Board of Governors by Dr. Ryan M. Walton, Board President As I write this, the snow is melting and green grass is showing itself once again. And by the time you read it, the golf course should be open and ready for play. I understand some much needed cosmetic changes have been completed on the golf course. This should be a great season ahead! I assume by now that if you qualify, you have received a letter from the Board and from Glenmoor management about freezing the quarterly dues for 20+ year members. I have received a few calls and messages thanking me for implementing this policy, but I need to give credit where it is truly due. This idea was brought forth by Glenmoor immediate Past-President John Sypek in 2014, and Myron and Mrs. Wolstein approved this concept very quickly this year. A big round of applause to everyone involved for the implementation of such a great idea. When Gretchen forwarded me the list of those Members who qualify, I was stunned to see how many Members have been at Glenmoor for over 20 years – 91! Congratulations to this group on your longevity, and thank you for your commitment and leadership over the years. You helped plant the seeds that have grown into a great community of people. Dr. Ryan Walton Board of Governors Steven M. Gyalai President Tennis Committee Tim Cranor Co - Membership Committee Michael Gruber Junior Committee Legal Committee Manager’s Message Dr. Jabr Hadid Emil C. Hasenstab Greens Committee Ron Myers Co - Membership Committee John Pinson Spa Committee Susan Shearer House Committee Cindy Webster Social Committee John Schnepf Golf Committee by Myron Vernis, General Manager I don’t have to remind anyone about how long our winter has been but a true sign of spring has arrived: the golf course is open! This is a very special time of year to watch the grass, trees and flowers awaken from their slumber. The greenery and blossoms truly make the course an oasis for all Members to enjoy. We had a record number of new golf Members last year and it was a great reminder of what a wonderful institution the game is. Of course, it’s cool to watch the tour pros on TV, but that’s not the best part of golf. First and foremost, it’s one of the few genuine lifetime family sports. The time it allows for you to commune with your fellow players is priceless in today’s hustle and bustle. Being a Member of the Club also means that it need not take a huge chunk of your precious time. The course is always here for you to use at your convenience, even if you just want to grab three holes to relieve the stress of the day. Of course, the men’s and ladies’ Golf Committee have put together wonderful schedules of fun and competitive events for the year. However you choose to take advantage of Glenmoor’s largest and greenest asset, it’s there for you and your family to enjoy. Another sure sign that the snow is finally over is that I have already had meetings with our tennis pro, Ernie Fernandez and pool director, Lesia Riley-Harren. They’re convinced that the warm weather is here and, with their respective committees, have made some very cool plans for the summer. All in all, it’s shaping up to be a great year! Member Events By Lisa Sadeghian, Member Events Director I hope all of you have had a chance by now to come in and enjoy “Live from the Loch”! Thank you to those of you who have reached out to me letting me know who have been your favorite entertainers, that helps a lot. If you have a favorite local artist who you feel would be perfect for the Loch Bar please shoot me an email or give me a call and let me know. It’s great to bring a variety of music to the Loch. As April showers bring May flowers be sure to save these May dates: May 23rd will be our second annual Pig Roast. Last year’s was an absolute blast, so everyone come out and let’s do it again, the Gage Brothers will be joining us! May 30th will be a Casino Night to benefit cancer research at the Cleveland Clinic. I know many of you have been asking for a casino night, so be sure to save May 30th and come out and roll the dice! 2 Easter Brunch Easter Brunch, April 5th Same write up as last year Chef Tom has pricing Sunday, April 5th • 11am - 3pm Gather with your friends and family to celebrate Easter in the Chapel! Aside from warmer weather, more sunshine and golf, April begins to introduce this year’s offering of spring ingredients. There is no finer way to welcome spring and its new host of fare than a custom tasting menu with Chef Tom! Chef and his staff will serve a 6 course tasting menu highlighting the freshest ingredients our friend spring has to offer. The Chef’s Tables here at Glenmoor are a very special and unique dining experience, as each course is presented, Chef introduces the dish, explains his thought process while creating and takes questions. Be sure to join us in celebrating spring and make your reservation today. $60 per person Cooking Class - Sustainability Foods Saturday, April 18th at 2:00pm Make your reservations soon for Chef Tom’s final cooking class of the season! Earth Day falls in April and presents a great opportunity to explore the food we cook and eat. Sustainable farming and cooking is something Chef Tom is very passionate about and has based his style in the kitchen. Being responsible of what ingredients we use is safer, healthier and much more delicious!! During the 2 hour class Chef will discuss sustainability, demonstrate some techniques and provide hands on assistance in the preparation of vegetables, fruits, grains, and meats. This is more than just a class, it’s a social issue! Cook healthy, eat healthy, be healthy! Space is limited and this is the final class till after summer. Reservations required and appreciated as early as possible for preparation purposes. $45 per person Orin Swift & Prisoner Wine Dinner Thursday, April 23rd at 6:30pm Join Antonia Davis of Vanguard Wines as she presents the story of Orin Swift Wine Cellars and Prisoner Wine Cellars. At this very rare dinner, she will explore the big Rhone-like blends from California and Orin Swifts only estate wine from France. She will also look at the big blends that Prisoner Wine Company is now creating, together with their own version of a very aromatic white blend predominately made from Rhone varietals. You will also learn a bit about Jen Beloz, the innovative winemaker that Dave Phinney personally selected to take over his Prisoner that made him a legend in the wine industry. Don’t miss this wonderful wine dinner opportunity! Wine Society Members - $95 Non-Wine Society Members - $125 3 Greetings from the Golf Shop by Shawn Grimes, Director of Golf On the Cover: Dave and Kathy Thomas A Members’ perspective from Dave and Kathy: “Glenmoor Golf impressed us from the first day we entered the Pro Shop. Once we met Shawn and Meg and the rest of the staff, we knew Glenmoor had something more than a Jack Nicklaus designed and beautifully maintained golf course. The entire golf staff achieves that perfect mix of providing great customer service, yet treating its Members like family. They even know our sons, who both live out of state and are only here a few times a year. In fact, all of our family and friends we’ve brought to the club have commented on the warm and inviting atmosphere. Dave and I occasionally joke that it’s like Cheers -where everyone knows your name! We have participated in the leagues, tournaments, and events here. The golf staff works hard to deliver a fun and challenging time for all! Needless to say, we are already looking forward to dusting off our golf clubs for another great season of Glenmoor golf!” April Events to plan for: Good Friday Shotgun Open Golf Clinic Men’s Opening Day Event Turf Talk Friday, April 3rd 10:00am Saturday, April 8th10:00am Saturday, April 25th 9:00am by Rob Miller, Superintendent Hopefully by the time you’re reading this the snow has melted and spring weather has arrived. As Myron stated in last month’s newsletter, the grounds department has been working on several projects on the golf course. The wall by #17 green is being rebuilt, a walking bridge to cross the creek in front of #18 tee is being constructed as well as redoing the landscaping at #11 green turnaround. Also planned for this spring are the resurfacing of large portions of cart paths as well as the parking lots. I would also like to take a moment as I enter my 20th year as Superintendent to thank all Members of the Greens Committee both past and present who have helped to support the grounds department through the years. Make sure to get out and enjoy the golf course this spring and check out the new projects. Hope you all have a great year of golf and remember…keep it in the short grass. By Tom Schrenk, Executive Chef Happy April Glenmoor! As I’m sure most of us are, I am very excited to see spring arrive, although my reasons may be a bit different than some. Of course I love warmer weather, golf and all the fun that happens at Glenmoor during the warmer months, but April also starts two of my personal favorite things. First being spring/summer ingredients. As Chefs we are constantly wanting to cook new dishes and use new ingredients and when the seasons change we are granted that opportunity. The comfort foods and earthy flavor profiles give way to lighter, brighter fare. It’s exciting. Secondly April means new menus in our dining rooms, new ingredients = new menus. As I’ve done in the past, we will begin with the Black Heath menu, followed by the Loch Bar and ending in Scot’s Grille and the pool. As always, I invite all of your input and requests. I opened the floor up for discussion last year and received some really great and useful ideas. I am also pleased to announce that Saturday, April 4th we will be launching the new Scot’s Grille Brunch Menu. We are expanding brunch to include Saturday and Sunday of every week. Some new dishes to get excited about is our “Bananas Foster French Toast stuffed with Mascarpone Cream Cheese and Cinnamon” and the “Surf n’ Turf Eggs Benedict”. Designed to be fun for all, our new Brunch has something for everyone! I look forward to seeing everyone around the Club! Dining News By Randy May, Wine Society & Service Director April showers bring May flowers and hopefully great weather as we enter a new golf season. We have many new amenities in Scot’s Grille many of which cater to the kids including a $3 Sundae Bar on Tuesdays for the kids, “Build Your Own Pizza” on Thursdays and “Kids Eat Free” on Sunday. Bring the kids down to Scot’s and try out the new Kid’s Menu. Kids also have the opportunity to earn Kid’s Cash which can be redeemed for specific items throughout the Club. See Gail Wigfield on all of these great kid’s attractions! Prom season is right around the corner and it is definitely not too early to make your reservation for the special, memorable evening. Come see Randy in the Black Heath and he and the staff will create that “picture perfect” evening. Black Heath is not just a special occasion dining destination. Feel free to come in anytime and have the staff provide that special dining experience of which we are quite proud. The Loch bar is doing some great and amazing things! We have Happy Hour from 4-6pm, Monday through Thursday! For Beer and Wine Society Members this extends until 7pm! We are doing $1 Taco night on Mondays with $5 Margaritas. We have Ladies Night every Wednesday from 6pm to 9pm with half priced drinks and appetizers for all Ladies in addition to a surprise “gift” for the Ladies as well. We have “Live from the Loch” every weekend with some amazing talents from around the state! The Beer Society is proud to announce that we are having a Beer Pairing Dinner as well as two Beer Tastings every Quarter! Our next Beer Tasting is going to be on April 10th! Mark your calendars and call the front desk to RSVP. Sparklers from Around the World Tasting Thursday, April 9th at 6:30pm Be a “Bubblehead” and join Kathleen Smith of Wine Trends as she hosts “Sparklers from Around the World” on Thursday, April 9th at 6:30pm.
