So, in this last month of what has been a very tumultuous year, I am glad that
KCET can offer respite from the cares of the world and provide our viewers
with some programs that will spark that wonderful emotion we know as joy.
Whether it is losing yourself to the strains of Tchaikovsky in San Francisco
Ballet’s production of The Nutcracker, dancing to the tunes of great hit songs
from Love Train: The Sound of Philadelphia, Part 1, taking in the live broadcast
of the Los Angeles County Holiday Celebration at the Music Center or a host of
other memorable performance programs, December is a time for joy.

Dear KCET Member,
In my life, I have discovered that the one consistent thing in this world is change. These last 12
months have been no exception—not only have
we witnessed a historic presidential election full of
twists and turns, we have also experienced great
disruptions in the local, national and global economy. Through it all, KCET has remained constant—
a smart, insightful and responsible source for the
best news and entertainment on television. We have done it with an understanding that, in a media environment too often defined by dumbed-down
escapist programming, KCET viewers deserve an oasis of enlightenment.

Green to the People
Turning the spotlight away from glitzy
green design and looking instead at the
intersection of sustainable architecture
and affordable housing.
KCET exists because our steadfast supporters provide us with nearly 90
percent of our operating budget. It is difficult to measure the full impact that
things such as inspiration, quality journalism, the arts and culture and historical perspective have on our society. But during this past year, we have all witnessed events that remind us just how important these things are. If you consider just how many members of our society KCET is able to touch, you realize
that KCET is a great philanthropic value. So, as we embrace change and look
to the future, I ask that you make a special consideration for KCET to help us
continue to provide our vital community service and make an additional yearend gift. With your generous contribution, we can engage our viewers in the
changes that we all face and help create a brighter future for us all.
Sending warm wishes to you and your family for a healthy, happy new year,

I think for most of us, December is a month filled with
traditions—actually, it starts with Thanksgiving and
goes all the way through New Year’s. And as far as our
programming is concerned, over the years, we’ve established the tradition of re-airing many of your favorites during this month—and this year is no exception.
We start on a musical note with “Tuba Christmas” on
December 2, which leads into one of your all-time favorites featuring the eggnog and chocolate milk in glass bottles from Broguiere’s Dairy on December
3. As if that’s not enough calories, we once again visit a true California institution—“See’s Candy” on December 18. Then we go to the tape vault and pull out
an adventure that took place more than 15 years ago as we head up to Grass
Valley for our annual “Cornish Christmas” classic.
Sunday, December 21, is our one-hour California’s Gold special featuring
“Nacimientos,” and the next day, we visit the Ecke Farm in Encinitas to view
their spectacular “Poinsettias.” One of our most poignant episodes airs December 23, as we—once again—are inspired by the story of the “Holiday Star,”
which literally rose from the ashes. On December 25, we once again visit the
secret location (somewhere in California) and witness the beauty and wonder
of millions of ladybugs in their natural surroundings. On December 26, we marvel at the tradition of the “Firefall” in Yosemite, and Sunday night, December
28, we find the exact “Center of California” and climb to the top of the “Golden
Gate Bridge”—two of your favorites! We end up with a bowl of “Menudo” on
December 29, and some hand-pounded “Mochi” on December 30.
Traditions are important—they give us all a sense of
place. And even though we’re all constantly looking
ahead with the anticipation of what tomorrow will
bring, it’s also nice to look back and savor the past.
Happy Holidays!

What if, despite the process of aging, we could do something to dramatically
improve our abilities to sense and process information? What if our brain
ultimately holds the key to independence? Brain Fitness 2: Sight & Sound,
a follow up to the popular Brain Fitness Program, explores these possibilities.
Peter Coyote takes us to the frontline of research in neuroscience, psychology, and neurobiology,
where discoveries about the amazing power of the brain to change—regardless of age—are taking
