Show Your Support for Coal!
nce again, the Greater
Bluefield Chamber of
Commerce at the Coal Show
has teamed up with the National
Mining Association so that
exhibitors and attendees at the
Bluefield Coal Show can easily send
letters to Congress on key mining
issues. The two vital issues this year
are “Support Affordable Electricity”
and “Support Coal Jobs”.
In previous years, the project was
called A Voice for Coal and incorporated the National Mining
Association’s Advocacy Campaign
Team for Mining (ACT). This year, the
project is renamed Count on COAL.
Count on COAL is a campaign to
make America aware of the benefits
of affordable, reliable, coal-generated electricity. From homes to
businesses to schools, hospitals,
and local governments, we all benefit from affordable electricity with
stable prices and reliable delivery.
Count on COAL is a grassroots
organization that seeks to identify,

These are being staffed by operators who will each wear a distinctive
Count on COAL imprinted vest, and
each terminal will be clearly marked
with signs. The letters are easily
sent in standard form by a couple of
clicks. Determined by zip code, the
automated message recipients are
the attendee’s U.S. Senators and
U.S. House Representative. The
messages are also sent to the email address of the attendees.
When the messages are sent, the
attendee may also send additional
messages on behalf of voting age
family members, as well as other
friends. Attendees who send messages will receive a Count on COAL
“I’ve Been Heard” sticker.
It is important that everyone take
part in the Count on COAL campaign to help shape a positive
future for coal mining in America.
The U.S. coal mining industry is
under attack and it is vital that
employees, customers, manufacturers, suppliers, shareholders,
family members, and other stakeholders are heard, and become a
practical part of the solution.

Subject: Support Affordable Electricity and American Jobs
Dear Senator (recipent name):
Dear Senator (recipent name):
I urge you to support coal jobs and affordable coal-generated electricity.
I urge you to support affordable coal-generated electricity and coal jobs
The federal government’s energy policy is unwise and illogical. To jeopardize thousands of
good paying jobs and cause uncertainty for local communities dependent on the coal
economy, is un-American and should be stopped before it’s too late.
Affordable coal-generated electricity is the backbone of our economy. It's the
energy resource that keeps everything from our town’s local stores to the
nation’s biggest factories up-and-running; while providing jobs for thousands of
Americans.
With many energy sectors unstable and gas prices always on the rise, Americans
simply can't afford to have the cost of their household electricity driven up by
any additional misguided regulations on American coal - we need to protect our
domestic supply of coal.
With your support we can ensure that thousands of jobs and the availability of
coal for affordable electricity are protected.
One of the traditional features of the Bluefield
Coal Show is the excellent Technical Session
which takes place in the afternoon of the Opening
Day on Wednesday, September 11, 2013. The
Technical Session will be held at the Main
Building, Front Classroom, Brushfork Armory.
Please save these jobs and let these highly skilled coal miners continue to work and contribute to the economy.
Please remember that with wind and solar power, when the wind doesn’t blow and when
the sun doesn’t shine, there is no power. Coal is needed to make it all work. With many
energy sectors unstable and gas prices always on the rise, Americans simply cannot
afford to have the cost of their household electricity driven up by any additional misguided regulations on American coal. We need to protect our secure domestic supply of coal
and these vital American jobs.
With your support, we can ensure that thousands of jobs and the availability of coal for
affordable electricity are protected.

WELCOME
To The Bluefield Coal Show 2013
This year's show will again feature
mining machinery and related services
from the industry's best OEMs and
suppliers, and presentations during the
afternoons on Wednesday and Thursday by
top industry representatives. They are Coal
People who work in the coal industry and
know the up-to-date innovations presently
used in mining coal.
Charles and Dafney Peters
It is with great pride that we raise the
curtain on the 20th Bluefield Coal Show
2013 and hope you find your stay as
productive and informative as has been
the case every other year since the show's
inception in 1976. Every show grows
stronger and better as evidenced by the
increasing number of coal people who
come to the show from throughout the
U.S.
As is always the case, the economy and
the coal industry are changing and this
year is no exception. In recent months the
coal industry has come under considerable
scrutiny
but the
industry
remains
robust and
has faced
ups and
downs
over the
years.
In addition to strategically located manufacturing
facilities, our affiliate companies include engineering
services, resin and rolled-steel manufacturing, custom
steel fabrication, chemical roof support and sealing
products, and even our own trucking company.
Although the Bluefield Coal Show
has been considered one of the best coal
exhibitions of its kind in the nation,
we always look for ways to make
improvements.
To all exhibitors, veterans and
newcomers, suppliers and participants, we
extend a special welcome and we wish
you the very best during the show.
Charles Peters-General Chairman

The President's Tax on Energy
While the administration would like you
to believe that coal is an energy source we
can do without, the fact is that coal is the
largest source of America’s electricity—at
low cost.
The president’s misguided regulations
on greenhouse gases would prevent the
construction of new high efficiency coalfueled power plants that take advantage
of best-in-class technology at a time when
America needs low-cost electricity to
affordably and reliably power the nation,
boost job-growth and rebuild the
economy.
HAL QUINN
President & CEO
National Mining Association
It’s a simple fact: The president’s climate
action plan is an energy tax on consumers.
The administration won’t call it a tax,
but it’s a mandate that is going to drive up
your utility bill by eliminating affordable
coal from our energy mix and further
disrupt the balance of the American energy
supply.
Thanks again for your continuing support
of our most abundant and affordable energy
resource—American coal.

Low-cost energy is vital to our
daily lives. The recent article, “Your
iPhone Uses More Energy than a
Refrigerator” in The Week examines
how our modern communications
ecosystem and data cloud requires
more and more energy to keep
us connected. That ever-growing
energy need is something that coalgenerated electricity can provide
while keeping costs low – unless
it’s taxed and regulated out of the
equation.
COMMENTS ON THE COAL
SHOW...
Congratulations to the Greater Bluefield
Chamber of Commerce for another great
Bluefield Coal Show. The National Mining
Association (NMA) was particularly
grateful for your continuing support of A
Voice for Coal in partnership with NMA’s
Advocacy Campaign Team (ACT) for
mining, http://actioncenter.nma.org. Your
voices have joined with thousands of
others who are concerned about public
policies that are hurting consumers across
America’s heartland and the “coal people”
who come to your great coal show.
If you believe in affordable energy and a
common-sense approach to powering our
nation, tell your lawmakers. Urge them
to oppose the president’s new backdoor
energy tax and the EPA’s greenhouse gas
rules that hurt American households and
businesses.

The Bluefield Coal Show vividly combines
the pride and professionalism of the world’s
best coal miners, coal mine managers
and the industry’s great supporting
infrastructure with state-of-the-art mining
equipment and the latest, unbelievable
technology to convince everyone that coal
will be the world’s Fuel of Choice for years
to come. When one-half of America’s
coal exports come from West Virginia,
Bluefield, in the heart of the world’s most
valuable coalfield, is the perfect place to
show your support for coal!

Appalachian Power is proud to be a predominantly
coal-fired utility. Our heavy reliance on coal carries
some risk, so we’ve increased our fuel diversity.
But, Appalachian Power’s large, retrofitted coal
plants remain economical.
In fact, all our large coal-fired plants have been
upgraded with necessary environmental controls
to meet current and anticipated environmental
regulations. This investment allows us to remain
70% coal-fired into the future.

PRESIDENT ANNOUNCES
CLIMATE POLICY
President Obama has announced his
Climate Policy laying out the Administration’s Climate Change Policy relying solely
on regulatory authority to put coal-based
power generation squarely in the bull’s eye.
The centerpiece is a program to reduce carbon emissions from both new and existing
plants developed in with “states, industry,
and other stakeholders.”
EPA has been asked to propose initial regulations for existing power plants by June
2014 and final rules the following summer, and it will finalize the proposed rule
for new plants by September of this year.
This dual track approach suggests internal
Administration doubts about the legality of
its initial proposal for a single technology
standard for new sources. Administration
officials declined to say whether they would
repropose separate standards for coalbased
technology.
The President called for $8 billion in loan
guarantees for financing advanced fossil
fuel technologies, including carbon capture
and storage (CCS), and an end to public
financing of coal plants abroad that do
President Obama
not include CCS, except in rare instances
where no viable alternatives exist for poor
countries. He also directed the Department
of the Interior to prioritize site approval for
renewable energy facilities.
“Coal power plants generate more electricity and create more jobs than any other
energy source,” said National Mining
Association President and CEO Hal Quinn,

reacting forcefully to the President’s speech
in a statement. “So policies that shut off
coal energy damage the nation’s job and
economic engine, while also raising costs to
American consumers.”
Similarly critical were reactions from Capitol Hill. “Three quarters of Americans are
living paycheck-to-paycheck, but the White
House wants a national energy tax,” said
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell
(RKY). “These policies punish American
businesses by putting them at a competitive
disadvantage with our global competitors,”
said Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WVa). “Those
competitors burn 7/8th of the world’s coal,
and they are not going to stop using coal
anytime soon.”
Also, registering opposition to the plan
are the United Mine Workers of America
(UMWA). It “contains many lofty goals, but
nothing that speaks to the hardship and suffering his plan would cause to the lives of
coal miners, their families, and others in the
communities where they live,” said UMWA
President Cecil Roberts.

World Energy Use to Rise by 56%, Driven by
Growth in the Developing WorlD
World Energy Use to Rise by 56 Percent,
Driven by Growth in the Developing World
over the next three decades, world energy
consumption is projected to increase by 56
percent, driven bygrowth in the developing
world, according to International Energy
Outlook 2013 (IEO2013), released by the
U.S. Energy Information Administration
(EIA).
POWER
DEMAND
"Rising prosperity in China and India is
a major factor in the outlook for global
energy demand. These two countries
combined account for half the world's
total increase in energy use through 2040,"
said EIA Administrator Adam Sieminski.
"This will have a profound effect on the
development of world energy markets,"
said Mr. Sieminski. Clean-fuel technology
is also playing an important role in the
outlook, with renewable energy and nuclear
power expected to grow faster than fossil
fuels over the forecast period.
IEO2013 presents updated projections for
world energy markets through 2040. The
IEO2013 Reference case projection does
not incorporate prospective legislation or
policies that might affect energy markets.
Some key findings: World energy
consumption increases from 524
quadrillion British thermal units (Btu) in
2010 to 820 quadrillion Btu in 2040. The
increase in world energy use is largely
in the developing world, where growth
is driven by strong, longterm economic
growth. Half of the total world increase in
energy consumption is attributed to China
and India.
IEO2013 projects increased world
consumption of energy from all fuel
sources through 2040. Fossil fuels are
expected to continue supplying much of
the energy used worldwide. Although
petroleum and other liquids remain
the largest source of energy, the liquid
fuels share of world marketed energy
consumption falls from 34 percent in
2010 to 28 percent in 2040. Renewable
energy and nuclear power are the world's
fastest-growing energy sources, each
increasing by 2.5 percent per year;
however, fossil fuels continue to supply
almost 80 percent of world energy use
through 2040.
Natural gas is the fastest growing fossil
fuel in the outlook. Global natural gas
consumption grows by 1.7 percent per year.
Increasing supplies of tight gas, shale gas,
and coalbed methane support growth in
projected worldwide gas use. Coal grows
faster than liquid fuels consumption until
after 2030, due to increases in China's
consumption of coal and tepid growth in
liquid fuels demand attributed to (1) slow
growth in Organization for Economic
Cooperation and Development (OECD)
member countries, and (2) high sustained
oil prices. Other IEO2013 highlights:
• The Brent crude oil spot price averaged
$112 per barrel in 2012, and EIA's July
2013 Short-Term Energy Outlook projects
averages of $105 per barrel in 2013 and
$100 per barrel in 2014. With prices
expected to increase in the long term,
however, the world oil price in real 2011
dollars reaches $106 per barrel in 2020 and
$163 per barrel in 2040.
• Almost 80 percent of
the projected increase
in renewable electricity
generation is fueled by
hydropower and wind
power. The contribution of
wind energy, in particular,
has grown rapidly over
the past decade and this
trend continues into the
future. Of the 5.4 trillion
kilowatthours of new
renewable generation added
over the projection period,
52 percent is attributed to
hydroelectric power and
28 percent to wind. Most of
the growth in hydroelectric
generation (82 percent) occurs
in the non-OECD countries, while
more than half of the growth in wind
generation (52 percent) occurs in the
OECD countries.
• Electricity generation from nuclear
power worldwide increases from 2.6
trillion kilowatthours in 2010 to 5.5
trillion kilowatthours in 2040, as concerns
about energy security and greenhouse gas
emissions support the development of
new nuclear generating capacity. Factors
underlying the IEO2013 nuclear power
projections are mixed. They include the
consequences of the March 2011 disaster
at Fukushima Daiichi, Japan; planned
retirements of nuclear capacity in OECD
Europe under current policies; and
continued strong growth of nuclear power
in non-OECD Asia.
• Given current policies and regulations
limiting fossil fuel use, worldwide energyrelated carbon dioxide emissions rise from
about 31 billion metric tons in 2010 to 36
billion metric tons in 2020 and then to 45
billion metric tons in 2040, a 46 percent
increase over the 30-year span.

MADE IN U.S.A.
Coal News to Celebrate Ten Years
In July 2014, Coal News will celebrate ten
years of being in existence.
It was in July 2004 that the Premier
Issue of Coal News was published with the
headline “New Voice for Coal Industry”.
A special 10th Anniversary Edition will be
produced in July 2014 celebrating ten years
and describing the major events during the
decade that appeared on the pages of Coal
News.
In the inaugural edition, Bill Reid, the new
Publisher and Managing Editor of Coal
News, said, “We are dedicating ourselves to
serve the entire coal industry and all those
associated with it.” Reid continued, “While
other publications are produced for the coal
industry, Coal News intends to provide
greater coverage of coal industry events,
and thus make a greater contribution to the
coal mining industry. In short, we intend to
become coal’s foremost publication.”
To become the voice of the coal mining,
Reid said that the first task of Coal News
must be to promote the safety and health
of all those in the industry. Coal companies
make safety number one, and Reid said that
so will Coal News.
COMMENTS ON THE COAL
SHOW (continued from page 10)
“It is always exciting to be with our
coal industry neighbors in Bluefield,
WV. Being among these dedicated
people forges new opportunities
and strengthens longtime customer
relationships.”
During the decade, Coal News has visited
meetings across the United States to report
as accurately as possible to its readers on
what is being said and achieved by those
movers and shakers in the industry. Since
Coal News started, it has been present at
well over 300 meetings and events. Some
3,840 pages of editorial have been produced, incorporating well over 4 million
words.
“Our mission at Coal News includes:
promoting greater safety and health;
presenting reports on coal conferences,
meetings, trade shows, and expositions;
and publishing interviews with leading
personalities and experts associated with
the industry,” said Reid. “We also review
industry, government, and research reports;
provide information on technologies and
equipment for coal mining, processing,
and distribution; as well as discussing coal
production trends and forecasts.”
In 2009, Coal News established the online
publication, CoalZoom.com, as a resource
for quick and insightful information about
the industry. Subscribers to Coal News
automatically receive a subscription to

CoalZoom.com. Articles and information
can be posted very quickly and an email
blast takes place twice weekly.
The Coal News team includes Heather

COMMENTS ON THE COAL
SHOW (continued from page 10)
The Bluefield Coal Show is the
premier Coal Show in the Eastern
United States and continues to
highlight the coal industry by
exhibiting the latest in equipment,
products, services and technology
for the mining industry. With
the challenges being faced by the
country’s most dependable energy
source, the coal industry must unite;
therefore, whether being an exhibitor
or attendee shows your support.
The
Executive
Committee of
the Bluefield
Coal Show
is working in
conjunction
with the
National
Mining
Association’s
“Count on Coal “project during the
three-day event. This project will
allow you as a representative of the
coal industry to automatically send
correspondence to your legislators
urging their support for Appalachian
coal mining jobs and affordable coalgenerated electricity. This is most
important for the coal industry’s future.
Again, we thank you for support the
Bluefield Coal Show and we look
forward to seeing you at the Show.

Walk-Thru Bolter Evolution
incorporated on
each drill boom
to raise the
operators, with the
drilling controls,
for easy reach of
the mine roof.
Most of J.H Fletcher & Co.’s (JHF)
safety and productivity innovations
for over 75 years have resulted from
“brain storming” meetings between
miners (JHF customers) and JHF sales
and engineering representatives. JHF
customers explain the mine conditions
that are potential safety hazards to help
in developing the bolter design. Between
customers and JHF representatives, very
often a new concept for the roof bolting
machine is developed to address the
safety and/ or productivity issues.
The original idea for the “walkthrough”
(WT) chassis for the roof bolter came
from the mine foreman at No. 37 Mine,
U.S. Steel Lynch District, Harlan
County, Kentucky. In 1983 the No. 37
Mine was in early development, and the
seam height averaged ten feet (3.05m).
The coal ribs were extremely hazardous.
JHF sales and engineering people
worked closely with Lynch District
Chief Engineers J.W Boyle and later
Bob Stansbury in developing the WT
design.
These WT machines were model
DDR high seam roof bolters having
the drilling booms arranged for “inside
the booms” operator control positions.
Elevating operator platforms were
34
The “inside the
boom” operator
control position
concept had
been developed
previously
in 1978 for
Bethlehem Energy, Ellsworth Division
in S.W. Pennsylvania. The inside the
booms control arrangement affords the
operators protection from rib hazards
by placing the boom structure between
the hazard and operator. The limitations
of these earlier machines were that the
operators were required to walk between
the roof bolters and rib to enter or leave
the booms control position. However,
the design was a significant safety
advancement for the day.
Hazardous ribs were and currently are
prevalent in many coal mines. Soon
after the U.S Steel No. 37 mine bolters
were installed, model DDO WT arm
feed roof bolters with inside the boom
controls were built for Westmoreland
Coal Co. in Virginia.
The first model HDDR WT roof bolter
was built for Monterey Coal No. 1
Mine in Illinois in the mid 1980’s. Soon
after, the sales of HDDR WT and other
models spread to the Western states and
Alabama, and Kentucky.
Beginning in the early 1990’s, rubber
tire and crawler driven HDDR WTs have
been sold in England, Australia, China,
Norway, Canada, Mexico and South
Africa. Today, the HDDR WT roof
bolter is widely used in South Africa
where the room and pillar system is the
prevalent mining system.
Since the early 2000’s, the industry
surge to develop metallurgical grade
coal seams throughout Appalachia has
been a key element in the improved
designs of the low seam DDR WT.
Seam heights below 50” created
opportunities for various improvements
in the layout of the DDR WT to
accommodate men crawling through the
chassis as well as material flow issues.
The WT chassis has had many
configurations, and many improvements
have been made over the years.
Significant improvements are listed
below in chronological order:
1. The walkway deck thickness
through the length of the chassis was
reduced from 9 inches to 4 inches. This
gives the operator 5 inches additional
head room.
2. A powered retracting entrance
ramp was incorporated at the rear of the
chassis.
3. An automated material handling
system for loading bolts, resin, and other
supplies (assembled outside the mine in
trays) onto the machine chassis.
4. Operator platform back guard
was designed to include a “butt rest”
which allows the operators to rest their
legs.
5. Lower seam DDR chassis was
improved, spreading the chassis out to
allow crawl through in low conditions.

developed on all WT models to allow
the operator to better position himself in
rib and truss bolt installation.
JHF’s main focus at this year’s 2013
Bluefield Coal Show will be on their
modernization program. JHF will
be presenting a RRII to WT-DDR
conversion, including up-to-date safety
features, added walkway, and rib access
booms, available for viewing in booths
1615 and 1616.
JHF updated safety features enhance
mine safety and productivity. In an
effort to make these features, such
as walkways and inside-the-boom
arrangements more easily available,
JHF has created a modernization
program. JHF makes use of customer’s
existing equipment, and modernizes
it to new standards, at a 20% lower
price than that of a new machine. With
a modernization, customers receive
the latest safety features available,
approvals and certifications validated,
Visitors will not only be provided
information regarding JHF’s
modernization program, but also
information about the entire product
line, along with the ability to interact
with JHF presentations, videos, and
animations. Sales and service staff will
be on hand to talk with customers.

Coal News to Celebrate Ten Years
(contined from page 23)
to be part of our 10th Anniversary Celebration,” said Turner. “My duties have
been extended to include the office functions including article editing, compiling
the On the Move column, managing the
mailing list, paying the bills, invoicing,
arranging travel plans for the team, and
just about everything to keep the office
running. At Coal News we do everything
with customer satisfaction always being
foremost in our minds.”
Over the years the volume of advertising has increased substantially and this is
due in no small measure to the efforts of
Melinda McClure, Advertising Director.
“I started with Coal News right from its
inception as Art Director, and although I
still have these duties, I took on the position of Ad Director in January 2012,” said
McClure. “We meet as many advertising
clients during the year as we possibly can,
and they are finding our advertising rates
reasonable and, with the large newspaper
format, attractive for both full-page and
partial-page advertisements. I also work
with our online newsletter, CoalZoom.
com, which is designed with a range of
budgets in mind.” McClure covers the
Eastern and Northeastern parts of the
country.
To increase the advertising effort
further, Shafali Pendleton joined the Coal
News team as Advertising Consultant in
February of this year. With seven years
of advertising sales experience already
under her belt Pendleton has quickly
adapted to the coal mining industry. “I am
delighted to be part of the team and cover
the Western United States and the Southeast, as well as international clients,” said
Pendleton. “Although there are challenges
in the coal industry right now, more and
more customers are seeing the advantages
of advertising with Coal News and are
joining our family of advertisers. And we
are thrilled to welcome them!”
Today, Coal News is published in
Bluefield, West Virginia in the heart of
the coalfields with a circulation of 17,121.
Several hundred bonus copies are also
distributed each month at major events.
Coal News is circulated to coal operators, managers, mining personnel, equipment manufacturers, mining consultants,
government employees in coal-related
positions, students and faculty of mining
colleges, mining associations and institutes, and to others providing products and
services to the coal mining industry.
Since the inaugural issue of Coal
News ten years ago, Coal News, described
as “Coal’s Foremost Publication”, has
become standard reading fair for all segments of the mining industry. “We set
out with a clear goal to make Coal News
Coal’s Foremost Publication, and I think
it’s fair to say that we have achieved that.
We spend more time traveling around the
industry than any other publication, and
and well-illustrated
our concise
articles are designed to be easily read by
busy people, who wish to keep up the latest advances in underground and surface
mining.” Reid continued, “We take our
responsibility to report on the significant
events of this great coal mining industry
very seriously, and plan to continue doing
this for many years.”

COAL INDUSTRY EXPERT and
advocate, Danny Smith, retires
job he held until his retirement July 1,
2013. Those responsibilities included
the Coal Business Group, real estate and
Pocahontas Land.
THE INDUSTRY
THROUGH THE YEARS
Working on the coal side of the
Norfolk Southern Corporation, Smith
said he has seen the ups and downs
of the industry over the years, and in
particular, “the booms and busts of the
metallurgical industries.”
Daniel "Danny" Smith
After over 37 years with Norfolk
Southern, Daniel "Danny" Smith elected
to retire this past July.
Over his three and a half decades with
the company, Smith held a number of
positions ranging from mine inspector to
president and general manager.
Smith’s career with Norfolk Southern
began in 1976 after graduating from
Virginia Tech. He had worked the
previous summer at U.S. Steel before
being interviewed and offered a position
with Pocahontas Land Corporation, a
subsidiary of Norfolk Southern, by Bob
Raines.
His first job with the company was
as mine inspector at Pocahontas Land.
By 1995, he had become president of
Pocahontas Land in the Bluefield Office
In 2001, Smith moved to Norfolk to
become President of NS Development
for Norfolk Southern which included
Pocahontas Land and the Industrial
Development Group.
In 2003, he was named Senior Vice
President of Energy and Properties, a
40
When he started his job as senior vice
president, he saw the utility market rise
to an all-time high in 2008, and then
decline through the present year. This
decline has been accelerated under the
current administration.
THOUGHTS ON THE
CURRENT STATE OF
COAL
Smith feels that the current
administration has waged “an all-out
attack” on coal via the Environmental
Protection Agency. He feels that this
administration is forcing out coal as an
energy source by using the EPA to force
coal plant closures.
In addition to threats from the
administration, coal is suffering from
lower natural gas prices due to its
overabundance.
“The energy strategy for the United
States should embrace natural gas but
also be allowed to utilize the abundance
of coal,” Smith said. “This will make
the U.S. energy independent.”
EXPERIENCE WITH
THE BLUEFIELD COAL
SHOW
Smith has been very involved with the
show since the show’s inception in the
1970s. He has served as guest speaker
and has introduced other speakers
for the show kick off. However, he
credits Charlie Peters as being “the
mastermind” behind bringing the show
back to its current success.
“The show has evolved to become
a great resource for the industry,”
Smith said. “The Bluefield Coal
Show has filled a gap very well for the
industry. It is always well attended and
professionally done.”
A STRONG ADVOCATE
OF THE INDUSTRY
Acknowledged as an expert in the
energy sector, Smith is a strong
proponent of coal as an energy source.
He feels great pride in the industry to
which he has devoted his careers, an
industry that fuels our nation.
Smith said his successor with Norfolk
Southern, David Lawson, is very
intelligent and will be a great resource
for coal industry as well as the Bluefield
Coal Show in the future.
Smith is a native of Bluefield. Smith’s
wife Lecia, a daughter of a coal miner,
is also from the area and has been active
in many projects involving the Bluefield
City Park including the Ridge Runner
Railroad and Yakity-Yak Playground.
Coal keeps the lights on. We keep the coal moving.
At Norfolk Southern, we’re investing in technology and resources to improve efficiency and add value for
our coal customers. With one of America’s largest hopper fleets, our hybrid cars have lower weights to
increase capacity, and we’re testing ECP braking systems to improve service. Plus, at Lamberts Point, our
dedicated coal transload facility in Norfolk, we can make custom blends. Whether you’re a shipper, receiver,
or partner, rest assured we’ll go the extra mile for you.

Ausco Products Mining Vehicle Wet Brakes
Direct to Mine Sales
enclosed wet brake that is a drop-in retrofit
on the wheel ends of the axles commonly
used on these vehicles, improving safety
and maintenance.
Safer Operation and Less
Cost to Maintain
Ausco
Products,
Inc. of
Benton Harbor,
Michigan is the world leader
in custom
designed and engineered brakes for offhighway equipment. Their largest customers
include John Deere, CAT, CNH, JCB, Toro
and Polaris. Ausco currently has over 30
fully enclosed wet brake designs being
used on mining vehicles such as: shuttle
cars, scoops, ram cars, roof bolters, scalers,
personnel carriers, locomotives, utility and
service vehicles. In over 30 years of mine
experience, Ausco has delivered safer braking
and cost savings over competitive designs
used on many underground mining vehicles.
(See us at booth 610 in the upper level of the
Armory).
Ausco is now selling its shuttle car and 2-man
ride wet brakes direct to the mines. These
brakes offer improved safety, reduced vehicle
maintenance and downtime, and substantial
cost savings. How often can you improve
safety while also reducing cost, maintenance,
and downtime?
Ausco 1218 Wet Brake
Upgrade Kits for 2-Man
Rides
Several years ago, Ausco identified the need
for improved braking on 2-man rides used
for underground coal. Research showed that
the brakes and axles on these machines have
a high maintenance, accident-prone history.
Ausco’s solution was to design a fully
48
The 2-man rides use light duty
axles. The brakes for these axles
are setup two ways. They either
use a single mechanical brake
for service and parking on the
rear axle input shaft, or they use a
mechanical brake on the input to
the pinion shaft for parking with
hydraulic calipers on the front axle
for service. Neither is an adequate
solution. When you brake on the input
shaft to the axle, braking torque can overload
and fail the pinion and/or axle shafts. This
disconnects both the drive motor and the
brake from the wheels – there is no way to
stop! There are reports of crashes, as well
as operators jumping from the machine or
steering into walls. The hydraulic caliper
solution on the front wheels also has
problems. The front wheels support only
25% of vehicle weight. Braking on the front
can result in skidding and loss of vehicle
control. All of the brakes used on these rides
are either band or caliper brakes, neither of
which is suited to underground use. They
wear and deteriorate quickly in the harsh
environment, resulting in high maintenance,
frequent downtime, and safety problems.
The Ausco solution is
much safer. Ausco’s
wet brakes are
mounted on the wheel
ends of the existing
axle. The mechanical
brake remains on the
axle input shaft for
parking and emergency
function, but since it is
only used for parking,
axle overloads do not
occur. The Ausco
brakes eliminate
any potential safety
issues associated with
braking on the pinion
shaft. The Ausco design is durable and low
maintenance. Whereas it is common to
service calipers in the mine every 1-2 weeks,
Ausco’s fully enclosed wet service brakes are
designed to operate with little to no service.
In the three years Ausco has sold these
brakes, they have yet to sell a service kit. It
is also notable that since the Ausco brakes
are fully enclosed, they do not require a fire
suppression system at the wheel ends and
eliminate any concern for sparking.
The Ausco brake not only protects the
operator, but it also reduces maintenance
cost. Water intrusion through the OEM axle
seals causes axle bearing failures, corroded
shaft splines, and damaged gear sets.
Ausco’s mine-proven grease barrier sealing
technology prevents these axle maintenance
headaches by keeping water and dirt out.
Ausco’s brake also features a live stub shaft
with its own internal bearing set, replacing
the OEM axle bearings with a much more
robust design. This reduces load on the
axle shaft, reducing maintenance costs and
downtime on axles, bearings, seals, and gear
sets.
How much is the maintenance cost reduced
on these machines? In case studies
performed with actual mine customers,
payback on the Ausco brake system was less
than 4 months. When we add the cost of
fines, downtime, and then the overwhelming
improvement in safety, the Ausco system
becomes a true bargain.

Ausco Shuttle Car Brakes
– Less Cost, Less Weight,
Better Sealing
Ausco Products designed the first OEM fully enclosed
shuttle car wet brakes in the early 1980s. Ausco was
an innovator then, and they still are today. The new
Ausco 96569 shuttle car brake with an extreme duty,
high pressure seal offers many advantages over the
competition. With direct to mine pricing, our new
brake is often less expensive than the cost of rebuilding
competitive brakes. Why use costly rebuilt brakes, when
you can replace your used brakes with new brakes for
less?

Bluefield coal Show

Drive Systems
New Seal for Longer Gearbox Life
Working with leading coal companies, Ausco recently
learned that a common source of gearbox failure on
shuttle cars is actually leakage from the brake seal.
High pressure in the brake cooling line causes hydraulic
oil to contaminate the gearbox lubricant causing gear
failures. Ausco surveyed the market for a better seal and
was unsatisfied. So, Ausco designed its own extreme
duty, high pressure seal. The new shuttle car brake is
capable of 180 psi continuous cooling line pressure with
spikes up to 500 psi. This high pressure seal protects the
gearbox from being overfilled with brake cooling oil
and reduces expensive gearbox repairs and downtime.
Ausco’s reduced weight brake housing design offers
20% less brake weight than competitive brakes,
which makes it easier and safer to handle and install
underground. The brake’s graphitic brake lining material
and through shaft cooling provides long brake life for
less maintenance. And all at a price that is much less
than competitive designs.
Please see our ads in this directory or visit our web site
(www.auscoproducts.com) for additional information
on these brakes, their payback analysis, and the cost
savings they offer.

2015 Bluefield coal show
SEPTEMBER 16, 17, 18 - 2015
The Bluefield Coal Show is a professional show put together primarily by volunteers. The show continues to grow and
today is considered one of the major regional shows in the U.S. The 2013 show features approximately 240 exhibitors
displaying firsthand what the future holds in the way of equipment and any new innovative technology being developed in
the coal industry. Your company should be represented in the 2015 Bluefield Coal Show.
I am interested in receiving exhibiting information for the September 16, 17, 18, 2015 Bluefield Coal Show.
