role of music, lyrics and
live performance industries
The Shoko Music Festival in Zimbabwe is
dedicated to the efforts to promote “social
change and democracy”. The Berlin-based
Springstoff music label claims: “We are
saving the world!” In many African countries,
song texts with messages commenting on
social cohesion and politics have a long

Digital technology has simplified the production
and distribution of music. Yet in many African
countries, only a minority has access to
the internet and digital media. How is increasing
digitilisation changing the African music market?
Which roles do digital and social networks play
in reaching local and global audiences? These
issues will be discussed by Yoel Kenan from the
Africori digital music platform (South Africa),
Benjamin Lebrave from the Akwaaba Music label
(Ghana), Georg Milz from Outhere Records
(Germany) and the music journalist Fiona Okumu
from AfriPOP!

borders. Yet do both sides profit from EuropeanAfrican music cooperations? Are international
projects able to reach and address new audiences
and listeners? And how can German-African music
projects contribute to cultural understanding?
Guy One and Max Weissenfeldt (Ghana/Germany)
together with Tlale Makhene (South Africa) will
speak about their cooperative efforts in music. The
Partnership with Africa Foundation will report on
successful German-African music partnerships.
