1 2 th Tuesday 29 July 2014 1. PRINCIPAL Education Week: Moree Public is celebrating the 60th Education Week with the 1954 theme: Lighting the way to a better world. This morning, we celebrate with an inter-denominational Service of Worship followed by a parent / staff morning tea and visits to the classrooms. Due to our very busy school schedule, some year 3, 4 and 6 students were out of their classrooms sitting the ICAS English paper and unfortunately may have missed their class visitors. However, parents are most welcome to pop in later this week to view their child’s work – with our apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused. The SRC members also welcomed Mr David Tait and Mr David Gulliver from Tait’s Toyota who have kindly donated a beautiful tree in celebration of National Tree Day. This was planted near the kinder rooms and will be nurtured in coming months by the 2014 kindergarten classes. New Strategic Plan: Moree Public school is in the process of setting its strategic directions for the next three years. We are seeking parental input relating to this plan. Thank you to the many parents who returned the survey last week. If you are yet to do so, there is still time. Please send the completed survey (attached to a previous newsletter) with your child or drop it in to the school office. In addition, parents are invited to attend one of two workshops to allow them to have input into the school plan. The workshops will take about two hours and will be held in the school library at the following times. • Thursday 7 August 2014 at 11:30 am • Monday 11 August 2014 at 6:00 pm If you would like to attend please call the school and confirm with office staff your preferred session. Please note the workshops are the same. Heferen Shield: A sunny day greeted athletes from Moree zone schools as they competed for the Heferen Shield yesterday. Congratulations go to the MPS team – bringing home the shield. Mr van Velthuizen informs me that there were some outstanding performances from our students with many selected to represent us at the regional carnival. Congratulations to all of the Moree Public School children who displayed a very high level of enthusiasm and Important Information … athletic talent. The way our students cheered on their team-mates was terrific to witness and highlighted the great sense of team spirit. My thanks go to Mr van Velthuizen, Miss Withers, Mrs Black, Miss Carlin and Mrs Nelson for their tireless work on the day. Our special thanks go to all of our parent helpers who carried out jobs on the day and to those who helped with the canteen. This wonderful day for children from around the district could not be hosted without this generous help. Year 4 Bathurst Excursion: Best wishes to the students in Year 4 who will be travelling to Bathurst for their three day excursion. Perhaps you may strike it rich at the old gold fields! I also recommend that everyone packs some very warm clothes. Thank you in advance to the accompanying parents, Mr Jennings and Mrs Macey and to teachers, Mr Burgess, Mrs Twartz, Mrs Coombes and Mr French for generously accepting this special responsibility, work many additional hours to ensure the children of MPS can enjoy a fantastic experience, develop their independence and learn more about the Gold Rush period and life in the early days of settlement in the central west. Visiting Show: Book Week is not too far away but MPS got an early start with our visiting shows last week featuring two of the short listed books for the 2014 awards through the Childrens Book Council. Students in Kindergarten to Year 4 enjoyed the show based on the book, The Windy Farm. Students in Years 5 and 6 enjoyed the performance of My Life as an Alphabet. Students found the shows both entertaining and informative. These are just one part of an excellent program of Book Week activities co-ordinated by librarian, Mrs Beattie. In a fortnight, renowned children’s authors Ms Gaye Chapman and Mr John Heffernan will conduct writing workshops for all classes at MPS. These workshops will enhance the class teaching programs and certainly encourage the joy of literacy and writing, most specifically. Jump Rope for Heart: This event seems to grow more popular every year with an increasing number of students adding to the already high participation level in this event. The students certainly display some excellent skills and excellent levels of physical fitness. Once again, there were many entries in the lunch time Jump Off and Miss Willoughby has provided a full report on the event. Taking MPS website: www.moree-p.schools.nsw.edu.au/ • Tuesday 29 July - Education Week Services of Worship; 11.00am parent / staff morning tea; 11.20am tree planting; and 11.30 – 12.30pm visit to classrooms st • Thursday, 1 August Moree District Schools Awards Ceremony commencing 11.00am 4 3 what I thought may have been a less strenuous option, I was delighted to be able to join in with the infants students as they had fun with a range of skipping activities. Congratulations to all the students who participated and gave their support to the Heart Foundation through the Jump Rope for Heart program. This program has a two-fold purpose: promoting fitness and healthy lifestyle and raising much needed funds for research to help the fight against heart disease and stroke. Thank you to the parents and community members who have donated money through the sponsorship of students. Sponsor money and completed forms cant be returned to the school office. OC Placement test: A large group of MPS students recently elected to sit the placement test for possible placement in the Opportunity class in 2015. Whilst the test is administered through the High performing Students Unit (Sydney), Mrs Hosegood reports that the students presented at the test centre with focus and eager to try their best. Well done to everyone who have taken the opportunity to pursue academic excellence. Kindergarten enrolments 2015: Parents and community members are reminded that Moree Public School is currently accepting kindergarten enrolments for 2015. If you have a child who turns five years of age before 31 July 2015 please complete an enrolment form and return it to the front office. It is important to complete these forms early as this information is vital for planning and preparation for the 2015 class structure and staffing. Further information relating to the Head Start into Kinder program and family orientation morning will be published later in the term. Assemblies: Last Friday the audience at the infants assembly was treated to a delightful rendition of the Three Little Pigs Rap. Our host class, 1M-4 did a fabulous job leading the assembly. At the primary assembly, 4H-22 danced and presented a positive message about coming to school with a smile because it is a happy place to be. Thank you to both classes and to Miss McPherson and Mrs Hunter. This week the kindergarten assembly will be hosted by KL-9 in the hall adjacent to the office at 10:30 am and the primary assembly will be at 11:20 am in the new hall with 6E-16 as our hosts. • HEFEREN SHIELD CARNIVAL: Yesterday, a marvellous group of people came together to provide a canteen serving tasty morning tea and lunch. On behalf of the P&C I would like to extend out thanks to Tammy Elbourne, Jaymie McDonald, Heidi Brooks, Brett Brazel, Marg Shelton, Anne Newton, Jill Stewart, Wendy Dennison, Alex Barker and Mark Kite for their huge contribution to the day. Once again, to Vicki Rae and her team for all of their consistent hard work with running our canteen at the carnival and at school – we appreciate the job you have all done. Amy Quinlan (President) 3. JUMP ROPE FOR HEART On Friday 25th July 2014 Moree Public School held its annual Jump Rope for Heart day. All grades participated in activities such as individual, partner and long rope skipping, relays, and parachute. It was a fun day for all. In the week leading up to the day, primary students participated in a jump off. This consisted of Year 3/4 partner skipping and Year 5/6 individual skipping on Wednesday, and Year 5/6 partner skipping and Year 3/4 individual skipping on Thursday. The winners were: Year 3/4 partner skipping - Millie Hobday and Leila Murray (1 min 48 secs); Year 5/6 partner skipping - Abby Newton and Ameyla Brooks (5 mins 36 secs); Year 3/4 Individual skipping - Piper Phillis (5 mins 49 secs); Year 5/6 Individual skipping - Abby Newton (23 mins 4 secs) Abby Newton holds the record for longest individual skip. Everyone who participated in this wonderful cause are to be congratulated. Students raising money for the Jump Rope for Heart will need to have their forms in no later than Friday 15th August 2014 (Week 5). Sponsorship forms will be collected from the library steps for the rest of this week and given to class teachers from next Monday, 4th August. Sara Willoughy 4. Parking: Parents are advised that parking conditions at the front gate have been changed to a NO STOPPING zone between 8:00 am and 9:30 am in the morning and 2:30 pm and 4:00pm in the afternoon. Unfortunately, despite the signage, numerous cars continue to stop there and I continue to be concerned about the safety of our students, your children. Please do not stop or park in the NO STOPPING zone when dropping off or picking up your child during these peak times. Your co-operation with this matter will be greatly appreciated and will contribute to a safer area at our front gate. Mr Adrian King 2.
