Message from the President
Dear Members
I am happy to report that the club is doing very well. The attendance on Tuesday and Friday nights has grown tremendously.
Since June we have initiated approximately 50 new members. Some members have questioned the new faces on Tuesday and Friday nights
thinking they are all guests but they are all new members. I have taken a survey of the number of guests that have signed in on both Friday
and Tuesday nights and the number of dinners and pizza served and it shows that there are far more members than guests If anyone would
like to see that survey please stop in the club any weekday between 9 am & 12 noon. I am always there.
Our book sale did very well. I would like to thank all those who donated books and all the volunteers who worked the book sale. It was a
great success. Several customers commented on how organized the books were. All the volunteers worked very had sorting all the books.
We donated all the books not sold to Relay for Life Cancer.
A special thanks to Patsy DeVito for repairing our awning. Thanks to Joe Renzo, Pete, Bill and John for installing the awning.
Last weekend was spent ripping out the wooden shelves in the dishwasher room and installing new wire shelves and ceiling. This had to be
done according to the Board of Health. This was done thanks to George Zampella, Pete and Connie DiGuilio, Marie and Bill Luke, Maria
and Tom Woodward, Bob Thousand, and John LaCorte.
Our Fall Dinner Dance was wonderful. The decorations were beautiful thanks to Virginia and Mickey. The food delicious thanks to Chef
Dan and his kitchen staff.
Our annual Festa is October 7, 8 and 9th. This is our biggest fund raiser. Mike DiGuilio is working hard to make this a great success so if
you haven’t signed up yet to volunteer, get in touch with Mike and he will find a booth that needs help.
Don’t forget our Chinese Auction on October 15th. The tickets are only $5.00 and there are approximately 150 prizes and raffles. There
is also a special surprise gift valued at $1,600.00 to be raffled off. Doors open at 4 pm and the auction will start at 6 pm. Food will be
available for purchase.
We still have some seats available for our Jacks or Better Casino Boat Bus trip on November 3rd. We have 2 buses filled already and are
working on the 3rd bus. If you are interested contact Marie Woodward as soon as possible as the bus is filling up fast.
Our annual Halloween Dinner Dance is October 22nd. Tickets are on sale now.
On November 12th, we will have our Anniversary Dinner Dance. Tickets will be on sale soon. This is always a sellout, if you would like
to attend get your tickets as soon as possible.
New Year’s Eve tickets are going on sale October 11th at 12:30 pm. This will also be a sellout, so be there on October 11th to purchase
your tickets.
.
I was really touched by all the cards and phone calls I received for my birthday. Thank you one and all.
Until next month, stay well and God Bless.
Pat LaCorte, President

FERNANDINA ~ BIRTHPLACE OF THE MODERN SHRIMPING INDUSTRY
By Helen Gordon Litrico
Men have been catching shrimp for thousands of years, but shrimping evolved into the modern commercial industry in Fernandina early in
the previous century. The evolution was threefold: a change in location from inshore to offshore; a change in method from cast nets, haul seines and bar
nets to the modern otter trawl; and a change in power from rowboats and sailboats to fleets of motor-powered vessels. Here is where shrimpers put it all
together, and where the great international fleets of today had their humble beginnings.
In the early days, local shrimpers found abundant catches in surrounding waters, operating from rowboats with cast nets around Old Town,
Nassau Sound, up and down the Amelia River and around behind Cumberland Island.
The first marked change in the industry occurred in 1902, when Sicilian newcomer named Mike Salvador went out into deeper water over the
continental shelf, pulling a haul seine from a power driven boat to increase his catch. He formed his own company in 1906 and persuaded other Sicilians
to join him-notably his two brothers-in-law Salvatore Versaggi and Antonio Poli, plus Joseph Gianino. Times were difficult with shrimp selling locally for
a only nickel a pound, consequently, Versaggi traveled to New York in search of other markets. There he made valuable contacts at the Fulton Fish Market.
When he returned to Fernandina in 1912 to found his own company. Versaggi’s start was hardly promising. When he first shipped shrimp back to New
York, the selling price would barely cover transportation charges. The real boom in the evolution of Fernandina’s shrimping industry came in 1913, when
a newcomer from Massachusetts, Captain Billy Corkum, adapted the otter trawl to catch shrimp. This is essentially the same bag-like net system, which
you see on shrimp boats today. The first power driven boat to drag the trawl net successfully in deep water was manned by Capt. William Jones Davis,
a local bar pilot. Shrimp were so plentiful that the first crude trawls worked with great success. As the industry’s main arena moved to St. Augustine,
Louisiana, Texas, Mexico, Tortuga, Campeche, the Caribbean and South America, Fernandina contributed another important name-Harry F. Salman. He
pioneered exploratory fishing for Royal Red shrimp in 200 fathom waters. He was among the first in opening up Campeche fishing in the 1940s.
The founding of the modern shrimping industry was an international effort. More Sicilians followed the pioneers, Bassetta, Litrico, Fazio, Serra
and others. Other ethnic groups involved were Portuguese, Scandinavians, Greeks, Germans, Scotsmen, and some native families such as Hardee, Cook,
Lucas, Brazzell, Little and others.
P.S. Fernandina Beach is on Amelia Island just north of Jacksonville. It is a very pretty place, nice to visit and to reside. The above is a synopsis of an
article appearing in a real estate magazine about Fernandina Beach
