This “build” has so many useable lessons: 1. They used Cordwood and the Code for code approval and building modifications. 2. They used an architect to draw and stamp their plans, which made the building process much smoother. 3. The architectural plans were also used for bidding materials and gathering estimates for their construction loan. 4. The plans and their attention to detail made the construction loan become a mortgage. 5. They completed most of the work themselves and used professionals when code and expertise were required. 6. Wisconsin's Uniform Dwelling Code was followed to the letter. 7. Their 3 bedroom cordwood home is a model for others to follow. Alan & Rebecca Barrecca Wilburton, Oklahoma At the edge of Ouchita Forest, ten miles south of Wilburton, Oklahoma, is a small community of homes in a serene, quiet, forested area, called the United Spanish War Veterans Colony, where about 100 military veterans and their families reside. Being a proud veteran, here is where my wife and I built our 12 inch thick, red cedar cordwood home. The home boasts an earthen floor and a light-weight living roof. Our home features an open floor plan with a four-post center-support, and seven-foot high white pine interior walls, which allow light and air to flow easily through the house. Therefore, our home is easy to heat and cool in the hot, humid climate of SE Oklahoma. We also have an ondemand, propane hot water heater, a Hearthstone wood stove, a "mini-split" electric heat exchanger, and a Solar Tube for natural lighting We had the "experience of a lifetime" building this home and we are happy to say we did much of the work ourselves A Hearthstone wood stove with red cedar walls.
