Those stakes, combined with assets Isabel dos Santos owns in at least one bank in Angola, have pushed her net worth over the $1 billion mark, according to research by FORBES, making the 40-year-old Africa’s first woman billionaire. A spokesperson for Dos Santos in Portugal did not respond to a request for comment on her net worth status. Isabel dos Santos studied engineering at King’s College in London, where she lived with her mother, who is divorced from President dos Santos. She opened her first business in 1997, at age 24, in Luanda in Isabel dos Santos Angola– a restaurant called Miami Beach. She has come a long way since then. She sits on the boards of several companies in Angola and Portugal and has been instrumental in making business decisions. In May 2012, she was reported to increase her stake in ZON Multimedia, Portugal’s largest cable TV company, from 4.9% to 14.9%. She later boosted her stake again via two of her shareholding companies, Kento and Jadeium, and now owns 28.8% of ZON, worth a recent $385 million. She sits on ZON’s board and is the company’s largest shareholder. The president’s daughter also owns 19.5% of Banco BPI, one of Portugal’s largest publicly traded banks. That stake is worth $465 million. In Angola, Isabel dos Santos sits on the board of Banco BIC and is reported to own a 25% stake in the bank, worth a conservative $160 million. Several sources knowledgeable about telecom in Angola told FORBES that she sits on the board of Unitel – one of the country’s two mobile phone networks – and is a 25% shareholder. That stake alone is worth $1 billion at a minimum, according to several telecom analysts. A spokeswoman for Dos Santos in Lisbon said she could not comment on Dos Santos’ Angolan holdings. How did a 40-year-old woman who started out with just one restaurant come into such a vast fortune? I asked Peter Lewis, a professor of African Studies at Johns Hopkins University’s School for Advanced International Studies. He did not review the information about Isabel dos Santos’ holding and he said he didn’t know the specifics of Dos Santos’ wealth, but he did shed some light on how business is done in Angola: “It’s clear through documented work that the ruling party and the President’s inner circle have a lot of business interests. The source of funds and corporate governance are very murky,” Lewis explained. “The central problem in Angola is the complete lack of transparency. We can’t trace the provenance of these funds.” Angola lies on the western coast of southern Africa, a country of 18 million people living in an oil- and diamond-rich area about twice the size of Texas. The country endured 27 years of civil war, which ended in 2002. Jose Eduardo dos Santos has been president since 1979, four years after the country gained its independence from Portugal. “When you tease out the ownership and controlling interests in Angola it reads like a Who’s Who of [the President’s] family members and party and military chiefs,” said Professor Lewis. A spokeswoman for Isabel dos Santos in Portugal says the professor’s statements are speculative, unreasonable and without academic merit; she insists that Dos Santos’ investments have been presented with maximum transparency from publicly listed companies based on European law. An additional important factor: a huge influx of cash into Angola. Oil revenues skyrocketed in the years following the end of the civil war, climbing from $3 billion in 2002 to $60 billion in 2008, according to Lewis. “They are fixing a few roads and there are some railways and there are a lot of cranes in Luanda,” Lewis explained. “But they Isabel dos Santos are awash in cash; $5 billion has been documented in illicit financial flows.” (An update on those oil revenue figures: Take them lightly. A Global Witness report recommended by a Forbes colleague points out many contradictions in how various arms of the Angolan government reported the oil production, exports and pricing.) This doesn’t answer the specifics of the origin of Isabel dos Santos’ fortune, but it provides some helpful context. FORBES aims to delve further into this issue. WHY WE MUST BE PROACTIVE By Helen L. Burleson, Doctor of Public Administration We made many gains during the Civil Rights Movement of the ‘60’s. Today many of those rights remain a figment of our memories for we have gone to sleep at the wheels of justice. Each of us must make a commitment to become a spoke in the wheel that propels us toward progress and leverage. Helen Burleson The Hispanics or Latinos, if you prefer, have taken a page from our Civil Rights Movement and they have been like the constant drip of rain that breaks a rock down into sand. This cooperative effort on the part of Republicans and Democrats to address immigration is the direct result of the Latinos making themselves indispensable. The Republicans need their votes if ever they are to gain the White House. Don’t be fooled. The Republicans have not had a change of heart; they’ve realized that that voting block is essential. They are now courting the Hispanics. Why aren’t they courting us? Racism. Not only that, they feel that, we, are in the Democrats’ pockets. The Democrats take us for granted. ‘Tis true, we fare better under Democratic administrations, however, we need to use our leverage to our advantage. That leverage is our vote! Very cleverly, we should flirt with the Republicans while making the Democrats nervous thinking we will bolt if they don’t address our grievances. Let each party fight over our vote they way they are now fighting for the Latino vote. What is our strategy? How do we do this? First, we call our local Republican headquarters and ask for a speaker to come to address our block club, our community organization or our social or civic organization. Next, we get ourselves invited to their meetings. Once they know how many votes we control and we are in the process of deciding which party to vote for, they will gladly, falsely embrace us, just as they doing with the Latinos. Of course, there are some decent, unbiased Republicans, but they are in short supply. There are more Democrats who have a liberal bent. Remember how your children tried to play one parent against the other? This is the simple childhood technique that we must use. Pitting one against the other would be a shock to their system because that is a technique they use to divide and conquer. The Republican elite care no more about the average white person than they do you; but, they have managed successfully to put a wedge between poor people to build up white resentment and hatred toward Black people whom they feel take their neighborhoods, their jobs and their women. Sex plays a part in this scenario. They amplify the myth of the Black stud out to get their women; therefore, they must keep their women away from Black men. One has to understand the root and underlying reasons for this perpetual racism that has infected this country since slavery. One little known fact is that many white people are insecure. One would think that because they own everything and control everything, they would be secure – not true. Only the rich and powerful feel secure because they can pay for their security by removing themselves far away from the poor, both Black and white, jetting around to their various estates, exploiting the financial and all other systems and repressing the goals and ambitions of the nations’ majority. Look at what is going on in Washington. It is not a coincidence that while thousands of Black youth are sitting in jail, often for minor offenses, the Wall Street Fat Cats continue to rip us off. They make the rules and they make them to their advantage. We must become part of the group that makes the rules whether it is in our towns, villages, counties, cities, states and at the federal level. see PROACTIVE page 5 ATTORNEY AT LAW MARILEE JONES-COFIELD Personal Injury Cases Auto Accidents & Slip and Fall Workers’ Compensation Probate cases Notary Services (562) 426-3722 Marilee Jones-Cofield, Esq. 2425 Atlantic Ave Long Beach CA, 90806 Got a legal or public notice to publish? C. - President Obama Lays Out Immigration Plan: "Declaring that America’s immigration system is broken, President Obama on Tuesday called for a process to allow millions of illegal immigrants in the country to 'earn their way to citizenship,' and he warned that he would send his own bill to Congress if lawmakers deadlock on a new Senate proposal. In his first trip outside Washington since his inauguration last week, Obama added to momentum on Capitol Hill in favor of an overhaul of the nation’s immigration President Obama laws, setting forth the principles for a top second-term priority — and perhaps the one most likely to be accomplished." The Biggest Differences With the Senate Deal: T"here were hints in Mr. Obama’s speech of potential fault lines in the debate. He declared, for example, that there must be a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants 'from the outset.' That would seem at odds with the assertion by some senators that citizenship must be tied to tighter border security. Although Mr. Obama did not say it in his speech, the White House is also proposing that the United States treat same-sex couples the same as other families, meaning that people would be able to use their relationship as a basis to obtain a visa." The delegation was led by Cllr Nomvuzo Shabalala, the Deputy Mayor and Chairperson of Economic Development and Planning Committee for Ethekwini Municipality in Durban, South Africa. Durban, located on the eastern coast, is the 3rd largest city in South Africa after Johannesburg and Capetown, has a population of nearly 3.5 million people and is the home of the busiest container port in Africa. The main purpose of this trip for the delegation was to sign a sister city agreement with Los Angeles. The ceremony took place on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at the rotunda in City Hall. Other members of the delegation included Mr. MP Duze, Ms. Zanele Mbokazi, Ms. Thato Tsautse, and Ms. Nombuso Ndumo. A county-by-county map of which Super Bowl team has the most "likes". Facebook's data science team dived into the social network's data on NFL fandom and came back with some revealing findings. For one thing, pro football fans are shameless bandwagon-hoppers, especially during the playoffs. And it seems the bandwagon everyone's hopping on right now is the one that belongs to the San Francisco 49ers. In a post that draws on what he calls "one of the most comprehensive samples of sports fanship ever collected," Facebook data-science intern Sean Taylor analyzed patterns in the numbers of people who "like" the team pages of various NFL organizations, including the Super Bowl-bound 49ers and Baltimore Ravens. In all, some 35 million U.S.-based Facebook users—more than one in 10 Americans—have declared their support for at least one team. How does a given team accrue these "likes?" By winning, of course. But especially by winning in the playoffs. Facebook data show that a playoff win results in more than twice as many new "likes" as a playoff loss, and nearly five times as many as a regular-season win. In other words, an awful lot of Facebook users make their fandom official only once their team is in the national limelight. Facebook’s data also reveal which team commands the most fans in each county across the country (or, at any rate, the most fans eager to declare their allegiances on a social network). The first map shows the breakdown for all 32 NFL squads. The findings are mostly predictable—Tennesseans support their Titans, San Diegans back the Chargers—but there are some fascinating intricacies and anomalies. SAVE DATE! Feb. 23, 2013 “State of Black Long Beach Forum” “State of Black Long Beach Forum” Free. Be There! This New Year, Resolve to Get Off Your Butt By Dick Resch What was your New Year's resolution? If you're like most Americans, you probably promised to lose weight, quit smoking or live a healthier lifestyle. Unfortunately, your odds of failing are high. Just 8 percent of those who make New Year's resolutions actually succeed. Studies show that it's almost impossible to alter your daily routine by sheer force of will. So what can you do if you're part of the 92 percent of people without Herculean willpower? How can you successfully make a healthy lifestyle change in 2013? The answer might surprise you. And it's to start with a micro-adjustment in your existing routine -- one that's guaranteed to improve your health and costs nothing. And one you can be doing right now. It's called standing. That's right -- standing. And it's something we should all do more of this year. Believe it or not, sitting is hazardous to our health. Yet many Americans sit for the bulk of the day -- whether at work, in a car or on the couch watching a movie or a ballgame. Not only does sitting slow our metabolism, it's been linked to a higher incidence of everything from heart attacks and diabetes to kidney disease and cancer. Over time, just two hours of sitting per day can drop good cholesterol by 20 percent and reduce blood flow. There's a direct link between the rise of sedentary jobs -- up 83 percent since 1950 -- and the increase in obesity in America. More than a third of adults are now classified as obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Our newfound idleness is actually shaving years off our lives. A recent study found that men who spent more than 10 hours a week in a car had an astonishing 82 percent greater chance of dying from cardiovascular disease. And according to an American Cancer Society, women who sit for more than six hours a day are 37 percent more likely to die than their counterparts who sit for less than three hours a day. If people sat less than three hours a day, U.S. life expectancy would increase by two years. Indeed, we might call sitting the new smoking. According to Martha Grogan, a cardiologist at the Mayo Clinic, the risk of heart attack for people who sit most of the day is the same as for smokers. The standard prescription for obesity -- more exercise -- may not help, as even regular gym-goers aren't immune to the negative health effects of sitting. Genevieve Healy, a research fellow at the Cancer Prevention Research Centre of the University of Queensland in Australia, has calculated that a 30-minute session at the gym isn't enough to undo the damage of sitting down for a full workday. Fortunately, the fix for sitting too much is easy -- simply stand up. It starts with being mindful of how much we sit -- and looking for opportunities to stand during our daily routines. This could mean staying on our feet while enjoying morning coffee, reading the newspaper, or talking on the phone. In places where sitting is necessary -- such as the office -- keep an eye on the clock, and be sure to stand up and walk around at regular intervals. Bosses can implement standing meetings. Not only are such on-yourfeet conclaves healthier for all involved -- they're often shorter, too. Companies might consider offering height-adjustable sit/stand desks for interested employees. If such desks were good enough for Leonardo da Vinci, Donald Rumsfeld and Winston Churchill, they're good enough for Americans in 2013. And they're healthier, too. A 200-pound man can burn nearly 30 percent more calories by standing rather than sitting during a normal workday. Indeed, the CDC found that workers who had access to standing workstations experienced dramatic decreases in neck and back pain and an improved mood. High-top tables in the company cafeteria can also transform a formerly sedentary activity -- lunch -- into a healthy one. They can also encourage more socializing among employees than the conventional lunch table. Those discouraged by the failure of previous New Year's resolutions should resist the urge to sit this year out. Standing up is a simple way to live healthier in 2013. All we need to do is get off our butts. Yet, there’s been very little celebrating in this country of ours so famous for making the most out of success in international competition. An Olympic Bronze in synchronized swimming would have garnered more praise. According to the 2011 PIRLS (Progress in International Reading Literacy Study), the only countries with better 4th Grade reading levels are Russia, Finland, and Singapore. Hong Kong was also listed as outperforming us, but it’s not a country. This is a remarkable success for U.S. public education, especially when you take into account that we have 48 million public school students of which at least 10% are English Language Learners – that’s about five million students – almost equivalent to the total population of Finland. In addition, U.S. schools and teachers have to deal with disproportionate levels of poverty, and research has proven unequivocally that poverty is the most important determining factor in educational outcomes. According to census statistics, more than 16 million American kids (nearly 25%) live in poverty, whereas Finland’s childhood poverty rate is about 5%. There are no official statistics out of Singapore but the wealthy city-state offers a relatively comprehensive social safety net for locals, borne out by the fact that 80% of Singaporeans live in public housing, the purchasing of which is subsidized, so 90% own their own homes. Reliable Russian poverty statistics are elusive but anecdotal evidence suggests that poverty levels may be high but education is prioritized. Fourth may not be a medal spot but surely some good news about the educational achievements of our “failing” public schools warrants at least a pat on the back of our oft-maligned teachers. Of course, the value of these international comparisons based upon standardized tests is questionable. However, when U.S. students perform poorly on such comparisons, we never hear the end of it. What happened to South Korea which the President recently hailed as having an exemplary education system? Indeed, the nation’s whole attitude to schools and teachers is based upon the presumption that our schools are overfunded and underperforming compared to their overseas counterparts. A whole industry is based upon this presumption – Waiting for Superman’s Michelle Rhee has pledged to raise $1 billion through her lobbying organization, StudentsFirst, to overhaul the public education system according to her reform tastes. Raising that kind of cash will be tough enough without having to deal with the adverse publicity that U.S. educational success might create. Contrary to accepted wisdom, and many reports, we’re not spending relatively more than other countries to get these results. According to a new report the Economist Intelligence Unit, the U.S. spends less than 22% of its GDP on education compared to Finland’s 30% and the UK’s 26%. Figures are unavailable for Russia or Singapore but even Hong Kong clocks in at 23.5%. It is vital for us to recognize the successes as well as the failures of our schools. Too many people are being misled by biased reports about the condition of our educational system. In turn, this is leading to bad decisions and the misuse of public funds to fix things that ain’t broke. Of course, we should always be striving to improve our schools but we must also recognize what does work and give credit where credit’s due. Page 4 - January 31 - February 6, 2013• Long Beach Times Newspaper Latino gang members accused of terrorizing Compton black family From Crime Staff Reports COMPTON, CA - Two Latino gang members have been arrested on suspicion of hate crimes after allegedly waging a campaign to force a black family to move from Compton, Los Angeles County sheriff's officials said. The suspects allegedly beat a family member with metal pipes and gathered gang members in front of the family's house to threaten them, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Jeffrey Aguilar, 19, of Compton, and Efren Marquez, 21, a resident of Riverside, were arrested Thursday. Jeffrey Aguilar, 19, Compton, and Efren Marquez, 21, Riverside Los Angeles County Sheriff’s detectives said the two also rode by the family’s house repeatedly yelling insults and threats and insisting that they move. The confrontations allegedly began on Dec. 31, the day the family moved into a house on 153rd Street in Compton. That day, one member of the family, walking on the street, was confronted by four Latino gang members who drove up in a black SUV, according to a sheriff’s report. They told the man that they were gang members and that his family was not allowed to live in their area because they were black, the report said. They shouted racial insults and violent threats until the man ran for home, according to the report. He was chased by the gang members, who then climbed from the SUV and began beating him with metal pipes, according to the report. Marquez allegedly pointed a gun at the man, while Aguilar allegedly beat the victim with a pipe, the sheriff's report said. The gang members drove off, but returned to the family’s home accompanied by 15 to 20 more gang members who swore at the family, used racial insults and told them that blacks were not allowed in the neighborhood, authorities said. One gang member allegedly threw a beer bottle through the family’s front living room window. Sheriff’s detectives have searched 11 locations and say an investigation into the attacks is continuing. During one search of a Compton residence Thursday, they arrested a juvenile gang member, who fought with a deputy and attempted to remove the deputy's pistol. Compton, with a population of about 97,000, was predominately black for many years. It has gone through enormous demographic change, and is now 65% Latino, according to the 2010 U.S. Census. But that didn't stop a large throng of students and basketball fans from turning out on a rainy night to see the Compton Tarbabes play the Millikan Rams. Compton is ranked number two in the Moore League basketball standings. Their only Wilfred Phillips, Jr. loss came at home earlier in the conference season to the highflying Long Beach Poly Jackrabbits, who are the number one team in the league. The Millikan Rams has a record of 5-2 and are ranked third. Head coach Chris Francis, has motivated his players to move this high in the conference rankings. During the first quarter the Tarbabes started out cold. Both teams like to run the ball and it was like a duel, track meet to see who will win the match. The Rams showed a tough defense each time the Tarbabes came down the court. The Rams also controlled the glass on both ends. But towards the end of the quarter the Tarbabes worked their way back with their run and gun offense. The second quarter was quite like the first with plenty of running plays, strong defensive action, and spectacular outside shooting that delighted the crowd. 6’6 Jr. Deshawn Hill, of Compton and Brian Chambers, of the Rams, had the hot hands on their teams as the score stayed close right up to the end of the half. The second half showed both teams running up and down the court at blazing speeds, but there were numerous turnovers, blocked shots and easy lay-ups missed. The game was turning out to be like a Boston Celtic, Miami Heat, basketball battle, which kept the fans on edge as time was winding down. Both coaches made several key substitutions by bringing in rested players off the bench. The score separation was no more than three points for each team. It wasn't until there was 2:30 remaining on the clock in the fourth quarter when Compton went on a run scoring consecutive baskets with steals and three-point shots to win. Final Score: Compton Tarbabes 61-Millikan Rams 58. After the game I asked Isaiah Bailey, of the Tarbabes what was it like out on the court. He described it in one word, “It was fast.” Millikan head coach Chris Francis, says that he takes his hat off to Compton. They're well coached and a highly motivated team. Compton's next game will be on Monday evening Jan. 28, at Long Beach Poly High School against the undefeated Jackrabbits. Tip-off will be at 6:30 PM. As the CIF playoffs looms near, you can be assured that the top three teams will be representing the Moore League in the playoffs. “Giving my wife the $50 Love Your Heart Check-Up was the best gift I could have given her. I am Dr, Martin Luther King, Jr. Remember me? I lived in times of transitional peace through non-violent means. However, it appears that the times that you are living in now, have proven to be very different and more difficult times than when I was there with you. So I have awaken to discover that some of you have slipped back and regressed into a dismal state that leaves me in a quandary of disbelief. When I left you, I left with the hopes that progress was inevitable and that the report that I would receive here would be one of encouragement, excitement, and immeasurable ecstasy. However, I am reviewing the latest fashions, trends, APB’s, eblasts, and OMG Insider, and discovering that my dream is still not a reality and may have even progressed into what looks more like a nightmare than a reality; IJS. So I am choosing to reflect back upon the “ I Have A Dream” speech that I wrote to you, which appears to keep a place in your programs that you have each January in my honor, and to convey to you what some of my concerns are. I will not remind you of all that I told you because it appears that you have either failed to remember or selectively chose to forget the importance of it. So let me first recap for your memory and point to some of the areas that I mentioned in my speech. I first spoke about the Emancipation Proclamation that was signed Five score years ago and what it was intended to do about the flames of withering injustice that was suppose to last for a lifetime for all of us, not just Negro slaves. But I have awakened to find out that some of its momentous decree was never initiated and some still swallow in injustices, and some still have a problem with it after all of these years. The doors of opportunity have been opened to all of God’s children as I mentioned, but the devastation appears gloomy because of what some have and have not done as they were given a door to walk through; IJS. And should I remind my people, that in the process of gaining our rightful place, that we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds? I know that Rodney King was with you for awhile and has now left you, but he was on to something when he pricked our conscious with that faithful saying and question that lived for a long time in us: Can We Just All Get Along? It appears though that you have slipped into an insurmountable tumultuous coma that has left you without feelings of self worth, which gives the appearance of the absence of caring for each other which was always at the foundation of every trial, movement, campaign, and just plain ole human suffering. So let me just ask you America, have you chosen to satisfy your present day thirst for freedom, peace, tranquility, or equality, by convoluting it with insatiable desires to be happy by any means necessary, choosing not to drink from the cup of bitterness and hatred but turning to self-mutilation with the drugs, alcohol, gangs and violence? I must question your motives America. I have been awaken only to see that you now seek to be lavished with the theocracy of the rich and famous, instead of the democracy for all, by all. Should I take you back to that part of my speech where I encouraged you to rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force. Your hearts must still guide your souls, and you must not give in to the pressure of the polls. So please do not excuse the behaviors of some of your brothers and sisters because of the weight of their pocketbooks vs the weight of their crimes. Oh yes, I know that I’ve been gone from you for a long time now, and that it is a new day in the lives of the politicians and the evils that torment and punish them into their caves and dens of iniquities. But you must understand America, that not only Negroes have voting rights, everybody can vote now. I also hear that our Hispanic, Asian, and Third world countries brothers and sisters have all made an unexpected arrival and their visibility economically is formidable. In fact, I am told that soon our Hispanic family status will no longer be in This Valentine’s Day, Don’t Get Carried Away – Tie Your Metallic Balloons Down PROACTIVE from front page Run for office yourself if you have the ability and the stamina. Therefore, take heed and beware in all areas. And oh, by the way my fellow politicians, just a word to you as well: what you do privately yields public scrutiny now, IJS! Now, you must understand that I am speaking from an inward force that has guided my being, from the point of my life to the point of my death. So my internal cues are still with me about you America and your being. Even though I have been awaken to the perils of your present state, I am still shaken by the news that infiltrates your homes daily that seemingly have no end to the violence, injustices, demoralizing, bewilderment, trickery, scams, schemes, and devisiveness surrounding our once secured institutions of family, church, schools, and communities. America, what has happened to the fibers of the blood, sweat, and tears that dared not shake our beliefs, commitments, and vows that we not only thought about but lived out? Remember, I was once with you. I witnessed what we believed. Even when we were wrong, we were wrong with a sense that we agreed to disagree. I understand now that you do more violating each other than protecting each other. You do less talking and more acting out. Family has become separate instead of being united. I understand that there are more Foster Homes than parents at home. I had an opportunity to look at the latest hip-hop tracks and you now have DVD’s, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Skype and more that allows your young people to do their own thing without parental consent and I have to ask, what happened America? I noticed parents that since you started believing that you wanted more for your children than you had, that your youth have seemingly lost respect for you and have even resorted to violent tendencies in their music; that their music even causes rivalry that has erupted into competition that leads to death; I even heard about the deaths of Tupac and Bigge Small and the Rappers chaos; that music no longer serves as mere pleasure anymore . You must know that I hear everything up here where I am. And then I was torn by the fact that the AMA reported more unnecessary and increased medical mistakes than ever in the history of medicine. That you have more Black boys and men in prison than you have graduating from school. That more homes are being foreclosed on than could ever be imagined in the history of America; that businesses are closing in record numbers; that our churches are no longer safe houses anymore; that Chicago seems to now becoming the murder capital of the states; that schools, theaters, and grocery stores have now become slaughter houses; that parents have turned on their children and they are being victimized without remorse; that guns have replaced love; that lies have replaced truth; that our leaders have lost their integrity to lead and have become bewitched. America, there is so much more that I have received reports about. But I am about to wake up. But before I awake from this nightmare, let me also tell you that I have even gotten the report that my people have progressed to experience the shock of their lifetime; You have a Negro, Black, African American, or some have called him, Mixed, President! Wow America, you have taken a part of my dream and made it a reality. So I thank you, and I’m celebrating in the best way that I can up here! But! The question is are you still judging by the color of one’s skin or are you a nation that has progressed to what I dreamed would one day become a reality, the content of their character! And as I leave you and when I awake from this dream to only realize that this is my nightmare America, I still believe that the faith that I have will allow me, even up here, to sing with a new meaning, “ My country tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. Land where my fathers died, land of the pilgrim’s pride, from every mountainside, let freedom ring”! Publish: Long Beach Times Newspaper/LBT - ROSEMEAD, Calif., Jan. 29, 2013 — This Valentine’s Day, think of your loved ones with chocolates, flowers and maybe some jewelry. And if your gift of choice is a Mylar, or metallic balloon, make sure to tie it down. That’s because helium-filled metallic balloons, often given as gifts during this special day, can float into power lines and cause outages that could last from a few minutes to hours at a time. Southern California Edison (SCE) asks that customers keep the balloons inside or keep them tightly secured to a weight heavy enough to prevent them from drifting away. “Southern California Edison wants customers to enjoy their Valentine’s Day, but would like them to keep in mind that metallic balloons can easily float away into power lines causing short-circuits and outages,” said Bill Messner, SCE’s manager, Corporate Health and Safety. “We don’t want avoidable outages to ruin this special day.” In the last several years, SCE has experienced close to 2,000 power outages caused by balloons. In 2012, there were 583 balloon-related outages, with a 110 percent increase in outages in February compared to January. The number of outages in 2012 was the highest since 2007. SCE recommends some simple safety tips for handling metallic balloons: Keep metallic balloons indoors, and never release them outside. Helium-filled metallic balloons can drift and come in contact with high-voltage lines and cause power outages, so be sure to attach a weight heavy enough to prevent them from floating away. Never attach streamers to any balloon — latex or metallic. If you buy and fill your own balloons with helium, be sure to tie them securely to a weight heavy enough to prevent them from drifting away. Do not attempt to retrieve a balloon or any foreign object tangled in power lines. Instead, call SCE at 800-6111911 and report the problem. February is also a good time to jump start a savings plan for the year as February 25th kicks off America Saves week, a national campaign sponsored by more than 1,000 nonprofit, government and corporate organizations. Their goal is to encourage people from all income levels to take savings to heart and build personal wealth. Like a healthy relationship, saving money takes commitment. Here are just a few reasons to fall in love with saving. Security Accidents and emergencies can happen. Cars break down. Pipes burst. We may face unexpected medical bills. Having an emergency Curtis Flannigan fund saved for situations like these can help make getting through them a little easier. Most financial experts recommend having six to nine months' income saved for emergencies, but even $500 (or roughly $10 saved each week for a year) could help you during an unexpected financial emergency. “Having a “rainy day” fund is always smart,” says Pierre Habis, Union Bank senior executive vice president and head of Community Banking. “We advise customers to make saving a priority all year long by paying yourself first – set up an automatic savings plan and stick to it.” Freedom When you are not burdened by debt, you have financial freedom – freedom to choose a home, to travel and even where or how many hours to work. To achieve financial freedom, you must save more than you spend. As you pay down your debt you have more available cash to put toward savings and other goals. Opportunities Having money in the bank can be advantageous when opportunity knocks. There may be times when a sound investment or similar opportunity comes your way, or perhaps the home of your dreams is listed on the market. Often these opportunities arise quickly, and those who have money saved are in a financial situation to seriously consider these options. Put Your Savings to Work By putting your savings into an interest-bearing account, you tap into the power of compound interest -- interest earned not only on your original investment, but also on its accrued earnings. Regular investments into savings and investment accounts early on can help lead to future wealth. Sense of Accomplishment Establishing and reaching a savings goal can result in a sense of accomplishment. Whether you are saving for a car, an education or new home, setting a goal and reaching it can be a powerful reminder of what you are capable of when you make a plan and stick to it. Peace of Mind Eliminating financial burdens often helps to reduce stress and can offer peace of mind for many. Money problems can be a major source of tension in relationships, and financial advisors agree that having a sound budget and savings plan can help ease fights over money. It’s also prudent to put aside adequate funds for retirement or your child’s college education to help alleviate anxiety about the future. Take savings to heart and get in the habit of paying yourself first – hopefully you’ll fall in love with saving and make it a lifelong commitment. Sugarfoot Bonner of the Ohio Players Dies at the age of 69 From Staff Reports Leroy “Sugarfoot” Bonner has died, according to his friends and family. Bonner was a legend in funk and will be missed by those who remember the great music created during the 1970s. “He was a great person with a lot of wisdom not just in music, but in life,” said Keith Harrison of the bands FAZE-O and the Dazz Band. Bonner was from Dayton, Ohio and died after battling cancer. His career lasted for 56 years and he was coming upon his 70th birthday at the time of his death. “While his family, friends, colleagues, and fans mourn his passing they celebrate fondly his memory, music and legacy,” said a posting on the family announcement page. Bonner was the lead guitarist for the Ohio Players since 1971. Some are saying that he will be remembered for his kindness. “He was one of the nicest people I have ever met,” said Ohio musician Ronald Frost. Frost’s father was a member of the original Ohio Players, Ronald Nooks. “He was a good friend of my dad’s,” Frost said. The Ohio Players are known for quite a few hit songs in Funk, including “Fire,” “Skin Tight” and “Love Rollercoaster.”Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced. Leroy “Sugerfoot” Bonner Embracing Change By Otis Sanders I’m a professional photographer. Creating photographic imagery is my passion; it's been that way since the beginning, (the age of 12) and more so after I finished Art School having developed my own style of Black and White Portraiture. In order to stay viable and current with digital technology; in 2005 I purchased my very first digital camera. The decision to go digital was the first real admission to myself that the world of photography, in my opinion had gone through the most significant change since color film, and I was forced to deal with it. No longer would I go into the darkroom to process and print Black and White film, make prints or send my color negative and transparency film to the lab. That world was gone for me. As I thought later, this transition was right on time because I no longer had 8 to 16 hours to spend in the darkroom, as I now had a family that needed my time also. As I thought about the change the world of photography had gone through I contemplated my continued involvement in the Otis Sanders profession. I knew that in order to stay relevant I'd have to reinvent myself. The thought of a remake of my career and professional life was a major turning point! Now, the question was, "With this knowledge, how was I going to accomplish this reinvention?" My thoughts and ideas in regards to photography had changed over the years. The desire to work on projects that were personally satisfying became an increasingly important consideration as it related to my sense of accomplishment, success and fulfillment in relation to photography. As I thought about what would keep me excited about being a photographer I couldn't get away from the fact that I've always wanted to write and publish a book. Although I had made a significant attempt to write a book on my bicycle trip through West Africa years earlier, it crashed and burned leaving me no closer to fulfilling a dream. As I decided to embrace the change that presented itself within technology, myself and career; I also made up my mind that I was going to reinvent myself and my approach to photography by becoming a published author. I didn't realize that I had been preparing myself for this change for quite sometime because in 1999 I chose to forgo exhibiting my photography in galleries and museums for a presence on the internet in order to gain the eyes of a world wide audience. I've never considered myself a writer, but in order to explain myself and my imagery to viewers all over the world; I had to write. My grasp of the art and technique of writing is not at the level of a Langston Hughes, James Baldwin, or Ralph Ellison, but we all have to start from where we are. When I made the decision to become a published author I had enough experience with the written word to make a significant attempt and the desire was strong enough to keep me moving forward. Three years later, after finding 50 married couples, interviewing each couple and writing a 1 page interview, with an accompanying current full page photograph, and traveling to 4 different states; I self published my first table top photo book titled: "Always & Forever, Love" subtitled: Success Stories of Marriages 20+ Years Strong. I successfully completed a long standing dream of becoming a published author, by deciding what I wanted to accomplish, starting from where I was with what I had, embracing digital technology and learning the process, all the while seeing the finished book in my hands! I'm well on my way to reinventing myself, with a new found excitement for photography, digital photography, digital technology, writing, printed books and e-books! I’m enbracing change! Otis G.
