The literary phenomenon about global womanhood, life and death
“When I started reading the novel and I experienced the intensity of Lindstedt’s writing, the suspenseful
atmosphere she creates from the very beginning, I understood I was facing a “chef-d’oeuvre”. Her capacity
to combine a fascinating story while building a reflection on the meaning of life and death is astonishing.”

“We are thrilled to secure a second Finlandia prize-winner. This is a novel
to love, from Lindstedt’s richly drawn characters and exquisite prose to her
clever range of narrative devices and complex plotting, throughout which
she threads her subtle power games and metaphysical questions. A brilliant
second novel from a rising star, it will be a very welcome addition to our
growing list of literary translations.”

S A A R A T U R U N E N ’ S N O V E L is partially set in the world of theater, and
gives a voice to a whole generation of people who feel without a home, for one
reason or another. One’s childhood home, a safe environment in itself, feels suffo
cating. And so she escapes and tries to find her place in the world, but the only
thing she finds is her own shadow, the feeling of worthlessness, and the inability
to love herself.
Love/Monster is the story of a woman who tends to change places hoping that
happiness would hide behind the next corner. She has to go a long way before
realizing that escaping won’t bring satisfaction.
“When I started writing Love/Monster, I was most interested in tackling Finnishness and
my conflicted relationship with it, perhaps best described as loathing. What do you do if
you hate your country? I wrote on a piece of paper. What if you hate yourself, too?
I also wanted to write about mother-ness; like home, mother signifies concepts that reach
beneath the surface. In my novel, mother refers not only to the protagonist’s mother, to a
psychological explanation for the world to which everything always returns. As both concept and character, mother is instead the homeland’s heart and soul, the force that creates
the ambiance inside the home…” - SAARA TURUNEN

-MARKKU JOKISIPILÄ, SUOMEN KUVALEHTI, THE BOOKS OF THE YEAR
“Karo Hämäläinen creates an image of the top athlete as a tough tactician, but also as an extremely strict ascetic.”
-THE SAVONIA PRIZE JURY
“The novel Alone is skillfully built around the myth of Paavo Nurmi. Hämäläinen’s laconic rhythm works excellently and is very
Nurmi-like. The novel conveys the author’s deep understanding of its core themes: long-distance running, business, and one’s solitude.”

of a top athlete, who had a burning will to succeed and
a manic hatred of losing. He raced against his inner demons to meet the high standards he had set for himself, and
achieved everything in life — except for one thing. Alone is
a story of loneliness and unrequited love.
Karo Hämäläinen’s award-winning novel is loosely based
on the life story of the greatest distance runner of all times,
“the Flying Finn” Paavo Nurmi, who ran his way to the
top of the world in the 1920s. It reads as a literary novel set
against the backdrop of the rapidly industrializing Finland
of the 20th century, echoing “Running” by Jean Echenoz.
