Rancho Cordova is lucky enough to have a local chapter that provides expanded agricultural opportunities encompassing science, business, and technology, in addition to production farming. Cordova FFA provides training to and helps to promote the success of Rancho Cordova’s future leaders. FFA stands for Future Farmers of America, but in 1988 the organization changed its name to National FFA Organization to better reflect this breadth of opportunity. The Cordova FFA Chapter was established in 2010 when Mr. Bret Harden students about the benefits of the FFA program. On October 4th, Harden and Rossiter accompanied their chapter officers on an overnight field trip during which the new officers learned about their positions and received training by state and regional FFA officers to be the best leaders they can be for the Cordova chapter. Our 2014-15 Officer Team is Here! We would like to introduce you to our chapter’s new officers: Paige Leahy is leading us this year as president; Carmen Short is taking charge as our vice president; Mckenzie Emery is our new secretary; Ben Romero is our new treasurer; Kaylie Tickner is our reporter; Karlo Gabriel is our sentinel; and our newest addition, Chelsea Hurley, is serving as historian. Our advisors are Mr. Harden and Miss. Rossiter. We have decided to come together as one and make this year better than the previous. We are dedicated to our jobs and want our chapter to be successful this year. A Blast in Tahoe! In August, our officer team went up to Tahoe and camped for two days during which they did a variety of team building exercises and came closer together as a group; we want our team to feel more like family. The team also had the chance to become closer with our amazing advisors, who taught us many leadership tips and other ways to run our chapter more effectively. Toward the end of the retreat, we went to Lake Tahoe, took official photos of our officers, and then went for a swim. We had an amazing time and many opportunities that we took advantage of to bond and become a closer FFA family. H Family Fun at Sun River First-in-the-Nation Student Privacy Church’s Harvest Fair Carnival Bill Approved by CA Assembly Sacramento Region, CA (MPG) - California’s Assembly today approved a first-in-the-nation online privacy measure, authored by Senate Leader Darrell Steinberg, which prohibits uses of students personal information for profit. Senate Bill 1177, the Student Online Personal Information Protection Act (SOPIPA), passed unanimously on a 71-0 vote and heads back to the Senate for concurrence. “My goal is to encourage technological innovation while protecting kids’ privacy, and this bill doesn’t trade one goal for another, it achieves both,” said Steinberg (D – Sacramento). “The industry currently operates without restriction except for the ones that they unilaterally deem appropriate and that is unacceptable. Kids are in the classroom to learn.” Companies providing online services to aide classroom teaching often require students to create accounts that capture contact data and personal academic information such as grades, disciplinary history, and chat-records. In some instances, companies are mining data from schoolchildren beyond the needs of the classroom, including how many rooms a student had in their home and how many parents they lived with. Some apps marketed to teachers and kids could track a child’s physical location. SOPIPA would end targeted advertising on K-12 websites, services, and applications. It also prohibits operators from using any information gained from the use of their K-12 site to target advertising on any other site, service, or application. The bill also prohibits creating a profile on a student, unless that profile is used for clear educational purposes. It also prevents companies from selling student data and limits disclosure of student personal information in common sense ways. The only current restrictions on the use of student data by online educational technology products are contained in the privacy policies that they themselves deem appropriate. Surveys of these privacy polices reveal provisions that remove a company’s liability for misuse of data, tell users that policies are subject to change at any time, and that companies are allowed to disclose data however they want. This bill encourages continued innovation in education-technology and is supported by parents, administrators, school employees, scholastic H publishers, and teachers. Today, these programs enable 10,000 tutors to help 22,000 students at more than 800 libraries and other locations across the state. At the same time, Sacramento Public Library became one of the first libraries in the state to offer Adult Literacy Services. Sacramento Public Library is proud that one of our Adult Literacy students, Steve Tafoya, has become one of the faces of a statewide campaign to publicize this important work. California Library Literacy Services has produced a video about Tafoya’s story. “People who can read, they just take that for granted,” Tafoya says in the video. “It just comes natural. But for me, it’s different. I always wanted that.” A 13-year Army veteran who achieved the rank of sergeant, Tafoya first walked through the doors of the Southgate Library in February 2012. He met Library supervisor Christy Aguirre, who referred him to Adult Literacy Services. After many hours of dedicated work with tutor Anna Ramirez, he now reads so well that he’s in his fourth semester of classes at Sacramento City College. Tafoya, Aguirre and Sacramento Public Library director Rivkah K. Sass also appear in a second video promoting statewide literacy services. “We’re a nation of second chances,” said Sass. “The library is the place to provide that second chance.” Some important statistics about literacy needs: • 36 million American adults need literacy help, including more than 4 million Californians, according to the nonprofit ProLiteracy. • The most recent National Assessment of Adult Literacy found that 13 percent of adults in Sacramento County—more than 140,000 people—lack basic literH acy skills. My wife and I do. Last Sunday at church, a few people came up to me and asked what my position was on the ballot regarding the Rancho Cordova Measure H. They were confused because the way the ballot was printed by the County, it shows me being both for and against the measure! Almost all of us have tried at some time or another to be in two places at once but it doesn’t work. Just like trying to be two places at once, trying to be for and against any measure on the ballot at the same time doesn’t work either. -ORAM PM · There are some very good reasons why I do support Measure 10 COLLEGE PARKWAY, FOLSOM, CA 95630 H and they will be discussed later. AN EVENT SATURDAY, OCTOBER 11, 2014 - 3:00 11:00 RAIN SHINE The ballot shows “ARGUMENT IN FAVOR OF MEASURE H” (#1) and then the supporters list: Robert J. McGarvey, Guy Anderson, Kevin Mickelson, Karen Anderson, and Zak Ford. Next should have been the “ARGUMENT AGAINST MEASURE H” (#3) and its supporters: Steven Vincent and Lynn Keay. Then should have come our “REBUTTAL TO ARGUMENT AGAINST MEASURE H” (#2) and its supporters: Robert J. McGarvey, Mark Baxter, Z a k F o r d , a n d G e o rg e Burnash. What happened was “ARGUMENT AGAINST” (#3) and “REBUTTAL TO ARGUMENT” (#2) were flipflopped. “NO REBUTTAL TO ARGUMENT FOR MEASURE H” was filed. Trying to correct the confusion on the ballot would have been simple if the County had reprinted the ballot and sent it out to Rancho Cordova voters. However, the County decided not to correct its error so my column in the “Grapevine Independent” is one way to try to show what should have been printed on our ballots. I received a call from a resident of Rancho Cordova who lives not far from me and he was unhappy about the sales tax money not being specifically dedicated to police, roads, traffic, repairs, etc. His reasoning was that if it goes into the general fund, it could be spent on anything. Some of the money will be spent on roads, police, traffic, repairs, and/or it will be a financial cushion that will allow us to continue to operate in the black if the economy goes flat and we need to start cutting costs again like we have in the past. The bill that the City of Rancho Cordova has to pay every year to the County is the Revenue Neutrality Tax that will continue to increase no matter what the economy does. The government code that was put into effect in January 1993 is the Revenue Neutrality Tax. Having the flexibility we would have with the sales tax revenue will help if we need the money for that. If the tax is dedicated to something specific, the City would have to find other ways to pay that bill. That would probably be slowing down progress or stopping it completely. Our Revenue Neutrality Tax bill will continue to increase for 14 years. I am glad we were able to become a city when we did. If we hadn’t been successful then, we would probably still be just part of the County’s unincorporated area. The tax we had to agree to pay for 25 years is what it cost us to be able to vote on cityhood. It was worth it! October can be weird (especially when it is an election year) and you must be cautious about other entities. You may see, hear, or read strange things in October. Mark Twain for instance said, “October is one of the peculiarly dangerous months to speculate in stocks. The others are July, January, September, April, November, May, March, June, December, August, and February.” H From Vice Mayor Bob McGarvey, God bless, and see you next time. B Oak Ave. Pk wy. He implemented an informal exam. While his wife was in the kitchen cooking dinner, the husband in a normal, conversation tone asked from the den, “Honey, what’s for dinner?” She didn’t answer. So he moved closer to the kitchen and repeated the question; no response. Then he walked right up to the kitchen door, about ten feet away. “Honey, what’s for dinner?” he asked. Nothing. Now he placed himself directly behind her: “Honey, what’s for dinner?” The wife whirled around on her heels and shouted, “George, for the hundredth time, I said we are having chicken!” Often, others listen just fine and we are the ones who are hard of hearing. What a beautiful phrase: Hard of hearing. We don’t say “hard of running,” if someone has an injured knee, or “hard of seeing” if someone wears glasses. We don’t say “hard of chewing” if someone has missing teeth or poorly fitted dentures. But we use “hard of hearing” all the time. Sometimes the hard of hearing have had an injury, nerve damage, or disease. It’s the result of age or overexposure to loud noises. Yes, the teenager that cannot hear you because his earbuds are turned up to excruciating levels, becomes the middle-aged man who cannot hear you when you tell him what’s for dinner. Then of course there is the deafness of the Spirit - it’s hard to hear God speak. Maybe God used to move within your heart, he once whispered in your ear, or stirred in your soul - or maybe you have never had such a sensation of God speaking at all. God might speak to others, or you used to know what it was like for God to speak to you, but now, you’re stone deaf. So you do all the talking; you do all the praying and asking of questions (“What’s for dinner?”). You do all the testing of God’s failing abilities; but it’s not God who is deaf. You might be the one with “eyes that cannot see, ears that cannot hear, and a heart that cannot understand.” You are hard of hearing. The troubling thing is, when someone’s hearing begins to erode, his or her life gets louder, only magnifying the problem. Haven’t you noticed that? The TV volume is cranked up to the unendurable decibels of a jet fighter. Warning bells and alarms are ignored, so they keep blaring. Communication becomes difficult, a game of escalating voices. Hearing anything becomes impossible. Bring that scenario into the realm of faith. While we want God to shatter his perceived silence… with thunderclaps, earthquakes, and firestorms, why GOT LOCAL NEWS? should he speak to us over the noise of our lives? Why would he add to the commotion? His voice will only get lost - and it does - in the dissonance that surrounds us. We have to get quiet to hear his “still, small voice.” We have to “put on our listening caps,” as our elementary school teachers told us, to hear what God has to say. My friend David Beavers says it impeccably: “Along life’s way, you lose you. Your life gets covered, buried, and numbed out with addictions, distractions, medications, and busyness of all kinds. If you don’t believe what I’m saying, if you don’t think you’ve lost the capacity to feel your own life and to hear God speak, spend the day alone, without a phone, without a book, or a computer. There, listen to and observe the insane, obsessive, cyclical and compulsive chatter that drives you - inside and out. It is nothing more than noise, and noise is the problem.” So, you might not be hard of hearing at all. It could be the pandemonium within and without; the sound and fury that have been absorbed into your heart, mind, and very soul. We have to turn down the volume around us, not to hear ourselves think, but to hear anything – even the Maker of the Universe – when he gently speaks our name. Snyder It was a week when everything went just the way I had planned. It is hard to express your feelings when something like this happens because it rarely happens. The infamous To-Do-List from the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage was completed to her ecstatic satisfaction. That never happens. In fact, I finished it in time to have a little of “Me Time.” I sat on the back porch with a steaming hot cup of coffee and enjoyed an evening with nothing to do. I am not sure how long I sat there, but my coffee was just as hot as it was on my first sip. I do not know how my wife does those things. I have never enjoyed a cup of coffee more. I had an appointment across town and in traveling across town I never hit one red light. I think that should go into the Guinness book of records. It has never happened to me before and I was reveling in the deepest kind of satisfaction I have ever known. I got to my destination 20 minutes early. I love early. After paying all my bills for the week and balancing my checkbook, I had $100 left over. What in the world, do you do with $100 left over after paying all your bills? It did not take long to come up with a solution. I decided to take my wife out for supper on Friday night at her favorite restaurant. It was a glorious night on the town and the service at the restaurant was superb. Never have I enjoyed a more wonderful time on the town. The steak was done to a perfect T, just the way I like it. The waitress kept my coffee cup filled to the brim. All through our meal, neither cell phones rang nor did we receive a text from anybody. Now seriously, how often does that happen? I checked several times to make sure my phone was still on. I sat back and decided to enjoy our anonymity. It is good to just chill together. As we came near the end of our delectable evening repast, I was about to mention to my wife what a tremendous week we were having and then... Then, I woke up. It was all just a dream. A good dream, but a dream nevertheless. Why is it dreams never come true? Why is it that my dream life is so much superior to my actual life? No wonder as a person gets older they want to spend more time sleeping. I think I am just about there. For a brief moment, I experienced what a perfect week would look like, even if it was just in my dreams. A perfect week is not when everything goes our way, because, if everything goes right then you know something is wrong. Call it pessimism if you will or maybe just a dash of reality. It is when things go wrong that I begin to understand what life is all about. I begin to understand that nothing is perfect. And, if nothing is perfect, then neither am I. I like that. The only perfect person at our residence is my wife, and I have her word on that and she never lies to me. Demanding perfection is a rather foolish thing. If I demand perfection from someone, they in turn are going to demand perfection from me. That is more stress than I care to live with, especially at my age. After over four decades of marital bliss, I have made an astounding discovery that has made my life so much more pleasurable. It took me a long time to come to this, but I sure am glad I have. A positive path for spiritual living Senior Minister/CEO Unity of Sacramento Host, Design Your Life on UnityOnlineRadio.org on myself trying to be perfect in everything I did. Then, I got married and all of that went away. It was a struggle at first, but I came to one astounding conclusion that has changed my life and brought me to a point of chilling out for the rest of my life. In our home only one person needs to be perfect. That one person is not me. What a blessing it is to realize that you are not perfect and you do not have to live up to that standard of perfection. I can be goofy, make mistakes and act silly and nobody cares. All those years of trying to be perfect were wasted. Now I have come to the place where I have acceded to the fact that my wife is perfect. I gladly anoint her as Queen Perfection in our humble Castle. All of the burden now rests upon her. She does not need to worry; I am there to support her in that aura of perfection. The nice thing about all of this is, she does not need much help from me. It is almost like I am retired for the rest of my life with nothing else to do. The burden of perfection does not rest upon my shoulder. Oh yes, the checkbook. After looking at it while awake, I discovered I was $100 overdrawn. Solomon understood this when he wrote, “All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the Lord weigheth the spirits,” (Proverbs 16:2). Everything does not have to go right for me to rejoice in the goodness of the Lord. Brown Jr. signed the nation’s first statewide ban on single-use plastic bags, SB 270, aligning state law with ordinances passed by a growing number of local governments in California to reduce plastic waste. “This bill is a step in the right direction – it reduces the torrent of plastic polluting our beaches, parks and even the vast ocean itself,” said Governor Brown. “We’re the first to ban these bags, and we won’t be the last.” The legislation, authored by Senator Alex Padilla (D-Pacoima), prohibits grocery stores and pharmacies from distributing single-use plastic bags after July 2015 and enacts the same ban for convenience stores and liquor stores the following year. It will also provide up to $2 million in competitive loans – administered by CalRecycle – to businesses transitioning to the manufacture of reusable bags. Thus far, over 120 local governments in California have passed ordinances banning single-use bags in some fashion, with widespread support from community and environmental groups. SB 270 is supported by many of these same groups, along with local governments, businesses and labor organizations. “I applaud Governor Brown for signing SB 270 into law. He continues to lead our state forward with a commitment to sustainability. A throw-away society is not sustainable. This new law will greatly reduce the flow of billions of single-use plastic bags that litter our communities and harm our environment each year. Moving from single-use plastic bags to reusable bags is common sense. Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. Governor Brown’s signature reflects our commitment to protect the environment and reduce government costs,” said Senator Padilla. “The California coast is a national treasure and a calling card for the world, helping us attract visitors and business from around the globe. Removing the harmful blight of single-use plastic bags, especially along our coastline and waterways, helps ensure the kind of clean and healthy environment we need to have a stronger economy and a brighter future,” said Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins. “SB 270 is a win-win for the environment and for California workers. We are doing away with the scourge of single-use plastic bags and closing the loop on the plastic waste stream, all while maintaining – and growing – California jobs. As we further develop our green economy, SB 270 will be a model for balancing the health of the planet with the preservation of people’s livelihoods,” said Senate President pro Tem-elect Kevin de Leόn, a joint author of the bill. “For nearly 10 million Californians, life without plastic grocery bags is already a reality. Bag bans reduce plastic pollution and waste, lower bag costs at grocery stores, and now we’re seeing job growth in California at facilities that produce better alternatives,” said Californians Against Waste executive director Mark Murray. “California is the first state in the U.S. to ban the most ubiquitous consumer item on the planet, in an effort to drive consumers towards sustainable behavior change. Data from the over 127 local plastic bag bans has proven that bans are effective at reducing litter and changing consumer attitudes, and have refuted industry’s claims of apocalyptic impacts on jobs and poor communities. A state plastic bag ban saves taxpayers the huge amount of money spent on litter cleanup, and protects the environment,” said Clean Seas Coalition and Seventh Generation Advisors director Leslie Tamminen. “SB 270 is a great victory for all of California. We’ve seen locally that plastic bag bans lead to cleaner water and healthier wildlife, keeping trash off our beaches and out of our creeks. The success of bag bans in our local communities has empowered state legislators to make the right decision for the health of California’s waterways. Governor Brown’s signature of this statewide bag ban is an important moment for our state, demonstrating that California is once again willing to take the lead on important environmental issues,” said Save the Bay executive director David Lewis. Brown Jr. Oppose Proposition 47 and Sheriff Scott Jones will publicly request that the Board of Supervisors adopt their joint resolution opposing Proposition (Prop) 47. Called the “Safe Communities and Schools Act,” Prop 47 has qualified for the November 2014 ballot. The initiative claims to make neighborhoods safer, reduce prison and jail populations, make schools safer, reduce government waste, help find jobs and housing for offenders and protect public safety. Scully and Jones will provide statements on why Prop 47’s claims are unfounded and will NOT protect public safety, including: • It would re-classify a number of straight felony and wobbler offenses to straight misdemeanors, making up to 10,000 felons eligible for resentencing and/or subsequent release from county jails and state prisons. • Many inmates that would be District Attorney Jan Scully eligible under this proposition were denied resentencing under three strikes reform because they were found to be a current danger to society. • Prop 47 only prevents resentencing if the inmate is considered to be a current danger to commit murder or sex offenses; not assault or robbery or other violent offenses. • The projected reduction to “Under Public Safety Realignment, many convicted non-violent, non-serious, nonsex offenders are already under county supervision, “said Sheriff Jones. “Prop 47 will add to the over-crowding of our jails and provide no reimbursement for the additional costs of housing misdemeanor inmates.” Scully states, “I stand in solidarity with Sheriff Jones and all of our local police chiefs in opposing Prop 47. If passed, this dangerous initiative will only increase the burden on our local criminal justice system, further reduce sentences and increase H the risk to public safety.” Source: Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office CALL 773-1111 TO ADVERTISE American River Ranch Farm Stand Featuring fresh, seasonal, local and organic vegetables and fruit American River Ranch 2140 Chase Drive, Rancho Cordova (right next to Hagen Park) Earn $200 per month for just a few hours delivery work per week! www.soilborn.org Saturdays 8am to 1pm CALL 773-1111 t c e f r e P e Th ! n o i t a n i b Com California’s prison population and projected savings to fund other programs will likely not be realized; as those actually serving prison sentences for these non-violent offenses in many circumstances have violent prior offenses and should not be resentenced. Hudson, County Executive. Calls are answered 24/7 and cover a wide range of County services. When the system went live, a few hundred calls and requests a day came in. Since then, the numbers have increased to more than 4,000 calls in service requests a week! The 311 Connect system allows residents and businesses to report an issue three ways: by phone, online on the web, or with the free 311 Connect phone app. Calls are the most frequent, but online and the app are used as well. The app is great when you’re out on park trails; you can snap a photo of an issue such as illegal dumping, and report it on the spot. Find 311 information on the County’s home page, at www.saccounty.net. 311 Connect helps you get answers and submit service requests for non-emergency issues, including: Abandoned vehicles Animal issues - stray, deceased Emergency housing conditions - no water, utilities, unstable building, surfacing sewage Occupied out building Abandoned shopping carts Curb, gutter or sidewalk repair Culvert/pipe repair or cleaning Drainage problem Missed garbage collection service Graffiti Illegal dumping - garbage, trash Potholes Tobacco - selling to minors Ditch cleaning Street light issues Street sign down Tree trimming in public Right-of-way The next time you see a broken street light in the County or any of the other services listed, don’t hesitate to use 311 Connect. The Lancers declawed the Cougars, 2-0. Photo by Rae Lynn Flippo EL DORADO, CA (MPG) - After losing its first Sierra Valley Conference contest early last week, the Cordova High School boys soccer team knocked off Union Mine, 3-0, on October 1st. The Lancers (2-1 in the SVC, 11-3 overall) and Diamondbacks battled for field position throughout most of the first half. Cordova’s midfielders were able to outduel the D’backs’ midfielders, setting up the first goal for junior forward Anthony Acosta, going 1-on-1 with Union Mine’s goalie in the box. Acosta won the battle, as he squarely booted the ball into the net in the 27th minute for a 1-0 lead. Alexis Vazques had an assist on the goal. “I think the guys were over pressing a little bit (to score in the first half), and started to overthink things,” said Cordova head coach Eric McCahon. “It was important for us to find ourselves tonight.” Cordova expanded its lead to 2-0 in the second half when junior midfielder Luis Aguilar scored off a corner kick in the 55th minute. “He’s a special player,” said McCahon of Aguilar, who is a three-year varsity starter. “He’s one of those guys who can make everyone around you better. He can beat you with the pass. He can finish like he did tonight.” Aguilar scored his second goal in the half in the 70th minute of the game to seal the win. Tom Romanyuk, a senior midfielder, recorded an assist on the play. “That second goal was huge,” McCahon said. “To Union Mine’s credit, they kept us at bay. The boys started to loosen up, and we got another (goal). I think the burden came off their shoulders.” Lancer goalie Juan Ramirez had three saves in the game. Galt 2, Cordova 0 The conference road opener was played on September 29th. “(The game against Galt) was a very physical, emotional game with Galt,” McCahon said. “We struggled offensively.” Members of this year ’s Cordova squad are Ramirez, Mitchell Lavielle, Alex Casal, Romanyuk, Abraham Gamez, Bernardo Valdez, Jose Trejo, Acosta, Vazques, Luis Farias, Antonio Garcia, Movses Avagyan, Victor Flores, Eder Gamez, Fernando Vasquez, Pedro Garcia, Aguilar, Vladyslav Guzevattyy, Jacoby Good and Pedro Flores. On Monday, Cordova posted a 2-0 win over El Dorado in an SVC home game at Lancer Stadium. Details of the game will be in the next issue of the Grapevine Independent. Cordova played at Liberty Ranch on Wednesday in another SVC contest. The Lancers continue conference play next Monday, October 13th at Rosemont, then at Galt on Wednesday, October 15th. A WEEKLY SPIN AROUND COLLEGE FOOTBALL STATE BACK IN THE SPOTLIGHT Red-hot Bulldogs host Auburn in a pivotal SEC West showdown AUBURN AT MISSISSIPPI STATE It’s another huge showdown in the SEC West. Mississippi State, fresh off an impressive win over Texas A&M, welcomes another top-10 opponent to Starkville. State’s Dak Prescott has been masterful operating Dan Mullen’s version of the runbased spread offense. Consider the following numbers: Prescott ranks second in the SEC in yards per passing attempt (10.1) and is averaging 91.0 rushing yards per game. That’s an impressive combination. Auburn’s Nick Marshall also knows a thing or two about making plays with his arm and his legs. The senior threw for 207 yards and ran for 119 while accounting for four touchdowns (two passing, two rushing) in the Tigers’ dominating win over LSU Saturday night. Marshall probably has a bit more talent at his disposal, but Prescott will have the crowd on his side. Mississippi State by 3 USC AT ARIZONA Arizona is an unlikely 5–0 after rallying to beat California — thanks to a Hail Mary on the final play that capped off a 36-point fourth quarter — and stunning Oregon last Thursday night. Rich Rodriguez is getting it done with a redshirt freshman quarterback (Anu Solomon), a true freshman running back (Nick Wilson) and a veteran receiving corps that features some Mitch Light under-the-radar stars. The Wildcats, an afterthought Athlon Sports nationally just a few weeks ago, are now a legitimate Executive Editor threat to win the Pac-12. USC must regroup after los@AthlonMitch ing to Arizona State at home on a Hail Mary on the final play of the game Saturday night. Not long ago, Steve Sarkisian’s team was 2–0 with a win at Stanford on its résumé; now, the Trojans are 3–2 with losses at Boston College at home and to an Arizona State team playing with its backup quarterback. The locals aren’t pleased with their new coach. Arizona by 6 Mississippi State quarterback Dak Prescott has thrown 13 touchdowns with only two interceptions in 121 passing attempts this season. a very talented offensive team that has a ton of weapons at the skill positions. Ole Miss has been outstanding on defense en route to its 5–0 start. Alabama had some success moving the ball — the Tide had 396 yards and averaged 5.3 yards per play — but scored only one offensive touchdown. The Rebels will need a similar effort from their defense to win at Kyle Field. Texas A&M by 6 This was looking like the Pac-12 Game of the Year … until Oregon lost at home to Arizona on Thursday and UCLA lost at home to Utah on Saturday. Despite the recent — and surprising — setbacks, there is still plenty at stake for both teams. Oregon has a win over Michigan State in its back pocket and will have several opportunities for more quality wins to impress the College Football Playoff Committee. The Ducks, however, must solve their issues on the offensive line and defense if they want to remain in the national title hunt. UCLA appeared to break through with its dominating win at Arizona State two weeks ago, but the Bruins reverted back to their early season (underachieving) form in the loss to Utah. Quarterback Brett Hundley will need some help from his supporting cast if UCLA is to remain in the Pac-12 South race. Oregon by 6 TEXAS AT OKLAHOMA The Red River Rivalry has lost a little luster with Texas’ recent difficulties, and a shorthanded Longhorns team that is in the midst of a complete culture makeover figures to struggle with the powerful Sooners. Of course, we thought the same thing last year before Texas shocked OU 36–20 — and this was the same Oklahoma team that went on to beat Alabama. The Sooners limp into Dallas on the heels of a loss at TCU, but it’s still tough to find many weaknesses on what could be the most talented team of Bob Stoops’ tenure. It might take another impassioned Matthew McConaughey pep talk — or a total implosion by the Sooners — for Texas to hang with Oklahoma. Oklahoma by 14 OLE MISS AT TEXAS A&M There’s no time to rest in the SEC West. Ole Miss, fighting a hangover from its epic win over Alabama, makes the trip to College Station to battle Texas A&M. The Aggies aren’t quite as good as we once thought — they were fortunate to beat Arkansas two weeks ago and then lost handily at Mississippi State — but this is still Mississippi State’s Dak Prescott was nearly flawless in the Bulldogs’ 48–31 win over Texas A&M, passing for 259 yards, rushing for 77 and accounting for five touchdowns. … It was just another night in the Pac-12 featuring a QB with five touchdown passes and a game-winning Hail Mary. In the Devils’ shocking 38–34 win over USC, backup Mike Bercovici went 27-of-45 for 512 yards and five TDs, including a 46-yard answered prayer to Jaelen Strong on the game’s final play. Oh, and USC hadn’t allowed a passing TD this season. … Cal’s 60–59 win over Washington State was a late-night Wild West shootout featuring two fearless gunslingers. Wazzu’s Connor Halliday set the Division I yardage record with 734 yards on 49-of-70 passing, with six TDs. Jared Goff, 1. Todd Gurley, RB, Georgia The Bulldogs have leaned on their Big Dawg in recent weeks, and Gurley has responded with a combined 371 yards and five touchdowns on 53 rushing attempts in wins over Tennessee and Vanderbilt. Gurley also added a 50-yard pass out of the Wildcat formation in the win against Vanderbilt on Saturday. 2. Dak Prescott, QB, Mississippi State Prescott shined on a national stage, throwing for 259 yards and two touchdowns and adding 77 yards and three scores on the ground in Mississippi State’s 48–31 win over Texas A&M. He will duel another dual-threat star on Saturday when Nick Marshall and Auburn come to town. 3. Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon The Ducks’ dream of a perfect season ended last Thursday, but Mariota did his part. The junior quarterback threw for 276 yards with two TDs and no INTs in Oregon’s loss to Arizona. 4. Amari Cooper, WR, Alabama Cooper was held under 100 yards for the first time this season, but he still had a team-high nine catches for 91 yards as Alabama fell from the ranks of the unbeaten with a loss at Ole Miss. 5. Jared Goff, QB, California Looking for a dark horse? Goff is averaging 373.2 passing yards per game; ranks fifth nationally with 10.4 yards per attempt; and has thrown 22 touchdowns and only three interceptions. His team is off to a surprising 4–1 start with the only loss coming on a Hail Mary pass by Arizona on the final play of a 49–45 loss in Tucson. WEEKEND ON TAP: 30 KEY GAMES OREGON AT UCLA PRIME TIME PLAYERS HEISMAN WATCH the winning QB, was 37-of-53 for 527 yards and five TDs. … Known earlier in his career for his running prowess, TCU’s Trevone Boykin completed 20-of-38 passes for 318 yards and two scores to lead the Horned Frogs to a 37–33 win over Oklahoma. … The QBs from Mississippi stole the headlines, but Auburn’s Nick Marshall also enjoyed a productive Saturday. The senior threw for 207 yards and two TDs and added 119 yards rushing and two scores on the ground in the Tigers’ 41–7 win over LSU. … Rutgers won its first Big Ten game, holding on for a 26–24 victory over Michigan. Gary Nova, the Scarlet Knights’ much-maligned QB, threw for 404 yards with three touchdowns and — most important — zero INTs. … Kentucky tailback Jojo Kemp rushed for 131 yards and three TDs — including two during a fourthquarter comeback — as the Wildcats rallied to beat South Carolina, 45–38. Bo Wallace, QB, Ole Miss His final numbers weren’t necessarily overwhelming, but Ole Miss quarterback Bo Wallace willed the Rebels to the biggest win in their recent football history, a 23–17 comeback victory over Alabama. Wallace finished 18-of-31 for 251 yards and three second-half TDs, including the go-ahead 10-yarder to Jaylen Walton with 2:53 remaining. “He just played so solid,” said Rebels coach Hugh Freeze. “On that last touchdown, that ball was right where it needed to be for us.” BYU at UCF (Thu) Washington State at Stanford (Fri) USC at Arizona Alabama at Arkansas TCU at Baylor Washington at California Louisville at Clemson LSU at Florida Duke at Georgia Tech Indiana at Iowa Toledo at Iowa State Oklahoma State at Kansas ULM at Kentucky Middle Tennessee at Marshall Houston at Memphis Cincinnati at Miami (Fla.) Johnson’s Yellow Jackets are 5–0 overall and 2–0 in the ACC after beating Miami on Saturday, while Virginia improved to 4–2 (and 2–0 in the league) with a 24–19 victory over Pittsburgh. Oregon has now lost three of its last six Pac-12 games dating back to last November, and two of the Ducks’ wins during this stretch came by seven points or less. This run of mediocrity follows a run in which Oregon won 33 of 35 league games, with all but three wins coming by at least 10 points. Utah State recorded its first win at BYU since 1978 and did so with backup quarterback Darrell Garretson taking the snaps. Filling in for the injured Chuckie Keaton, Garretson threw for 321 yards and three TDs to lead the Aggies to a 35–20 win that snapped the school’s 17game losing streak in Provo. Could LSU finish last in the SEC West? With much of the division flying high, the Tigers have crashed to earth, losing at Auburn 41–7 in a game that was never in doubt. Les Miles’ team is now 0–2 in the SEC, has serious issues at QB and on defense, and has a schedule without any sure wins remaining.
