FROM THE DESK OF

- President & CEO
REGAINING FAITH IN OUR ECONOMY
You may have heard the
phrase “show me the
money!” It’s natural for us to
doubt what we cannot see,
especially in business. The
collapse of the economy in
2008 and 2009 revealed the
loss of faith in our banking
and regulatory system.
Reputations were harmed or
ruined and the stock market
came to a halt. The ensuing
collapse taught us that
consumer faith is essential in
conducting business.
The loss of faith in the financial system is rooted in a loss of
goodwill. The average person has come to see many businesses
as doing what is good for the business and not good for the
customers. Goodwill is a helpful way to express faith in business
and account for the financial value that a business is providing to
society.
The word goodwill first penetrated the language of business in
the sixteenth century, acquiring a second meaning in commercial
circles: It signified the patronage or repeat customers that a
particular merchant had acquired, and the consequent profit that
a buyer of the business could anticipate above the value of the
businesses physical assets.
Within the accounting industry, the term “goodwill” is used to
round out a company’s balance sheet. Its role is to quantify how
good the reputation of a business is beyond its book value – the
value assigned to its inventory, equipment, buildings, cash, furniture
and other assets. Whereas the book value describes the tangible
assets, goodwill describes the intangible. It is much more
subjective and varies in proportion to factors like customer growth,
brand loyalty and trust people feel toward the organization.
We are regaining faith in business as evidenced from the data
that was shared recently about the State of Ohio. Ohio has
worked diligently to create a more jobs–friendly climate, promoting
“in-state goodwill” and the results are getting noticed by
our local community leaders and by our nation’s business chief
executives on where to create jobs.
Chief Executive Magazine recently named Ohio the “most improved”
state in the U.S. for doing business in its ninth annual survey
of CEOs. Up 13 places from last year, Ohio is now ranked the
22nd best state to do business with in the nation. Some of the
quotes about Ohio from Chief Executive Magazine include “Ohio
is constantly trying to help grow businesses and are listening to
the leaders of companies to help solve problems” and “Ohio is
doing some amazing things to attract and support a pro-business
climate.” Combine that with a May 2013 report that U.S.
consumer confidence jumped to a 5 year high of 76.2, we’re slowly
regaining faith in our economy.
…consumer faith
is essential in
conducting business.”
Understanding the role that goodwill plays in business and that it
is both tangible and intangible is essential. The new norm in how
we conduct business is here to stay and we are recognizing that
all healthy economic activity needs be tangible and, thus mutually
beneficial – ROI…a return on investment. If in doubt, do what
is right for your customers as a lot of the time this is not initially
apparent, thus intangible. These dimensions of goodwill lead to
profits and long-term relationships that sustain the business even
during tough times.
It’s a good sign that we’re regaining faith in our economy as
evidenced by the positive results of getting back to business
basics. “Show me the goodwill!” is the charge today from our
customers.
Thank you for being a valued member of the West Chester
Liberty Chamber Alliance. Together we grow your business!

plan to send 75 veterans to DC
The year 2013 marks 75 years in business for
public accounting firm Clark Schaefer Hackett
(CSH). To celebrate the anniversary, the firm’s
workforce is raising funds for Honor Flight,
a not-for-profit organization that transports
veterans to visit and reflect at their Washington,
D.C. memorials. The goal is to send 75 veterans,
one for every year that the firm has been in
business.
To date, the CSH workforce has raised
the funds to send 46 veterans. Support has been a combination of
personal contributions and staff-driven fundraisers. The total also includes
contributions from various clients who have become interested in the effort.
“Our staff is excited, and we feel a true sense of purpose,” said Robin Dennis,
leader of the Honor Flight initiative for CSH’s Miami Valley Office. “This project
has been a great way to give back to a community that has supported us for
75 years.”
Clark Schaefer Hackett’s 75-year history rests on the contributions of
veterans, including those who currently work throughout its ranks. For more

Butler County United Way
Announces Campaign Cabinet Chair
Tim Abbott, Director-Government & Community
Relations for Duke Energy, is leading the
charge of the Butler County United Way annual
campaign as the 2013-2014 Campaign Cabinet
Chair.
“I volunteer to help Butler County United Way
because I believe in their mission to Give,
Advocate, Volunteer and Live United. Over 20
years ago, I volunteered to help the Hamilton, Fairfield and vicinity campaign
as a cabinet member calling on manufacturing businesses and have been
involved ever since. It was a great learning opportunity to witness the
generosity of our business community, but a very humbling experience to see
the need for assistance in our neighborhoods,” said Tim Abbott.
The Campaign Cabinet is a group of community business leaders who
are committed to the mission of Butler County United Way. Their primary
responsibility is to drive United Way’s annual fundraising campaign in local
businesses and agencies. Dollars raised fund the programs and initiatives
that help our youth become successful adults and adults become selfsufficient.
Butler County United Way will publicly kickoff the 2013-2014 Annual
Campaign on August 30th, from 7:30am-9am at the New Hamilton
Amphitheater in Hamilton. Learn more about how you can GIVE, ADVOCATE,
and VOLUNTEER by visiting www.bc-unitedway.org.

We are still accepting applications for the Leadership 21 Class of 2014!
Leadership 21 is a Chamber Alliance program designed to improve the
quantity, quality and effectiveness of leaders along the I-75 Growth
Corridor and within the communities of West Chester and Liberty
Townships. Area leaders will participate in a variety of programs that will
enhance their knowledge of the community and give them that extra
leadership training which provides that edge you need today in business.
The Class of 2014 will begin in September of 2013 and run thru May 2014 with graduation in September 2014. The 9 monthly, full-day sessions (one day
a month) allow participants to explore education, history, government, criminal justice, communications and economic development, to name a few. PLUS, the
class will visit the county jail, local police department, schools, food pantries, hospitals and other businesses which will offer a clear picture of the community
in which participants live and do business.
Need more information, please call Kenni Blaché at 513.777.3600 or visit www.TheChamberAlliance.com and click on the Leadership 21 button!
SPOTLIGHT on Emery
Federal Credit Union
The West Chester Liberty Chamber Alliance fosters companies from
early beginnings to fresh new 21st century ideas. If you are into historical
Cincinnati businesses and their stories of success, then this is an example of
one such company.
In 1840, The Emery Candle Co. was founded
in Cincinnati and the plant is still located
along I-75 by the P&G soap factory. This
family-owned chemical company wanted to be
able to provide their employees with a better
way to bank and in 1939 the credit union
was chartered. In the years following, the Emery Federal Credit Union has
undergone a lot of operational changes and is now thriving as a credit union,
available to the entire Cincinnati area. Some of the original members of the
credit union are still customers and as Shelly O’Neill, VP Branch Operations
explains, “It’s neat when a customer comes in and their account is #10!”
Now in 2013, you can enter any of the local Emery branches in Liberty
Township, Sycamore Township, and Western Hills for full service financing
and regular banking. If easy access to your account is a concern, Emery
Federal Credit Union participates in the Shared Branching Network which is
accessible in over 5,000 other locations and over 27,000 ATMs nationwide.
The close-to-home values are what have given Emery new growth in the
past few years as the management team has many Cincinnati ties. Emery
believes being involved in committees and staying connected through outside
networking is a key to success. They also believe in the community and help
to make it a better place to live. They have community outreach projects
and donate time and money to the Emery Community Foundation which
benefits Shriners, Alzheimer’s and Honor Flight Tri-State (flying WWII vets to
Washington D.C.). Emery also encourages its employees to give back, so they
provide community service hours for employees to use.
Emery Federal Credit Union is a sustaining sponsor of the West Chester
Liberty Chamber Alliance, have 2 graduates of the 2007 Leadership 21
Class, and Shelly O’Neill was the recipient of the 2009 Jerry Bryan Chamber
Member of the Year Award. Being
active in the Chamber and building
lasting relationships is important to
their success!
Moving forward, Emery has big
plans. They launched their mobile app this year with bill pay (remote deposit
capture coming soon) and also opened a call center, specifically to focus on
increasing the level of their customer service.
At the next Chamber event, please introduce yourself to any of the Emery
reps attending: Shelly O’Neill, Chrissy Shumake or Britt Scearce. Meanwhile,
you can catch Britt on FOX 19 on the first Wednesday of the month, or on
occasion on 55 KRC. Emery Credit Union invites you to, “Start your member
story today!”

NEW TOWNSHIP DEPARTMENT FOCUSES ON
KEEPING RESIDENTS AND BUSINESSES CONNECTED
The delivery of information
to residents and

June Luncheon Recap
Personality is the first word that comes to mind after an entertaining,
yet informative presentation by Ernie DiMalanta, Nanette Polito
and David Clegg of The Referral Institute at the West Chester
Liberty Chamber Alliance June Luncheon. The Referral Institute is an
organization that provides the training and tools to help business
professionals gain financial success through relationship-based referral
marketing.
“Do unto others as they would have you do unto them, or simply stated
treat other people the way that THEY want to be treated.” This is their
‘Platinum Rule’, an enhanced version of the Golden Rule. Because
many people have different wants and needs, Ernie, Nanette and David
informed attendees how important it is to learn how to adapt to the
personality type of the person we are conversing with; a crucial tool,
especially in a business setting.
At the beginning of the presentation, the three personality experts had
the Chamber audience fill out a behavioral inventory worksheet that
was broken into four categories. Each category had an extensive list of
descriptive words, and the audience was to circle each word that best
described them. Then they were to tally the number of circled words in
each category. The category with the highest number of circled words
identified their personality type.
SPEAKERS - from the Referral Institute - From left, Ernie Dimalanta and
Nanette Polito with facilitator David Clegg
The four personality types are: Go Getters, Promoters, Nurturers, and
Examiners. Go Getters are extremely competitive by nature, determined,
confident, goal oriented, and quick to make decisions. Promoters
are very energetic, typically the life of the party, fun loving, creative,
optimistic, always positive, and are almost always the loudest people in
the room because they love to be the center of attention. Nurturers are
typically a bit more reserved, almost always under control, accurate,
practical, analytical, and are a lot of times looked at as perfectionists.
Examiners are very calm and even keeled, patient, good listeners,
adaptive, routine oriented, indecisive at times, and like to get straight to
the point because they place a high value on time.
After going into great detail about the four personality types, Ernie,
Nanette and David explained how you can identify, in a matter of
seconds, which personality type someone has based on their attire,
tone of voice and body language. By figuring out what someone’s
personality type is, it becomes much easier to adapt your approach to
fit into their comfort zone, which increases your chances of building a
relationship. Once a relationship is established, the chances of doing
business with that person skyrockets.
EMCEE - Drew Dinkelacker, MarketingAccelerator.com
The reaction to Ernie, Nanette and David’s presentation was very
positive based on the smiles of attendees! Their message was
welcomed and embraced, and everyone seemed a bit more relaxed
during the networking portion of the Luncheon, proving that this
Luncheon was a great success!

Update on Lakota Local Schools
Just as with many businesses, managing the school district’s
debt and debt capacity is an integral part of our overall financial
management.
The school district does carry debt, though it’s not part of our
operating budget. The operating budget is balanced. Yearly
expenses do not exceed revenues.
The debt that we carry is related to
the bonds we issue. Those bonds are
primarily for school building construction,
with a small component of the debt
related to capital equipment for the buildings. As you would expect,
we are rated by the bond rating agencies, and we recently learned
the disappointing news that Moody’s has lowered our rating from
Aaa to Aa1.
The two main reasons mentioned in the ratings report released
by Moody’s were our recent lower cash balance and the lack of
community support.
We were very active in the bond market to finance school
construction during the enrollment boom over the last 20 years. But
with enrollment now trending down slightly, we don’t expect to need
to build any schools anytime soon.
One financial effect, though, of the lowered rating is possible higher
costs on any future bond refinancings, which we
do on occasion when prevailing and projected
interest rates make it advisable. A ratings
downgrade means less opportunity to save
costs for taxpayers.
Despite the disappointing news, we will continue to do everything
we can to manage the school district’s finances in a responsible
and prudent manner.
DR. KAREN MANTIA, SUPERINTENDENT
Lakota Local Schools
513.644.1166
[email protected]
We work to keep 60 days of operating cash on hand. However,
the average for school districts with a Aaa rating is 170 days. The
community support is measured by the recent history of success or
failure of tax issues at the ballot box.
Part of what made the news disappointing was that only a handful
– fewer than a dozen – of Ohio’s 600-plus school districts have the
Aaa rating with Moody’s. It is an elite club.

Social Strategies to Grow Your Business
July 30 – 9:00 - 10:00am
It can be overwhelming to keep figuring out new channels. There
are plenty of stories of huge investments in “new technology” with
little return. But we know this: there are plenty of companies who
are taking advantage of these new channels and their businesses
are growing because of it.
The question is, what do YOU need to know about your customers
and their buying behaviors to effectively grow your business? What
channels do YOU need to be in? How do YOU build marketing
funnels that will keep the leads coming in…and keep your existing
customers loyal?
Presented by Chamber Member, Joanne Westwood who helps local
businesses reach customers in their community using websites,
online marketing and social media marketing strategies.
