4th Fund Raising Congress Speakers 1. Atty. Antonio Oposa, Jr. President Law of Nature Foundation Antonio A. Oposa, Jr. is one of Asia’s leading voices in the global arena of Environmental Law. He founded the School of the SEAs (Sea and Earth Advocates) in Bantayan Island, Philippines. The School is completely powered by renewable energy, completely recycles water and solid wastes, and is an experiential learning center for sustainable living. Atty. Oposa is the legal adviser and international environmental negotiator of the Federated States of Micronesia to the Montreal Protocol and to the climate change negotiations. He is an Environmental Law consultant to development agencies such as the Asian Development Bank and the World Bank. For his work, he received The Outstanding Young Man of the Philippines (TOYM) award, and the highest United Nations award in the field of the Environment -- the UNEP Global Roll of Honor. He is the first and only Asian to receive the International Environmental Law Award from the Washington DC-based Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL). “For his path-breaking and passionate crusade to engage Filipinos in acts of enlightened citizenship that maximize the power of the Law to protect and nurture the environment, for themselves, their children, and generations yet unborn,” he received the 2009 Ramon Magsaysay Award. 2. Ms. Vanessa Tobin Country Representative United Nations Children’s Fund Ms. Vanessa Tobin is responsible and leads all the activities and functions of UNICEF to promote and protect the rights of children and women in the Philippines which include planning and implementation of the Country Programme for Children; advocacy and resource mobilization; and, emergency response. Ms. Tobin joined UNICEF in 1981 as Assistant Project Officer in Kathmandu, Nepal and then worked for other ACCORD, a UK-based NGO in Sudan and then with the British Government in Lesotho. She rejoined UNICEF in 1988 as Project Officer for Water and Health in Peshawar, Pakistan; then was reassigned to New York as Senior Project Officer for Water, Environment and Sanitation (WES). She was transferred to Cairo as Senior Programme Officer (Deputy Representative) with one-year study break thereafter, for her second Master’s degree. In July 1999 she was reassigned to New York Headquarters as Senior Adviser for Health, until her promotion to Chief of WES in February 2001. Since July 2006 and prior to her assignment in the Philippines, Ms. Tobin has served as Deputy Director of the Programme Division in UNICEF New York Headquarters. 3. Mr. Enrico Joaquin Publics and Ministry Director World Vision Boris Joaquin heads the donor (public and corporate) engagement of World Vision in the Philippines, serving the poor children and their communities for their well being through sustainable development. Since he joined the foundation in 2005, fundraising has consistently shown improvement in performance. Boris led partnership development with corporate entities locally and across the Asia Pacific region. His team's work is to maintain and sustain relationships in all levels of the partnership with the goal of increasing value and giving -- thus helping more! His leadership generates high trust results in lower costs of operation. An active public speaker, teacher and writer, Boris Joaquin is one of the few accredited facilitators for "The Servant Leader Workshop" He has been facilitating this seminar for various companies, foundations, and NGOs for the past three years. 4. Mr. David Liban, Jr. Acquisition Manager World Vision David “dabs” Liban Jr. has been working with World Vision for the past 24 years now. During his 11 years of field work, Dabs gained community knowledge that certainly helps him now in raising funds for poor communities. As part of the Communications Team of World Vision from 1996 to 2001, Dabs has helped marketing teams and other World Vision offices in other countries raise funds for the Philippines by packaging photo and story materials during disaster relief situations. In 2002, Dabs joined the fund-raising team of World Vision Philippines. He spearheaded the first WV Mall Booth campaign with SM in 2003. As the Senior Marketing Manager, Dabs is now involved in acquiring and maintaining major corporate donors and cultivating WV’s celebrity sponsors. Dabs is recently tasked to initiate WV’s Filipino Diaspora engagement. 5. Dr. Jaime Galvez-Tan Executive Director National Institutes of Health – Philippines Dr. Jaime Z. Galvez Tan is a Professor of the University of the Philippines College of Medicine; and the President of Health Futures Foundation, Inc. He was Vice Chancellor for Research of the University of the Philippines Manila and Executive Director of the National Institutes of Health Philippines 2002-2005. He served as Regional Adviser in Health and Nutrition for East Asia and the Pacific Region of UNICEF in Bangkok in 1996. He served the Philippine Department of Health as Secretary in 1995 and as Undersecretary and Chief of Staff from 1992-94. Dr. Galvez Tan is co-writer of 7 books and his life history has been incorporated in two books: Revolution from the Heart by Niall O’Brien, 1987 & Beyond the Hospital: A Concept of Community Based Medical Practice by Grace De La Costa-Ymzon, 1994. His foremost distinctions are: One of the Outstanding Bedans of the Century 1901-2001 San Beda College; 1998 Community Service Award, U.P. Alumni Association; and 1974 Excellence in Leadership Award, U.P. College of Medicine. 6. Ms. Veronica Villavicencio Executive Director Peace & Equity Foundation As the Executive Director of the Peace Equity Access for Community Empowerment Foundation, Inc., Veronica Villavicencio manages and supervises the Foundation’s grant administration and loans for poverty reduction and social and community development projects. She also develops, implements and evaluates strategic programs together with networking and forming partnerships for the Foundation. Prior to being the Lead Convenor (Secretary) in 2004, Ve was the Deputy Director (Undersecretary) of the National Anti-Poverty Commission from 2001 to 2004. She was a consultant for the SEAMEO Center for Research and Graduate Studies in Agriculture (SEARCA), UNESCO Gender and the Culture of Peace Project in Jakarta, Biodiversity Conservation Program of the University of the Philippines, and National Commission on the Role of Filipino Women (NCRFW). She was also the Grants Development Director of the Foundation for the Philippine Environment (FPE), a Program Director for the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) and a Program Coordinator of the APPROTECH ASIA: The Asian Alliance of Appropriate Technology Practitioners. 7. Mr. Manny Blas Manager The Mind Museum Manny Blas is currently Vice-President of Ayala Land Inc., and is assigned as Managing Director of Bonifacio Foundation Inc. Manny's current project is to build the first world class science museum in the country, to be called The Mind Museum, and will be located in Bonifacio Global City. It is a P 1 billion project and he is now in the middle of a major fundraising campaign to fund the construction of the museum. He is also the Head of Marketing and Community Relations of Fort Bonifacio Development Corporation. Manny's background is in Marketing and General Management with his corporate career culminating in his assignment as Regional President of Sara Lee for Southeast Asia. After 23 years, he retired from corporate life in 2000 to complete a Masteral Degree in Theology and to devote his, and his wife's, time in full time church ministry work, particularly in working with the youth, and in teaching theology in De La Salle University in Dasmariñas. In 2007, he decided to go back to corporate life, but with the intent of continuing his passion for education. Thus, Manny considers his present project to build The Mind Museum as the best of both worlds in the corporate and educational fields. 8. Mark Ruiz Managing Director Hapinoy After graduating from the Ateneo de Manila with a degree in BS Management Engineering, Mark Ruiz spent 7 years in Unilever Philippines, rising through varying positions within Customer Development. He eventually left as part of senior management in order to chase his dream of making a difference, as a social business entrepreneur. That dream, succinctly put, is simply to create valuable Filipino jobs. As such, for the past 4 years since resigning, Mark has pursued his passions of innovation, entrepreneurship, social development, and education. He is currently energized by companies he has cofounded, currently serving as Managing Director of MicroVentures / Hapinoy, a microenterprise development social business enterprise; Founding Partner and Board Member of Rags2Riches, a social business enterprise helping a Payatas-based community create fashion-designer items from recycled rags; Founding Partner of the WhyNot?Forum, an innovation website on InspiringFilipino Ingenuity. Mark is also the Chief Marketing Inoventor of InoventDesign, a research, design, and development firm, as well as Part-time faculty in the Ateneo de Manila, teaching a class entitled Business Innovation Management. 9. Ms. Pauline Bellarmino Resource Mobilization/Partnership Manager CARD MRI Ms. Jean Pauline A. Belarmino is the Resource Mobilization/Partnership Manager of the CARD Mutually Reinforcing Institutions. She is responsible for the efficient supervision of the different programs of the Resource Mobilization/Partnership Office of the CARD MRI such as the DAR-CARD Inc. Partnership Program: cooperatives technical assistance program, CARD MRI Wholesale Fund Program, CARD-SRPC Microfinance Project (Pangasinan), Educational Loan Program in Masbate and Occidental Mindoro, and resource mobilization agenda, among others. She is also in-charge of the consistent compliance on all reports and documentation requirements related to CARD MRI partnerships. She has been part of various consultancies and technical assistance assignments of the CARD MRI groups in Vietnam, Indonesia and other local partners in the Philippines since 2005 to date for the conduct of market demand researches, international microfinance and microinsurance surveys, technical assistance packages and reports, and feasibility studies. As of July 2010, CARD MRI is serving 1,160,543 clients nationwide with total loan portfolio of Php4.0B and still growing. 10. Ms. Cristy Fuentes Deputy Country Manager DKT Philippines A social marketing practitioner for more than 15 years, Cristy Fuentes is the Deputy Country Director of DKT Philippines, Inc., a duly registered local NGO that has been undertaking the Philippine Social Marketing Program since 1990. She is also the Corporate Secretary and Board Member of DKT who upholds DKT’s motto of “Making a Difference Today”. Ms. Fuentes is a recipient of various awards like the Cultural and Study Exchange Scholarship from the Rotary International, Certificate of Excellence from DKT International, Inc. Washington D.C. USA, Certificate of Recognition (Letter of Commendation) from the Academy for Educational Development – AIDSCOM, Washington D.C. USA. She is an advocate of DKT’s social “enterprise approach” which provides a sustainable program of product delivery. This “enterprise approach” operates with a focus on efficiency and productivity – and is eager and prepared to undertake innovative, important, and oftentimes difficult tasks to improve human welfare. 11. Ms. Cynthia Reantaso-Bernabe Founder Wishworks Event Management Cynthia Reantaso-Bernabe holds the distinction of being the first international graduate of the awardwinning Event Leadership Executive Program of Temple University’s School of Tourism and Hospitality Management in Philadelphia, USA. With over 20 years of experience in managing events, Cynthia is presently the Program Director for a post bachelor Diploma Program in Professional Event Management at the De La Salle – College of Saint Benilde, School of Professional and Continuing Education (SPaCE). She is concurrently a member of the Faculty and a Lecturer for Event Management and Marketing Courses in BS and MA degree programs. Already a highly trained and experienced event manager in the field of social and corporate events, Cynthia continues to broaden her Event Management practice in the academe. She organizes seminars and workhops and acts as a Facilitator. Among the topics she teaches are Introduction to Professional Events, Special Events and Risk Management, Principles and Best Practices in Event Management, Say It with Balloons, Event Management and Personality Enhancement, Thematic Event Planning and Systematic Event Management. 12. Mr. Dickie Soriano President BCD Pinpoint J. Richard “Dickie” Soriano is the founder and president of BCD Pinpoint Direct Marketing Inc, the largest and most-internationally awarded CRM agency in the Philippines. He also served as chairman of OgilvyOne Worldwide Manila, and was a member of the board of Ogilvy & Mather Philippines. During his stint as the managing director of OgilvyOne, Dickie started up the operations of OgilvyInteractive in the Philippines, one of the first in the country to do so. As an entrepreneur, Dickie started his direct marketing agency in 1988. By 1996, BCD Pinpoint had grown so big that Ogilvy & Mather, a global advertising agency, made an offer to buy into his company. He joined Ogilvy to manage their direct marketing division and the business grew by 700%. This led Ogilvy to name him Chairman. He returned to BCD Pinpoint full time in 2004. As a writer, Dickie has won several international awards, including the country’s first ever Cannes Lion, the country’s first ever Gold Echo given by the US Direct Marketing Association, and the country’s first ever Gold Caples award given in New York. His writing work for UNICEF continues to raise millions of pesos to help Filipino children, a cause he deeply believes in. 13. Ms. Kara Alikpala Founding President I Can Serve Kara Magsanoc-Alikpala is the founding president of the ICANSERVE Foundation, an organization dedicated to high impact information campaigns on breast cancer. She is a breast cancer survivor and cancer patient advocate. Kara is a broadcast journalist and documentarian. She is the managing director for AsianEye Productions and producer for ARD German Television and contributing producer to CNN (Cable News Network). 14. Mr. Von Hernandez Executive Director Greenpeace Southeast Asia Von Hernandez is the Executive Director of Greenpeace Southeast Asia where he directly oversees the renowned environmental group’s programs and operations in the Southeast Asian region. Before assuming the top position in Greenpeace Southeast Asia. He served as Campaigns Director for the organization supervising the group’s campaigns on Climate and Energy, Forests, Sustainable Agriculture and Toxics pollution in Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines. In 2003, Von was awarded the Goldman Environmental Prize for his work which led to the first ever national ban on waste incineration. In 2004, Asia Inc. magazine named Hernandez as one of Asia’s young movers and shakers and in 2007, he was named as one of Time Magazine’s Heroes for the Environment. He was also ranked by Reader’s Digest Philippines as one of the most trusted Filipinos in a trust poll conducted by the magazine for its March 2010 issue. Since Hernandez took over the reins of Greenpeace Southeast Asia, the organization's number of individual supporters grew from 23,276 in 2007 to 52,918 as of May 2010. To maintain its independence, Greenpeace does not accept donations from governments or corporations but relies on contributions from individual supporters and foundation grants. 15. Mr. Jonathan Madrid Country Manager Yahoo! As the Philippines’ Country Manager for Yahoo! Southeast Asia, Jack Madrid is responsible for the management and P&L of Yahoo!’s operations in the Philippines and reports back to the head of Yahoo! Asia Pacific. He has been able to establish the presence of Yahoo! in the Philippines as a leading portal and digital news provider as well as in its communication products such as e-mail, messenger and social media. He has also increased Yahoo!’s audience reach and engagement. Prior to joining Yahoo!, Jack was the Process Director of Dell Philippines, the Managing Director of MTV Philippines, Managing Director of Ayala Corporation and Vice President of Citibank (Hong Kong), where he began as an Account Manager for local & multinational corporate relationships. Jack earned his Bachelor of Science in Economics degree at The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USA. 16. Mr. Roy Platon Managing Director MyAyala.Com Mr. Roy Platon started his career with the Ayala Group in year 2000, as part of the Group’s holding company and venture capital investment firm for Internet and technology endeavors. He has since spent about 10 years in the industry, incubating many hi-tech businesses, including wireless applications and value-added services, IT project management and solutions, and digital media. He has spent a good portion of his career in B2C e-commerce and online shopping. Roy is now the Managing Director of www.myAyala.com, one of the most popular e-commerce websites in the Philippines. 17. Mr. Miguel Perez President Ayannah Mobile Mikko Perez is Chief Executive Officer of Ayannah. Mikko has over 20 years experience operating, investing in, and advising successful ventures. Prior to leading Ayannah, he was Director of Finance & Business Development at Chikka and helped steer Chikka to profitability. He also spearheaded Chikka’s expansion into China, Japan and the US. Mikko was an investment manager at Next Century Partners where he managed private equity on behalf of Soros Fund Management, LLC and several institutional investors. He was also an investment banker at Hambrecht & Quist, LLC in San Francisco where he advised technology, media and telecom ventures. Mikko has a BSc in Management (with Honors) and a BA in Development Studies (with Honors & Award for Excellence) from the Ateneo de Manila University and a MBA from the Harvard Business School. 18. Mr. Edwin Calanog Director of Operations Akubo CRM Edwin Calanog was one of the first customers of Akubo. He brings a wealth of experience in operations management to help with Akubo's growth and ensuring that customer satisfaction and product quality remains high. Edwin's past roles include leading Lakeside Technologies International as Senior Operations Manager for its software development operations in the Philippines. Previously, he worked with Microsoft Business Solutions in Pasig City, Philippines as Program Manager assigned to Project Accounting solutions. He also worked for TMA Resources, a Virginia-based company as Quality Assurance Analyst and Technical Writer for software solutions customized for associations, labor unions, and non-profit organizations. Edwin holds an M.B.A. from Fordham University and a B.A. in International Relations (Magna Cum Laude) from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. 19. Mr. Toti Ramos DM Consultant MLA Toti Ramos has been in the international direct mail and marketing industry for more than 11 years. He specializes on advising how companies can mail effectively, from list and database selections, printing, production and postal distribution. He services clients in Asia, Australia, North America and Europe. Prior to establishing Marketing Solutions Ltd., Toti was the General Manager for DM Projects of MLA, a leading international direct mail company in Asia. He worked with a number of fundraisers while with MLA, including Unicef, SOS Children’s Village and the Association of Mouth and Foot Painting Artists. 20. Mr. Andrian Lee General Manager – Philippines and Emerging Markets AsiaPay Payment Technology Corporation Andrian Lee, General Manager, Philippines & Emerging Markets, for AsiaPay, joined the AsiaPay management team in 2006. Since then, Andrian has overseen commercial service of Philippine payment service PesoPay in online credit cards with leading acquirer BDO and online ATM and mobile payment space with BancNet & GCash. He has spearheaded ecommerce activation of various key partnerships in the region. Since 2001, Andrian has been championing Philippine ecommerce, included starting up the New Media business for online gaming leader Level Up, as well as pioneering online ventures Trevoca and FiestaMundo. He spearheaded the eBiz is eAsy campaign to accelerate the adoption of everything "e". Andrian is an active speaker in ecommerce & Internet conferences and since 2009, coaches the eCommerista LaunchPad workshops. He is a B.A. Communications graduate of the Ateneo de Manila University. 21. Mr. Anthony Emmanuel de Dios Assistant Vice President BDO Unibank Anthony Emmanuel de Dios is the Assistant Vice President of the Investment Research & Strategy Department, Asset Management Division, Trust Investments Group of BDO Unibank. As Vice President of the division, he monitors and prepares regular analyses, forecasts and special studies on macroeconomic indicators, financial market (equities, bonds, forex) trends and developments. In particular, he analyzes and presents readings and forecasts on bond yields and corresponding yield curve movements and portfolio strategies. Mr. de Dios graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and received his Masters in Business Administration in 1997 from the University of the Philippines. 22. Ms. Maria Magdalena Vasquez-Surtida AVP for Marketing Head, Credit Cards UnionBank Mags Vazquez-Surtida is currently the Assistant vice president and marketing head UnionBank credit cards. She heads the product management team and customer lifecycle management. She is currently one of the mentors of the Bank's Management Trainees. Mags graduated from De La Salle University with majors in Communication arts and Marketing Management. She took up her masters in Business Administration in Ateneo Graduate School of Business and graduated with gold honors. She has also completed the UnionBank Executive Leadership Program at the Asian Institute of Management. 23. Ms. Evangeline Mayuga Executive Director Children’s Hour Philippines, Inc. Gee Mayuga has been the Executive Director of Children’s Hour since 2002. As Executive Director, she oversees resource deployment and spearheads fundraising efforts, rallying individuals and companies to give their one-hour share in nation-building and investing for a more sustainable world. Since its inception in 1999, Children’s Hour has raised more than Php 180 M, funded more than 250 projects with 263 partner organizations that benefited 419, 125 marginalized Filipino children, thus proving that one can make the world a better place, through the power of one hour. In 1999, Gee started as a volunteer for Center for Excellence in Public School Education (CENTEX), a division of Ayala Foundation Inc. Prior to joining Children’s Hour, she was an Ayala Executive from 1986 until her retirement in 2001. She began her career with the Ayala Group as Personnel Director of Hotel Intercontinental. Her last assignment with Ayala was as General Manager of FCS Insurance Agency & Consultants, Inc., a subsidiary of Ayala Life Insurance Inc. and FGU Insurance. Gee is also an experienced corporate accounts and human resources practitioner, having served in those capabilities in different companies such as Philippine National Oil Company and Smith Bell & Co. Inc. among others. 24. Ms. Annabelle Plantilla Director for Organizational Sustainability Group Haribon Foundation Ms. Anabelle Plantilla is Director for Organizational Sustainability of the Haribon Foundation for the Conservation of Natural Resources. She was its former Executive Director from 2001-2008. Ms. Plantilla’s previous professional involvement has been with government as a Director in the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and as Division Chief of the Ecology Center of the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority and with the private sector as a senior environmental specialist for Woodward-Clyde, a consulting firm. Ms. Plantilla has a bachelors degree in Environmental Planning from Maryknoll College and a masters degree in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of the Philippines. She is a licensed environmental planner and has a weekly column at The Manila Times. She is currently a trustee of Project Seahorse Foundation for Marine Conservation based in Cebu and of the International Visitors Program-Philippines Alumni Foundation. 25. Mr. Mario Derequito Director – Center for Social Development Ayala Foundation Mario A. Deriquito is Senior Director of the Ayala Foundation, Inc. He is responsible for overseeing the major education and leadership foundation’s development programs and for setting up and managing the newly created Resource Development Department. He also oversees the Philippine operations of Ayala Foundation USA, a US-based foundation that works with Filipino-Americans who want to give back to their home country. He sits on the Board and is Treasurer and chairman of the CapacityBuilding Committee of the Association of Foundations, a network of 140 non-government organizations operating in the Philippines. He has been on the board of the Philippine Council for NGO Certification (PCNC) since 2007 and has been its Treasurer the past two years. He also serves as Chair of the Education Committee of the League of Corporate Foundations (LCF), a network of 75 corporate foundations, where he was also Executive Director from 1999 to 2000 and trustee and treasurer from 1994 – 1999. He was also Executive Director of Mondragon Foundation, Inc. from 1991-1999. 26. Mr. Hector Guballa Asst. Vice President Office of the University Development and Alumni Relations Ateneo de Manila University Hector Guballa is the Assistant Vice President of the Office of the University Development and Alumni Relations (OUDAR) of the Ateneo de Manila University. He is primarily responsible for the major fundraising efforts of the University in the areas of scholarship, professional chairs and infrastructure projects. He also handles donor and alumni relations. Hector has vast experience in marketing and sales. Among the posts he held were Chief Marketing Officer of the Tan Hiep Phat (THP) Group in Vietnam, Vice President & General Manager at the San Miguel Corporation (Cosmos Bottling Corporation and PhilBev Partners, Inc.), Business Manager (Water & Juices, La Tondena Distillers, Inc.), Marketing & Sales Director of the Metro Bottled Water Corporation, and Assistant Vice President for Marketing & Sales at the Ayala Land, Inc. 27. Hon. Lorenzo Tañada Representative 4th District – Quezon Hon. Lorenzo R. Tañada III is currently serving his last term as Representative after being unopposed in the May 2010 elections. He is currently the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and Spokesperson of the Liberal Party. He is the author of several laws which include the laws on Renewable Energy, AntiDeath Penalty, Anti-Torture and International Humanitarian Law among others. A law graduate of the Manuel L. Quezon University, Erin was a staunch activist during his student days, and continues to be a defender of human rights following in the footsteps of his grandfather, the great nationalist Lorenzo Tañada, and his father, former senator and Congressman Wigberto Tañada. He is a member of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines and the Free Legal Assistance Group. 28. Hon. Florencio Bernabe Mayor Parañaque City HOSTED BY: Bam A. Aquino is a Board Member of Venture for Fund Raising. He co-founded and is currently the President of Microventures, Inc., a social business enterprise that services microfinancing organizations and their clients, as well as runs the Hapinoy Program. Bam is also the Founding Board Member of Rags2Riches, Inc., another social business enterprise. Previous to this, he was Chairman of the National Youth Commission (NYC), the main youth policy-making arm of the Philippine government. He also hosted Breakfast and Yspeak, two youth-oriented TV shows, and is currently the president of TAYO (Ten Accomplished Youth Organizations) Awards Foundation, an award-giving body for youth groups. Ria R. Tanjuatco-Trillo is a newscaster and host for Studio 23, a subsidiary of one of the Philippines' largest television networks. She appears nightly on the KBP Golden Dove Award-winning program News Central and will be soon anchoring Shop Talk, a program that aims to promote local SMEs from all different industries. A seasoned TV host and writer, Ria's career in media includes stints with the country's various basketball leagues and sports programs. She also currently writes for the Philippine Star’s motoring section. Ria is a Board Member of Venture for Fund Raising.
