As you can see by the cover, another “big” anniversary is going on too, so we thought we’d celebrate together - see inside the story about Mike Harrah and Original Mike’s, and our upcoming 10th Anniversary Bash. There’s more about our anniversary too, but I just got back from Cave Creek, AZ where we had our 7 year party, and while I don’t exactly remember all of it, the staff tells me we had a good time. I want to thank everyone there for their hospitality, and now, for good or ill, I have a load more Facebook friends. So much for productivity, but on the plus side, I now know what my cousin had for breakfast this morning, and how she felt about it. But back to our 10th anniversary....oh, wait, lots of people have been asking how I hurt my knee, because they’ve seen me out there on crutches (or with a cane when I need to hold a drink). No I didn’t lay down my pink Vespa, don’t worry she’s ok. No, I was partying in the Hollywood hills with Charlie Sheen, ya know the usual late evening bender. We're on day 3 of a crazy Monopoly game, (cause that’s how we roll) and he's all pissy cause he's got crap properties like Oriental Ave. and St. Charles Place, and I'm sitting pretty with Park Place and Boardwalk. Duh, Winning! So on the third round of Charlie having to pay me like $2,000 in rent, he slams down his miniature thimble playing piece, picks up his phone, and 30 seconds later in walks 2 hot little babes, with next to nothing on (I guess they were the kids' nannies) and one’s got this suitcase....I don't know what was in that thing, but when the babe accidentally drops it on my knee, it’s like there are bricks in there! So, that's the story (oh, and I also had surgery for a torn meniscus). Man, Charlie Sheen. Tiger's blood my ass. He needs to spend a weekend with some Bikers! W So, about our 10th anniversary....ah screw it, it’s 10 years publishing the mag. 120 issues as of last month, big deal. What’s it mean to celebrate 10 years of publishing a motorcycle magazine, in 2011? Well for me it means being a survivor. We’ve seen many talented people leave the industry, but mostly we’ve seen the culling of the herd. If you’re still here, you’re one of the good ones, and you’ve proven yourself worthy of still making a living in motorcycling. Either that, or you’re too dumb to know you should have gotten out a year ago (damn self deprecation, you are the bane of my existence). Surviving also means having a good sense of humor (all attempts above notwithstanding), rolling with the changes, and most of all having the balls to take chances when fear is the predominant emotion. Don’t worry, both are great motivators. Does 10 years also mean, never having to say your sorry, like your great grandfather telling dirty jokes at the family picnic? No, it’s more like being able to say your sorry, without having to first worry about your badass image. But it also means that if sorry ain’t good enough, then to hell with ya and have a nice day. Life’s too short, my uptight friend...as for our competition, hell I could fill a page with their names and stories, but many of them are gone now. Many thought they could do this, only to find that it took more than glossy paper and a scruffy beard. One competitor we lost, and in the worst way possible, was Kimmy Chapman with Biker Information Guide. Kimmy was the rarest kind of competition - one I was happy to have. She and I always got along and liked each other, and respected each other. She rose above petty industry squabbles, and there was and is no one in her organization that can take her place. She will be sorely missed. Please see our small tribute to Kimmy later in this issue. We started QT years ago to do something REAL. To get out of the cubicles and into the wind. I can remember the moment like it was yesterday, though now it’s been about ten and a half years. I’m sitting in a bar in Atlanta, hoisting a beer with my V.P., and he says, “So Chris, why do you want this promotion?” He takes a swig off his beer and I say, “Well actually Greg, I don’t. And in fact I’m hoping you’ll help me make a graceful exit from the company.” I caught him in mid-sip, and he just sort of froze there, like someone from a sitcom, the rim of the beer bottle still on his lips. What followed was some of the best and most gracious treatment I’ve ever seen in Corporate America, and in the weeks after that, some of the scariest moments of my life. Let me backtrack a little, though not too much, since I have told this story before and I don’t want to bore too many of you (if you’ve been reading us for 10 years, now’s the time to skip to the roadtest or something, I won’t mind). I was in a big office building, having relocated from California to Atlanta for a big promotion with a consumer electronics firm, in a cubicle, in a tie, in a serious rut and slowly dying. But I was day-dreaming of the next hop-up I’d do to my Road King, the next piece of chrome I just had to have, the next road trip I’d take with the WHORE’s (Westside Harley Owners & Riding Enthusiasts) and the next big rally I’d get to. Point is, after 16 years in the industry, I was burnt out. Not everyone needs to be passionate about how they earn their living, but I did, and still do. So I left that sweet corporate gig (I don’t even want to tell you the perks we had back then, you’ll just cry) and started to look at what I’d do next. And that’s when the fear started to hit. And it came in waves, bigger and bigger each time. One of the many cliches about this kind of thing is, you close your eyes and just jump. OK, fine. But exactly where do you jump? All I knew when I quit the corporate world was, I wanted to do something in motorcycling. I knew that was my passion, and hoped that somehow I’d find something that I could direct all my skills and guts and heart into. Well of course the rest is history, I started the mag in April of 2001, after coming back home to Southern Cal., back to my old haunts and favorite rides. We started with some great local advertisers and some dedicated staff, and expanded to Northern Cal, and then into the Southwest. We also started the Northwest edition, an absolutely dominant force with my Dad at the helm in Washington state, and the Rockies and Midwest editions, which have been through rough times with poor management, but are now coming back with great people and a new vision for the future. No regrets? Hardly. Any man who says he has none is either lying, or not terribly introspective. Let’s just say I don’t regret the regrets - everything we choose, and everything that happens, teaches us something. We move on, and try to make it better. We try to do something of quality in our lives, so that the good looking corpse we leave behind isn’t our only legacy. Hope this hasn’t been too tedious. If you’re still a fan of QT, come on out on May 21st to Original Mike’s for our big party - it’s FREE and it will be fun, the rest is just gravy. Oh and to whomever brings me the oldest copy of our mag you can find, you’ll get a special gift, as well as my appreciation for sticking with us as long as you have. Thanks, and we’ll see ya out there, CD QTCASW_APR11.qxd:Layout 1 5/1/11 11:05 AM Page 4 QTCASW_APR11.qxd:Layout 1 5/1/11 11:06 AM Page 5 QTCASW_APR11.qxd:Layout 1 5/1/11 11:06 AM Page 6 6 MAY 2011 Critical Depression Ails Nevada: A “Shot” of Freedom Will Help! Commentary By TigerLily “I want the troops to return to a country which has more freedom than when they left.” Janice McKay, BOLT, of NC In an unprecedented victory for Nevada’s motorcycling and tourism industry, Nevada’s Helmet Choice Bill, SB177, passed through the Senate Transportation Committee on April 14, 2011 – but not without drama. For weeks, SB177 was the most popular Senate Bill, overwhelmingly supported by the People of Nevada. The Bill allows for helmet choice to motorcyclists who are at least age 21, have taken an approved motorcycle training course, and have at least one year experience. The training requirement will not apply to motorcyclists already endorsed. The Bill was sponsored for the fifth time by Republican Senator Don Gustavson and co-sponsored by Democratic Senator Mark Manendo, who is also a Committee member. Committee Chair, Shirley Breeden, kept her promise to motorcyclists and brought the Bill to a hearing on March 10, 2011. The hearing provided overwhelming data in support of SB177. But Breeden held the Bill hostage for over a month while moving more than 30 other bills – none of which can stimulate the economy. Breeden called SB177 for a vote at the April 14th deadline with hours notice. At the vote, Breeden allowed Committee Vice Chair, Senator Michael Schneider, a long time politician to speak first. Schneider did not hear most of the March 10th hearing as evidenced by his early absence at that meeting and his ill-informed statements. Instead, it appeared Schneider relied only on personal prejudice to scorn the Bill, call motorcycles dangerous, and label motorcyclists as potentially astronomical burdens to society. Travis Barrick, Esq., former candidate for Nevada State Attorney General, said about Schneider, “He shows a reckless disregard of the facts and the truth and evinces a religious devotion to the nanny state.” After Schneider’s no compromise, “NO-to-freedom vote,” Breeden and Co-Sponsor Manendo sided with Schneider to vote NO. Mandendo stated, “Maybe they need to be [at least age] 25 and have five years of experience.” Senator Elizabeth Halseth, junior Senator and Committee member, was the most outspoken advocate of SB177. Halseth voted YES to the Bill despite the vociferous opposition of senior colleagues. In the end, the Bill passed by a vote of four-to-three, and as of this printing SB177 awaits a Senate vote. If passed, the Bill goes to the Assembly, where activists anticipate greater opposition. How did SB177 make it past the Committee – unlike the previous eight attempts? Activists believe it was due to Nevada’s economy, a better collaboration among Nevada MROs, and QuickThrottle reporting. David Stilwell, founder of Guerrilla Lawfare believes, “The one thing I think we did differently this time, is that We the People were considered pushy, annoying, and to some, even nasty. Guess what? Political correctness doesn’t work, BOLT-like assertiveness does.” For up-to-date information please contact [email protected]. POLARIS ACQUIRES INDIAN® MOTORCYCLE Polaris brings world-class engineering, manufacturing and distribution to Indian’s rich American heritage and historic brand MINNEAPOLIS (April 19, 2011) — Polaris Industries Inc. (NYSE: PII) today announced the acquisition of Indian Motorcycle. The business was acquired from Indian Motorcycle Limited (“IML”), a company advised by Stellican Limited and Novator Partners LLP, U.K. Private Equity firms. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. “We are excited to be part of the revitalization of a quintessentially American brand,” said Scott Wine, CEO of Polaris Industries Inc. “Indian built America’s first motorcycle. With our technology and vision, we are confident we will deliver the classic Indian motorcycle, enhanced by the quality and performance for which Polaris and Victory are known.” With this acquisition, Polaris adds one of motorcycling’s legendary brands to its strong stable of Victory cruiser and touring bikes. Indian will operate as an autonomous business unit, building upon the potent combination of Polaris’ engineering acumen and innovative technology with Indian’s premium brand, iconic design and rich American heritage. “We are delighted to have reached an agreement with Polaris. Polaris will utilize its well-known strengths in engineering, manufacturing, and distribution to complete the mission we undertook upon re-launching the brand in 2006: harness the enormous potential of the Indian brand,” said Stephen Julius, chairman of Indian and managing director of Stellican. “Polaris is the most logical owner of Indian Motorcycle. Indian’s heritage brand will allow Polaris to aggressively compete across an expanded spectrum of the motorcycle market.” QTCASW_APR11.qxd:Layout 1 5/1/11 11:06 AM Page 7 QTCASW_APR11.qxd:Layout 1 5/1/11 11:06 AM Page 8 8 MAY 2011 By Gary Mraz Mike grew up in middle class Whittier and like most California kids in the early sixties loved surfing, playing music (drums) racing cars, motorcycles and boats. In 1969, just after high school he had enough money saved up to buy a one-way (Standby) ticket to Hawaii, traveling with only a duffel bag and his surfboard. He was going to surf for the rest of his life. Big Mike soon realized his workaholic personality just didn’t fit the Surfer dude lifestyle and soon came back. He started a framing company in the early seventies called Harrah Construction Company, starting with a 10,000 sq. ft. house he built with a helper on weekends and evenings after working as a framing contractor on other jobs. Never afraid to get his hands dirty he is in the mix on every endeavor, even today. From one custom house to One Broadway Plaza, Big Mike builds anything and everything including race cars. In fact Big Mike is now constructing the tallest superstructure in the history of Orange County in Santa Ana, California. His passion for racing, boats, cars, speed ski racing and riding motorcycles has also grown through the years. A professional S.A.G. (Screen Actors Guild) card holder since 1997 as a major motion picture helicopter stunt pilot and a daredevil sportsman, Mike drives alcohol fueled dragsters, has professionally raced G.N. (Grand National) Drag Boats,he’s a speed ski racer and holds 2 National and one world record, and pilots his own Cobra TAH1P military helicopter as a stunt man in Hollywood action pictures such as “the Hulk” and “The Siege”. Big Mike epitomizes the American Dream: dream big, work hard and never say never...as a soldier in the army of the Lord and his resiliency paid off. He has had some major hard falls but gets right back up for the fight. Through financially hard times and Helicopter crash that almost killed him (more on that later), Big Mike stands tall. QTCASW_APR11.qxd:Layout 1 5/1/11 11:06 AM Page 9 MAY 2011 Mike’s favorite motorcycle is a custom built V8 powered “Vanquish” built by Mike Kelly, a Boss Hoss Dealer and self proclaimed gear head from Marco Island, FL. The definition of Vanquish is “total domination” and the ability to crush one’s opponent. One look at the Vanquish V8 motorcycle shows that the name is fitting. The bike is powered by a custom built all aluminum 427 cubic inch World small block. “It’s not everyone that has the stomach for 600 horsepower bike with 550 ft. lbs. of torque or the wallet to spend 6 figures on one,” said Mike Kelly, “but when they call you Big Mike, you’re 6 foot 6 inches and weigh....well let’s say just north of 300 pounds with 20” arms...you tend to like big things.” When Big Mike called Kelly, an instant understanding and connection was clear, this bike was to be ultra-custom. Custom paint, custom camshaft, custom fitted alligator seat, and a very big shot of Nitrous Oxide just in case something special pulled up next to Big Mike. Needless to say, Mike has vanquished all possible threats on the street and at the track with his brutally fast V8 bike. The bike is geared to run 120 mph in first gear at 7,000 rpm and will hit 200 mph in second at 7,000 rpm. Ask Big Mike what his favorite machine is and he will tell you “my V8 bike.” Mike tries to have a Motorcycle at his out-of-state construction projects whether it’s his Harley Electra Glide Bagger in Hawaii or a Bourget T6 Retro in Arizona. Big Mike is a rider through and through. Mike is also a Builder of dreams. One of his personal favorites is his restaurant Original Mike’s, which he and his construction company - Caribou Industries - built, at 100 S. Main Street in Santa Ana, California. Resurrected from the ground up, this gutted, boarded up and condemned building for over 20 years was an Automobile sales and service building, once served as a “Buick” dealership, originally built in 1919. In late 1923 it became the first horseless carriage motorcar company in Orange County. Today it is known as Original Mike’s which hosts numerous events from corporate parties, Bike night, Police and Fire, Make a Wish Foundation, Boy’s and Girl’s Clubs, Orange County High School of the Arts, and many others of “Big Mike” Harrah charity sponsored events. Mike likes to give back to the community and the children of Orange County. He say’s after all “Today’s Youth are Tomorrow’s Future”. 9 QTCASW_APR11.qxd:Layout 1 5/1/11 11:06 AM Page 10 10 MAY 2011 Original Mike’s has become a well known motorcycle destination hosting such rides as the Ride for Autism and Ride the Coast. With two indoor performing arts stages and one outdoors, three bars, two private dining rooms, one with a wine cellar, a cigar Humidor and 2 wood burning fireplaces, all surrounded by the largest 360° Jumbotron Mega T.V. on the west coast. Considered by many Orange County Bikers to be the ultimate sports bar, which may be an understatement. The huge facility has a 1,500 person capacity with a massive parking lot. Big Mike received his certificate of occupancy on September 10th 2001. The next day America changed forever but Big Mike’s resilience paid off again and he celebrates original Mike’s 10th anniversary bash with his mottos “Start the Party” and “Go Big or Go Home”. Yes he is Santa Ana’s largest commercial developer and is currently building Orange County’s tallest structure at 37 stories. He has over 4,000,000 sq. ft. of buildings. Yeah, he looks like a big scary biker but truth be told, most big scary bikers love to be Santa Clause at Christmas. Big men usually have big hearts. In 2000 Big Mike got involved with the Orange County High School for the Arts (OCHSA). He was blown away by the talent of the kids he met during a tour of the Los Alamitos School and took their school campus and future expansion problem to heart. The school had the rug pulled out from under them at the last minute when the City Council decided that their expansion would create too much traffic. Mike purchased a building for 4.5 million and retrofitted the schools expansion plans to fit it. He put up all his own property and additional collateral for a 16 million dollar construction loan and then brought in a 191-man Caribou Industries construction crew to renovate the building. Right in the middle of the project Mike had a near fatal helicopter crash flying from Reno, NV. He broke his back, both legs; both feet; punctured a lung and dislocated a shoulder. The accident couldn’t have come at a worse time, if the school wasn’t ready to open in September it would lose state funding, since Mike had a $16 million construction loan in his name, it would have ruined him. But even from his hospital bed he made sure the school opened on time. Orange County’s most talented students are now able to pursue their dreams because of Big Mike. Whether sitting in on drums for Righteous Brother Bill Medley or on his custom Vanquish, California 502 HP Boss Hoss V8, custom Bourget motorcycle or building the tallest building in Orange County, “Big Mike” dreams big, works and play’s hard and looks forward to a long Bike ride every Sunday morning. Assemblyman Chris Norby, R, from Fullerton who represents the 72nd Assembly District is sponsoring AB-695. This bill that would exempt a driver 18 years of age or older who has completed a motorcyclist safety program or who has held an M-1 endorsement for over 2 years from wearing a safety helmet. ABATE of California applauds and thanks Assembly Member Norby for his support on this issue and for his convictions that this is a choice better left to the motorcyclists of the state. In addition to AB-695, ABATE of California is also pursuing legislation to end discriminatory motorcycle only checkpoints, which serve no valid safety purposes and only serve to proliferate biker profiling and to target a select group of the population based upon manner of transportation and lifestyle choices, such as mode of dress. AB-1047, sponsored by Assembly Member Kevin Jeffries, R, Lake Elsinore, is a bill that is supposed to address ending motorcycle only checkpoints. It is ABATE of California’s position is that motorcycle only checkpoints are not only discriminatory but that they unconstitutional as well. While the stated rationale of such checkpoints is allegedly for safety purposes, such checkpoints are often used as means to force otherwise law abiding citizens off the roadway for purposes of intelligence gathering about their activities, checking VIN numbers for stolen bikes or running noise checks, all non-safety issues. Additionally, it appears that revenue enhancement is also a factor due the amount of ticketing and seizure of motorcycles that have occurred during these motorcycle only checkpoints. The Supreme Court has ruled many times that any roadway checkpoint that has general crime control as its primary purpose is patently unconstitutional and that it is further is a violation of the Fourth Amendment protections against unreasonable search and seizure. ABATE of California also applauds and thanks Assemblyman Jeffries for his support on this issue and for his courage and convictions in sponsoring this bill which will end such discriminatory and unconstitutional violations of our rights. ABATE of California also believes that safety attempts by the various associated state agencies involved with motorcycle safety should instead focus on awareness campaigns, rider training and education, and safer highway construction. Public probably can’t really tell the difference between a 1968 Electra Glide and 2011 Road King as it rumbles by. It’s an American classic, like hamburgers and fries, short skirts and roller-skates. American as apple pie, the King is ablaze with chrome. With Its huge headlamp nacelle, dual running lamps and whitewall tires the Road King is big, bad and as iconic as a ‘57 Cadillac. The Electra Glide Sport reincarnated into the Road King in 1994 and never looked back. Baggers are biggest selling motorcycle segment and the king of baggers…the Road King. Its classic styling defines what riding a Harley-Davidson all is about. So what can possibly be that different about such an iconic motorcycle? Really everything is different because this year Harley-Davidson tosses in the whole enchilada called the Power Pack as standard. A beefy 103 ci. twin cam 1,690 cc engine is standard equipment. This engine completely changes the bike; its far more appropriate for an 800 lb. motorcycle. Also now, ABS is standard and it improves braking and stopping confidence. In fact cruise control and security are also standard features. The six-speed transmission offers relaxed highway rpm and 50 mpg. The 130/90/16 front whitewall balances nicely with the 180/65/16 rear. I have always been a big fan of the leather belt buckle saddlebags. Adding to the overall vintage styling the hidden quick release snaps they are easily accessed. Harley also touts a lower, more comfortable redesigned seat. I decided the perfect test ride would be a run along the California coast, visit a few piers along the way and a stop Hilltop Park in Signal Hill. Navigating the tiny side streets, maze of surf rats and bikini’s will provide ample opportunity check out John Q. Public’s reaction. I roll by Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier then head down ocean Blvd to Second Street through the quaint little beach town of Belmont Shore. Over the bridge to PCH and head south to Seal Beach. Main Street takes you straight down to the Seal Beach Pier. Built in 1906 the pier became heart of the “Jewel City” amusements resort. A roller coaster was shipped down from San Francisco and 50 giant lamps flashed changing colored rainbows on the water for night swimming. At that time women beachgoers were required to wear stockings above the knee, but the girls at Seal Beach were just painting their legs. Called the”Plague Spot” by outraged local clergy, Seal Beach is Bikini heaven today. The second largest Pier in California, it was ripped apart by a storm in 1983 and local residents helped fund its repair. Ruby’s restaurant at the end of the pier is a great place to watch a sunset or a raging storm. There always parking for bikes and Main Street is full of bars, restaurants and buzzing with activity on weekends. QTCASW_APR11.qxd:Layout 1 5/1/11 11:06 AM Page 19 MAY 2011 Back to Hilltop Park I gaze over the largest city in Los Angels County and the second largest port in the world and reflect on Road King’s Legacy. With the six-gallon tank and fly-by-wire throttle introduced in 2008, coupled with a completely new frame design implemented in 2009 and the Power Pack as standard, all these improvements combine for a thoroughly modern 2011 Road King Classic. I got a chance to hit the open freeways and settle into the redesigned seat. It is lower and actually very comfortable. The cruise control works fine but does operate differently with the flyby-wire throttle. Grabbing the throttle and turning it down or off does nothing when in cruise control. You have to either tap a brake or turn the cruise off with your left thumb. Also, the cruise control does not work over 90 and under 30 mph. Finally getting home that evening I hit Frisco’s for a bite and a cold one. Sure, to the average man on the street my ride could be circa 1968 and that’s the beauty of the new 2011 Road King - and that’s the very reason why this Classic is still King of the Road. As we have all come to know and appreciate with great anticipation, the PreRally Days did not disappoint. Hacienda’s Kickstart Party with The Van Halen Tribute Band and Chester’s Backstage Biker Bash featuring Gretchen Wilson, kicked off the 15th Anniversary of Arizona Bike Week! Saturday’s 7th Annual Bike Week Bash at Buddy Stubbs was a huge success. In fact, I think it was not only their biggest, but their best ever. And of course, bull riding, the builder showcases, vendors and live music took care of business all week long in Cave Creek. I don’t know about you guys, but I happen to think that this year’s event was one of the BEST EVER! First and foremost, can I get a collective shout out to Mother Nature and her cooperation? She bestowed upon us quite possibly the best ten days of weather that I can remember in a long time! With the exception of the record breaking heat on Friday (April Fool’s Day), and you know what I am talking about, the week was perfect! When the Hamsters organized their first bike week run, they didn’t expect the pun in calling it “the Hamsters Dry Heat Run”. Even still, generally it was great riding weather, the nights were just right, and NO jackets required! There were clearly more vendors present than there has been the last couple of years. I really liked the Burn Out Pit and the shows that those guys put on! The stuff those guys do on bikes is sic! Crazy sic! I was very impressed with the overall organization of the vendor village and it seemed that the crowds overall were much bigger this year as well. I mean, on the couple of rides that I participated in which ended back at WestWorld, I was totally blown away by the number of bikes that were in the two lots each time I came back or after any of the concerts. I swear there must have been as many as 10,000 bikes at any given time. AZ Bike Week promoters gave an early (but fairly accurate) estimate of 52,000 people passed through the gates, up 5000 crazy bikers from last year. That’s NOT 10,000 each day for five days. They have a new ticketing system where your ticket is scanned so they know how many people actually came to Bike Week. I was very surprised to see how many bikes were entered in this year’s Custom Bike Competition! There were over 30 bikes that entered with I believe about six different classes. It amazes me every year the creativity that comes from you guys who build, thanks for sharing it with the world. Keep doin what you’re doin! As each year’s event approaches, I always tell myself, this year I’m gonna do ALL the runs, but it never happens. Any of you do that? I’d like to know if there are people who do a run every day. I heard our Southwest Editor did a run every day for nine straight days in 2008 when there were even runs on Monday and Tuesday. Obviously, you can’t do them all since there are multiple rides to choose from on some days. If you are someone that does a ride a day, my hat is off to you! This year, I did the T-Bar Trail Ride, a can’t miss event, the Hamster Dry Heat Poker Run, and the Torch Ride, which I do every year. I’ve yet to do the Wednesday Children’s Run that Buddy Stubbs handles, but I hear that is one of the highlights of the week, mostly because of the route, which runs through most of Verde Valley. The T-Bar Trail Ride had an incredible turn out and is always a big hit. They QTCASW_APR11.qxd:Layout 1 5/1/11 11:06 AM Page 22 22 do however, need to figure out a better way to do the lunch because the last couple of years it has really been kind of a cluster %@#$! It takes WAY TOO LONG!!! This year, the Hamsters, a group made up of some the best builders we know like Arlen Ness and his boys, Paul Yaffe, and others, unveiled their Dry Heat Run. It had a nice route that started from Paul’s Shop in Phoenix, went to Cave Creek, then Greasewood Flats and finished at WestWorld. The huge turnout blew the minds of the organizers and we were told they filled the ride to capacity. Finally, the Torch Ride, which is one of my highlights of Bike Week. It is Arizona’s ONLY escorted ride and as always was a HUGE success. Early counts show they registered over 3,000 riders with usually 15-20% more that just go along for the ride without paying the registration. That’s too bad because all that money goes to the Special Olympics. Another mainstay of ABW is the Miss Arizona Bike Week Pageant. This contest brings out some of the finest ladies Arizona has to offer. Congratulations to this year’s Miss AZ Bike Week, Jenae Gargana! The competition was awfully tough this year! Going into the show, you couldn’t have pulled a favorite out above the others. Everyone has their favorite part of Bike Week. For some, it’s the opportunity to have friends come in from out of town and enjoy the festivities with you. For others, it’s all about the rides, still others like the vendors. For me, and a lot of you, it’s all about the parties and the CONCERTS!!! This year’s lineup was one the best we’ve had in a long time! Since we are going to do a concert review for you in detail next month, I’ll just recap some of the highlights. Wednesday was Skid Row, I did not make it out but I heard that they played everything you wanted to hear, sounded great and everybody enjoyed the show. Thursday featured Warrant and was awesome. They, too, played everything you wanted to hear, sounded great and were the perfect way to top off the TBar Ride. Friday Heart took the honors of being the best show of the week, hands down - maybe even the best show ever at ABW. Heart blew it off the charts. Their presence and sound has not lost a step in nearly 40 years!! Every single song sounded as good as it did the very first time I heard it – even the encore of Led Zeppelin tunes was freakin’ hot! Saturday’s Finale with Buckcherry rocked the house. I was pleasantly surprised with their set list and how they sounded. What was there not to like? Absolutely one of the best Bike Weeks we’ve had in some time. Only 335 days til the 16th Annual Arizona Bike Week. Let the countdown begin. A PAID MEMORIAL? Unfortunately, the week started on a very sad note and ended with very heavy hearts. On Saturday March 26th we lost a very dear part of our family and community, Kimmy Chapman. For those of you who knew her, you know she would have wanted us to do exactly what we did. Remember her during the week as we celebrated the event she helped create and then end the week by celebrating her life and the contributions she made to the bikers of Arizona and Arizona Bike Week. There was much ado about having the celebration at Westworld and that some of Kimmy’s friends would have to pay admission into Westworld in order to attend her celebration. I felt the promoters should have the opportunity to explain why they didn’t wave the gate fee that Sunday afternoon since there is no gate fee after 3 pm anyway. The gist of our conversation went like this… it would have been too difficult to rearrange the band and ride schedule to have the celebration after 3, so that wouldn’t work. They also realized about 90% who attended the celebration already had a pass into Westworld. The promoters of ABW decided to make a very nice gesture. Money from the one day passes that were purchased after 1 pm will be donated to the Kimmy Chapman Memorial Fund. While a few did pay at the gate to attend, they also got to see the concert and participate in the day’s events and should feel good about making a donation to help Kimmy’s family. Also, the contribution of the tent, the sound system, man power and everything else that went into putting on the celebration, approximately $70,000 that didn’t have to be spent so we could pay tribute, was a pure gift from Arizona Bike Week. I hope this clarifies any grumblings anyone heard about that $10. Watch for more articles on ABW rides and events in the next few issues. Check out our website for the rest of the photos of Arizona Bike Week. www.QuickThrottle.com MAY 2011 QTCASW_APR11.qxd:Layout 1 5/1/11 11:06 AM Page 23 23 MAY 2011 I’ve been staring at this white monitor for hours now, trying to figure out how to start. All the words I’ve said or feeling I’ve had in the last weeks have been so overwhelming, so powerful and so poignant, bringing life to them on a computer monitor is an insurmountable task. Where do I begin or an even bigger question, HOW do I begin to tell you what Kimmy Chapman meant to me as a part of our world? Kimmy Chapman, one of the most beloved icons in the Arizona biker community, took her final ride Saturday, March 26th, 2011. This was one of the hardest weekends facing our tight knit biker community. At the dawn of Arizona Bike Week, the premier motorcycle event of the year, the excitement and parties were suddenly hushed by the knowledge that our world had forever changed. There were many tears, and laughs, as everyone shared ‘remember when…’ stories. Not a single Pre-Rally event went without noticing the impact she made on all of us. Not one ladies room had the normal giggles and makeup clatter but became gathering places to comfort the never-ending stream of tears. Kimmy was a unique person, she was a class act and a good soul, one of a kind. She was respected by every decent publisher in the industry. Kimmy had a unique idealism about how we, the media, should conduct ourselves amongst ourselves. She didn’t like the idea of being competitors because her goal was to make the motorcycle community a better place for everyone. She believed there was a place for all of us as long as we “keep out of the hen house”. If we worked together the synergy would create a better biker experience for everyone in our community. She worked hard to better the biker experience. Kimmy was a fixture in Motorcycling. Every motorcycle event you went to, Kimmy was there. She was one of the original AZ Bike Week members, active in many charitable organizations and most big bike shows had her fingerprint on it. She had an endless supply of energy that inspired everyone around her. I was special to Kimmy. But I wasn’t unique; I was just like every other person in her life. Everyone was special to Kimmy. She loved everyone and we couldn’t help but love her too, with her kind eyes, infectious laugh, her never ending smile and inability to say a bad thing about anyone. The last words she spoke to me only hours earlier were, “You goof ” and we shared a laugh at my broken foot. But the words I will take with me everyday are “Don’t play in the hen house”. Kimmy, my friend, my neighbor, my mentor - you weren’t done with me, I will always look to you for wisdom. Big Hugs, Kimmy. Godspeed my friend. Thank you to everyone who sent pictures for this tribute. Special thanks to Kelly and Jim. I love a good party so I gladly accepted the task. Finding a theme for any party is the hardest part. Once there’s a theme, the planning easily falls into place. So I called on my dear friend Google for ideas and discovered the traditional seventh wedding anniversary gift is copper. We need to have a theme of copper, but hmm… A copper party isn’t too happening yet I knew I had to work it out somehow. Arizona’s copper production is 60% of the total for the US and in 2007 produced a record 750 thousand metric tons worth $5.5 billion. Morenci accounts for the majority of Arizona copper. There is an amazing ride on the old Route 666 (now 191 for political reasons) from Globe to Eager which will bring you through Morenci. You will be awestruck by the vastness on the mines as the road winds its way around each patina mountain. As I lay in bed one night, at that moment just before drifting into eight wonderful hours of sweet chrome dancing in my head, the lightning bolt hit “COPPER & CHROME”! Now that’s what I’m talking about. The wheels started spinning, chiseling away at my eight hours. But that was cool because I was imagining a celebration for our readers that would be all about Arizona, our history, our anniversary and our passion for motorcycles. It fell naturally into place since Paul Yaffe and the Arizona Centennial Commission just unveiled the Copper Chopper at the AZ State Fair. The Arizona Centennial Copper Chopper motorcycle serves as an ambassador, or the “official mascot,” of the Centennial, promoting Arizona’s 100th anniversary of statehood, motorcycle safety, and Arizona history. I knew we had to have the Copper Chopper on display at Copper & Chrome. So I made phone calls and found out what needed to happen to schedule it. It wasn’t just a phone call but it was well worth the effort. While I was handling the government red tape involved with having this amazing masterpiece at our event, I learned so much about the bike, the Centennial Commission and why Arizona chose a motorcycle as its centennial mascot. Did you know that one of the first motorcycles, the “steam velocipede,” was invented right here in Arizona in 1884? The Copper Chopper was produced by worldrenowned bike-builder, Paul Yaffe, a local everyday guy who loves all things motorcycle. He built it with a 100-cubic-inch engine, a cubic inch for every year of Arizona’s statehood. This 100-horsepower engine has 100 foot-pounds of torque. The bike is not only supposed to look like copper, it actually incorporates the very metal that gives it its name. Copper is too soft and doesn’t provide the strength required for motorcycle parts so elements like wheels and the tank were manufactured from traditional materials and then copper plated which was treated to prevent the bike from developing the characteristic patina. When our volunteers were helping set up the exhibit, they had to wear surgical gloves to keep from leaving oily fingerprints on the copper. The mascot for the Arizona Centennial was the brainchild of Arizona State representative Jerry Weiers (R), who is a motorcycle enthusiast and rider himself. As a group, the commission came up with a brief outline for the Copper Chopper and gave Paul free reign to design and build whatever he wanted. You can find the Copper Chopper and its travelling exhibit throughout the state at events such as the state and county fairs, professional and major college sporting events, major festivals, celebrations, motorcycle aficionado rallies and other major public gatherings. That last sentence was taken straight from the Centennial Commission’s website and ex- plains why I felt honored when the committee approved the Quick Throttle Copper & Chrome party as a host venue. The Copper Chopper is a unique piece of art and a slice of Arizona history as well as an educational tool. The exhibit features a large motorcycle safety exhibit. For both riders and cages! I was thrilled to see it includes information to raise awareness to drivers about seeing motorcycles. The festivities surrounding the Copper Chopper will end in a huge centennial party in downtown Phoenix on February 14, 2012. Part of the celebrations will include a centennial ride and a huge biker party thrown by the Arizona state government or so it appears right now. Stay tuned, we’ll keep you posted on that. We hoped you enjoyed the copper in our Copper & Chrome Anniversary celebration as much as we enjoyed bringing it to you. QTCASW_APR11.qxd:Layout 1 5/1/11 11:06 AM Page 27 27 MAY 2011 By Digger Dave My initial question was ”How many bikes can we get into this parking lot?” Mind you this was at around 8:30am while attempting to get vendors set up, banners hung, food lined up, and a host of other things ready. It was getting very busy, very quick. Vendors along with their trailers were rolling in preparing for the day’s event. Racks being set up with leather goods, tables loaded with jewelry, motorcycle accessories, t-shirts and the “Copper Chopper” stage was being erected in the middle of all of this. It appeared to be organized chaos. I never realized until now just how much work goes into setting up a vendor area and also how much work the actual vendors have to go thru in order for us to purchase our goods. It’s all good, it’s Quick Throttle Magazines 7th Anniversary Party!! It’s now 11 am at the Buffalo Chip in Cave Creek AZ….we have bikes rolling in. The 4 acre lot is all of a sudden lit up in the morning sunshine, CHROME! In my experience it has been “here comes a small pack”, my bad… this pack was endless! Here I be, standing out in front of the incoming packs on the side of the road attempting to direct the riders to a bike parking area. I had a little bit of a problem, I’d look at a bike and say to myself “wow that’s sweet!”, then again... and again and again. Too many sweet motorcycles to take in at one time, and they were being ridden, no trailers, no nothing. Thankfully all riders parked themselves….. The sea of CHROME was expanding. As I turned to look all I could see was a vast amount of Ape hangers, California bars, Z-Bars, Drag bars, and every type of MC being manufactured today, all parked two up and no worries. Nothing but smiles and brotherhood abounded. I’m going to hazard a guess just for the heck of it, standing on that small rise, looking slightly down on the bikes on my right, I immediately said to myself “ damn, easy 500 and they’re still coming”! My second thought was…”damn they’re a tad bit thirsty, hungry, and need to chillax.!” My intuitions were correct… That’s perfect, our host Neil and the Buffalo Chip staff were ready. The Tall Paul Band was setting up on stage to rock the house at our Quick Throttle Copper & Chrome Party. If you get a chance to hear these guys do it, they rock out!! Another rockin’ band and local favorite, the Cell Phone Cowboys, snuck up on stage and did a few songs. Thanks bros!! Then, AzLynn, Quick Throttle’s southern Arizona rep showed off her sexy young models wearing the latest lingerie fashions from her company Wind, Leather & Lace. These lovely’s put on a lingerie show in the early evening that kept all the guys occupied and wanting more! There was a “liars poker” game held during a band break and wouldn’t you know it, a nonbiker won the $100 cash pot and $250 a gift certificate kindly donated by Hacienda Harley Davidson! Think she’ll fall in love with CHROME and leave there with a bike? Let’s hope. Personally, to have an opportunity to witness a sea of chrome blossom, watch friends new and old laugh, share times past and present, paint and chrome reflecting with all the colors of the rainbow, it’s something I will always stand in awe of. Quick Throttle would like to thank Neil and the Buffalo Chip Saloon in Cave Creek for hosting our Copper & Chrome 7th Anniversary party. What a great place! Neil and his staff kept up with us all day long and well into the evening without missing a step. Make a point to go check out his killer smoked BBQ dinners, the brisket melts in your mouth! Whether you’re out for dinner, having a drink with friends, your birthday party or a major event, you will find yourself around friends at the Buffalo Chip. There’s plenty of space for any type of event you are planning. QTCASW_APR11.qxd:Layout 1 5/1/11 11:06 AM Page 31 31 MAY 2011 This year marked 41 years of business for Custom Chrome International, (CCI), and they started off the business year with a great dealers show at the first class Santa Clara Convention Center. The whole show was first class including the hospitality of the CCI staff and management. The drive up to Santa Clara can be one of the highlight motorcycle rides in the US, but for a couple of couple of “roadblocks” by mother nature I decide to drive. Part of highway one had been washed out by an landslide and is now closed for most of the year as it was major. The weather had “gone south” also as the cold and rain came with a fury, snow on the Grapevine even. So this was one of those I gotta drive to get there as even the flights were full to the bay area. It was well worth the trip though as I got to meet some great people from CCI and got up close and personal with many top builders in the US. How often do you get to sit around a table casually sipping a soda with Dave Perowitz, Arlen Ness, Corey Ness, & Wink Eller? I am always loathe to use names, but some though maybe not all noted builders as listed to attend by CCI were ... Arlen Ness - Corey Ness - Zach Ness - Paul Yaffe - Dave Perowitz - Wink Eller - Jim Giuffra - Cole Foster - Gerald Rinehart & Kirk Taylor. I counted over 75 bikes in the competition and the press release said 80 vendors would be on site, all enticed by special discounted pricing, vendor product seminars, a dealer welcome reception, the Saturday dealer show party, and the North American Championship of the Custom Chrome International Bike Show Series. Not to mention the great buffet table luncheon on both Saturday and Sunday. The dealer’s party on Saturday night was a huge success with high quality food, entertainment and drinks provided. It was one of the few conventions where I saw most all of the attendees at the party and they all seemed to be having a good time, great job CCI, thanks. Saturday was the dealers only portion of the show while Sunday was an innovative idea to open the venue to the public, and good idea at QTCASW_APR11.qxd:Layout 1 5/1/11 11:06 AM Page 32 32 MAY 2011 that, based on the attendance I saw. It makes perfect sense to have the best of both opportunities for dealers to have their private time to do business and then give the you the consumer a chance to get close to the guys that are there to supply you with your needs. “In bringing back the Custom Chrome Dealer Show in 2010, we wanted to keep the return of the Dealer Show a bit more intimate,” says CCI President and CEO Holger Mohr. “The response and attendance was so overwhelmingly positive that we completely stuffed last year’s location in terms of vending space, hotel rooms and overall facilities. For next year, we had to look for a location that could handle not only vendor booths and meeting rooms but also provide even higher levels of service that our dealers, vendors and visitors demand.” That statement played out well in 2011 as all aspects were well covered. New for the 2011 Dealer Show will be the finals of the Chrome International Bike Show Series - North American Championship Bike Show with thousands of dollars in prizes being awarded. The competition was open to all custom bike builders and customizers from the United States, Canada and South America. As mentioned, I counted over 75 bikes in the show and I felt that it’s a darn shame they can’t all win a trophy as every one could be winner. It was quite obvious a lot of work, time, effort and creativity went in to building every bike on the floor. Congratulations to the trophy winners. By Robert Sweeney The last two decades have witnessed the greatest interest in motorcycles in this country since Henry Ford relegated the motorized two-wheeler to second-class transportation status with his invention of the Model T. Motorcyclists have gone from sleazy urban terrorists to celebrity TV stars in the mind’s eye of John and Jane Q. Public. Motorcycles have become status symbols of the rich and famous and the HarleyDavidson trademark has assumed a place in the world of fashion alongside names such as Armani, Rolex and Versace. Sometimes it seems as though everybody wants to own a motorcycle; everyone wants to be a biker. But will America’s love affair with the motorcycle last? ous from these numbers that many do. Think you’re safe because you live in a state that doesn’t require helmets? Think again; the federal government is once again proposing a national mandatory helmet law. Where do you draw the line? What if the safety mavens decide that all riders must wear full protective gear from head to foot at all times? Will you still ride when it is required to suit up in an expensive safety suit, even just to ride to the corner store for a Coke and a Twinkie? (If, indeed, Coke and Twinkies aren’t outlawed by then) The federal government is currently passing out grant money to the states for the sole purpose of imposing motorcycle-only checkpoints. Motorcyclists will be pulled over, without probable cause, and they and their motorcycles will be inspected for proper registration and safety gear and given a lecture on motorcycle safety. Drivers of automobiles will not be affected by this, only motorcyclists. Will this be your “last straw”? Fads and fashion change and what is hot today will be oh, so yesterday tomorrow. Certainly many of those who bought motorcycles to fit in with the hip crowd will drop out and move on when new fads arise to redefine what is cool, but just as surely there will be many who will come to be as addicted to life on two wheels as any hard-core biker. But will that addiction be strong enough to weather some of the storms looming on the horizon? Probably the strongest sensation a motorcyclist experiences is the sense of freedom one has while riding. A motorcycle is a completely different experience from driving a car, even an exotic sports car. There is a much greater sense of being one with the machine. Riding a motorcycle requires more involvement than driving a car. One feels more “empowered” (to use the currently fashionable descriptive) and in control of oneself and the surrounding environment. Freedom in the sense of free from, rather than free to: Free from the 9 to 5 grind; free from mortgages, crabgrass and leaking water heaters; free from political correctness; free from all the BS in the world… if only for a few hundred miles at a time. This sense of freedom is intoxicating and hard to turn away from. And yet, some do. The question I pose today is aimed at those who know and understand this heady intoxication: The riders who “live to ride and ride to live”. What will it take… before you give up riding? Don’t answer right away; I want you to give this some serious thought. There are many possible circumstances to consider and they must be considered soon, before it’s too late. Obviously, severe illness or injury will be the cause of many people having to give up riding, but that involves chance, not choice. And sure, hard economic times and the loss of personal finances can separate us from our beloved machines, but that’s reversible. By the time you read this, gas may be well over $5.00 per gallon and that will cause many to curtail recreational riding, but an increase in income could just as quickly put you back on the road. No, what we’re talking about here are the things that will ultimately make you give up and throw in the towel for good. We’re talking about laws and regulations. The mandatory use of helmets has had a negative effect on motorcycling in many states. According to one source*, motorcycle registration in California is 40% lower today than it was in 1992, when the state adopted its helmet law. I have seen similar statistics from other helmet-law states. For many of us, it is hard to imagine giving up motorcycling just because we are required by law to wear a helmet, but it is obvi- The whole exhaust subject started over the issue of excess noise. Many riders demand that their bikes sound as awesome as they look. Many citizens throughout the country object to their peace and quiet being shattered by loud motorcycles. Anti-noise ordinances have been springing up like weeds after a rainstorm all over the country. Most of these new laws and ordinances are at best a nuisance and at worst draconian. Some towns have even taken to banning motorcycle traffic in certain areas. And all of these laws affect the riders of quiet bikes, as well as the obnoxiously loud ones. Is your motorcycle enthusiasm beginning to wane yet? Don’t think the Nanny State will stop at helmets and armored suits: Mandatory ABS is just around the corner; Honda offers an airbag on the Gold Wing, think the feds won’t be looking to make that mandatory, too? Former head of CalTrans, Joan Claybrook, once proposed seat belts for motorcycles! Various roll cages and outrigger devices have been designed and tested by companies hoping to catch the attention of the safetycrats. How much like a car will motorcycles have to become before you quit riding? For many bikers, making a personal statement with one’s motorcycle is an integral part of the lifestyle. Customizing the bike to be yours and yours alone is an essential element of the motorcycle experience for many and the thought of a “stock” bike is anathema to the whole biker ethic. Imagine everyone being forced to ride showroom-stock motorcycles for the rest of their lives! And yet, Those-Who-KnowBetter-Than-Us have already proposed laws that would require the use of stock, OEM parts such as handlebars, turn signals, hand and foot controls, suspension components, wheels and even tires! Imagine not being able to choose what brand of tire to put on your bike! As our readers are probably aware, California recently signed into law a bill making non-stock exhaust systems illegal on all motorcycles manufactured beginning with model year 2013. All pipes will have to bear the EPA certification stamp or the owner will be subject to a fine. A stiff fine. Aftermarket exhaust companies will have to jump through the hoops of EPA compliance testing in order to legally sell their exhaust systems. These tests take a lot of time and even more money, so only the larger companies will be able to afford certification, but on how many models? This is certain to drastically reduce the number of exhaust designs available, as each design would need to be certified separately, possibly for each different motorcycle for which it would be offered. Think you have no worries because you don’t live in California? Well, there’s an old saying: “As goes California, so goes the Nation”. Hair-brained notions that begin in California usually spread quickly to the other states. As we’ve seen, our beloved sport and lifestyle is under attack from many sides. From government-mandated standards on noise, accessories and safety gear to “safety experts” calling for the all-out banning of motorcycles from public roads**, those who do not ride are attempting to dictate to those of us who do how we should live. What will it take for you to run up the white flag? How long before you surrender? It’s an important question. But here’s an even more important question: What will it take… before you do something about it? What can you do? Become informed; get active; network with other bikers. There are many good people out there fighting to maintain our freedom. Join them. Groups such as the American Motorcyclist Association; ABATE; Motorcycle Riders Foundation; Modified Motorcycle Association, all are actively working to monitor the federal and state legislatures for any antimotorcycle activity and lobby our representatives on our behalf. They need our support. They need our involvement. Puffing out one’s chest, raising a defiant fist in the air and crying, “They can take my bike when they pry its handlebars from my cold, dead fingers!”, doesn’t accomplish anything if you’re not prepared to back it up. If we are not willing to work and to sweat and to fight for our rights, we cannot expect anyone else to do it for us. And the time to fight is right now, not after our fingers are cold and dead. Look up these various motorcycle rights organizations and get to know them. Attend any local meetings that may be held in your area. Join the one that best represents your views. You can join more than one; join them all even! The cost of joining all of these organizations combined will still be less than the cost of one good mandatory helmet. Ask yourself: What will it take… And keep in mind that no matter how extreme or far-fetched the answer, somewhere out there is a lawmaker working to make it happen. * bikersrights.com ** Rune Elvik, research chief at the Norwegian Institute of Transport Economics – as quoted in the UK Telegraph, March 6, 2011 Please contact these motorcycle rights organizations: americanmotorcyclist.com • abate.org mrf.org • mma-ca.org QTCASW_APR11.qxd:Layout 1 5/1/11 11:06 AM Page 36 36 MAY 2011 TEMECULA, CA* 7TH ANNUAL INJURED MARINE POKER RUN - Benefits the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund (www.semperfifund.org). They’ve been around forever but membership has sometimes fluctuated down to the last man standing. They are currently fleshed out with lots of new blood and fresh meat but it’s not quite as grisly as it sounds. They are rolling strong and carrying on the new old tradition of having fun while helping others. On March second, in cahoots with well known independent biker about town Chopper, the Southern Arizona Association for the Visually Impaired and numerous local business sponsors, all pitched in for their first annual Born to be Blind Beeper Ball Fundraiser ( and hellraiser afterparty ). According to Amy Murrillo, Head Blind Babe in Charge of the local SAAVI office, their mission is to assist the visually impaired to achieve independence, economic self sufficiency, and dignity. Funny, sounds a lot like what us 20 - 20 types want for ourselves also. Including the part about wearing cool shades. Proceeds of this years event will assist in sending local representatives to to the annual convention of the National Association for the Blind, to be held this year in Orlando, FL. Here, those who may still be learning get to interact with others who are walking the walk, succeeding despite their disability. Ever heard of beeper ball? Me neither, till now. Back about 1964 a guy named Charlie Fairbanks thought it might be fun for blind people to play baseball with a ball and bases that emit a beeping sound and a few modified rules. Turns out he was right in a big way and it caught on so well that a league was formed and teams compete to advance to the MBBA World Series. For this exhibition game the Southwest Slammers took on “The Bikers” or anyone with guts enough to put on a blindfold and play by their rules for a change. With the pros relaxed and patient, and possibly slightly amused, the rookies got to see what it’s like to be sightless - if that makes any sense. But the challengers came to play, swinging for the fences every time and mostly missing or running full steam the wrong way when they did manage to connect, confused by the multiple beeps. On defense they made a lot of spectacular diving stops. Actually, they all dove every time the opposing team got a hit with no real idea if any of those line drives were headed their way. What a hoot! Needless to say, though I will anyway, those ringers beat the rookies blind. Now who was that joker who left their pager on? As is customary with weekend athletes, after a hard played game and a handshake for the winner, it was time to head for the bar to celebrate victory and console defeat, which are equal in terms of thirst. But this time it was done up biker style with the venerable Bashful Bandit welcoming all with vendors in the parking lot and cold beer everywhere. A blind lady took a crash course in bartending and was soon slinging suds like an old pro.The blind learn fast because they have to. A new career path, perhaps? Live music was laid down by Deacon and his Ever Evolving Jam Band. It’s like a floating crap game where the places and players may change but they always keep the dice ( rockin’ and ) rolling. There were cute girls getting wet in the dunk tank, another circulating with a tray of jello shots, some beer girls, and a few more QTCASW_APR11.qxd:Layout 1 5/1/11 11:07 AM Page 41 MAY 2011 looking good for no special reason. One big hearted little guy took a plunge in the dunk tank himself, just to make it fair. I do wonder about the blind gentleman trying to give away strings of Mardi Gras beads. How would he know if it’s working? Can I tell the joke about the bumps around a woman’s nipple being braille for “Kiss Me”, or would that be going too far? There was a young man at the Bandit that afternoon I’d like to tell you about. Rick Sankey was indeed born to be blind, being sightless from birth. He is a graduate of the Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind in Tucson, which has long been supported by the Old Peublo Riders, so it all fits together like pieces of some cosmic puzzle, sort of . Rick has been overcoming obstacles from day one in his ongoing effort to”achieve all that it’s possible to achieve”. But a recent experience presented him with a new challenge. While in Michagan to celebrate his twenty first birthday his uncle arranged for him to ride on a Harley with a friend of the family. Like the rest of us, he was hooked and had to have more. But how? He was sharing these thoughts with a new friend at the party. Fortunately he was chatting with V-Rod Christy (see the June 07 issue of QT if you can find one) who knew what to do and how to get it done. Before the music faded and the last dolly had been dunked all the arrangements were made, and so it was that she and Mike Gelertner met Rick at his apartment complex a few days later. Mike is a well seasoned rider and all around good guy who eagerly volunteered the back seat of his 05 Road King Classic, the Iron Eagle. His wife Shelley was willing to give it up for one afternoon. No wait, I mean she was willing to share her man for an evening. No, that doesn’t sound right either. Well never mind, Shelley was cool with the idea so after a few loop de loops around the parking lot for practice they hit the open road in an inspirational display of True Biker Spirit. Right on, Rick - welcome to our world! Now you know why dogs like to hang their head out of car windows. That goes for guide dogs ,too Others have already offered more rides so this is just the beginning for one happy blind biker. Thanks to all the clubs, individuals, and businesses involved for their generosity and determination to make it a great day, no matter what - and for reminding me why I love motorcycles and the people who ride them. 41 QTCASW_APR11.qxd:Layout 1 5/1/11 11:07 AM Page 42 42 MAY 2011 VALLEJO, CA* END OF JUNE PARTY - $20.00 donation per person. For several years a spot located off the highway on Center Loop near the Hwys. 76/79 Junction has been open sometimes and closed sometimes, for extended periods. Recently new owners have taken over at this idyllic spot in the woods, re-opening The Hideout and welcoming bikers again with tasty food, thirst quenching beverages and ‘tall cold ones’, live music, and when called for, a big old fashioned wood burning fireplace. Our host Drew runs The Hideout and Sadie is at the bar along with the Hideout Hunnies, and all share in serving up the best burgers and French fries ever, along with other menu items. Fresh grilled hamburgers succulent and juicy and French fries with that slightly crispy yet tender texture, that I can vouch for from my taste test a few weeks ago. Yum! The bar itself is an old fashioned vintage bar with foot rails and stools, but you can also have a seat among the friendly conversation-sized tables out on the floor, and enjoy the live music as well. All along the room are windows with a view out to the bikes parked in front along the loop; the window views reflect in the bar mirror along with the antique utensils and décor on the walls, a nice mix of light, music, people and food that caps QTCASW_APR11.qxd:Layout 1 5/1/11 11:07 AM Page 45 MAY 2011 off your ride very well. Then if you are inclined you can shoot some pool in the room off to the side at the other end of the bar and fireplace. And if there’s a game on, watch it here on the big screen TV! This is a place that pretty soon you feel like you don’t want to leave! The Hideout can accommodate many types and sizes of planned events with huge outdoor seating areas as well, grass, stage areas and plenty of parking. The Hideout is actually situated across from the southeast end of Lake Henshaw, on what’s called Center Loop, a short 1/8 mile bit of road that just takes you off the highway and behind the trees, with one end also connecting to Mesa Grande Rd., another riding adventure through the hills & twisties. So parking is along the little two lane loop road, very quiet and away from the highway traffic, a study in silence as the sounds of motorcycles absorb into the trees in the surrounding woods. As the season kicked off mid March The Hideout welcomed a group ride to remember their friend Ron Clewes who passed away a few weeks earlier. Ron was a frequent visitor to The Hideout; memories made here, and friends also come back to remember those times. On a warm summer’s day, or a cool crisp spring or fall, or during Holiday time when that big wood burning fireplace really earns its keep, The Hideout is open weekends all year, weather permitting, from 10 am to 5 pm. You can log on to www.hideoutsaloon.com for update info and sign up for their email list to receive info about what’s new-SEE YOU AT THE HIDEOUT!! 45 QTCASW_APR11.qxd:Layout 1 46 5/1/11 11:07 AM Page 46 MAY 2011 QTCASW_APR11.qxd:Layout 1 MAY 2011 5/1/11 11:07 AM Page 47 47 QTCASW_APR11.qxd:Layout 1 48 5/1/11 11:07 AM Page 48 MAY 2011 QTCASW_APR11.qxd:Layout 1 5/1/11 11:07 AM Page 49 MAY 2011 49 We as riders put ourselves through a lot, but we love what we do. The Southwest is now wrapping up the Spring 2011 riding season. Below are a few of the events that came and went and if you missed them, your loss! But, there are still a few more good ones coming up. Look at the ads that promote the best rides or events and join us. Don't forget - you can dust your chrome off all summer by taking an evening ride and check out the bike nights listed in our Weekly Events page. March 5, 2011. Los Vatos had their Blessing of the Bikes event at Santa Cruz Church 1220 S. 6th ave, Tucson. What a huge turnout and it is always good to have a little help with us as we ride through the country and beyond. After the ceremony, we all rode down the street to Los Portales restaurant located at 2615 S. 6th ave, Tucson for some outstanding food and drinks where “Sol Down” was jamming out the sounds. It was a wonderful time with wonderful friends and the start of a wonderful riding season. If you missed this one, keep your eye out for next year’s event because we will be doing it again. A big thanks goes out to Jimmy and Alfred for their hard working setting this up. March 6, 2011. Club Caffeine. Held monthly, the first Sunday of the month Ironwood Cycles located at 329 E. Grant Road Tucson holds there Club Caffeine and they provide the Donuts & Coffee. This event starts at 7:30 am (That’s right) in the early morning but it is a super place to meet and greet and do nothing but talk about Motorcycles. Gus and Cliff have it together here and there are all kinds of Rides in there shop; old and new of all brands. It’s a perfect opportunity to ask questions, set up future projects and order parts. The shop has an old school style like it used to be and it is a must to check out plus QuickThrottle staff is always on site with magazines and picture taking. March 12, 2011. BACA 2nd annual Charity Run. Last year’s event being the first had a pretty good turnout for the Bikers against Child Abuse but this year it was off the wall. Showing up to register at Merles Automotive at 4015 S. Dodge, Tucson you were greeted with 300 plus Rides, Coffee, pastries and a Bike Blessing before we departed. You received a goody bag full of items and you got to go on a wonderful ride through the Southwest. Stops and points of interest were the Cowpony, R place Bar & Grill, Tucson Harley Davidson, Tiny’s Saloon & Steakhouse, and Branding Iron South before heading to Tucson Detachment 007 Marine Corps League Clubhouse. This is where we were treated to vendors, a BBQ dinner, bikini wash, Tattoos/piercing, raffles and Live music by Rockinfossils. After a wonderful day in the seat it, was nice to hang out and enjoy a fresh cold one knowing it is for a super cause. Thanks BACA and for more info check out www.bacaworld.org. QTCASW_APR11.qxd:Layout 1 5/1/11 11:07 AM Page 50 50 MAY 2011 March 27, 2011. 8th Annual Ride for the Red. This year was a different ride. We had 2 choices to get to our destination. We left the American Red Cross located at 2916 E. Broadway with a parking lot of over 850 Rides heading to our destination, Ringo’s Bar in Tombstone AZ. The weather was great and we took the long scenic route 83 through Sonoita to 82 east to 80 and then south. Whoever planned this route definitely made the right choice. We arrived in Tombstone to a packed lot with plans to check out the whole town and then party. Of course, the ride gave you a chance to think about all that the Red Cross does for the world and gave everyone a good feeling that we did a little on our part to help as well. This event introduced me to a new game I had never played before; the Bug Splat contest. You place a bull’s eye on your bike or anywhere and if a bug hits it, you win a prize. This is the first time I have ridden through AZ and never felt or saw a bug coming my way. Thanks Red Cross for what you do and Thanks to the Bikers for all of your support. April 10, 2011 Benefit for Hope No-Kill Animal Shelter. A friend, Margo, called and asked if we could attend their First Annual Benefit for HOPE. They are Tucson’s only no-kill, cage-free haven for abandoned dogs and cats awaiting adoption. Please check out their web site www.hopeanimalshelter.net. Even with the weather cloudy and cool, they had a great turn out. The event included a Bike & Car show, vendors, and Jams coming from the Rowdies. It turned out to be a wonderful day for a wonderful benefit. If you have the time please join us next year to throw a little support their way and you might even find the animal of your choice that will go for a ride with you and become your best friend. Hope to see you there and thanks Margo and Hope Animal Shelter for an outstanding day. March 12, 2011. BACA 2nd annual Charity Run. Last year’s event being the first had a pretty good turnout for On a sad note, we lost two friends recently. The first was Kimmy from Bikers Information Guide. I only met her a few times when I was up in Phoenix for Bike Week and my first impression was that she was warm and friendly. It was sad news to hear. Please be safe out there! The second was Marcos Diaz, one of the founders of Los Vatos. I didn’t know Marcos very well but the first time I saw him was at a Memorial Run that starts at his house the first Saturday after Thanksgiving and what impressed me about Marcos was he was in a tragic Accident in 1972 that left him paralyzed from the waist down. Did this stop Marcos? No! He built Trikes and rode like there was no tomorrow. It was an honor to be at his Memorial and hear all of what Marcos accomplished and all that he went through. He did what he wanted when he wanted regardless of what he was told. He served as a reminder to everyone who knew him to be grateful, to live in the moment, and have fun doing it. Take care of yourself and your Brothers & Sisters while enjoying what we do most RIDE and Ride Safe. Hope to see you out there. She doesn’t care about marital power struggles or generational schisms. She certainly can’t be bothered with brand rivalries or gender prejudice. She believes that anybody who thinks they might like to ride is probably right and should acquire a bike that is special to them and then ride the hell out of it. She happens to like Harley Davidsons. She’s too young to remember a time when women riders and imported bikes were rare. Her’s has always been a motorcycling family, starting in the 1930’s with Aunt Gladys, who was the first woman to show up in their Podunk, Minnesota town on a motorcycle. We can assume it was American made. Bet she turned a few heads that day. Various members of the extended family took to the idea and began a family tradition of motorcycling. Megan’s father didn’t even own a car till he was married with a family of his own to haul around. After a few years, with things going smooth on the home front, he picked up a Goldwing to ride mama around. Perhaps he was feeling middle aged when he changed his mind and traded it for the Harley he’d always wanted. Or maybe he just liked that bike and so did the wife. Megan just naturally inherited a “passion for riding”. She passengered with Dad and her older brother around town . At thirteen she was bombing around the backroads herself on a Honda Rebel, and after attending a motorcycle safety course she got her liscence with an M endorsement at sweet sixteen. After that there was no keeping her down on the farm and she was soon a regular at local events. Remember that for her, Sturgis was local. With her brother gone doing a hitch in the Marines, Megan and her Dad bonded by riding side by side and getting “wild and crazy” together in a touching example of Biker Family Values. Big Bro’s home now, building custom bikes and riding with the old man and his littlest sister as well as the numerous sidehill kinfolks they’ve accumulated after so many generations in the area. But Megan’s horizons have expanded. It’s a story I’ve heard before. One with a happy ending. You love to ride but come from the land of ice and snow where the cold winds blow. You visit friends in Arizona in the winter and something comes over you. Immediately upon your return, you quit your job and kiss the old boyfriend goodbye, you won’t be needing him anymore. You pack the car and have a hitch installed to tow your bike back to the land of year round sun and non stop riding. You leave the battery tender and snowmobile suit in the garage. You won’t be needing them either. You head west and don’t stop till you reach Tucson. As the miles unwind you don’t think of all you’ve left behind or the uncertainty that lies ahead but instead are planning the rides you want to take in your new home and mentally leaning through the turns already. When not working as a physical therapist she does what she came here to do: lots of riding. She’s got a new boyfriend to go with the new job and an ever expanding circle of friends that includes men and women, some younger or older, riding all makes and models of motorcycles. Just show up, head out and have fun. She’s taking full advantage of the good weather and great desert highways to live the dream and make miles on her 04 Sportster. She likes the drag bars and with Screaming Eagle pipes and a stage one upgrade the 883 can definitely get out of it’s own way. Megan would enjoy the company of more women riders and younger riders on HD’s, especially women. She believes people worry to much about projecting image and looking like a “Biker” if that gets in the way of getting out there on your two wheel rocketship and actually being one. As for all this talk of overweight aging boomers buying Harleys to rewrite the past while the younger generation gravitates to bikes that are faster or more radical, well it may be true for some, but not Megan. Except for me, she doesn’t even know any fat old men who ride a Harley, but if any want to ride along that’s cool too. With things going so well she thinks it might be about time for a trip back east to get her brother started on building her a custom Softail. Something to give her a little more range as she continues to blaze new trails as a ( young ) woman who rides.
