The citation reads as follows : AItMED FORCES POLICE DDTACH11ENT, WASHINGTON, DC For meritorious achievement while conducting military police operations i"n the Naval District of Washington, DC from 1 October 1969 to 6 May 137L Throughout this period, the Armed Forces Police Detachment, Washington, DC, consistently displayed an exceptionally high degree of professional conrpeterce, judgment, dedication, and cooperation in carrying out its mission in 10 TACO 289A GO 43 the Washington, DC area . Particularly noteworthy were the detacluuenCs initiative and vigorous deployment of escort procedures and communication actions during the Anti-Vietnam War demonstrations of November 1969, May 1970, and 'May Day 1971 . During these periods, more than 350 sepnrateconvoys were escorted over 48,000 miles of congested urban and suburban roadways without incident or accident . This efficient completion of mission provided the valuable backup forces so urgently needed by the local civil law enforcement authorities of the Nation's Capital . On a routine daily basis, the detachment patrolled the Naval District Washington, DC area, rendering assistance to military personnel of all ranks and services, and apprehending those persons on unauthorized leave.
