2 APOSTOLIC ACCENT May 2013
I can’t do it…I can’t make it happen …I can’t, I can’t,
I can’t….these words seem to permeate out of my mouth
at times when they are so untrue . In Philippians 4:13,
it says, “I can do all things through Christ which
strengtheneth me .” For several weeks now, I have been
watching how I word things because I know that it is
not a matter of whether I can’t, it ’s a matter of whether
I make it a priority, whether I’m willing or have the
desire to do it. It doesn’t matter if I am capable or what
I can do but it is about what God can do and will do
through me .
I am reminded of a story in Exodus about Moses…
Exodus 4:10, “And Moses said unto the LORD, O my
Lord , I [am] not eloquent, neither heretofore , nor since
thou hast spoken unto thy servant: but I [am] slow of
speech , and of a slow tongue .”
So, he basically said he couldn’t speak to Pharaoh .
It ’s the ‘I can’t ’ spirit. He said this even after the Lord
promised a land flowing with milk and honey, He
showed Moses He would be with him and would help
him with his speech . He had him throw a rod down
and it turned to a serpent and when he picked it
back up it became a rod …and if that wasn’t enough ,
he had him put his hand to his bosom and it was
covered with leprosy and when he put it back it was
gone .
But Moses continued with the ‘I can’t ’ even after all
that. Imagine how great the story would have been if
he would have just said , “I can!”
When God calls you to do something, when God
calls you to go somewhere …when God says something
period , you might as well do it…when that ‘I can’t ’
attitude gets on you could end up in the end up like
Saul and loose the kingdom or better yet, you could
end up in the belly of a whale like Jonah . When you
have the ‘I can’ attitude , the end is so much more
amazing!
Stop saying ‘I can’t ’ and start saying ‘I can’ and see
what God will do!

Revival on the
Left Coast
By Jerry Miranda
THE BIBLE TEACHES US TO
GIVE TRIBUTE AND HONOR TO
THOSE DESERVING. WE LIVE IN A
SOCIETY IN WHICH EACH PERSON
G I V E S
M O R E
CREDIT TO
HIMSELF
THAN TO
OTHERS.
Philippians
2:3
says,
“ L e t
nothing be
done through strife or vainglory;
but in lowliness of mind let
each esteem other better than
themselves.” The Bible teaches
us how to esteem others better
than ourselves. The word “esteem”
means to show approval,
condition of being honored, to
respect or regard highly. I believe
as born again Christians we
should strive to put our brothers
and sisters first.
Imagine…a Holy Ghost Crusade
in one of the largest auditoriums in
the city, cars and busses coming in
from neighboring states, people
standing in long lines hours
before the event even starts, over
2000 in attendance, and over 500
receiving the Holy Ghost with the
evidence of speaking in other
tongues… El Salvador? Ethiopia?
4 APOSTOLIC ACCENT May 2013
Mexico? …nope, Salem, Oregon!
But how could such a thing
happen in Oregon! It is not in
the Bible Belt of America. It is
not a state that
is
considered
religious. Far from
it! It is considered
one if the most
liberal, anti-God,
least-religious
states
in
the
Union.
Oregon
is one of the first
states to legalize euthanasia,
allow same sex marriages,
support partial birth-abortion
and recently legalized the use of
marijuana.
So how could God favor such a
place?
2 Chronicles
7:14-15
says
“If My people
who are called
by My name
will
humble
themselves,
and pray and
seek My face,
and turn from
their wicked ways, then I will hear
from heaven, and will forgive
their sin and heal their land. Now
My eyes will be open and My ears
attentive to prayer made in this
place...”
We have been celebrating
an annual conference called
“UNIDOS por Su Nombre” which
simply translated means “UNITED
by His Name”. It has been a
tremendous blessing to all that
have attended these past 6 years.
The men of God that have spoken
at this conference have impacted
our lives, our ministries and our
churches. Thank God for men like
Elias Limones, Mario Oceguera,
Jason Aguilar, Mark Drost, G.
Jorge Medina, John Jairo Garcia,
Loammi Diaz, Joe Rios Jr, Larry
Romero, Domingo Zuniga, Misael
Marin, Francisco Cortez, Ronnie
Mullins, and many more.
Without a doubt, we have been
blessed with the best!
UNIDOS
is
a Jesus-Name
leadership
conference
that seeks to
teach and train
leaders for the
current harvest
of souls. It is
a conference
designed to push the leader to
his next level in ministry and also
in his daily walk with God. It is a
conference that recognizes that
the Church is one body. There is
only one name that saves: Jesus!
There is only one Father. There is
only one head of this body.
I have had pastors call me after
UNIDOS and tell me that they
cried all the way back to their
cities. 4 hours driving and crying
with a renewed burden for the
lost in their cities. Many have
called me to tell me that they
came as a last attempt to see if
they still had a ministry. They
were ready to throw in the towel.
Some have come unsure of their
place in ministry, not sure if they
were called to be a pastor or an
evangelist …and have found their
calling reinforced.
For 6 years we celebrated this
Conference on the first Monday
and Tuesday of March. Since we
were focusing on leadership,
we felt that
a
weekend
would
only
take
away
instead
of
give. Monday
and Tuesday
also allowed
us to pick from the cream of the
crop. Almost every speaker that
we called to invite was always
available! The first year we had
about 250 in attendance and this
last year we were nearing 600 in
attendance…on a Monday and
Tuesday!
But as 2013 approached, I began
to feel something different in the
Spirit. I felt like it was a time to
test all that we have been called,
taught and trained to do. 6 years
of leadership training…let’s put it
to practice! We have been training
and encouraging ministries. This
year, let’s focus on the lost! Let’s
have a Holy Ghost Crusade and
see hundreds upon hundreds
filled with the Holy Ghost! Let’s
rent a large
auditorium,
bring
in
a
draw,
invite
a
powerful
speaker,
and
let’s see God do
it! Well ...easier
said than done.
We decided to invite one of
the most popular Jesus Name
choirs to UNIDOS 2013: Coro
Tabernaculo Cristiano (CT Choir)
from Santa Ana, California. They
had ministered at Madison
Square Gardens in NYC, Honda
Center in So Cal, The Philippines,
Mexico City and various other
places. They are not just singers
and musicians… they minister
in
worship
and in praise.
They set the
atmosphere!
They would
help bring in
the crowd. We
also
invited
one of the most successful Holy
Ghost Crusade speakers in the
UPCI: Rev. Mark Drost. We felt that
the combination of this Choir and
this speaker would be the catalyst
for a Holy Ghost Outpouring!
I knew that the only way that
we were going to see the results
that we wanted to see was by
getting Heaven’s attention. The
Bible teaches us that there are a
couple of things that attracts God:
One is UNITY! Genesis 11 teaches
us that when God saw that man
spoke ONE language, and were
ONE people, and had ONE goal,
HE came down from Heaven. The
attracting power of UNITY! The
other one is prayer and fasting. So,
15 churches UNITED in prayer and
fasting for
a common
goal. From
December
30th
March 9th,
we
had
70
Days
of Power!
70 days of prayer and fasting! 70
days of seeking after God. 70 days
of crying out for our cities! 70
days of repentance! 15 churches
united together with this same
cause ...and God answered!
Our daily prayer, amongst 15
congregations, for 70 days, was
threefold:
1. Pray for workers. (We
have enough sinners.) The harvest
is white, we need w o r k e r s .
Everyday we prayed: “Lord, send
workers…” “Raise workers.”
2. Pray for the Event: Pray
that the Choir be anointed. Pray
that the speaker be ready. Pray
that the sinners be many and that
they come hungry.
3. Pray for finances. We
have no money. This will cost
about $20,000. We are taking a step of faith, and if God is
in this, HE will supply!
Personally, the 70 days of Power
greatly impacted my own daily
walk. I would wake up at 4am
every morning and spend time
with my Heavenly Father. Every
Tuesday morning I would drive
45 miles for 5am prayer in my
daughter church in Tigard. Every
Wednesday morning I would be
at the mother church in Salem at
5am. God began to speak to me
in awesome ways. My mind and
heart was opened up to many

wonders in His Word. He began
to reveal me many things that I
had not understood. Of the many
things He
showed
me, one
of them
was that
I
was
100% in
His will.
This was
going to
happen!
We were
going to see an awesome move
of the Holy Ghost here in Oregon!
One of our main challenges was
how to fill the auditorium.
Our plans were that on Friday,
we would have leadership
sessions all day and end with a
powerful evening service. Our
speaker’s were Marvin Reyes
from Atlanta, Georgia, John J.
Garcia from Valencia, Spain and
Joshua Abrego from Christian
Life College in Stockton. …and
they came pumped and ready!
Because of the change in venue, I
rented a smaller
sanctuary for
that
Friday
with 295 seats.
Almost
600
people showed
up! The place
was packed and
the preaching
was powerful!
They were all
in sync in the
Holy Ghost and
challenged us
to believe for
greater things in God!
On Saturday, the only thing
6 APOSTOLIC ACCENT May 2013
on the schedule was the Holy
Ghost Crusade with 100’s upon
100’s receiving the Holy Ghost.
The focus was
to have new
people come
and have a
life changing
encounter
with God. Coro
Ta b e r n a c u l o
Cristiano from
Los
Angeles
was to minister.
Mark Drost will
be preaching the Word of Faith.
It would all be bilingual: English/
Spanish. And it will be held at the
Salem Armory Auditorium located
on the Oregon State Fairgrounds
in the center of Salem, Oregon.
The Armory has 3,540 seats. We
want to fill every one! But how?
This is where Biblical principles
come in: We felt that the CT
Choir was a big enough draw in
order for us to charge $10.00 per
ticket to come to the event. We
advertized on the radio, through
posters, a digital sign 11’ x 40’ on
Our goal was to have 3000 in
attendance. But I also knew that
advertizing alone will not do it, it
must be personal, it must be word
of mouth. So, I got our churches
together and challenged them
to make it a personal matter to
help fill the auditorium. I asked
for everyone to buy 4 tickets
beside their own, and to invite
four (4) friends to the concert. In
the parable of the sower, Jesus
teaches us that 1 out of every 4
is hungry and ready to receive.
I promised them, through the
authority of the Word of God,
that, at least 1 of the 4 friends that
we bring will have a life-changing
encounter with the Lord! And
how much did it cost? $40. What
a deal! 300 of us committed to
buy 4 tickets, besides our own,
and bring four friends. 4 x 300 =
1200. Now add the original 300
and we get 1500 people! So our
local churches alone can halfway
fill the auditorium! The rest of the
arena will fill through the other
churches and advertising.
Because of the $10 cost of every
the busiest intersection in Salem, ticket, people were choosy as to
and heavily through social media. who they invited. They weren’t
just passing them out like tracts,
but
were
prayerfully
asking
God
for
direction
and
then
committing
themselves to
their guests. Let
me tell you… it
works!
The
other
area of uttermost importance was
Altar Workers: our goal was to have
at least 300 ready to pray with the
hungry souls. In the weeks prior
to UNIDOS, we held seminars at
our various churches to train and
prepare men and women. We
wanted to have 300, but ended
up with 200 ready, trained and
excited altar workers spread out
throughout the auditorium.
They say that it’s all in the
preparation. Well, we did all we
could do. We prayed, fasted, gave,
invited, worked, sacrificed, visited
and then did it all over again.
Now, all we could do was wait on
the Lord.
On Saturday, March 9th, we
had done all we could. We had
fasted and prayed for 70 days. The
auditorium was ready. The sound
system was set up. The lighting
crew had prepped the lights.
The instruments were tuned and
ready. The choir was prayed up.
The ushers were at their post.
Parking attendants were ready.
Security was checking doors. The
Box Office was staffed. About
20 pastors united in prayer and
anointed the entire place with oil.
The preacher was anxious. Now,
God… it’s your turn!
…AND DID GOD SHOW UP!
An hour and a half before the
doors were open
we had a line a
half-block long of
people waiting to
get in. From 4:30
to 6pm there was
a steady stream
of “sinners and
saints” coming in
through the doors.
It was crazy! The
atmosphere was electrifying. You
could feel the presence of God the
second you walked into the place.
People were everywhere. There
was an expectancy in the air...
…AND
GOD
DID
NOT
DISAPPOINT!
The choir ministered in powerful
worship. The praise elevated the
Name of Jesus to higher levels.
The people were hungry and
ready. Then Evangelist Mark Drost
and interpreter Marvin Reyes took
the stage. He preached a short
time before leading everyone to
repentance and then proclaiming
and releasing the Word of Faith.
The entire auditorium became an
altar with altar workers scattered
throughout the place. Before it
was over, more than 500 people
received the Holy Ghost with
the evidence of speaking in
other tongues! Words fail me to
adequately describe my feelings
that night. I felt so humbled.
How God of Heaven saw it fit to
visit “little ole Salem” with such
a tremendous manifestation! I
began to cry. I could not contain
myself. I was standing in the
middle of the bottom floor with
people all around me speaking
in tongues, tears streaming down
their cheeks. Some were dancing
in the Holy Ghost, others crying
out, some just standing there with
their hands high in the air…as the
Holy Ghost took over their lives!
There were people of different
color, who spoke different
languages, with different cultures,
who became ONE PEOPLE by the
power of the Holy Ghost!
The atmosphere was still
so powerful that in the foyer,
as everyone is leaving the
auditorium, a young lady received
the Holy Ghost speaking in
tongues!
The following day, March 10th,
Stockton’s Christian Life Center,
pastured by Nathaniel Haney,
had a Holy Ghost crusade with
Jack Cunningham and almost 400
received the Holy Ghost! That’s
almost 1000 people receiving the
Holy Ghost in a 24 hour period
on the West Coast! Senior Class
Student Body President at CLC,
Joshua Abrego, had the privilege
of being in both meetings.
Saturday, he was in Salem and
Sunday morning flew to Stockton.
Wow! What an awesome
experience!
Church, this is our time. Now
is our hour. God desires to pour
out His Spirit upon all flesh. Can
someone believe it and act on it?
Only eternity will tell the whole
story. Only then will we see the
impact and effect that this Holy
Ghost event had in so many
peoples lives. And I am proud to
be a part of this great influx of
souls for his Kingdom.◊

It’s Worth it!
Lately, Joe has been developing
a greater thirst for God. He has
committed to daily prayer, been
more expressive in worship,
remained faithful in God’s service
and increased his devotion to
God.
One Sunday night, Joe felt
moved to sacrificially give to
missions. He had no steady income
and the only money he had was in
a savings account designated to
purchase a guitar. For a moment,
he considered ignoring the
burden to give. However, it wasn’t
long until he decided to commit

all of his savings to missions.
A couple of weeks later, Joe’s
uncle unexpectedly gave him
an acoustic guitar. Although
Joe was grateful, he was also
disappointed. He’d had his
heart set on an electric guitar. In
addition, he thought the guitar
from his uncle was ugly. It didn’t
occur to him that this might be
God’s response to his giving. Soon
after, he began to take lessons.
His teacher immediately took an
interest in his guitar and asked to
examine it. He inquired how Joe
had obtained it and Joe shared his
story. The teacher informed Joe
that it was worth approximately
$2,500. Joe was astounded and
it was then that he realized –
God had not only blessed him
for his giving but had given him
something far more valuable than
what he would have been able to
afford.◊

Will we be like the man in the bed by the
window? Will we make the choice when we
wake every morning to find the good? Will we
see peace in the storm? Will we see joy in the
sadness? Will we see healing in the sickness?
I declare in my heart today that I WILL be like
the blind man!
There is tremendous happiness in making
others happy, despite our own situations.
Shared grief is half the sorrow, but happiness
when shared, is doubled. If you want to feel
rich, just count all of the things you have that
money can’t buy. “Today is a gift, that’s why it
is called the PRESENT”. ◊

May 2013 APOSTOLIC ACCENT 11
Missionary (mish –
uh – ner- ee)
By James Bigelow
Interestingly,
the
word
“missionary” is not found in most
translations of the Bible. It is simply
the Latin way (from “missio”) to
say “apostle”. It means “sent one.”
An Old Testament prophet, Isaiah,
was called to be a missionary. He
testified, “I heard the voice of the
Lord, saying, Whom shall I send,
and who will go for us? Then said
I, Here am I; send me. And he said,
Go, and tell this people…” (Isa.
6:8-9). Thus it may be said that a
missionary is a person sent from
God with a message for a certain
people group.
In this sense, John the Baptist
was a missionary. “There was a
man sent from God, whose name
was John. The same came for a
witness, to bear witness of the
Light” (John 1:16-17).
A few translations of the
Bible use the word “missionary”
in connection with the word
“apostle” as in Mar 6:30, The
apostles [sent out as missionaries]
came back and gathered together
to Jesus, and told Him all that they
had done and taught. (AMP Bible).
Notice that those who had been
sent returned to give a report of
their activities on the mission
field.
The United Pentecostal Church
organization is more fully
defined by the additional word
“International”. We currently have
a missionary presence in 203
12 APOSTOLIC ACCENT May 2013
nations. It is our desire to fulfill the
commission of Christ to “Go ye
into all the world and preach the
gospel to every creature” (Mark
16:15).
After it has been confirmed
that certain men and women
have been called of God to take
the gospel to a particular nation
or people, they are appointed
by our Global Missions Division
personnel and then given an
itinerary to travel in North America
for 12 – 18 months on deputation.
Their objective in visiting our
churches is to make pastors and
saints aware of the need for the
gospel of God in the country of
their calling and to solicit their
prayers and financial backing.
When they have served overseas
for four years, these families
return to North America for a
short time of additional training
and reuniting with family and
friends before they embark again
on deputation to report on their
activities and seek to gain the
further backing of local churches
so they can expand their efforts to
evangelize and make disciples.
Here is some information about
the missionaries who will soon be
here, along with the services that
have been scheduled for them as
of April 25, 2013.
Shane & Dana Hayes and their
children (Jordan – 15, Joshua – 13,
and Elizabeth – 10). The family is
traveling in a Fifth Wheeler and
will be here May 21 – 26. They
will be with Pastors Goodwin on
Wednesday, Miranda on Thursday,
Whorton on Sunday morning, and
Seibold on Sunday afternoon.
The Hayes accepted received
intermediate
missionary
appointment in 2004 and returned
to San Andres to continue their
work they had begun under the
AIM program of establishing a selfsupporting church and raising
up leaders. After accomplishing
this, they began to feel the Lord
directing them to Chile, where
they were able to move in January
2010. Brother Hayes is currently
the Youth Supervisor for Chile as
well as pastor of the church in
Chillan. He preaches evangelistic
crusades throughout the country.
Sister Hayes is involved in Ladies
Ministries and is a gifted teacher.
When they return to the field,
they plan to move to the capital
city, Santiago, and oversee the
Bible school.
So far on deputations they have
seen over 200 receive the Holy
Ghost. For more information and
a video, see Chile Missions on
Facebook.
Joseph & Fanny Cooney and
Jaylon, age 4. They are travelling
in a van and will be here June
18 – 23. They will be with Pastor
Eastham on Sunday morning.
Joe Cooney is a first generation
Apostolic whose family is from
Ireland, born and raised Catholic
until his Spirit infilling in 1995. As
an AIMer, he has spent over three
years in Ireland and three and a
half years in London, England,
ministering
and
assisting
missionaries. Fanny Nowacki
Cooney is a fourth generation
Apostolic from France. She is an
experienced interpreter, translates
Bible college curriculum for GATs
and has done work for Endtime
Magazine and numerous other
projects. They have had great
success evangelizing throughout
the United Kingdom, Ireland,
Europe and the United States,
seeing hundreds filled with the
Holy Ghost. The Cooneys received
full missionary appointment in
2010 and will return to Ireland
to plant churches and continue
evangelizing the country.
See
Ireland/Joe
Cooney
Family on Facebook for photos
and updates on their current
deputation.
Jacob & Mandy Palma are
traveling in a van and will be
here July 9 – 14. They will be with
Pastor Graves on Wednesday and
with Pastor Steve Johnson on
Sunday morning.
These are newly appointed
Missionaries to Uruguay, South
America. After graduating from

LTC (Ret.) Mary Katherine Carson is our MCH Clinical Nurse Specialist RNCOB, BSN, MSN. She is a primary instructor to staff in caring for mothers and
their babies. We team up to give Pregnancy & Infant Loss briefs to staff.
Here is a young mother is acquiring and utilizing grief support information for a
loss of a friends baby.
Chaplain Rendon is talking with a new mother and discussing marital
relationship resources.
Strong Bonds Couples Training 14-16 MAR 13 at the Hilton North Myrtle
Beach, SC. Training staff SGT Songer, CH Israel, and CH Rendon
Chaplain Rendon teaching L.I.N.K.S. Many of the couples enjoyed the
interlinking bonds associated with the Relationship Attachment Model.
Prior to training CH Rendon thought of a fun practical exercise to conduct
before the candle light dinner. Couples were asked to share a Hershey's kiss
with each other without using their hands. It was quite funny.
As usual, every couple complimented the hotel accommodations. Here our
couples enjoyed breakfast and lunch on the 16th floor in the Dunes ball room.
The view off to the left over looked the beach and ocean. Very beautiful.
Does Your Church
Believe in Hitting
Kids?
By David Reynolds
“He that spareth his rod hateth his son:
but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes”
Proverbs 13:24
Due to the fact that I was a public
school Principal –and had written
the book for parents, ‘Handle With
Care’, I was asked to testify in court
on behave of a parent of one of
our Sunday School children--in a
child custidy case.
The Lawyer asked me, “Does
your church believe in hitting
kids?”
My reply was, “No, we do not
believe in hitting kids—but
we do believe in spanking our
children—at times.”
His next question was, “By what
authority do you spank kids?”
My reply was, “My authority is
the very Bible that I ‘swore’ on as I
took my oath in this court”.
I glanced over at the
Judge, and he was smiling. We
won the case.
No! we do not believe in hitting
children –we believe in spanking
children, “betimes”. There is a
difference. The first is done in
anger and frustration; the second
is done in love and concern for
the child.
“ For whom the Lord loveth He
chasteneth, and scourgeth every
son whom he receiveth.” Hebrews
12:6
“If his children forsake my law,
and walk not in my judgement ...
then will I visit their transgression
with the rod and their iniquity
with stripes. Nevertheless my
loving-kindness will I not utterly
take from him, nor suffer my
faithfulness to fail.” Psalm 89: 30,32
Notice, spanking is done in love
and is directed at the infraction
whereas ‘hitting’ is a punishment
directed at the person. Hitting is
done to hurt the child. Spanking
is done to change the behavior.
Hitting is done in anger -to the
head, to the face or anywhere it
happens to land. Spanking is done
under control and applied to the
‘seat of understanding’. Hitting is
done with belt buckles and lamp
cords. Spanking is done with a
rod, a switch or a paddle. Hitting
leaves physical scars and bruises.
Spanking smarts and stings but
does not physically abuse.
Hitting seems to be done often
and randomly depending upon
the emotions of the parents.
Spanking is kept for those certain
times when there has been direct
disobedience, open defiance, and
the child has pitted his will against
ours. His will must be broken but
never his spirit.
“ Foolishness is bound in the
heart of a child, but the rod of
correction shall drive it far from
him.” Prov. 22:15
Conclusion
Finally, with spanking there
should always be a time after
the crying for love, teaching,
counseling and for forgiveness.
“ Come, and let us return unto
the Lord: for he hath torn and he
will heal us; he hath smitten and
he will bind us up.” Hosea 6:1
No, -we do not believe in hitting
children.
Yes, - we do believe in spanking
“betimes”.
There is a difference.◊
