Letter to Viewers
The BBC and KCET have a rich history of collaborating on projects including
programs such as Auschwitz and the Making of the Nazi State, How Art Made
the World, The Great War and The Shaping of the 20th Century. Now with BBC
World News, KCET can share BBC’s quality journalism with millions of PBS
viewers throughout the United States. We’ve worked with BBC to revamp the
newscast, which will come from London, with a new format, a new set, and a
new anchor, Mike Embley. The daily 30-minute newscast will draw upon 70
worldwide news bureaus and 2,000 journalists who make up the BBC global
news team.
And for the very first time, BBC World News content will be accessible
through the KCET website. The digital offerings include video and audio news
summaries which will be updated hourly, as well as feeds of the latest news
headlines.
With the current financial crisis, providing a comprehensive global news service to PBS viewers is more critical than ever, particularly since so many of our
domestic news organizations are cutting back their international bureau staff.
The BBC-KCET alliance offers a road map through our uncertain times,
exploring the nuance and complexity of the world around us.
n o v e m b e r
As one of the few public television stations producing national programs for PBS, KCET’s top priority
has always been to ensure that viewers receive the
most timely and accurate news and information
available. So I take great pride in announcing that
beginning November 1, KCET will be the exclusive
U.S. distributor for BBC World News to public television stations throughout the nation.
airs weekdays at 4:30 AM and 5 PM
Mike Embley, a veteran
BBC news presenter,
reporter and producer,
anchors the show from
London.
Philippa Thomas, an
experienced foreign
correspondent, will
contribute daily from
BBC’s Washington, D.C.
bureau.
This team will provide insight into
the U.S. global position as well as
how world events are impacting
America.
Annual statement as required
by the U.S. Post Office
It is this dedication to comprehensive, insightful and balanced coverage that
makes KCET and PBS such an invaluable resource for our society. KCET can
only do it with the continued generosity of concerned citizens like you.
On behalf of KCET, I thank you.

huell’s note
We’ve all heard the fish story about the big one
that got away. Well recently, I had the opportunity
to do a story about a big fish that didn’t get away!
Bill Ernst, who lives in Malibu and is an avid
spearfisherman, contacted us to let us know he’d
recently speared a record setting 93.4-lb white sea
bass. Now that’s a big fish. So we went out to Leo
Carrillo Beach to spend the morning with Bill and
hear his fish story. He was filled with energy and
excitement as he told in detail the story about how it all happened. He even had
an exact mounted replica of the fish with him so we could see it up close and
personal. His excitement about sharing his fish story and the obvious pride he
feels as a Malibu local who now holds a world record fish title got me thinking
about the stories we’ve recorded over the years. And you know what? The most
memorable ones—the ones we’ve all enjoyed the most—have been the simple
ones. Real stories about real people and the events which take place in their
lives. Good TV doesn’t have to be brain surgery! Bill Ernst is now
a friend. And believe me, his story about the big fish that
didn’t get away will be a classic California’s Gold we’ll all
Huell Howser
enjoy for years to come.
airs weeknights,

Tavis Talks ...
Political candidates often talk of bipartisanship during a campaign season, but
as we have seen for years, the reality in Washington usually does not match the
rhetoric.
If there is to be real change following this year’s presidential race, let it be that
we realize a new political reality in Washington that puts the American public
first and partisan politics second.
The cynics will say this idea is too unrealistic, but in these difficult times, bipartisanship can no longer be viewed as a luxury we strive for, but the political
reality we demand.
So as we all catch our breath following the longest presidential campaign in
U.S. history, I hope we all continue to focus on real change and encourage our
political leaders to work together in tackling the biggest challenges of our time.
Thanks for your continued support of KCET
and as always, keep the faith.

Never before had such widespread attention been devoted to a scientific instrument with such

Before we went to the Moon, George Ellery Hale took us to the stars. For twenty years, from
1928 to 1948, the building of the 200-inch telescope on Palomar Mountain captured the
imaginations of America. Los Angeles filmmakers Todd and Robin Mason tell this compelling
story of America’s first journey into space as they trace Hale’s 20 years of struggles personally
and professionally to build the million-pound telescope on Palomar Mountain—considered
the “moon shot” of the 1930s and ‘40s.
