Where is Laikipia
Laikipia lies on the threshold of Kenya’s wild northern rangelands. It is an enormous area
of 9,500km² forming part of the wider 56,000km² Ewaso ecosystem, stretching from the
slopes of Mount Kenya in the south east, to the edge of the Great Rift Valley in the west.

Laikipia is larger than all of Kenya’s national parks and reserves except Tsavo. Cutting
across the vast open plains are the tributaries of the Ewaso Nyiro River – one of Kenya’s
largest river systems. Lying in the rain shadow of Mount Kenya and despite its elevation
(1200 – 2285 meters above sea level), Laikipia is dry and cool.

is how people from different cultures and backgrounds have come together to support
and undertake conservation through their own organisation, the Laikipia Wildlife Forum
(LWF). Conservation in its broadest sense is carried out to support the management and
sustainable use of natural resources as well as their protection and restoration. In this
way conservation supports the livelihoods of the people and wildlife.
Laikipia’s Tourism
Laikipia is one of Africa’s most exciting wilderness safari and wildlife tourism destinations.
With its abundant wildlife and spectacular scenery, visitors can experience a classic
safari, largely free of the constraints that apply in national parks and reserves. Night
game drives, guided nature walks, riding and cycling are just a few of the exhilarating
activities on offer. High levels of community involvement allow visitors privileged access
to the cultures and customs of the Mukogodo Maasai, Samburu, Pokot and other
peoples. A wide choice of stylish and unique accommodation is available.
How to get to Laikipia
Laikipia is accessible by road and by air. Driving
from Nairobi takes approximately 3 hours on a good
tarmac road via Thika, Karatina, Sagana and Kiganjo.
This road continues on to Meru and Isiolo. Laikipia
can also be accessed on a tarmac road from Nakuru
and the Rift Valley via Nyahururu (Thomson’s Falls),
and from Lake Baringo on a murram road.
Daily air services are provided by Air Kenya, Safari

charters can also be arranged. Nanyuki is a bustling
town, with shops, restaurants and accommodation
facilities.

Ol Pejeta Conservancy
A world-class tourism destination, the
90,000 acre Ol Pejeta Conservancy is East
Africa’s largest black rhino sanctuary, the
closest reserve to Nairobi with the ‘Big 5’
and holds some of the highest predator
densities in Kenya. The Sweetwaters
Chimpanzee Sanctuary is home to 42
chimpanzees.

Lewa Wildlife Conservancy
Spanning 62,000 acres, Lewa is Kenya’s
leading model for wildlife conservation on

Solio Game Reserve
Established in 1970, Solio’s 17,000 acre
Game Reserve is home to over 200 black
and white rhino, and is internationally
recognised as the most successful private
Rhino Sanctuary in Kenya. Nestled
between the Aberdare range and Mount

Ngare Ndare Forest
The 5,300 ha indigenous forest is a safe

Yaaku Cultural Museum
Located adjacent to the Mukogodo forest
within Kurikuri Group Ranch, this small
facility has been set up to help promote the
Mukogodo culture and revive the Yaaku
language. It highlights the cultural journey
that the Mukogodo people of this region have
taken over the last century.

the 1970’s, there are fewer

which two-thirds occur in
Laikipia and the Ewaso
ecosystem.

Kaptuya Community Conservancy
20,000 acres of wilderness located 16kms
off the Suguta Mugie - Lake Baringo road in
western Laikipia, overlooking the spectacular
Mukutan Gorge and the Rift Valley. The area

species - has been set aside for conservation
by the Pokot community.

Laikipia Wildlife Forum
The Laikipia Wildlife Forum (LWF) is a broad-based conservation organisation
dedicated to preserving and managing wildlife populations and wilderness habitats
in Kenya’s Laikipia region. The Forum is committed to bettering the lives of people in
the area through supporting and generating livelihoods, while securing dependable,
sustained access to essential natural resources.
Formed in 1992, the Forum is membership led, representing and bringing together
a cross section of land owners and land users, including local community groups,
private ranchers, pastoralists, small-scale farmers and tourism ventures. They
are united in the pursuit of a common goal: To conserve Laikipia’s wildlife and
ecosystem integrity and improve the lives of its people by bringing its societies
together to conserve and sustainably use the natural resources on which they
depend.
