Department Review
With over 100,000 participants in the Towns Park system each
year, Collierville Parks Recreation and Cultural Arts
continue to be a leader in offering its citizens a wide variety of
leisure time activities and state of the art facilities.
The department provides over 750 acres of park land in regional,
community and neighborhood Parks! Included in those are 30
athletic fields, 10 tennis courts, 35 seat
community theatre 10 play structures, 2 spray parks, 2 nature areas, 9 fishing lakes, and over 18 miles of Greenbelt trails including
the W. C. Johnson boardwalk and primitive Wolf River Trail.
The department is responsible for maintaining all Town Property including: Parks, trails, open space, medians, right-of-ways, landscaped areas, and all public grounds.
During 2011 the department planted in excess of 10,000 seasonal flowers; mowed, trimmed and cleaned 9.7
miles of medians; maintained over 95,000 square feet of landscape beds, planted an additional 7000 spring
bulbs; and mowed weekly over 430 acres of turf.
During 2011 the department installed two new synthetic turf multi-purpose fields at W. C. Johnson Park
creating a year round playing surface for a variety of activities and reducing maintenance costs by over
$60,000.
The department opened a new section of the Wolf River primitive greenbelt trail and new trail head for access, rebuilt 8 miles of elevated boardwalk destroyed in the spring floods of 2010 and 2011, and provided
several rest and viewing areas.
The department was able to develop and get approved a new service provider agreement with the Collierville
Arts Council which will allow continued community theatre events run by this volunteer organization.
We had over 68,590 volunteer hours provided by our outstanding youth coaches, scheduled 1,565 youth
sports games and 5,286 practices.
The department hosted three seasons of USTA competitive tennis events, hosted eleven major special events,
and had 217,434 visits to the departments website.
2011 was truly a remarkable year for the department, and we expect 2012 to be just as exciting.

Mission Statement
It is the mission of the Collierville Parks, Recreation and Cultural
Arts Department to serve, educate, and enhance life for all of our
citizens; to plan and provide a wide variety of fun and affordable
recreational, athletic, educational, and cultural activities and opportunities, to acquire, develop, improve, beautify, and maintain a
variety of parks, trails, and recreational facilities that provide all
Collierville residents with leisure opportunities.
• 2011 Capital Investment Projects
Equipment – $70,000 – Purchased a new 16’ self contained rotary diesel mowing unit to replace older mowers.

Greenbelt Extensions – $230,000 – This project will include design,
engineering, and construction of approximately two (2) miles of new trail along the north side of Wolf River Boulevard from Wellington Farms to St. George School. Projected date of completion is summer of 2012.

Off-Leash Dog Area – $20,000 – Construction of fencing and gates to all
residents to run their dogs off-leash. Project is proposed along South Street east of the Town’s fuel center. Projected date of completion is
July/August 2012.
•
Middle School Renovation Project – $65,000 – The Town is scheduled to take over the old Collierville Middle School once it is relocated. Funds are
available to help renovate the gymnasium for recreational/Senior usage.
•
Morton Museum Renovations – $118,000 – Phase III calls for installation of sprinkler and alarm system, construction of upstairs offices and storage, and completion of the museum/theatre areas.
•
Park Entrance Improvements – $125,000 – Develop and improve entrances to Estanaula, Suggs, and Nikki McCray Parks including signage,
fencing, lighting, landscaping, and irrigation.

Athletics Highlights:
• 14 & under All Star Baseball Team won USSSA State Championship.
• Collierville placed seven recreational All Star Teams in the USSSA State
Tournament.
• Samantha Rehm, seven years old, was first girl to play in Collierville
Recreational Mighty Mites Tackle Football League.
• Started Complete Athlete Sportsmanship Program with 53 members in
the first year.
• Collierville fielded its first Girls Competitive Softball teams in four years
with the Lady Dragon 12s and Lady Dragon 10s.
• Collierville Athletics had 5,104 youth and adult sports
participants.

Recreation, Education &
Instructional Division
Division Highlights for 2011:
• Instructional Registration fees received for the calendar year total $146,752.30.
• Cox Park Tennis Courts had court usage of 45,888 hours from league play and coordinated instructional programs.
• Yearly registered program participants for tennis: 1,912
• Collierville High School tennis court usage of 612 hours for practice and 288 hours for home matches during the spring season each year.
• Collierville Tennis Program generated revenue of approximately $50,330.00 with a program net of $16,299.00 after program expenses.
• USTA Competitive Tennis was host to a total of 768 court participants with 32 home teams over 3 seasons of play at Cox Park.
• Collierville area Senior Adults traveled to St. Augustine/Amelia Island in Florida, Chicago, New York City for Christmas and the Memphis Zoo with a total of approximately 6,600 miles traveled this year.
• Senior Exercise class had an average of 4,200 participants and a total gym usage of 156 hours.
• Pitner Driving School hosted a total of 90 hours of classroom instruction and 700 hours of one-on-one behind the wheel driving instruction for 116 students.
• Tennis Coach Tony Cherone developed a USTA Jr. Team Tennis program for middle-school age participants that involved instruction and competition in area matches with an average of 50 participants.
• The Town’s tennis pro Coach Tony Cherone was named USTA Jr. Team Tennis Coach of the Year 2011.
• Cox Park Tennis Courts 3 and 4 were resurfaced in October 2011.
• New Outdoor Educational Programs for youth were offered in the spring.
• Camp Smile, camp for special needs children, was held in July for one week with 10 participants.
• Senior Adult Walking Club formed to promote walking and getting outdoors was started in October 2011.
• Parks and Recreation and Tennis Staff hosted the Annual Tennis Block Event in May with 100 youth and adults participating in this free event to promote the game of tennis. Quote: 70% of all tennis players in the U.S. learned to play the game of tennis at public tennis court facilities.
• Department Program Newsletters, a total of 30,000, were distributed through the Collierville School System.
• Recreation Program Coordinator attended the Mid-South Naturalist Program hosted at Pinecrest in LaGrange, TN with a total of 72 hours of classroom instruction and information.

Cultural Arts Division
Interesting Facts:
• The Harrell Theatre was in use 315 nights
and weekends in 2011 with rehearsals,
meetings , productions, and classes.
• The Harrell Theatre is run with the
smallest staff (3) of any theatre in Shelby County.
• No tax dollars are used in funding productions at the Harrell Theatre
• This September marks the 25th season of
shows at the Harrell Theatre.
• The Harrell Theatre staff has a combined
total of 56 years experience in theatre
management.
Division Highlights
• Expanded entertainment offerings for
Christmas Tree Lighting including choirs from Collierville, Crosswinds and Tara Oaks Elementary Schools.
• Created a service provider agreement with
the Collierville Arts Council regarding
programming at the Harrell Theatre.
• Miss Collierville won the Miss Tennessee
crown and is competing in Miss America
giving Collierville national exposure.
• Established a partnership with New Day
Theatre and The Hatiloo Theatre to expand
offerings for children and minorities and
created a new musical concert series offering
a wider range of musical genres (Country,
Bluegrass and Jazz).
• Hosted various public service meetings for
the community- Severe Weather, Emergency
Shelter training, Citizens Police Academy
Graduation, and Environmental Commission
Waste Water Management.

Historic Town Square merchants reported record
sells on December 10, 2011 during Christmas In
Collierville.
Parks website received over 217,434 visits in
2011, over 18,000 per month.
Special Events/Tourism Division is
responsible for the promotions of the Town
of Collierville. The advertisement to the
right was placed in the Tennessee Vacation
guide. From the Tennessee Vacation Guide
the department receives in excess of 1,700
leads per year. Each of these leads receives,
via mail, the Town of Collierville visitors
guide.
