A Personal
Experience
I
t's difficult to fi nd the words to describe the
magnificence of the Pacific Coast. The vastness of the
ocean, its constant rhythm and the awesome power of its
crashing waves have a therapeutic and humbling effect on
the soul.
A different experience awaits each year, each season, each
day, and often, each moment. Every wave reshapes the
sandy beachscape and the frequent winds perpetually resculpt the dunes. The rocky shoreline displays its evolving
character on more of a monumental scale. Some of the
world's largest lava flows created the jagged shoreline
millions of years ago and, every minute since then, the
ocean has carved it into the capes, headlands and stunning
rock-strewn shoreline you will discover today.
Then, there's the weather. Yes, it can be wet, but along
the Pacific Coast, weather meets the shore with theatrical
effect like no other place. Sometimes, there are endless blue,
cloudless skies; but the coastal climate also unveils endless
surprises. A blanket of fog can linger between headlands
or sift through the rainforest. Billowing cloud formations
can decorate the skies and turn into an electric exhibition
of light and color as the day begins and ends. The moist
maritime layer can linger on the horizon and light up the
entire scene with a warm glow.
The Pacific Coast is a living landscape with the constantly
churning ocean making each moment a different
mesmerizing scene. These waters, rainforests and rocky
shores are also vibrant ecosystems that are the stage for
remarkable displays of nature. Bright sea stars cling to
intertidal rocks. Bald Eagles make silent fly-overs. Elk
emerge from the forest and graze in the meadows. In Spring,
wildflowers and shrubs bloom throughout woodlands, bluffs
and beaches. Nesting seabirds can
cover the entire surface of near-shore
rocks and sea lions bellow from rocky
haul outs. Suddenly, a 35-ton whale
spouts offshore. Like no other place,
the Pacific Coast offers a new, personal
experience with each visit.

Question:
We are planning
to see as many Oregon lighthouses
as possible. Do you have any ideas
or suggestions that might help us?
How many will I be able to get good
pictures of them from the mainland?
232 N. Spruce • Cannon Beach, Oregon • 503.436.8772

Gary Hayes
Answer: You can photograph
all of Oregon’s lighthouses from the
mainland, though there are a few where
a longer lens will be required, such as the
Tillamook Rock Lighthouse that is located
about a mile offshore. Having lenses that
offer focal points from at least 28-200mm
is best. Some of these lighthouses are
open to the public or offer tours, but
check on hours before you go. Here are a
few tips for photographing lighthouses as
you tour north to south:
Tillamook Rock Lighthouse: Your best
location for shooting this lighthouse is
Ecola State Park near Cannon Beach. I
suggest at least a 200mm lens for this
lighthouse.
Cape Meares Lighthouse: You can
walk right up to this short lighthouse in
a commanding position. Best shots are
from the short trail that leads from the
parking area.
Yaquina Head Lighthouse: You
can drive close to this lighthouse and
photograph it from many angles within the
Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area:
from the grounds, from the intertidal area
(at low tide) accessed by a stairway at the
parking area, or from trails that climb the
headland. You can also photograph the
lighthouse from beaches to the north or
south with a longer lens.
Yaquina Bay Lighthouse: Best
photographed from the grounds of
Yaquina Bay State Recreation Site at the
north end of the Yaquina Bay Bridge.
Heceta Head Lighthouse: There are
many great viewpoints to capture this
recently restored lighthouse: A short
walk leads to the base of the lighthouse
in Heceta Lighthouse State Park and a
trail continues above for views looking
downward at the light. There are also
viewpoints to the south along the highway
that are great, especially with longer
lenses.
Umpqua River Lighthouse: This
light is surrounded by chain link fence
within a Coast Guard housing area, so
photography is challenging. Look into the
small group tours that are offered MayOctober.
Cape Arago Lighthouse: Also located
within a fenced Coast Guard area and can
only be photographed from a distance.
There are some good viewpoints just
south of Sunset Bay State Park. A longer
lens is best.
Coquille River Lighthouse: You can
get right up to this light in Bullards Beach
State Park. It can also be photographed
to the south from Bandon’s riverfront or
the south jetty of the Coquille River.
Cape Blanco Lighthouse: Offers great
access and viewpoints from the grounds,
from a distance as you approach and
from trails to beaches in the area.

Ten
Great
Oregon
Coast
Hikes
The Pacific Northwest coast offers seemingly limitless
opportunities for the passionate hiker. The majestic
Oregon coast is a hiker’s paradise. With some of the most
striking forest-meets-the-sea landscapes in the world,
you simply can’t be disappointed when you venture out
for a coastal trek. Here are ten of our favorite Oregon
coast hikes, listed from north to south. by Jenna Boyle
Tillamook Head Trail
Tillamook Head is the headland situated
between Seaside and Cannon Beach.
This moderately difficult trail connects
the two towns and can be begun from
either location, but the preferred trailhead
is located at Indian Beach in Ecola
State Park (Day Use $5) at the north
end of Cannon Beach. Walk through
healthy rainforest of Western Hemlock,
Sitka Spruce and Western Red Cedar
as you enjoy the symphony provided
by woodland birds. Following a steep
1.2-mile trail you’ll discover numerous
stop-you-in-your-tracks views before
arriving at a hiker’s camp and the
Tillamook Rock Lighthouse viewpoint. The
trail continues on an additional four miles
up and over the headland, concluding at
the south end of Seaside.
Cape Falcon
Cape Falcon is the north promontory
of Oswald West State Park, 10 miles
south of Cannon Beach. This relatively
easy, 2.5-mile hike through rich, lichenencrusted forest presents several
magnificent views of Short Sands beach
and the Pacific coastline. Old-growth
trees and mammoth snags tower above
while Huckleberry and Swordfern blanket
the earth. Winding through a labyrinth
of Salal, you’ll arrive at a spectacular
240-foot perch atop the cape. Gulls and
cormorants soar below, and whales
(hopefully!) can be spotted offshore. The
trailhead is found at the northernmost
parking area of Oswald West State Park.
Cape Lookout
Cape Lookout is the central headland of
the Three Capes Scenic Route. This easyto-moderate trail twists 2.4 miles through
lush coastal forest and along the ominous
rock cliffs of the cape. Woodpeckers,
chickadees, Common Murres and ground
squirrels abound, while Bald Eagles
and Peregrine Falcon make cameo
appearances. The cape’s end is complete
with a bench for resting as you enjoy the
payoff of an expansive panorama. The
trailhead is located 10 miles southwest of
Tillamook, 2.7 miles down Cape Lookout
Road.
Coast Explorer | Spring 2014 9
Coastlines
Cascade Head
This moderately challenging, four-mile
(round trip) trek includes sweeping coastal
views and a walk through an exceptionally
rare headland meadow ecosystem
protected by the Nature Conservancy.
This is a renowned breeding area for the
endangered Oregon Silverspot butterfly;
due to the delicate ecosystem, flower
picking, hunting, camping, fires, bicycles,
and dogs are prohibited. To find the
trailhead, follow Highway 101 four miles
north of Lincoln City and turn left on
Three Rocks Road. Drive 2.2 miles and
turn left into the parking lot at the Savage
boat ramp.
St. Perpetua Trail #1306
Views from the trail through Shore Acres State Park on Cape Arago
This difficult, three-mile trail ascends
to the top of Cape Perpetua through
coastal old-growth forest and seasonal
wildflowers, offering sweeping views of
the Pacific along the way. Switchbacks
climb the magnificent 800-ft-tall bluff,
overlooking the ocean with 70 miles of
coastline in view on a clear day. Find the
trailhead at the Cape Perpetua Day Use
Area, just two miles south of Yachats;
several other trails are accessible
here and offer a total of 27 miles of
interconnected paths through the Cape
Perpetua Scenic Area.
Heceta Head to Carl G.
Washburne State Park
The Heceta Head Lighthouse was
originally lit in 1894 has been continuously
illuminated ever since. It provides an
enchanting beginning for an arduous
hike that steeply climbs Heceta Head.
Enjoy a verdant coniferous forest while
taking in the vast ocean views including
offshore rocks that are part of the Oregon
Islands National Wildlife Refuge. Travel
over the promontory and drop down to
the secluded beach, ultimately connecting
with Carl G. Washburne State Park.
The trail is 4.3 miles roundtrip with the
trailhead located at the Heceta Head
Lighthouse State Scenic Viewpoint, 15
miles south of Yachats.
John Dellenback
Dunes Trail #1339
Cape Lookout State Park
10 coastexplorermagazine.com
This trail begins in a tall Sitka spruce
forest, passes the tranquil Threemile
Lake and culminates at a gorgeous,
open beach. The 2.7 miles (one way)
can feel significantly longer as each
step sinks into the sandy terrain, but
the landscape of the dunes provides a
worthwhile playground with seemingly
boundless vistas. Beach access is
restricted from March 15-September
15 to protect the threatened Western
Snowy Plover. Find the trailhead at the
Eel Creek Campground, 10 miles south of
Reedsport. A recreation pass is required.
Cape Arago
Cape Arago is a stunning headland that
juts into the Pacific ocean, providing
fantastic viewpoints for spotting migrating
whales as well as ships entering and
leaving Coos Bay. A moderate, fourmile portion of the Oregon Coast Trail
connects the headland to Shores Acres
State Park, where you can enjoy the
gorgeous botanical gardens and Sunset
Bay State Park. About halfway between
Cape Arago and Sunset Bay, the Simpson
Reef overlook offers a perfect vantage for
spying on noisy Harbor Seals, Elephant
Seals and Sea Lions on the rocks below.
The trailhead is located at the end of
Cape Arago Highway, 15 miles southwest
of Coos Bay; alternately, begin at
Sunset Bay State park and take the trail
southward to the cape
summit. One is 1.5 miles long, the other is
2 miles; both are steep but the trail is well
maintained. The mountain is blanketed by
a forest of old growth Douglas Fir, Sitka
Spruce, Oregon Myrtle and Western Red
Cedar and boasts 12 different varieties of
terrestrial ferns. The trailhead is located in
a small parking area off U.S. 101 opposite
Humbug State Park campground, six
miles south of port Orford.
Thomas Creek to
Whaleshead Beach
This moderate, 2.5-mile (one way) trail
traverses a rocky, island-dotted coastline
in the Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic
Corridor. It connects Whaleshead Beach
to Thomas Creek, which boasts the
tallest (345 ft!) bridge in Oregon. At about
the halfway mark you’ll find the Indian
Sands archaeological area which shows
evidence of human activity dating back
more than 10,000 years. (Digging is
prohibited here.) This area is lined with
enormous dunes that can provide a fun
side-trip to your hike. The trail is kid- and
dog-friendly, and restrooms and picnic
tables are available at Whaleshead Beach.
The trailhead is located about eight miles
north of Brookings on Highway 101 at the
Whaleshead Beach picnic area (not the
viewpoint), next to the parking lot.
Humbug Mountain
One of the Oregon coast’s tallest
headlands, Humbug Mountain
majestically towers 1,756 feet over the
ocean. Two trails run from Humbug State
Park campground to the mountain’s

Astoria’s
Adventures
in History
It was the terminus of the
Lewis and Clark expedition
and later Oregon's first boom
town, a hub for fur traders
and a port for fishermen.
Astoria and its Columbia
River surroundings offer a
treasure trail of history in
the region’s maritime capital.
Take a walk through history
by visiting these seven sites.
Fort Clatsop
Fort Clatsop is one of several sites that
make up the Lewis and Clark National
Historical Park. Explore a replica of
the original 1805 fort with a historic
interpreter, learn of the hardships of
surviving an unforgiving winter in this
coastal forest, and take in the visitor
center’s exhibits about Lewis and Clark’s
journey west. To plan your visit, go to
nps.gov/lewi/planyourvisit/fortclatsop.
htm.
Columbia River
Maritime Museum
The Columbia River Maritime Museum
has world-class exhibits that offer a walk
through Astoria’s role as a maritime hub.
Visitors learn about “the graveyard of the
Pacific” where thousands of shipwrecks
dot the treacherous mouth of the
Columbia, about the elite pilot team that
keeps shipping traffic safe, and about
Astoria’s historic salmon fishing and
canning industry. For more information,
visit crmm.org.
Fort Stevens State Park
Astoria’s historical attractions shine a
beacon on the events and characters
that shaped this important West Coast
seaport founded in 1811. By Allen Cox
12 coastexplorermagazine.com
Fort Stevens State Park is the home
of Civil War-era Fort Stevens. This
defense site—one of three that guarded
the mouth of the Columbia River from
confederate or British attack by sea—
was an active-duty military installation
until the end of WWII. Visitors can check
out more than three dozen sites on a
self-guided military history tour (pick
up a tour brochure at the park’s visitor
center). The oldest site is the original
1863 earthen fort from which a 120lb. cannonball might hit a target a mile
away. For visitor information, go to
oregonstateparks.org.
Peter Iredale Shipwreck
The Peter Iredale shipwreck near
Astoria is one of the most photographed
attractions on the beach. In 1906, this
four-masted cargo vessel was waiting
for a pilot ship escort into the Columbia
when stormy conditions forced her into
the breakers and beached her near Fort
Stevens. Today, the skeleton of the ship
offers testimony to the power of Nature
on the Northwest coast. Access the
shipwreck via Fort Stevens State Park.
Flavel House
Flavel House presents a history lesson
in Victorian lifestyle. Located on 8th and
Duane Street, this opulent Queen Anne
mansion, built in the mid-1880s as the
residence of Captain George Flavel, has
been meticulously restored and preserved
as a museum. In the carriage house
behind the mansion, watch a short history
video before touring the house. At the
mansion, walk through the rooms with
period furnishings and learn tidbits of
Astoria’s history along the way. For more
information, go to the Clatsop County
Historical Society’s website: cumtux.org.
Astoria Column
Astoria Column has stood tall since 1926
on the highest point in Astoria, 600 feet
above sea level. Styled after Trajan’s
Column in Rome, the monument rises
125 feet from base to crown. Spiraling
upward, a graphic timeline depicts
the history of the old West, beginning
with early explorers’ first contact with
indigenous peoples and ending with the
building of the railroad. Today, Astoria
Column is one of the coast’s most
fascinating monuments, and offers
unmatched views for those who tackle
the 164 spiral steps to the observation
deck. For more information, consult
astoriacolumn.org.
Clatsop County
Heritage Museum
The Clatsop County Heritage Museum
houses exhibits in a 1904 Neoclassical
building on 16th and Exchange Street.
Stop in to learn the details of Astoria’s
history through artifacts and interpretive
displays. Especially interesting is the
museum’s second floor exhibit, “Vice
and Virtue in Clatsop County: 1890 to
Prohibition,” about the city’s colorful
past as a sinner’s playground with its
infamous saloons and brothels. For more
information, go to cumtux.org.

Savor Cannon Beach
Features Six Unique
Wine Tasting Events
C
annon Beach, Oregon’s annual
celebration of Pacific Northwest
wine and regional cuisine will
include six unique wine tasting events and
many other related community activities
during the four-day Savor Cannon Beach
festival March 6-9. Approximately 40
Northwest wineries pour tastings at
shops, galleries, restaurants and hotels in
Cannon Beach during the wine walk on
Saturday of the festival.
Other festival wine tasting events during
Savor Cannon Beach focus on specific
themes. At the “Battle of the Blends,”
festival participants taste eight select
Northwest red and white wine blends,
then vote to choose the top wines. Do
you know your Cinsault (pronounced
san-soh)? In the Savor
Cannon Beach event by that
name, participants taste
some of the lesser-known
grape varietals grown in the
Pacific Northwest with wine
writer Andy Perdue, founder
of Wine Press Northwest
Magazine.
The event kicks off Thursday,
March 6 with the “Thursday
Night Throwdown” where
six different wine varietals,
one each from Oregon and
Washington, go head to head
in a battle to see what state
reigns supreme. Can you tell
a Cabernet from a Merlot?
Festival participants can also
test their palates in a blind
tasting event titled “What
Varietal Is It?” The event
wraps up with a Sunday
morning tasting of sparkling
wines paired with brunch
bites.
“Our wine tasting events
are designed to be both
educational and fun,” said
Gary Hayes, the festival
director and founder. “We
28 coastexplorermagazine.com
carefully select wines that showcase the
bounty of the various Pacific Northwest
wine regions and many of the wines
served are recent award winners or have
received critical acclaim. The intimate
size of our tasting events and our unique
format makes the festival popular with
serious wine enthusiasts,” said Hayes.
Most of the tasting events at Savor
Cannon Beach are limited to 100 tickets,
except for the wine walk that includes 500
participants.
Savor Cannon Beach is not like most wine
festivals that are commonly trade show
format. Without a single large venue in
Cannon Beach to host that type of event,
Savor Cannon Beach has become a more
community wide celebration. Cannon
Beach restaurants, shops, galleries and
hotels host their own special tastings
and other events during the festival. Free
or low cost tastings of chocolates, olive
oils, finishing salts and locally distilled
spirits are among the events hosted by
local businesses. Cannon Beach art
galleries present special events and some
feature wine and food related art. Cannon
Beach Treasure Company will host an
exhibit titled “Savor the Sea,” featuring
artifacts recovered from sunken and
buried treasure sites including a 215-yearold British East India Company rum
bottle that survived a shipwreck with its
contents still intact. Two were recovered
and one will be for sale.
A $119 Festival Pass offers admission to
all six wine tasting events and tickets for
individual events, including the Saturday
wine walk, are $30 tickets each. Tickets
for the events are available online at
savorcannonbeach.com.

BREAKFAST: La Maison Bakery and Cafe
Tucked away off the main thoroughfare, the Frenchinspired La Maison Bakery and Café doesn’t enjoy the
high traffic benefit of the obvious tourist go-to sites – and
it doesn’t need it. The fresh-baked food, the service
and charming cottage setting bring both tourists and
locals back time after time. Chef and owner Kate Brown
prides herself on considering them all family and serving
them meals made only from the best and freshest, and
always local when the season permits. Best known for
her breakfast Benedicts, Brown offers three choices of
Hollandaise classics. There’s the traditional with honey
cured hickory smoked ham; Eggs Sardou with artichoke
and bacon; or the Swedish Cured Salmon Benedict
with wild caught salmon. If Benedicts aren’t your style,
consider the crepes served or perhaps a French omelet.
And you won’t want to miss out on the orange juice –
freshly squeezed to order, no less. La Maison is just one
block east of Highway 101 in the heart of downtown.
You’ll know it when you see the green shingle-style
cottage with the paned windows and the welcome vibe.
LUNCH: Local Ocean Seafoods
Every seat here offers a premier view of the bayfront and
odds are good while you’re savoring your locally caught
seafood, you may just get a glimpse of the fishing vessel
that brought the catch home. Wildly popular since the
day Laura Anderson opened the restaurant eight years
ago, Local Ocean is renowned for its seafood, and
none more so than the crab dishes. “We don’t do clam
chowder,” says Anderson. “We tell people if you like
clam chowder you’ve got to try our roasted Dungeness
crab dish. It’s absolutely to die for.” You’ll also find on the
menu, tuna, ling cod, rockfish and salmon. For those who
just don’t do seafood, there’s even a burger made from
beef from a Willamette Valley rancher, and if you’re not
into meat or seafood, the chef will be happy to modify
many dishes to meet vegetarian needs.

DINNER: Saffron Salmon
Set at the end of a pier on the edge of the bayfront,
the newly remodeled Saffron Salmon ranks as one of
Newport’s finest dining experiences. Guests will find a
menu offering a wild salmon sandwich, seafood stew and
certified natural Angus beef steaks. But the hands-down
favorites are chef Michael Waliser’s delectable calamari
and the Dungeness crab and shrimp cakes so renowned,
they’ve been featured on the Cooking Channel’s “Hook,
Line & Dinner. In short, the kitchen philosophy, says Stacy
Waliser, is keep it simple. All of the desserts, sauces and
stocks are made in house – even the ketchup. “We like
ingredients to speak for themselves instead of muddling
favors,” she says. “Locally foraged chanterelles really
don’t need a lot when served in our risotto. The natural
favors are perfect.” This is a romantic, first-class place
for an evening meal, but don’t overlook it for lunch when
the daylight views are unsurpassable. Lunch or dinner,
expect a memorable meal in a romantic setting with topof-the-line service. - by Lori Tobias

New Brewery Opens in Astoria
Buoy Beer has opened its doors in Astoria.
Located in a former cannery where 8th
street meets the Columbia River, Buoy Beer
is the city’s newest brewery. Commanding
a magnificent river view, the restoration of
the 90-year-old building retains its original
character. Many features have been repurposed as design elements and décor
features for the new brewery. The bar and
restaurant area features an original fish
ladder used to haul fish from the first story
to processing on the second. A transparent
panel in the floor provides a peek at the
near century-old pilings, as well as the
occasional sea lion. The taproom features
a menu with a focus on fresh local seafood.
Menu items are chosen to specifically pair
with the brewery’s craft lagers and ales.

Pieces of Eight, the Coins
of Pirates, now at Cannon Beach
Treasure Company
Cannon Beach Treasure Company in
Cannon Beach is offering long-lost sunken
treasure, “Pieces of Eight” coins. Once
considered the world’s high value trade
currency, these crudely minted coins
from Mexico City were headed for Seville
in July 1715, when the Spanish galleon
was caught in a hurricane off Florida and
sank near present-day Vero Beach. These
are the coins of pirate lore,” says Robert
Lewis Knecht, historian, treasure hunter
and co-owner of Cannon Beach Treasure
Company. Knecht and his wife, April, have
restored these coins for collectors. “Some
folks like to collect the individual coins, and
others like to wear them as jewelry with an
amazing story,” says April, who designs
and creates most of the jewelry at their
store. Robert and April are always happy
to share the story of the “pieces of eight”
prized by pirates and kings, along with
other remarkable treasures that span 4,000
years of human history. Pieces of Eight
coins, more than 300 years old, are priced
starting at $250. Cannon Beach Treasure

Book Launch Party at
Beach Books in Seaside
Beach Books in Seaside hosts a book
launch event March 15. Local author
Melissa Eskue Ousley will launch the
second book in her young adult trilogy
series, “The Rabbit and the Raven.” This
young adult fantasy builds on the success
of the first book in “The Solas Beir Trilogy,
Sign of the Throne,” released in September
2013. “While the story is set in a magical
parallel realm, Oregonians may notice that
the forests of Cai Terenmare are inspired
by the forests along the Oregon coast,”
said Eskue Ousley. “They are full of wildlife,
but the creatures that lie in wait in Cai
Terenmare are not animals and have never
been human. But they will have you for
dinner, if you are not careful and clever.”
The launch kicks off the regional book tour
with a reading from the “The Rabbit and the
Raven” beginning at 2pm. The author will
donate one dollar to Clatsop Community
College scholarship fund for every book
sold during the first week of its release.

Two New Sculptures by David
Crawford at Bronze Coast Gallery
David Crawford has two new sculptures
at Bronze Coast Gallery in Cannon Beach.
Most of Crawford’s creations are limited
editions of nine. He creates pieces that
depict both man and beast struggling to
find their way in the world in spite of almostinsurmountable obstacles. “Cobbled Ox”
explores the strain we place on these
majestic beasts. Each taut, overextended
cable, breaking the animal in two, speaks
to the fact that while they are no longer
hauling carts, the ox is now dependent on
us for its continued survival. Bronze Coast

RiverSea Gallery in Astoria presents work
by Charles Schweigert in an exhibition titled
Flock, March 8 through June 8. Schweigert
pushes his fascination with feather,
wing and flight to new abstractions. He
combines graphite and transparent glazes
on various substrates including traditional
watercolor paper, pages from old Japanese
books and Terraskin, a paper made from
finely ground limestone. The exhibition
opens with a reception Saturday, March 8
during Astoria’s Second Saturday Artwalk.
April 10 through May 6, Jill McVarnish’s
new show, Everywhere that Mary Went,
opens with twisted tales from the nursery,
interpreted through oil on burlap. Her use
of intense color is reminiscent of the 17th
Century Dutch masters she studied as a
post-grad in the Gerrit Rietveld Acadamie
in Amsterdam. May 10 through June 3,
RiverSea will present a retrospective of
works by the late painter, Harry Bennett.
His expressionistic style depicts vibrant
women and contorted landscapes
rendered with energetic, pulsating brush
work. Most of the art will be available for
sale, however there will also be select
paintings from regional collections on
display. For more information call RiverSea

New Paintings & Prints
by Carol Thompson
Carol Thompson has added a series of
clam digging paintings to her oceaninspired catalogue. She starts with grey
oils loaded onto her filbert bristle brushes
and creates “Z” compositions, which
lead the eye in a zig-zag across the linen
canvas; or “C” compositions that transport
us on powerful, cascades down the face
of a monolith to the crashing surf as it
races towards the shore. “Clamdiggers

of paper cut assemblages to the gallery
May 10 to June 10. Hamblin’s inspiration
for imagery comes from her lifelong love
of life sciences. Her use of this imagery
and the delicate pattern revealed in
each paper cut is the focal point of her
work. Hamblin’s process goes beyond
traditional paper cut assemblage by
using paint and nails to create additional
patterns and textures that add an
industrial element. The juxtaposition
between paper and steel makes for a
unique and striking composition. Imogen

Features Outdoor Sculptures
& Garden Gates
Phil Beck’s gates are now swinging at
DragonFire Gallery in Cannon Beach. Beck
fashions gates, hanging wind catchers, and
sculptures for outdoor installations. Beck’s
inspiration rises from the scrap bins, where
a curve, spike or coil of metal catches his
eye and suggests a design. Everything
grows, organically, from that moment when
something discarded suggests a new
whole to his teeming brain. “Bubbles Gate”
is a study in bubble-whimsy, made of rusty
steel rings with a colored stainless steel
spinner in its center. “Goose Gate” has an
art-deco feel to its rusted, steel-punched
panel. His pieces feature moveable parts
that celebrate the kinetic energy inherent in
a gate. DragonFire Gallery, Cannon Beach

Nature’s Carpet
for the Garden
M
Using moss in coastal gardens takes
a cue from nature. By Ingrid Mueller
Mosses, the oldest living terrestrial plants on earth, carpet the nooks and crannies of the
Pacific Northwest. Its lush growth can be found in abundance in Oregon’s coastal forests
and sometimes in our gardens.
Many gardeners consider moss an invasive plant. Another school of thought finds these
simple plants add an element of tranquil beauty to the garden. Who hasn’t wandered a
forest trail, marveling at the velvety green blanket on rocks and logs? That same beauty can
be incorporated in almost any coastal garden.
Lacking roots and obtaining nutrients from only rainfall and sunlight, mosses can grow on
any hard surface, and are often seen on tree bark, rocks and other solid areas. As a result,

MOSS...
mosses are ideal for adding a luscious
green look to any garden or as a
sustainable alternative for grass.
Re-imagine the lawn. Political leanings
aside, traditional lawns need chemicals
to thrive, consume a lot of water,
require a lot of care and sometimes
just aren’t the right fit. Moss growing
in turf grass is often thought of as a
lawn pest, but that is not the case.
Moss grows in sites where grass has
difficulty growing. Rather than using lots
of chemicals to kill the moss already
growing there, consider increasing
your garden’s biodiversity and letting
Mother Nature take her course. Moss is
an excellent, low-maintenance ground
cover; requiring no mowing, thatching or
fertilizing.
Mosses by their very nature, have the
ability to accent many garden styles.
They combine wonderfully with ferns
and evergreen groundcovers in the
shady garden. Using moss in your
garden landscaping between paving
stones on walkways and patios creates
a sense of permanence and tranquility.
On stone fountains, ornaments and
boulders these heroic little plants give
any garden an ancient appeal.
Utilizing moss in your landscape will
require an initial time investment and
a little patience. It may take several
growing seasons for a moss lawn to
fully fill in, or for garden objects to be
blanketed in green. With cultivation and
care, moss will enhance and enrich
your coastal garden with many years of
beautiful rewards.

Fishing in Port Orford
The fishermen of Port Orford Sustainable Seafood are wild
about their haul, habitats, and heritage. By Kathryn Pickford
I
n a remote fishing town, on the most
westerly tip of the continent, a 40-foot
commercial fishing boat swings from
a massive yellow crane high above the
churning waters. Port Orford is home
to the only dry dock on the Western
seaboard. Boats are lowered into the
ocean then winched back to safety when
they return to dock. Out on the heaving
seas, local fishermen aren’t just reeling
in the catch; they’re acting as ocean
stewards and ecological trailblazers.
There were rumblings in Washington,
DC about the need for Marine Reserves,
to protect and preserve dwindling fish
populations. Concerned that their voices
weren’t being heard, the fishermen of Port
Orford brought together local scientists,
conservationists, policy-makers and legal
experts and hammered out a strategy
that would ensure that local knowledge
and local interests weren’t just heard,
they would become the engine that
powered decisions about the fate of
their traditional fishing grounds. Driven
by the philosophy that jobs go hand in
hand with conservation; that long-term,
multi-generational prosperity is anchored
in preserving the habitats they fish; they
created a plan that protected the entire
ecosystem, from the lowliest reef-dweller,
through land-based watersheds, to the
humans who make their living off the
ocean.
The plan designated the Port Orford
Stewardship Area, covering 1,320
square miles – 385 miles of terrestrial
and 935 square miles of ocean habitat,
where fishing would be permitted. It also
established the Redfish Rocks Marine
Reserve where all extractive practices
(fishing, crabbing and the removal of
marine life) would be prohibited and
where local scientists now study the
topography of the ocean floor, migration
patterns of local schools, underwater
flora and the long-term impact of marine
reserves.
It’s not just the designated fishing zone
and off-limits area that ensures Port
Orford Sustainable Seafoods (POSS)
fishermen are going to leave the ocean
well-stocked for generations to come,
it’s the way they fish. Longlining with

COAST
Top cities and must-see attractions (north to south)
ASTORIA
Astoria, the oldest US settlement west of the Rocky Mountains, was the first
commercial hub of the West Coast due to its strategic position near the mouth
of the Columbia River. Today, a riverfront walk offers views of the river, now
busy with cargo ships, rather than the sailing ships of the earliest international
traders. A restored trolley also traverses the river front, passing working
waterfront buildings and old cannery piers intermixed with hotels, pubs and
restaurants. The Columbia River Maritime Museum is a top attraction on the
riverfront. Victorian homes climb the hillside of Astoria and the top of town is
crowned with the Astoria Column, a lighthouse-like structure built in the 1920s
offering panoramic views of the entire region.
FORT STEVENS STATE PARK
(US 101 MP 6.5)
Fort Stevens State Park stretches from the south jetty of the Columbia River
south along a sandy beach where you can still see the remains of a shipwreck
from over 100 years ago. Encompassing 4,200 acres, the Park includes a
66 coastexplorermagazine.com
large campground, a network of nine miles of paved bicycle trails and six miles
of hiking trails that allow you to explore forests, lakes, wetlands, dunes and
beach. Visitors can explore the military fortifications that served to defend the
Columbia River through World War II. A military museum shares the history of
the Fort that dates back to the Civil War.
LEWIS & CLARK’S FORT CLATSOP
(US 101 MP 7.1)
One of the top sites of the Lewis and Clark National Historical Park, Fort
Clatsop features visitor center exhibits, multi-media programs and a full
size re-creation of the fort built by the Lewis and Clark expedition to endure
the winter of 1806. During the summer, and for some other special events,
authentically costumed re-enactors offer interpretive programs.
SEASIDE
Oregon’s first beach resort town is known as one of the Northwest’s top family
destinations. Family friendly shops, restaurants and attractions ranging from
a large arcade to bumper cars line famous Broadway street which ends at the
beach and the historic automobile turnaround. The Turnaround and Seaside’s
1.5 mile oceanfront promenade are top attractions in Seaside and are among
the Oregon Coast’s most recognized landmarks dating from the 1920s.
ECOLA STATE PARK
(US 101 MP 28):
A day-use park offering panoramic views of the coast including Cannon Beach,
Haystack Rock and other offshore rocks; headlands to the south and the
offshore Tillamook Rock Lighthouse. The main viewpoint area offers paved
walking trails and hiking trailheads. The Indian Beach parking area offers
beach access and additional hiking trails including the Tillamook Head Trail
crossing over the headland, six miles to Seaside. This is one of the Coast’s
best Gray Whale watching viewpoints during the twice-annual migration. Watch
for the frequent sightings of bald eagles and Roosevelt Elk too.
Long Beach
CANNON BEACH & HAYSTACK ROCK
This destination combines small town beach resort character with great
nearby natural areas and is known as one of the Northwest’s top art towns,
home to numerous galleries in this picturesque community. Oregon’s
famous Haystack Rock sits at the edge of the beach and Ecola State Park is
accessed from the north end of town. Haystack Rock is part of the Oregon
Islands National Wildlife Refuge and is home to the State’s most easily
viewed colony of Tufted Puffins during the breeding season. The tidepool
area at its base is one of Oregon’s seven designated Marine Garden
protected areas.

Astoria
Warrenton
Offers stunning roadside viewpoints from the edge of Neahkahnie Mountain
and several miles of hiking trails. A short trail leads to Short Sand Beach
and hiking trails extend to the end of Cape Falcon and climb Neahkahnie

Three Capes Scenic Route
(Southbound: US 101 MP 65.7; Northbound: US 101 MP 90.3)
The Three Capes Scenic Route follows a stretch of coastline between
Tillamook and Pacific City while the Coast Highway runs inland. The route’s
top stops include Cape Meares, Cape Lookout and Cape Kiwanda, but also
passes through the dune landscape of Sand Lake and along scenic Netarts
Bay. From north to south:
CAPE MEARES STATE SCENIC VIEWPOINT
& LIGHTHOUSE
Cape Meares rises 200 feet above the waves offering panoramic views and
a short walk to an historic lighthouse. The natural area includes three miles
of hiking trails and a mile long walking trail through old growth Sitka Spruce
including the uniquely shaped Octopus Tree. One of the coast’s best spots
for bird watching and whale watching during the twice annual migration.
CAPE LOOKOUT STATE PARK
A beautiful park with three miles of beach, a large campground and day use
area great for picnicking with more than eight miles of hiking trails through
lush, old growth rainforest to the end of the cape.
CAPE KIWANDA STATE NATURAL AREA
This sandstone cape stands in contrast to its neighboring basalt headlands.
The south side of the cape is a giant sand dune and climbing to the top
offers views of the unique sculpted sandstone landscape, sheer cliffs
and crashing waves when the surf is up. The base of the cape features
tidepools, one of Oregon’s seven designated Marine Garden protected
areas. Offshore is Haystack Rock, not to be confused with Cannon Beach’s
Haystack Rock.

CENTRAL
OREGON
COAST
Top cities and attractions (north to south)
LINCOLN CITY
The town of Lincoln City extends along a stretch of coastline covering more
than seven miles of US 101 and incorporates several unique districts, once
individual communities. The city offers abundant shopping including a large
factory outlet mall and attractions including Chinook Winds Casino Resort and
the Jennifer Sears Glass Art Studio where visitors can blow their own piece of
art glass.
DEPOE BAY
The small town of Depoe Bay is separated from the ocean by only the Coast
Highway and a seawall that runs the length of the town. Known as the Whale
Watching Capital of the Oregon Coast, the nearby waters are frequented by
Gray Whales that linger much of the year in the area rather than migrating
north with the majority of whales. Oregon State Parks operates the Whale
Watching Center at the south end of the seawall. When tides are right,
“spouting horns” on the Depoe Bay oceanfront put on a show as surging waves
are forced through small openings in the lava beds shooting water like geysers
up to 60 feet in the air. Nearby Boiler Bay State Scenic Viewpoint is also a
great place for wave watching. Depoe Bay is also home to the world’s smallest
navigable harbor and offers charter fishing and whale watching tours.
68 coastexplorermagazine.com
DEVIL’S PUNCHBOWL STATE NATURAL AREA
(Southbound: US 101 MP 132.4; Northbound: US 101 MP 133)
A short side trip off US 101 at Otter Rock leads to Devils Punchbowl a unique
geological formation. From the viewpoint, you peer down into the sandstone
caldron, likely once a sea cave whose roof collapsed. When surf is up, waves
roll into the cave opening, swirl and froth like a devilish brew. The small
wayside offers nice panoramic views and a trail leads to tide pools on the north
side of the punchbowl, one of just seven protected intertidal areas in Oregon
designated as Marine Gardens.
YAQUINA HEAD OUTSTANDING NATURAL AREA
& LIGHTHOUSE
(US 101 MP 137.6)
The scenic headland reaches a mile into the Pacific offering panoramic views,
Oregon’s tallest lighthouse and access to a beautiful intertidal area. Small
offshore islands offer habitat for seabirds and Harbor Seals while Gray Whales
are often spotted in the waters, even during the non-migratory seasons. A
stairway leads to Cobble Beach and one of Oregon’s seven protected Marine
Garden intertidal areas, a great place to see purple sea urchins and many
other interesting creatures. A second intertidal area, Quarry Cove, offers
handicap access. An interpretive center features exhibits on the lighthouse
history and the natural and cultural history of the area.
NEWPORT
The Central Oregon Coast’s largest city is home to popular attractions
including the Oregon Coast Aquarium and an historic bay front area that is part
working waterfront and part tourist attraction with shops and restaurants. The
barking of sea lions on the bay front docks frequently resonates throughout the
area and the blubbery beasts always draw a crowd. Charter fishing and marine
discovery tours are offered from the bay front. The historic and now trendy Nye
Beach district adjacent to Newport’s beachfront is another commercial center.
The Yaquina Bay Lighthouse is located in the Yaquina Bay State Recreation
Site on the northwest side of the Yaquina Bay Bridge at the bay entrance,
also offering good views of the bridge, one of the gems by designer Conde B.
McCullough dating from 1936.

YACHATS
This small beach resort community makes a great base for exploring the
Central Oregon Coast including the Cape Perpetua Scenic Area located just to

The recently restored Heceta Head Lighthouse sits in an idyllic setting on
a beautiful headland. The park features a pretty cove beach, a large picnic
area and a half mile trail to the recently restored lighthouse. On the walk to
the lighthouse you pass the keeper’s quarters, now operated as a bed and
breakfast. The viewpoint at the lighthouse is one of the best locations on the
Coast for watching, whales, sea lions and sea birds. The Park also includes
Cape Creek and the Cape Creek Bridge, one of the distinctive designs of the
famous Oregon Coast bridges designed by Conde B. McCullough. Picture
perfect views of Heceta Head and Lighthouse can also be enjoyed just south of
the park entrance at Heceta Head Lighthouse State Scenic Scenic Viewpoint,

FLORENCE
A picturesque community on the Siuslaw River, Florence is the northern
gateway to the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area and the city features
a small, fun to explore Old Town and port area filled with shops, galleries
and restaurants. Nearby businesses offer dune buggy tours, ATV rentals,
sandboarding equipment and lessons. The pretty Siuslaw River Bridge is
another of the classic designs by Conde B. McCullough, dating from 1936.

Seal Rock makes an easy stop for day use exploring. The wayside offers paths
and viewpoints overlooking near shore rock formations that are habitat for
seals, sea lions and sea birds. The stretch of sandy beach offers access to
tidepool areas.
Enjoy spectacular highway wayside viewpoints for a brief stop or spend the
day hiking though diverse scenic landscapes including old growth rainforest,
beaches and dramatic rocky shores. The Devils Churn Viewpoint overlooks a
deep narrow channel in the basalt headland where waves are channeled with
great force, booming and crashing as they collide with the rocks, then raining
down as misty showers of ocean spray. At Cook’s Chasm, visitors can be
mesmerized by the action of the rocky shoreline. When tides are right, waves
surge up the chasm, forcing water through a hole in the rock that erupts like
a geyser of spray and foam a natural wonder known as Spouting Horn. On the
rocky shoreline plateau just to the northwest of the Cook’s Chasm viewpoint
is Thor’s Well, a hole in the lava shelf where water surges out of the opening,
then drains back like a hole in the ocean, creating a 360-degree waterfall. In
all, the Scenic Area encompasses 2,700 acres connected by 26 miles of hiking
trails. The Interpretive Center serves as the hub and main parking area. You
can hike or drive to the Cape Perpetua Overlook offering a panoramic view of
65 miles of coastline. Tidepool areas can be accessed along the Captain Cook
Trail. There are also 10 miles of trails open to mountain bikes.

with a one-mile nature trail circling the lake.
NORTH BEND/ COOS BAY
The cities of North Bend and Coos Bay sit side-by-side south of the bay
that wraps around the two. Coos Bay is the Oregon Coast's largest city and
is an active port and the region is busy with ship traffic, commercial and
recreational fishing, crabbing and clamming. The communities are the gateway
to the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area for northbound travelers and to
the spectacular coastline and State Parks on Cape Arago, one of the top side
trips off US 101 on the Oregon Coast. The Conde B. McCullough Memorial
Bridge that crosses Coos Bay as you enter North Bend from the north is the
largest of the designer’s five classic bridges built in 1936 stretching 5,305

Coast Explorer | Spring 2014 77
Photo Record: Circa 1938, Department of Interior, National Park Service Photo By: George A. Grant, Courtesy of National Archives Records Administration
Looking Back
eceta Head’s lighthouse was first lit in March of 1894, 205-feet above sea
level and visible for over 21 miles. Located between Florence and Yachats, the
56-foot watchtower is situated midway up the headland. Heceta remained an
extremely isolated outpost until the 1930’s when road crews arrived with their
families and tents to construct Route 101, the Pacific Coast Highway.
In 1978, Heceta Head Light and Keepers Quarters were placed on the National
Register of Historic Places for its architectural and engineering significance.
Badly deteriorated by more than a century of extreme weather and disrepair,
the landmark was closed in 2011 for historic restorations. Reopening in 2013, the iconic Heceta Head
Lighthouse has been returned to the way it originally looked in 1894.
Today, this stucco brick bastion is a working lighthouse; towering high above a stunningly scenic viewpoint.
It is one of the most photographed lighthouses in the United States. Heceta Head Lighthouse State Scenic
Viewpoint (a State Park) is open daily during high season and tours are available by appointment year-round.
Heceta Head also offers bed and breakfast accommodations in the assistant light keepers house.
