navidades en España es la noche buena, en
la que se celebra una gran cena alrededor
de la mesa. Muchas otras nacionalidades
celebran la Navidad el día 24 incluyendo
países del centro de Europa tales como
Hungría, Republica Checa, Alemania,

posiblemente en otros lugares la noche

1st January New years Day for many is to
sleep and recover from a long fun filled
party, but there are many of us who will
go out to a walk along the beach, have
New Years Day lunch in a favourite spot
and take time with your family for a day
of relaxation. The 5th January celebrates
the end of Christmas and the arrival of
the three Kings, Melchior Caspar and
Balthazar a majestic procession through
the streets the children go to see with
their parents and get sweets from them.
Families return home to put our milk and
biscuits next to the Christmas tree for
the three kings and some water for their
camels. The children go to bed excited
to wake the next morning for gifts
brought by the kings. The 6th of January
is a National Holiday, children wake up
and see how many presents they have
received. If they have been good, they
will find a lot of good presents but if they
have been naughty they will find coal.
These days, the coal is actually made
of sugar, but some years ago it was real
coal.
During this day, all families enjoy a piece
of roscon (a sugar-frosted fruit-filled
bread) for breakfast tradition says that
the person who finds a novelty such as a
coin, in his or her portion will have good
luck for the next year. Both young and
old enjoy opening their presents on this
day, but sadly it also marks the end of
Christmas.

porción tendrá suerte a lo largo del año.
Los jóvenes y los mayores disfrutan abriendo
regalos en este día aunque es la fecha que
marca el final de las navidades.

1 de enero día de Año Nuevo, para muchos es
un día para dormir y recuperarse de una noche
de fiesta, aunque muchos de nosotros iremos
a caminar por la playa y a comer en nuestro
lugar favorito con nuestra familia en un día de
relax. El día 5 de enero se celebra el fin de la
navidad y la llegada de los tres Reyes Magos,
Melchor, Gaspar y Baltasar con una majestuosa cabalgata por las calles a la que los niños
acuden con sus padres y recogen caramelos.
Al finalizar la cabalgata, las familias vuelven

FA Cup crown away at Southampton
in one of four all-Premier League ties

selection of food ranging from the speciality meats such as

Situated in the old town of Benidorm, this
rustic bar/tavern is decorated in the traditional style of wood and wrought iron.
The wine list is quite classic and includes
a lot of Rioja and Ribera wines which are
organised according to their age (young,
crianza, reserves etc.) and are good value.
Excellent tapas which are displayed in
glass cases on the bar and great dishes
to share such as salad with foie, boletus
mushrooms and duck magret, or stuffed
thistle. If you are a meat lover, then don’t
miss out on the tremendous stone-fried
T-bone Steaks which the Bodegon Aurrera offers. Well prepared home-made
desserts and exotic violet ice-cream. One
of the best bars in the area.
Restaurante Bodegon Aurera situado en el
casco antiguo de Benidorm. Taberna/mesón,
con decoración tradicional. La comida está
realizada con materias primas de primera
calidad y muy bien presentadas. La carta de
vinos es de corte “clásico” muchos Riojas
y Riberas y organizada según su crianza
(jóvenes, crianzas, reservas, …) con buen
precios. Tapas excelentes y platos para compartir como la ensalada de foie con boletus
y magret de pato, cardos rellenos etc. Si le
gusta la carne, no puede perderse los enormes
chuletones a la la piedra fileteados que ofrece
el Bodegon Aurrera. Postres bien elaborados y
exótico helado de violetas. Uno de los mejores
bares en la zona.

Drinking Games
After the Olympic Games
in London 2012, its has left
us with a desire of wanting
to get involved in sport and
social pleasure of visiting
pubs and bars as it is a culture
that apparently all enjoyed in
the UK and in Spain. It seems
that the latest craze is a social
mix of pleasure with fantastic
recreation games.
We are looking for the best
establishment once a month

where we can participate in
recreational games, so if you
can offer any suggestions
send an SMS or e-mail.
There are many games to play
while we like to take a drink,
but one of my favorites I
found in “Penelope Beach”.
Located opposite the Levante
beach, a lively bar that
attracts visitors from across
the region. Table tennis used
to be very popular among
men and women equally but
is not very common in pubs
and bars, the most common
games usually dice and
billiards, so I was pleasantly
surprised.
Jose asked the manager if
table tennis was popular and
he told me that customers
returned again and again to
enjoy the game and stayed
for hours and hours playing
with family and friends.
Table tennis is also known
worldwide as “Ping Pong”
maybe someone can tell
me where this name comes,
anything to do with China?
Being an Olympic sport
and played worldwide it’s
popularity has grown and
grown, it can be played
individually or in pairs and
qualifying competitions are
ideal for groups.

Londres 2012, nos han dejado
con unas ganasn de querer
involucrarnos en el deporte y el
placer social de visitar pubs y
bares ya que es una cultura que
al parecer todos disfrutamos
en Reino Unido y en España.
Parece ser que la última moda
es mezclar el placer social
con juegos recreativos en
establecimientos fantásticos.
Estamos buscando el mejor
establecimiento dónde una vez
al mes podamos participar en
juegos recreativos, así que,
si nos puedes ofrecer alguna
sugerencia al respecto envíanos
un sms o e-mail. Hay muchos
juegos a los que nos gusta jugar
mientras tomamos una copa,
pero uno de mis favoritos lo
encontré en “Penelope Beach”.
Localizado frente a la playa de
Levante, un bar lleno de vida
que atrae visitantes de toda la
región. El tenis de mesa solía
ser muy popular entre hombres
y mujeres por igual pero no es
muy común en pubs y bares,
los juegos más comunes suelen
ser los dados y el billar así que
me lleve una grata sorpresa.
Pregunté a Jose el manager, si la
mesa de tenis era popular y me
contó que los clientes volvían
una y otra vez a disfrutar del
juego y se quedaban horas y
horas jugando con familiares y
amigos.
El Tenis de mesa también es
conocido a nivel mundial como
“Ping Pong” tal vez alguien
puede decirme de donde procede
este nombre, ¿puede que de
China?
Siendo un deporte Olímpico y
jugado por el mundo entero su
popularidad ha crecido y crecido,
puede ser jugado de manera
individual o por parejas y las
competiciones eliminatorias son
ideales para grupos.

Jamón serrano
Jamón Serrano
(literally hill ham) is a type of jamón
(dry-cured Spanish ham), which is
generally served raw in thin slices, or
occasionally diced.
The majority of Serrano hams are made
from the Landrace breed of white pig
and are not to be confused with the
much more expensive and entirely
different Jamón ibérico.
Fresh hams are trimmed and cleaned,
then stacked and covered with salt for
about two weeks in order to draw off
excess moisture and preserve the meat
from spoiling. The salt is then washed off
and the hams are hung to dry for about
six months. Finally, the hams are hung
in a cool, dry place for six to eighteen
months, depending on the climate, as
well as the size and type of ham being
cured. The drying sheds (secaderos) are
usually built at higher elevations, which
is why the ham is called mountain ham.
There are many producers of Spanish
hams but the level of quality can be
judged by the following:
• The type of pig
• The way the pig has been fed
• The part of the pig used to make the
ham
• The way the ham is cured
The four major quality categories of
cured ham are as follows, from highest
to lowest quality:
Jamón Iberico de Bellota:
Free-range, acorn-fed Iberian pigs
Jamón Iberico de Recebo:
Acorn, pasture and compound-fed
Iberian pigs
Jamón Iberico de Campo:
(Sometimes just Jamón Iberico in short
and also known as Jamón de Pata
Negra). Compound-fed Iberian pigs.
Pata negra (literally black hoof ), which
only accounts for about five percent of
total ham production, is made from the
Black Iberian Pig (cerdo ibérico). The
best varieties of pata negra are range
fed and fattened on acorns in cork
oak groves along the southern border
between Spain and Portugal. (see the
two subcategories above)
