LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CHAIRMAN
2011-2012
ANNUAL REPORT
Dear Friends,
How would you respond to the question on the front cover?
Today’s workplace is changing and our children need to be prepared. Technology, globalization, and the trend
toward organizations with less hierarchy are creating work environments that require 21st century skills – or soft
skills. These skills include interpersonal communication, problem-solving, self-direction, and team building.
Although these skills have been in the workplace for years there is a greater emphasis on them today. Team
building now includes developing working relationships with co-workers and clients located around the world.
And with today’s flatter organizations, employees need to self-direct and be entrepreneurial in their thinking.
Steve Sorensen
The answer to the question on the front cover is simple – Junior Achievement.
Junior Achievement is a recognized leader in providing relevant real-world and hands-on learning experiences
that equip our children to become the productive employees and self-sufficient citizens employers are seeking.
In fact, 96 percent of JA alumni report that Junior Achievement made them more confident about how to work
effectively in a team environment, compared to 82 percent of non-JA students. In addition, 88 percent of alumni
say JA helped them hone their decision-making skills, and 85 percent indicate that they have strengthened their
interpersonal communication skills through JA.
Teaching our children 21st century skills is critical to the economic success of our community and nation. Junior
Achievement is committed to being the key stakeholder that will prepare them to succeed.
To our partners, we thank you for your support in serving more than 55,000 students this past school year. You
can be assured your investment is helping prepare a well-educated workforce the 21st century is demanding.
Barbara VenHorst
Sincerely,
Steven K. Sorensen

2011-2012
ANNUAL REPORT
entrepreneurship
financial literacy
JA In-School Programs
Elementary School:
Middle School:
JA Ourselves uses compelling stories read aloud by the volunteer, along
with hands-on activities to demonstrate helping, working, earning,
and saving.
JA America Works® provides students with examples of how business
and entrepreneurship affected the economic development of the United
States during the 19th century.
JA Our Families™ emphasizes the roles people play in the local economy and engages students with activities about needs, wants, jobs, tools
and skills, and interdependence.
JA Economics for Success® explores personal finance and students’
education and career options based on their skills, interests, and values.
It also demonstrates the economic benefits of staying in school.
JA Our Community™ explores the interdependent roles of workers in a
community, the work they perform, and how communities work.
JA Global Marketplace® provides practical information about the global
economy and its effect on students’ lives.
JA Our City™ studies careers, the skills people need to work in specific
careers, and how businesses contribute to a city.
JA It’s My Business!® emphasizes entrepreneurship while providing
a strong focus on social studies, reading, and writing skills. Students
are encouraged to use critical thinking to learn entrepreneurial skills that
support positive attitudes as they explore and enhance their career
aspirations.
™
JA More than Money™ teaches students about earning, spending,
sharing, and saving money, and businesses they can start or jobs they
can perform to earn money.
JA Our Region™ introduces students to entrepreneurship and how
entrepreneurs use resources to produce goods and services in a community.
Students solve problems by weighing risks and rewards.
JA Our Nation™ provides practical information about businesses’ need for
individuals who can meet the demands of the job market, including
high-growth, high-demand jobs. It introduces the concept of globalization
of business as it relates to production materials and the need for students
to be entrepreneurial in their thinking.
JA World® Programs
JA BizTown® introduces 5th grade students to economics and
business starting with four weeks of teacher-led classroom instruction,
followed by a daylong, hands-on experience where students apply the
learned concepts in a life-like community at JA World. Students run
various businesses, earn paychecks, open and manage bank accounts,
and become full-fledged consumers making purchases at other
student-run businesses. The program vividly illustrates the connection
between hard work and tangible success while allowing students to
gain firsthand understanding of their roles as citizens, consumers,
and workers.
Sponsors: The Amy Helpenstell Foundation; Bechtel Trusts & Foundation; Bridgestone
Bandag, LLC; Carver Pump Company; MidAmerican Energy Company; Modern
Woodmen of America; Quad-City Times; and SSAB Iowa, Inc.
JA Finance Park® demonstrates to 8th grade students the importance
of living within their financial means. Students visit JA World after
completing four weeks of teacher-led classroom instruction. When
they arrive on site, students receive a life scenario, including a job,
salary, and family situation to use as the basis of their simulation
experience. With their real-life personas, they learn how to construct
and adhere to a personal budget. This eye-opening experience gives
students a solid foundation on which to build effective personal
financial habits for life.
High School:
JA Banks in Action® teaches high school students the principles of the
banking industry and familiarizes them with the challenges of successfully
operating a bank in a competitive environment.
JA Be Entrepreneurial® challenges students to start their own entrepreneurial
venture while still in high school. It provides useful, practical content to
assist students to transition into becoming productive, contributing members
of society.
JA Business Ethics® fosters students’ ethical decision-making as they
prepare to enter the workforce and take part in the global marketplace.
JA Careers with a Purpose® introduces students to the importance of
seeking careers that help them realize their life potential and noble purpose.
JA Company Program® analyzes and explores personal opportunities and
responsibilities within a student-led company.
JA Economics® examines the fundamental concepts of micro-, macro-,
and international economics.
JA Exploring Economics® fosters lifelong skills and knowledge about
how an economy works, including micro-, macro-, personal, and international
economics.
JA Personal Finance® focuses on earning money; spending money wisely
through budgeting; saving and investing money; using credit cautiously; and
protecting personal finances.
JA Success Skills® meets the needs of a diverse group of high school
students by providing engaging, academically enriching, and experientiallearning sessions in work-readiness education and career perspectives.
JA Titan® introduces critical economics and management decisions
through an interactive simulation.

I didn’t learn from JA, I
discovered. If it were not for
me “playing” editor for a day
during JA BizTown I don’t
think I would have chosen
my degree in Journalism
and Mass Communications.
I realized after my day at JA
BizTown that I enjoyed working
with people as well as
communicating every day.
JA had a huge impact on
my life, it truly had a major
influence on my career.

JUNIOR ACHIEVEMEN T O F TH E H E ARTL AN D
Junior Achievement has helped me prepare for
the future by getting me thinking about what it is
I would like to do with my life. Because of Junior
Achievement, I know already that I really, really, really
like business. I also like being in charge of something.
I want to continue learning how business works.
I would like to have my own company some day.
Evin Ersan, JA Student, Age 10
