Although we are still steeped in the lessons of our ancestors’ journey from slavery to freedom, our Divine instructions are now focused on the building of the Mishkan – the Tabernacle – the sacred place for G-d’s presence to dwell among the people. We are told that everyone must give both financially and through their volunteerism to effectuate the Mishkan. Those instructions remind of us the necessity of communal participation to truly create a sacred space for G-d and to ensure its financial vitality. All the more so, when we collaborate, give freely of the time and effort, and work together with the goal of creating an entity that is something much greater than ourselves, we grow together in sacred purpose as we fulfill our obligation to build a sacred space for G-d (and each other). Dr. Alan Plumer Dr. Alan Goldfischer Gastroenterology 90 Crystal Run Road, Middletown, NY 10940 Just a few weeks ago, Montebello Jewish Center celebrated its first Shabbaton – a full Shabbat dedicated to praying, community-building, learning, laughing, singing, eating and simply enjoying each other’s company. With many thanks to everyone who helped plan this event and especially to those who came throughout Shabbat and participated, we succeeded both in fulfilling countless mitzvot and in deepening our love and commitment to G-d, to each other and to our wonderful congregation. From services and dinner on Friday evening, to Torah discussions, lectures, singdowns and games during Shabbat, and culminating with Ma’ariv and Havdalah, we had extraordinary Phone: 845-703-8806 Fax: 845-703-9058 Everywhere you need us! MARCH 2012 THE VOICE/KOLENU 26 MARCH 2012 THE VOICE/KOLENU participation from our congregation and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. But ultimately, just as the Mishkan could not have been constructed without the support of the greater community, so too our Shabbaton would not have been successful without your help, support and commitment to see this new endeavor come to fruition. Thank you for giving of yourself to ensure that our Shabbaton succeeded for everyone! I enjoyed every dimension of our Shabbaton. On a greater communal level, it was wonderful to see so many people of all ages interacting and growing together both socially and religiously. It was inspiring to hear our congregation’s commitment to Israel expressed in discussion with Daniel Sonnenschein, our Rockland County shaliach. All the more so, it was encouraging and promising for our future to have so many children throughout the day enjoying Shabbat at Montebello Jewish Center. Their presence, participation, enthusiasm and laughter enhanced every moment of our Shabbaton. Many have shared their support of a D’var Torah and breakfast prior to services and, with the support of the Ritual and Kiddush Committees, I hope to incorporate this structure more often on Shabbat. But perhaps most of all, I enjoyed simply talking with different members of our congregation throughout the day. It was rejuvenating to be in such (continued on page 4) 3 Message from the Rabbi (continued) a warm and relaxed environment, enjoying and appreciating each other’s company. Our Sages teach that we must not separate ourselves from the community, and our Shabbaton illustrated for us the essence of that teaching. As a sacred community we can do anything so long as we are united in the goal of our communal success. When we give, volunteer and participate, we pro- Support Our Supporters actively ensure that Montebello Jewish Center is and continues to be a sacred place for G-d’s presence to dwell and for all of us to enjoy. May we continue to give and appreciate each other as we build a beautiful future for ourselves and for our future generations at Montebello Jewish Center. I have plants budding outside my house, and I think I can hear the grass growing! Purim is around the corner and I can’t remember when my property wasn’t covered in snow at this time of the year. “THE HILLS ARE ALIVE WITH THE SOUND OF . . . “ I recommend you all come to the Purim Shpiel to hear the rest of the sentence. There is no question that our Purim celebration is one of the highlights of the year at MJC. The kids are in full regalia, and so are the adults. It all starts with our ice cream social and costume parade, followed by our one and only “Meshugenna Players” performing “The Sound of Tzuris”, an original musical extravaganza! The laughs continue as we begin the Reading of the Meggilah, led by none other than Bigfoot, or Jesse James, or wait, it’s Spiderman….. no.. it’s Rabbi Zimbalist in whatever outlandish costume he comes up with this year. I’ve heard that people have seen the Rabbi doing push-ups in the shul, so I think he might come this year as Arnold Schwartzenegger! It’s all in great fun and a good time is had by everyone! The lessons of Purim, however, are more sobering. Standing up to tyranny and facing the possibility of extermination are tests that Jews have faced down through the generations. Haman’s threat to destroy all the Jews in the kingdom is no different than what Jews and Israel face from the maniacal regime in Iran. Our fate as Jews is inextricably tied together whether we are wearing black hats, or Armani suits. When facing destruction, there is no distinction among Jews. Purim’s message is one of hope and survival. I hope to see you all at our celebrations so we may pray and laugh together as a community. The Sound of Tzuris Mark Kamen President The Messhugehnah Players are at it again! This year they will serenade you with the music of The Sound of Tzuris. Don’t miss the raucous, zany antics of MJC’s Purim shpiellers and their unique take on the story of Esther. Join us on Wednesday March 7, 2011 at approximately 6:30 as we rock the house with the Sound of Tzuris. MARCH 2012 THE VOICE/KOLENU MARCH 2012 THE VOICE/KOLENU Support our Supporters Family Friday Night Dinner One of my favorite times here at Montebello Jewish Center is our family Friday night dinners. I truly enjoy the camaraderie that comes with the evening’s events as they unfold. The sanctuary seats are filled with members and their families of all ages, the services are lively and participatory, and there’s an aroma in the air from the delicious meal that is awaiting us! Everyone is anxious to get their table assignments and partake in a celebratory Shabbat dinner, together as a congregation, together as friends. Thank you Juan, once again for setting up our room to perfection as well as our tables for dinner. A most special Thank You to Ross Plumer. Ross always happily volunteers to help with any task related to this event, and others at MJC, but specifically at our dinners he is a key player. He arrives early and stays to the very end. Whether it’s moving chairs, setting up the food, running back and forth to the basement for supplies, or, the most thankless part, cleaning up when it’s all over. Thank you again Ross for invaluable assistance! Gregg A. Brunwasser, Manager Last month over 80 people joined in this ruach-filled dinner event, as we I look forward to seeing you all at kicked off our 1st Shabbaton. Sincere our next family Friday night dinner! Thank You to Rabbi Zimbalist and CanAndrea Caloras tor Freedman. The adults learned new melodies with me, studied the Ten Commandments with Rabbi Zimbalist, and socialized with their friends and children. People of all ages filled every inch of the minyan room for a wonderfully relaxing yoga session with Laura Schneider. Many families simply “hung out” in the social hall, enjoying the company of friends while their kids played. We joined together for Minchah, followed by S’eudat Sh’lishi (the 3rd meal) and Ma’ariv. At the conclusion of Ma’ariv, our students made Havdalah candles and spice bags as we concluded Shabbat together with a beautiful Havdalah ceremony. While some of our members came and went throughout Shabbat, many of our families remained here all day, and had as one 3rd grader put it “the best Shabbat of her life!” March Donations In addition to those mentioned above who helped run sessions, there are many people who helped behind the scenes. Thank you to Michele Verhoeff and Susan Kroll for doing the shopping and food preparation for all of the meals during Shabbat day. Thank you to Jaine Rahimi, Bruce Yore, Marsha Gerson and Karyn Storm, who helped bake the cupcakes and cookies everyone enjoyed decorating and eating on Shabbat afternoon. Thank you to Darlene Mollov for preparing the Havdalah craft. Finally, thank you to Juan Roman and Ross Plumer for all of their help in the kitchen and for setting up the rooms for the various activities. It was so wonderful to witness so many people in our community enjoying Shabbat together. We didn’t need to ask if people were having fun, because it was evident on everyone’s faces. MARCH 2012 THE VOICE/KOLENU 10 MARCH 2012 THE VOICE/KOLENU 19 Message from Sisterhood Our evening with Cantor Michelle Freedman was a fun and informative evening. Cantor Freedman in her exuberant way went back to her childhood and told us about her upbringing, her interest in music, and how she came to study at the Seminary and Cantorial school. Cantor Freedman told us how much easier it was for a man to get a job. What did surprise me is the number of women in this program — there are more women than men in this program now, and it is easier for a woman to get a job. The congregations are getting use to having women’s voices praying with them. Thank you to all of our congregants for supporting our Mishloach Manot program. You have had the mitzvah of giving on Purim, and with the funds that were collected, you are helping to support our shul. I hope you enjoyed the food in your bags. Much thought goes into the purchase of these goodies. Sisterhood supplies the hamentashen to our Nursery School, Religious School and the entire congregation. Thank you to Barbara Steinberg for heading this program, for Anat Kuperman for preparing and printing the cards, and to Susan Kroll, Barbara Steinberg and myself (Barbara Kleinberg) for doing the shopping. The day we packed the bags, we had many of our Sisterhood members and their children helping to make sure each bag was filled properly. Thank you to everyone who helped.
