Indy Ski Club returns to its roots, a place of many good times
and where many a romance began. (And a few bit the dust there, too)
Signup for trips before they ALL sell out (bring your checkbook).
Bring a guest!
Join Indianapolis Ski Club at the 2009
Penrod Arts Fair (Indiana’s Nicest Day)
at the Indianapolis Museum of Art on West 38th street and MLK
Saturday September 12, 9 - 5
Tickets are $15 at the gate or $12 in advance at Participating MARSH
Supermarkets, The National Bank of Indianapolis Locations, Hubbard & Cravens, Borders, and of course the Art Museum.
Join Indy Ski Club at booth D-12, not far from the beer stand (we HOPE). Bring your non-skiing friends to see what the club is all
about. And what do snow skiing and art have in common ? Ski Towns ! And ski towns are crammed with art and photo galleries!
(Just ask any of us who got a bit tipsy on a gallery’s champagne and ended up buying a 500 pound carved bear. Try checking THAT
at the airline desk!)
Sorry. Other than carved bears, no pets are allowed.
Contact Jennifer Rhamy or Jim Robinson for more info (info on last page of the Boomer)

Trips Update
The trips sign-up at our picnic was a great success. It was a hot, sunny summer day, so the Indianapolis Sailing club was again a great venue. Our thanks to Joan Naffziger.
Three of our trips attracted over 100 people by themselves. Our two lowest-cost trips had waiting lists,
but our most expensive domestic trip was only 2 short of being sold out. Steamboat has been expanded from 30 to 42 and still has a waiting list of 8. Whitefish has been expanded from 28 to 34 and
now has only one space remaining. Taos now has a waiting list of 2 and we are trying to include
those two. I don’t expect to expand these trips any further because air has become very expensive.
Our other trips; Vail, Salt Lake, Keystone, Cortina Italy and Beaver Creek still have plenty of space:
and people have been signing up since the picnic. So don’t delay !
If you want to ski with the club this year, I urge you to make up your minds soon. Space can fill quickly
and we do have to make lodging and air cancellations pretty early this year to avoid expensive penalties to the club.
Don’t forget that three of our remaining trips, Vail, Salt Lake, and Keystone offer certified ski club instructors on the trip, and this instruction is free to you. Ask anyone, skiing with our instructors is worth
the time.
Your next chance to learn about trips and sign up in person is downtown at the Rathskeller on September 10. We hope to see you there.

comparison, only 25 percent of skiers and
snowboarders wore helmets in the 2002/03

Halloween Pub Crawl Revived - Indy Ski Club tradition returns
It's Halloween and the Ski Freaks will be out on the town for a 2009 Indy SKI CLUB PUB CRAWL in
seven Broad Ripple Bars for a ghoulish and perhaps droolish good time! Our first bar location will be
The Broad Ripple Brewpub, 842 E. 65th Street) at 2:00 pm. Our last bar location will be (The Red
Room, 6335 Guilford Ave.) at 8:00 pm. We will spend 50 minutes at each bar with a 10 minute walking
or crawling buffer in between. The exact bar route is being drafted and will be handed out when we
begin. Dress in costume or be doomed! Please RSVP to Heather Morr at [email protected] if
you plan to attend or have questions or suggestions.
Some suggested rules to follow:
1.) Don't drink and drive. Have a designated driver, plan to take a taxi, or book a couch close by to sleep it off.
2.) Pay with cash to keep it quick.
3.) Pace your drinking unless you can handle it. (Who can?)
4.) Eat to absorb. Lots of the bars serve good food. If you do order food, order something quick to prepare.
5.) The start and end bars are near each other. Park accordingly.

Help find The Cure
Club member Cathy Drook, along with three generations of women from her family and
hundreds of others, is doing a 60 K walk to end breast cancer on September 26 and 27.
Their team has already amassed pledges for over $26,000. Cathy welcomes donations
and team members and pit crew since her lazy husband won’t commit to a full weekend
away from golf and the couch. Proceeds go to St Vincent Foundation.
Why is this in the Boomer? Cathy is an active club member, a breast cancer survivor, and
her husband is the Boomer editor and can put anything in here that he wants. Besides, it’s
a worthy cause. And no family should ever have to go through the ordeal of cancer.
If you are reading this online, you can visit their Five Generations team site by clicking the URL below.

The PREZ speaks - by Jim Robinson
Great seeing everybody at the August picnic and in case you missed it, we had a wonderful time. A big
thanks to everyone who helped plan and organize the event. I believe we're off to a good start and really
appreciate everyone's fabulous support of our club! We’ve got some new stuff planned this year to improve things for our members, including enhanced social events, increased promotion of our club, continued lower dues for members, participation at the Penrod Art Fair with a booth to increase community exposure for our club (please stop by or volunteer) and holding our September and October club meetings at
the Rathskeller (an old favorite).
Labor Day for me marks the end of summer and reminds me that fall is just around the corner. I know we
have plenty of warm weather ahead of us, but skiing is not that far away so it’s time to begin making plans.
A great number of our members have already signed up for trips, and some of the trips are filled-up and
have been expanded. If you haven’t yet signed up for a trip, you’ll have another chance at our next club
meetings in September and October. Also, if you have not yet done so, you must renew your club membership this month - a bargain at $25 for individuals and $40 for a family. On your membership renewal, I’d
encourage everyone to indicate that they’ll receive the club’s newsletter in electronic format via the
internet instead of by snail mail. The club saves money that way, and members receive the same newsletter in color format. Guests are welcome at any of our meetings, and are encouraged to do so, for only a
$5 fee. Please be sure to invite friends and acquaintances to our meetings so we can bring in new members
every chance we get. Thinking skiing in the August heat.
