A n n u a l Re p o r t Cancer delivers a terrible blow, but … 2005 2006 Cancer delivers a terrible blow, but more and more people are resuming healthy, productive lives af ter being weakened by cancer and its treatment . The daffodil is the Canadian Cancer Society’s emblem. Although delicate, the daffodil braves the final days of winter and its bright yellow colour marks the arrival of spring. The daffodil: A symbol of hope for people living with cancer. Cancer is the leading cause of death in Quebec. According to the latest statistics1… • At least 1 person in 3 will develop cancer in their lifetime. • 1 person in 4 will die from cancer. • 38,300 Quebecers will be diagnosed with cancer in 2006 and 19,000 people will die from the disease. But… • Between 1976 and 2001, cancer mortality rates dropped 15% in women, with the exception of lung cancer. • Between 1988 and 2001, cancer mortality rates dropped 12% in men. • Since the 1950s, cancer mortality rates in children have declined more than 50%. Due to a shortage of funds, only 1 research project out of 3 that is presented to the National Cancer Institute of Canada and meets the criteria is funded. Imagine if they all were! 1 Canadian Cancer Society/National Cancer Institute of Canada: Canadian Cancer Statistics 2006, Toronto, Canada, 2006 Cancer delivers a terrible blow, but … Our mission The Canadian Cancer Society is a national community-based organization of volunteers whose mission is to eradicate cancer and to improve the quality of life of people living with cancer. The Canadian Cancer Society achieves its mission by: • funding promising research projects on all types of cancer; • providing information; • promoting healthy lifestyles and strategies for reducing cancer risk; • providing services and support to people living with cancer; • advocating for healthy public policy and cancer control. The Canadian Cancer Society relies on the unwavering commitment of its volunteers and employees, and on the generosity of its donors from every region of Canada. The Canadian Cancer Society in Quebec The Canadian Cancer Society has 10 divisions in Canada, each representing a province. The Quebec Division comprises: • Board of Directors, an Executive Committee and a few advisory committees made up of volunteers; • 25,000 volunteers from some 220 sections (cities and towns in Quebec), grouped into two major regions (the Central and Eastern Region and the Western Region); • some 150 employees working in the Division offices located in the Jacques-Cantin Lodge in Montreal, or at one of the 14 regional offices spread across the province. … the Canadian Cancer Society is there to lead the battle on ever y front and against all types of cancer. 3 ... Message from the Executive Director 1985 — 2006 Photo Paul Labelle Parting words… The 2005-2006 year was my last at the helm of the Canadian Cancer Society’s Quebec Division. On January 31, 2006, I retired. And, as if to give me a memorable send-off, 2005-2006 proved to be quite a year! • The Division achieved its best financial results to date: $16,314,541. • The Daffodil Ball, 2005 edition, earned two more awards of excellence. • Thirty-five Relay For Life events were held, involving 11,669 participants and raising $2,607,807. • The Society’s Lodge in Quebec was named after Jacques-Cantin in memory of this remarkable volunteer. • The Cancer J’écoute (Cancer Connection) program completed its first full year, having made more than 500 matches. • The Power of Research –the first conference on research held by the Quebec Division– was attended by 250 volunteers and employees as well as the President and Executive Director of the National Cancer Institute of Canada. • The Society participated for the first time in the Défi 5/30, for which some 50,000 Quebecers signed up. • Following years of discussions, Healthpartners may now fundraise among provincial civil servants through payroll deduction donations. • The Coalition priorité cancer au Québec held its second forum on cancer and made a presentation at the 1st International Cancer Control Congress. • Provincial legislation was passed banning smoking in bars and restaurants. • The new federal government made a commitment to fund the implementation of the Canadian Strategy for Cancer Control. • Canada’s English-language press featured three major reports on the Canada-China Mission, an initiative the Society’s Quebec Division has been involved in since 1996. I would like to thank our volunteers, employees, partners and donors who have all helped in achieving these outstanding results. After 21 years of service, I am stepping aside, confident that the new team in place will pursue our work and bring us closer to the day when cancer is no more than a bad memory. Let’s make cancer history! Nicole Magnan Executive Director ... 4 Message from the President Photo Paul Labelle The Canadian Cancer Society, a guiding light in the fight against cancer. What an honour it is to be President of the Canadian Cancer Society’s Quebec Division and head up such a terrific team of close to 25,000 volunteers and some 150 employees. Our crew is more energetic and motivated than ever! I am very proud to present the financial results for the 2005-2006 fiscal period and highlight some of our achievements! • The Relay For Life’s dramatic 90% increase in revenues. • An $800,000 (23%) increase in the Quebec Division’s contribution to research. • Partnerships in two major awareness campaigns on healthy lifestyle choices, enabling us to achieve specific prevention and support objectives and demonstrate our leading role in promoting health: • The Quit to Win! Challenge, which, now after its 6th year, has convinced more than 200,000 people to quit smoking. • Défi Santé 5/30, which, in its very first year, attracted over 50,000 participants and inspired them to eat five servings of vegetables and fruits and get 30 minutes of exercise a day. • A research conference that forged closer ties between the Quebec Division and the National Cancer Institute of Canada, and, above all, better equipped our volunteers and employees to be proud ambassadors of cancer research. • Increased visibility for the Canadian Cancer Society through sustained press relations, participation in two Challenges, and two advertising campaigns supported by numerous media partners, one to promote the Relay For Life and ensure increased revenues with which to achieve the Society’s mission, and the other to promote our information and support services and thereby enhance the quality of life of even more people living with cancer. This past year involved major challenges for our Board of Directors. It was a year marked by change and of looking ahead to the future. With a view to maintaining solid relations and an open line of communication with its stakeholders, and to ensuring strong performance and excellence for the Quebec Division, the Board of Directors worked steadily throughout the year on policy governance. It reviewed the roles and responsibilities of the Quebec Division, the Board of Directors, the Executive Director, and the make-up of the Board of Directors. 5 ... The Board also chose a successor to Nicole Magnan, who has now retired after leading the Quebec Division for 21 years. I would like to take this opportunity, on behalf of the Division, to express our utmost gratitude to Ms. Magnan for all that she achieved during her years of service with the organization, and for her contribution to the Canadian Cancer Society’s extraordinary progress and growth. The Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Suzanne Dubois as Executive Director. She is a strong team player with solid experience in directing philanthropic organizations. We feel certain that Ms. Dubois will take the Quebec Division to new heights by creating strategic partnerships and developing stronger ties with the public, our volunteers and our donors. This past year was a tremendously successful one. And you can rest assured that we will build on this by continuing to work together with our partners, donors, volunteers, researchers and employees to remain a guiding light in the fight against cancer. You can count on us because it is passion and dedication that guide our actions. Together, we are stronger! Louise Labrie President Suzanne Dubois, M.B.A. Ms. Dubois has an Executive Master of Business Administration and a Bachelor’s degree in accounting. She has 18 years of experience as an Executive Director of non-profit health organizations. In 2001, she won the Director of the Year Award from the Association des professionnels en gestion philanthropique. From 1987 to 1993, Ms. Dubois was the Executive Director of the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada (Quebec Division), and held the position of Executive Director of the Mental Illness Foundation from 1993 to 2006. Ms. Dubois’ achievements while working with these two organizations were numerous: societal campaigns, fundraising initiatives and improvements to programs and services. Creative at coming up with solutions, she has a compassionate approach, strong team spirit and full respect for volunteers. Photo Paul Labelle ... 6 … research inspires hope of a world where no one would fear cancer. Thanks to its generous donors, the Canadian Cancer Society is the largest charitable funder of cancer research in Canada. While we could limit ourselves to financing research, it is important for us to do more. Publicizing research and the progress being achieved means, first and foremost, giving hope to all those fighting the disease. Two decades that have helped lessen the burden of people living with cancer It is reassuring to know that: • more than 50% of people diagnosed with cancer today survive the disease; • the mortality rates for most types of cancer are declining; • certain types of cancer are considered to be “under control”; • traditional treatment methods are more effective than ever and have fewer side effects: • surgery is now more accurate and less invasive; • chemotherapy drugs are less toxic and their actions more targeted; • radiation therapy is more effective and is saving more healthy cells. 7 ... In the last 20 years, we have developed a better understanding of how cancer develops, and therefore how to better detect and treat it. We have also learned that prevention is one way to significantly reduce cancer mortality. The Canadian Cancer Society counts on its volunteers, employees and even its donors to publicize cancer research and the progress being made. To help them in this endeavour, we try to explain research in clear and simple terms so that they can be proud, province-wide ambassadors of the research funded by the Society. Educating our volunteers and employees Annual Conference: “The Power of Research” At the Annual Conference in November 2005, our volunteers and employees were immersed in research. During the two-day meeting, they listened as researchers gave passionate accounts of the results of their day-to-day work, and patients described how research has played a vital role in their treatment and quality of life. As well, the Executive Director and the President of the National Cancer Institute of Canada, the Canadian Cancer Society’s scientific partner, sketched a clear picture of cancer research, past and future. Participants also had the opportunity to take part in a workshop to discuss their role and ways to promote research within the Society’s various activities. Photo Gaétan Côté “Of course I want to share my scientific knowledge with my students and colleagues, but I also want to share a more human side so they know that cancer is far more than just a story about mice: it’s also my story, and the story of people close to them.” These were the heartfelt words of Dr. Nicole Beauchemin, professor at McGill University’s Faculty of Medicine and researcher, in her personal story, included in the 2005 Christmas direct-mail campaign dedicated to research. She spoke about the research she and her team are conducting into colorectal cancer, but also about her own personal experience as a breast cancer survivor. Prior to this, Dr. Beauchemin had spoken at “The Power of Research” conference and the Richelieu-Yamaska regional meeting. These occasions enabled her to express how proud she is to team up with the Canadian Cancer Society. She also thanked the volunteers and donors for helping fund her research. For us, it was a way to promote Quebec’s researchers and put a human face on research. Photo Gaétan Côté ... 8 Tools for promoting research Our participants were amazed by everything they heard at “The Power of Research” conference and this has certainly boosted their enthusiasm for promoting cancer research. But at the same time, we wanted to make sure they have the detailed information they need to carry out their work. So, we adapted a video produced by the National Office, Giving us a chance… to make cancer history, about the cancer research financed by the Society, and equipped them with a binder containing a wealth of information, including: • the roles of the National Cancer Institute of Canada (NCIC) and the Canadian Cancer Society in the area of research; • the process for allocating grants from the NCIC; • information on Quebec researchers funded by the Canadian Cancer Society; • the progress being made in cancer research; • cancer fact sheets and statistics; • answers to the most frequently asked questions about cancer research. 2005-2006 at a glance In Canada: • The Canadian Cancer Society is the largest charitable funder of cancer research in Canada. • Further to a strict scientific review process, $46.8 million contributed by the Society was granted to Canadian researchers by the National Cancer Institute of Canada (NCIC), the Canadian Cancer Society’s scientific partner. • A broad range of research projects on all types of cancer are funded: • Biomedical cancer research in the lab • Epidemiological and public health research • Clinical research on diagnosing, treating, managing and preventing cancer • Psychosocial and behavioural research to enhance quality of life In Quebec: • $4.3 million was contributed to the national research fund by the Quebec Division. • Quebec researchers shared over $5 million in new research funding. • 68 research projects funded by the Society are underway in Quebec in the following institutions: • 4 hospitals: Centre de recherche du CHUM – Hôtel-Dieu, Jewish General Hospital, Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital, Sainte-Justine UHC • 4 universities: McGill University, Université de Montréal, Université de Sherbrooke, Université Laval • 6 research institutes: Direction de la santé publique de Montréal-Centre, INRS-Institut Armand-Frappier, IRCM-Clinical Research Institute of Montreal, IRIC – Institut de recherche en immunologie et cancer de l’Université de Montréal, Lady Davis Institute of the Jewish General Hospital, Montreal Neurological Institute • 52 clinical trials are underway in Quebec conducted by 190 researchers with more than 1,480 patients. 9 ... … being properly informed makes it possible to face cancer with less uncer tainty. Photo Charles-Henri Debeur In 2005-2006, there was an increase in the number of enquiries made to the Cancer Information Service centre in Montreal, both by phone and e-mail. Thanks to the Canadian Cancer Society’s increased visibility in the Quebec media, we are enabling more people to find out about our services and how to access them when cancer strikes. Cancer Information Service: 1 888 939-3333 Meeting demand with a leading-edge computer system Our information specialists respond in clear and simple terms to questions about cancer, its treatments and how to prevent it. To do so, they have access to the Canadian Cancer Encyclopedia™, a comprehensive database of cancer information written by the Canadian Cancer Society in collaboration with renowned health professionals. Our information specialists can also consult a directory of community services so that, if necessary, they can refer their clients to a specific service available in their neighbourhood. The specialists can also send clients documentation. To better serve the public and to compile statistics on its clientele and their enquiries, the Information Service has been using Dialogue, a database management software, since 2001. This year, a number of information specialists across the country took part in an initiative to improve Dialogue. The Montreal centre was given full responsibility for the French adaptation of the software. ... 10 Publications: Quality branding Because we put so much effort into producing quality information, we have to be sure it is accessible to as many people living with cancer as possible. The Canadian Cancer Society conducted a branding initiative enabling its 10 divisions to give a new look to all the material they produce. As existing information brochures come due for reprinting or revision, they will be updated with the new visual. Having a standardized look makes it easier to identify Canadian Cancer Society publications, particularly in hospitals where our material is among so much other documentation. The colour of the cover indicates what category of information the publication contains. Coping with cancer The Canadian Cancer Society knows that being diagnosed with cancer comes as a terrible blow, both to the person with the disease and their loved ones. For this reason, the Society produced a booklet in the fall of 2005 called Living with Cancer, which, in addition to explaining the disease, covers the range of emotions that can be experienced, how life can be changed by a cancer diagnosis and where to find reassurance and support. This guide is a worthwhile read for anyone struggling with cancer or caring for a friend or family member who has the disease. www.cancer.ca While it is more reassuring to speak with an information specialist when you want to find out more about cancer, most of our information is available on the Society’s Web site. More and more people are consulting our site for information on cancer and to learn about the Canadian Cancer Society, its activities and services, and how to help out by either making a donation or becoming a volunteer. Nearly 2 million visitors browsed www.cancer.ca in 2005-2006. To make sure that www.cancer.ca was meeting the needs of people coping with cancer, we conducted an extensive consultation exercise early in the year, which led us to redesign the site to make it easier to browse and ensure that it accurately reflects the Society’s communication and promotion tools. Near you We could not meet our information goals without the generous contribution of the numerous volunteers and employees in our 14 regional offices who are there to hand out Canadian Cancer Society publications and give out information on the different services available. Photo Charles-Henri Debeur 2005-2006 at a glance www.cancer.ca • Nearly 2.9 million visitors 1 888 939-3333 • Over 1.1 million first-time visitors • Close to 70,000 enquiries • 1,249 terms in the cancer glossary • Number of publications sent out: 552,430 • 17 chapters of the Canadian Cancer Encyclopedia™ available online • Services provided in English and French, as well as 110 other languages, thanks to CanTalk • Number of resources listed in the community services directory: 4,694 Publications • Close to 50 brochures available in English and French. Some have even been translated into other languages. 11 ... … being able to talk to someone “who’s been there”, someone who can share their victor y over cancer and their will to live, gives renewed hope to people coping with the disease. Photo Lad Kadyszewski It is very important for people diagnosed with cancer and their caregivers to be able to count on support from those close to them. But sometimes they prefer to speak with someone who has gone through a similar experience, or they want to be able to open up about their fears and concerns to someone who is able to listen… just listen. Cancer J’écoute Cancer J’écoute is the Canadian Cancer Society’s telephone support service. In Quebec, it is funded by the Fondation Jean Marc Paquette. In 2005-2006, our first full year of operation, more than 500 matches were made. In nearly 80% of the cases, it was women with cancer who called upon the service. Volunteers trained to listen Cancer J’écoute follows strict national standards in terms of how it operates, confidentiality, and the selection, training and coaching of volunteers. Volunteers are given a two-day basic training session that covers: active listening, receiving a cancer diagnosis, the psychosocial aspects of cancer, emotional protection of the volunteer, crisis management, etc. This year, more than 50 people took this training. Fifty-nine other volunteers participated in continuous training sessions. ... 12 1 888 939-3333: one-stop access to information and support By opting to use the Cancer Information Service telephone number (1 888 939-3333), the Quebec Division provides one-stop access to information and support for people living with cancer. First, an information specialist responds to the caller’s information needs and then, if necessary, matches the caller with a Cancer J’écoute volunteer, who will take over and focus on active listening. There is such an important synergy between these two services that they were consolidated under one department this year. There are so many benefits to this set-up, in terms of customer service and promotion, that other Society divisions are considering following Quebec’s lead. Volunteers who share their experience It is important to highlight the exceptional contribution made by a number of Cancer J’écoute volunteers who have, on certain occasions, agreed to talk about their cancer experience in an effort to support the Canadian Cancer Society’s media initiatives. These individuals have shared their cancer stories and feelings with a variety of audiences. For many of them, it is a way of putting a face on cancer, on the progress being made in research, on the clinical trials, on early detection and on the quality of life after a battle with the disease. These faces and stories give hope to people living with cancer. The Jacques-Cantin Lodge The Quebec Division officially named its Lodge the Jacques-Cantin Lodge as part of the building’s 15th anniversary celebrations. This was a tribute to Dr. Jacques Cantin, an eminent surgeon and oncologist who dedicated his life to fighting cancer and who personally lost his battle against the disease. During his 30 years as a Canadian Cancer Society volunteer, Dr. Cantin held a number of positions, including President of the Quebec Division and National President. Dr. Cantin was the driving force behind the creation of the Lodge; he also chaired the first Daffodil Ball, an event originally established to fund the building. To date, over 5,000 people who have had to leave home and come to Montreal for their radiation treatment have benefited from the accommodation provided by the Canadian Cancer Society. This year, close to 700 people were able to take advantage of the Lodge’s comforting environment and speak with other guests who, like them, are battling cancer. Financial and practical assistance At the Canadian Cancer Society, support for people living with cancer goes beyond emotional support and lodging. Again this year, hundreds of people were able to rely on the Society for wigs, temporary breast prostheses, dressings and various other items. Photo Charles-Henri Debeur 13 ... … we are lobbying to curb the incidence of cancer and its mor tality rate and lessen the burden of people living with the disease. Cancer: A looming crisis Canada’s aging baby boomers and growing population are propelling the country into a cancer crisis. And Quebec is already there: A report by the ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux published in spring 2005 stated that cancer has become the leading cause of death in Quebec1. More than one person in three will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime and one in four will die from the disease. According to the Canadian Cancer Statistics 20052, an estimated 149,000 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed (37,400 in Quebec) and 69,500 deaths from cancer will occur in Canada (18,800 in Quebec). The Canadian Cancer Society is perceived as a credible and powerful organization across the country, and our volunteers, employees, donors and even the general public expect us to assume a leadership role in the face of these findings. This is why the Canadian Cancer Society defends public health interests and advocates for cancer control, both alone and with other groups, at the local, provincial, national and international level. Political pressure Canadian Strategy for Cancer Control At the end of 2005 during the federal election campaign, Canadian Cancer Society volunteers and employees worked very hard to secure support for the Canadian Strategy for Cancer Control from the different political parties. The Conservative party pledged $260 million to implement the Strategy, and the Liberal and New Democratic parties also pledged support for a national cancer strategy. ... 14 This backing was a clear indication that differences can be set aside when it comes to working together to fight a disease affecting an ever-growing number of people in Canada. This year, we will see if these election promises hold true. The Canadian Strategy for Cancer Control is a coordinated, comprehensive initiative to fight a disease that is weakening Canada’s health system in every province. The Strategy includes the funding of cancer prevention, research, screening, treatments, as well as palliative care and support. The public has been invited to join the Canadian Cancer Society and speak with one voice in favour of implementing the Canadian Strategy for Cancer Control by signing an online petition at www.cancer.ca. Coalition Priorité Cancer au Québec: Second forum on cancer, Mobilisons nos forces In Quebec, the Canadian Cancer Society pursued its involvement with the Coalition Priorité Cancer, a coalition that fights for the implementation of the Programme québécois de lutte contre le cancer 3 and the creation of a central organization to monitor and coordinate the fight against cancer. In April 2005, 250 health professionals and community organization representatives dedicated to the fight against cancer got together at the second forum on cancer organized by the Coalition Priorité Cancer under the theme Mobilisons nos forces. Wanting to recommend solutions rather than just criticize the problems with the current system, the Coalition used a study it had commissioned on the ways and means of better coordinating the fight against cancer in Quebec as a framework for its forum. The event also spotlighted commendable practices that healthcare stakeholders have implemented in their communities or hospitals. Throughout 2005, in addition to the forum, the Coalition pursued its activities and pressure tactics by: • monitoring the actions of the Direction de la lutte contre le cancer; • lobbying government authorities. Quebec tobacco law We know smoking kills. It accounts for about 85% of the deaths caused from lung cancer, the leading cause of cancer death. We also know that smoking is addictive. This is why we have been working so hard on tobacco control for so many years. The year 2005 will be remembered for the unanimous passing of Bill 112 on tobacco by the National Assembly. It is one of the world’s most comprehensive tobacco control bills, making Quebec an international role model. The new law takes effect May 31, 2006. The Quebec Division had presented a brief to the parliamentary commission, adding further strength to this law. Together. Strong. The larger the team of people exerting pressure, the faster we will see change and results. In addition to the Canadian Strategy for Cancer Control and the Coalition Priorité Cancer au Québec, the Quebec Division works with several other organizations and coalitions, including: • The Conseil québécois sur le tabac et la santé (CQTS) • The Coalition pour le contrôle du tabac • The Réseau action santé • The Chronic Disease Prevention Alliance of Canada • Various regional organizations including cancer control committees 1 National Report on the Health Status of the Population of Quebec – Producing Health, ministère de la Santé et des Services Sociaux, April 2005 2 Produced by: The Canadian Cancer Society, the National Cancer Institute of Canada, Statistics Canada, et al. 3 Produced by: ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux, Government of Quebec, 1998 15 ... … but at least 50% of cancers can be prevented through healthy living and policies that protect the public. Cancer is a disease that starts in one cell. The cell behaves abnormally and starts growing out of control, ultimately forming a malignant tumour. There are as many cancers as there are parts of the body. It is said cancer is more than 200 diseases. There is no single cause of cancer but some factors appear to increase or reduce the risk of developing it. Some factors can be avoided – like smoking – and others can't, like age and family history. Making healthy life choices can reduce the risk of developing the disease. Prevention Prevention is everyone’s responsibility. It’s up to each individual to adopt a healthy lifestyle, and up to the Canadian Cancer Society to get things moving. It’s our responsibility to lobby for public health policies, to educate the public and raise awareness about healthy living. Cancer prevention involves: • taking measures to reduce the risks of developing cancer; • taking the necessary steps to detect cancer early in order to minimize its impact; • educating the public so people are the least exposed as possible to factors that increase the risk of developing cancer. Seven Steps to Health The Seven Steps to Health are the basis of the Canadian Cancer Society’s prevention strategy. These Steps are: • the lifestyle choices individuals can make to reduce their risk of of developing cancer; • the health guidelines the Society strives to promote. ... 16 The Canadian Cancer Society’s Seven Steps to Health: • Be a non-smoker and avoid second-hand smoke • Eat healthily • Be physically active • Protect yourself from the sun • Follow cancerscreening guidelines • Advise your doctor or dentist of any changes to your state of health • Handle hazardous materials with care Major awareness and mobilization campaigns on healthy lifestyle choices Quit to Win! Challenge and Défi Santé 5/30 Since we know tobacco is linked to nearly 30% of cancers, the Quebec Division pursued its involvement in the Quit to Win! Challenge for the sixth year. In 2005, 32,000 smokers made the commitment to stop smoking for at least six weeks. To date, more than 190,000 people have taken part in the Challenge. In 2005, the Acti-Menu group–the organizers of the Quit to Win! Challenge–invited the Quebec Division to become a partner of the Défi Santé 5/30, which it did! This wide-scale mobilization campaign urged Quebecers to eat at least five servings of vegetables and fruits and get at least 30 minutes of exercise a day. Thanks to an unprecedented media partnership, 50,000 participants signed up for 12 weeks. Support for smokers who want to quit The Canadian Cancer Society goes beyond speaking out about the dangers of smoking and conducting awareness campaigns. Because tobacco kills and causes addiction, the Society also assists smokers in their efforts to kick the habit. In 2005-2006, the Quebec Division maintained its commitment to the J’arrête 1 helpline. Our 13 information agents answered close to 15,000 calls for support and 2,500 calls for the Quit to Win! Challenge. Local initiatives all over Quebec Our volunteers and employees are brimming with ideas and activities for promoting health. A wide range of activities was organized throughout Quebec in 2005-2006. Dr. Christiane Laberge on tour A Canadian Cancer Society volunteer and physician, Dr. Christiane Laberge is well known for her frequent appearances in the media. She toured Quebec to talk about prevention and the Seven Steps to Health. Sun Squads In many regions of Quebec, the Sun Squads continued their sun safety awareness activities for kids at daycare centres, day camps, festivals and other gatherings. Conferences and information booths Throughout the province, our volunteers and staff responded to requests for information from people wanting to hear about health and cancer. They attended conferences and shows, manned information booths, visited corporate offices, and were even at the Relay For Life, busily promoting healthy lifestyle choices and ways to reduce the risk of developing cancer. Sharing our know-how: Canada-China Mission Because cancer strikes randomly and knows no borders, the Canadian Cancer Society is keen to share its know-how and experience. In 2005-2006, the Quebec Division continued its cancer-education and tobacco-control mission in China. Canadian Cancer Statistics 2005 The publication of the Canadian Cancer Statistics 20052 in April was much anticipated by professionals and organizations involved in cancer, as well as by the media. The Statistics contained a section specifically on cancer prevention. The Quebec Division enjoyed excellent media coverage in Quebec with 35 radio interviews, 21 television appearances and 9 articles in the major dailies featuring the statistics and our spokespeople. 1 A smoking cessation information and support hotline managed jointly with the Conseil québécois sur le tabac et la santé and funded by Quebec’s ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux 2 Canadian Cancer Society/National Cancer Institute of Canada, Toronto, Canada, 2005 17 ... … thank s to those who give us f inancial suppor t , we can change things. A new record: $16,314,541 for the fight against cancer Thanks to the generosity of our many donors and sponsors and the dedicated fundraising efforts of our volunteers and employees, we were able to allocate more money in 2005-2006 to achieving our mission. Whether it is by buying a bunch of daffodils, donating a handful of cash during a door-to-door campaign, sponsoring the Daffodil Ball, participating in a charitable activity or making an In Memoriam donation in honour of a loved one who has died from cancer, a growing number of Quebecers are responding generously to the Canadian Cancer Society’s different fundraising initiatives. We offer a variety of donation methods, enabling people to choose a convenient way to support a cause that is very important to them. After all, if more than one person in three is expected to develop cancer in their lifetime, there will be even more people dealing with the terrible blow of learning that a loved one has been struck by this disease. Relay For Life In May and June 2005, close to 11,700 participants turned out for the Relay For Life. A total of 35 events were held, bringing together families, friends, and co-workers, young and old alike. They took turns doing laps all night long, sponsored by over 100,000 donors. In Quebec, the Relay For Life raised over $2.6 million. The Relay For Life is the Canadian Cancer Society’s signature event, and this was the fundraising activity that saw the biggest growth in 2005 (90%). It became the Quebec Division’s primary source of revenue, surpassing the Daffodil Ball. ... 18 Highlights of Quebec’s 2005 Relay For Life: • 35 events • 11,669 participants • 3,008 survivors • 62,551 luminaries honouring a loved one • 1,909 volunteers The Daffodil Ball The Daffodil Ball is a unique, internationally renowned event. It is the most important single event benefiting cancer in Canada. Corporations from Quebec, the rest of Canada and even from abroad contribute to the Ball, providing substantial financial support that would otherwise be difficult, even impossible, to obtain. In 2005, the Daffodil Ball hit a new record, raising more than $2.5 million in a single evening! Daffodil Days The Canadian Cancer Society’s Daffodil Days kick off the annual campaign in early April and mark the arrival of spring. This year, the Daffodil Days raised nearly $2 million thanks to the work of some 12,000 volunteers who sold daffodils at over 2,600 points of sale in Quebec. Special activities Tens of thousands of people supported the cause by taking part in one of our many benefit activities: gourmet gatherings, exclusive shopping evenings, golf tournaments, bowl-o-thons, Jail-N-Bail, Cops for Cancer, etc. Revenue generated from participation in these events and sponsorships amounted to $1.8 million. In Memoriam donations and planned giving Some people prefer to choose a specific time to contribute to the cause: when they lose a loved one to cancer or when arranging their finances or estate. In 2005-2006, a total of $1.8 million was raised through In Memoriam donations and $1.5 million through planned gifts. Annual campaign The annual fundraising campaign generates revenue from door-to-door canvassing, direct-mail solicitation, corporate gifts, monthly giving and employee payroll deductions. Again this year, numerous individuals and companies answered the call, helping raise $2.4 million. Healthpartners: In 2005, the Quebec Division initiated a round of intensive negotiations with the provincial government in collaboration with the other Healthpartners member organizations. After several years of discussions, this past year saw Healthpartners gain access to the provincial public service. Provincial civil servants now have the option of making a charitable donation to Healthpartners (or to a specific organization in the group) through payroll deductions. Fund distribution 2005-2006 : $16,314,541 • 2004-2005 : $15,281,962 ■ 2005-2006 ■ 2004-2005 $2,500 $2,371 $1,528 $1,525 $1,658 $1,774 $1,799 $1,814 $1,805 $1,921 $2,251 $2,369 $1,998 $500 $2,253 $1,000 $2,550 $1,500 $1,372 $2,000 $2,608 Dollars Collected $3,000 $Relay For Life Ball and Major Donations Fundraising Campaigns Daffodil Days In Memoriam Donations Other Special Events Other Revenue Planned Giving Sources of Funds 19 ... … with our continued growth, we are able to do more for the cause. The unflagging work of our volunteers and employees, and the generosity of our donors and sponsors enabled the Quebec Division to boost its revenues by 6.7% in 2005-2006 to achieve a record high of $16.3 million. These dollars will go towards research, prevention, information, support and advocacy to help ensure that fewer people suffer the harsh reality of cancer, and to control the impact of this disease. Outstanding results Relay For Life revenues increased by over 90%, from $1.4 million in 2004-2005 to $2.6 million in 2005-2006. This Canadian Cancer Society signature event is now the Quebec Division’s key fundraising activity, outdoing the Daffodil Ball, which has been the leading source of revenue for the last number of years. The Daffodil Ball nonetheless raised 13.2% more this year, for a total of more than $2.5 million. Revenues from the Division’s fundraising campaigns and Daffodil Days also rose by 5.2% and 4%, generating $2.4 million and $2 million, respectively. Planned giving, a less predictable source of revenue, dropped 35.6%. Funds earmarked for our five priorities In 2005-2006, the Quebec Division contributed $4.3 million to research, which was 23% or $800,000 more than last year. The amount allocated to prevention increased by 13.2% or $155,000, in response to the Board of Directors’ request to dedicate greater efforts to prevention initiatives. The services provided by the Canadian Cancer Society enhance the quality of life of people living with cancer, helping ease their battle with the disease. In 2005-2006, the Quebec Division allocated $3.1 million to cancer information services, lodging, transportation, financial and practical assistance, and the telephone support service, Cancer J’écoute. An unrestricted surplus to, one day, make cancer history In 2005-2006, the Canadian Cancer Society decided to use its unrestricted surplus to provide additional funding to the fight against cancer by creating a stability and initiatives fund, which should enable us to make headway in our long-term battle against this disease. By working together, we are strong. This means every dollar that is raised, every volunteer who donates time, and every donor who believes in our cause can make a difference and help us create a world where no one fears cancer. On behalf of the Canadian Cancer Society, we sincerely thank you. Photo Charles-Henri Debeur More than one in three people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. And the lives of an even bigger number of people will be deeply affected by this disease. So, the fight against cancer is a cause that rallies a lot of people who, each in their own way, want to help make a difference. The more visibility the Canadian Cancer Society achieves at the provincial, regional and local level: • the more people, companies, foundations and institutions will think about getting involved or about making a donation to the Society; • the more use people living with cancer will make of its services and lessen their burden; • the more organizations and coalitions will seek the Society’s help in “moving issues forward”; • the more easily our messages about cancer, its prevention and treatments will reach the general public. All the more reason to strive even harder to promote the Canadian Cancer Society, its services, initiatives and main fundraising activities! The visibility that the organization gains in Quebec is critical to achieving its mission. The Canadian Cancer Society is a well-known and credible organization. This, alone, should suffice to create a strong presence in the Quebec media, but it was thanks to the tremendous generosity of corporations, the media and individuals who chose to support the cause and promote the organization that the Quebec Division achieved unprecedented visibility in 2005-2006. ... 22 Volunteers The Canadian Cancer Society’s primary ambassadors are its many volunteers. These dedicated souls, who, among other things, campaign door to door, solicit sponsorships for the Relay For Life and sell daffodils, are proud to promote the Society, and its services, activities and messages. Personal stories from people with cancer Some people are willing to talk about their own experience with cancer. They consider it a way of supporting the cause and giving hope to others who are coping with the disease. In 2005-2006, many such individuals shared their stories, which appeared in direct mail pieces, on our Web site, in Relay Rap and in the media. Their moving accounts help put a face to cancer. Cause gets support from the “stars” A growing number of TV, music and sports stars are associating themselves with the Canadian Cancer Society, lending their voices to our ad campaigns, acting as spokespeople, and even hosting benefit events. Their support ensures media coverage for the Canadian Cancer Society and sometimes even boosts participation at our events. A year of excellent media coverage Seeing the Canadian Cancer Society promoted on TV, in the press or on the Web, and hearing about it on the radio is a powerful form of visibility: a huge number of people see that we are out there and hear our messages. In addition to the many interviews granted throughout the year on a variety of cancer-related topics and Society activities–with the presentation of the Canadian Cancer Statistics 2005 front and centre–the Canadian Cancer Society also enjoyed other coverage in the Quebec media in 2005-2006. Quit to Win! Challenge and Défi Santé 5/30 The Quebec Division has been affiliated with Acti-Menu and its Quit to Win! Challenge for the last six years, and in 2005 it took part in the first Défi Santé 5/30. This event challenged the Quebec public to get 30 minutes of exercise and eat at least five servings of vegetables and fruits a day. Through a unique media partnership with the Défi Santé 5/30, the Canadian Cancer Society was featured on the TV shows Courir la pomme and Louise à votre service, in a number of 30-second clips aired from March to December 2005, and in a variety of print material promoting the Défi Santé 5/30. Two ad campaigns Promoting our services helps increase the number of users, and promoting our fundraising activities facilitates the work of our volunteers and employees and improves revenues. This is why the Quebec Division produced two ad campaigns in 2005-2006. One advertised the Relay For Life and the other, entitled “Cancer Delivers a Terrible Blow,” publicized the Society’s information and support services. These two ad campaigns were made possible thanks to the generous involvement of artists, production companies, producers, agencies and a number of suppliers who devoted themselves to our cause. The campaigns were broadcast thanks to solid support from the media, whose unsparing efforts resulted in outstanding visibility for the Canadian Cancer Society. To all those who help the Canadian Cancer Society make an impact in Quebec, we say a huge THANK YOU! 23 ... … thousands of dedicated, action-oriented people are working for the cause. In Québec, the Canadian Cancer Society pursues its mission thanks to the generous help of its 25,000 volunteers from some 220 sections (cities and towns). Our volunteers What motivates them Some of our volunteers are cancer survivors themselves. Some have joined the Canadian Cancer Society because they are helping or have helped a family member, friend, or colleague through a cancer experience. Some are volunteering in honour of a loved one who lost their battle, others in celebration of a victory over the disease. Some people volunteer for professional reasons or because their school is teaching them to volunteer for a cause that is important to them. Some volunteer simply because they are healthy and it’s their way of saying thanks! No matter what motivates their involvement in the Society, our volunteers are all caring individuals committed to the cause. How they contribute Most of our volunteers focus their involvement on our fundraising campaigns. Others choose to contribute in a different way: by providing support to people living with cancer, by talking to the media about their own experience with the disease, by promoting healthy living, by doing advocacy work, etc. Typically, our volunteers are extremely flexible people who do a bit of everything because, no matter what gesture they make, they are making a contribution to the fight against cancer. The Quebec Division couldn’t do as much as it does without their help. We are extremely grateful to them.
