – Good People.” Sal Cipriano
certainly was a Good Person.
He is survived by his wife, Elinore, sons Michael, Nicholas,

FORMER COACH FOLEY ’42 DIES AT 77
Bill Foley went to Catholic Central from 1938-42. He was a quarterback on the
Football team, and a Boxing champion for Fr. French. He was a Marine during
World War II, and afterwards played college Football at Wayne State University.
He returned to Catholic Central in 1952 and coached the Varsity Basketball team
through 1971. His career record in Basketball was 184 wins – 97 losses. Bill’s
1960-61 team won the Class A Championship. He led the Shamrocks to the
Catholic League Championship in 1961 and 1968. The 1968 squad also won the
Detroit City Championship.
Bill’s Football record at Catholic Central between 1956 and 1970 was 69 wins and 44
losses. The big year was 1960, when Catholic Central won the First Division Catholic
League Championship and appeared in the Goodfellow Game at Tiger Stadium.
Bill Foley was a man who could fire his team up to great heights and drive the
opponent nuts with his trick plays and strategy. Yet, he was always humble, helpful
to coaches, and patient with young, awkward athletes.
Bill was fun to be around. He always had a joke or story, or was planning some mischievous prank. I recall one coaching
clinic in Grand Rapids. We were returning to our room, and as we walked down the hallway, Bill would walk into a room
full of coaches with a football in his hand and ask the question, “How do you snap the ball – straight or sideways?” This
set off loud and boisterous arguments. As the room erupted in chaos, Bill would stroll out with that twinkle in his eye and
laughter under his breath to enter yet another room.
Maybe that twinkle isn’t darkened after all. Look at the heavens, that new bright star could be Bill, smiling down on
Catholic Central.
Bill is survived by his wife Barbara, sons Steven, Michael, William, Brian and John, and daughter Carol. He is also survived
by seven grandchildren and one great grandchild. ■

W
e are extremely proud of our Cross Country, Varsity Football and Varsity Hockey Teams.
They all won the State Championship in their sport.
After a slow start, the Varsity Football Team proved to unbelievers that they were a talented,
capable and well-disciplined team. The State Championship came to them almost on the last
play of the Final game. Coach Tom Mach called the final play, a play they had just put in the
last week of the season. Ryan Wrobleski, the Most Valuable Player of the game, caught the
winning touchdown pass from QB Tom Jacacki. The Division 1 State Championship was won
24-21 over Utica Eisenhower on Saturday, November 24, 2001, at the Silverdome in Pontiac, MI.
CC’s 2001 Varsity Football Team couldn’t
be stopped at Division 1’s Districts,
Regionals, and finally the State
Championship over Utica Eisenhower.

Mentions went to Jeff Davis (defense) and Steve
Nelson (defense). The following made the “Detroit
