Chautauqua: (pronounced sha tauk’ wa)… of Seneca Indian origin; a name of a place, variously represented as titles in early (chiefly French)
writings and maps… literal meaning = “one has take out fish there…” … which may account for the relationship to Lake Chautauqua in
southwestern New York. Chautauqua, NY Is the site of the educational assembly started in 1874 and is still in existence today.
In the late 19th century, the Chautauqua movement became a popular form of adult education and entertainment in the United Sates. Using
noted lyceum speakers (such as Teddy Roosevelt and William Jennings Bryan) and local talent, the movement literally spread throughout the
country, traveling in caravans and setting up their tent performances in towns with primary access to the railroad. In the 1920’s; Wytheville, VA
was a stop on the Chautauqua circuit, reportedly known as the “Redpath Circuit” which ran perpendicular to the “White & Meyer Circuit” that
crossed the rural Midwestern United States, where Chautauqua was particularly popular. The Chautauqua lectures, musical feathers, dramatic
arts and children’s activities rose in popularity during the 1920’s, followed by its demise, brought on by the Great Depression and the rise of the
film industry. In 1985, the Chautauqua Festival was rejuvenated in the southwest VA community of Wytheville, and has been a source of
entertainment, enjoyment and education again over the past twenty eight years.
The Indoor Art and Photography Show: The annual Chautauqua Art & Photography Show will be accepting artwork
(paintings, drawings and photos) entries for hanging on Thursday, June 18th from 4pm-7pm in the lower level of the 4th
Street Community Center. Judging will take place on Friday, June 19th. Artisans entering work in this year’s show are
invited to an opening reception on Saturday, June 20th at 9am to preview the show and awards prior to access by the general
public. Artwork must be picked up between the hours of 10am – 2pm on Sunday, June 28th. Any questions can be addressed
by email at [email protected] or by calling Jen Otey at 276-620-0303.

Kay Sutherland - Painting professionally since 1983, Kay Sutherland, a Wytheville, VA
artist, draws inspiration from everything. Painting year round, she prefers the "en plain air"
technique, French for painting outside in natural light, which gives her the freedom to express
without hesitation. Sutherland describes her work as "never really knowing how a piece is
going to go. I just paint fast and furious, never imagining how it will look. Each one is an
original." Kay is currently working on the “dam” series, as she is painting near the dam at the

When country acappella band Home Free was crowned Season 4 Champions of NBC's
The Sing-Off, their victory was by no means the beginnings of a career for the five country stars
from Minnesota… rather it was a satisfying culmination of nearly a decade of hard work and
commitment to a vocal craft growing in popularity.
Founded by brothers Chris and Adam Rupp during their college years in the early 2000s, Home
Free had been perfecting their live show for years prior to The Sing-Off--performing together for
crowds in countless State and County Fairs, on college campuses, in front of Fortune 500
companies, and in theaters all across the country. It was their experience on the road that
carried them to a Sing-Off victory, swelling their fan base and bringing their homegrown country
style into a national spotlight.
Home Free continues to entertain audiences nationwide with their high-energy show peppered
with quick-witted humor that meshes Nashville standards with pop hits dipped in country flavor.
They arrive to town on the heals of their debut release on Columbia Records, Crazy Life.
For seven years Adam
Musick farmed, struggled,
grew, and succeeded. His
most noteworthy
accomplishment was the
heritage pork he raised
and sold to restaurants in
Nashville TN, Charleston
SC, and throughout the
Southeast. After seven
years, with experience that
only nature, animals, life
and death can teach, he
began to accept that music
is the greater gift he has
to offer.

Wayne Henderson grew up in the
mountains of Southwest Virginia, where the
sounds of traditional country music are a
way of life, and a personal passion for him.
His ability to transform wood into masterful
acoustic guitars caught the eyes and ears of
Eric Clapton. Ten years later, between jam
sessions, concert dates at Carnegie Hall and
delivering mail, Henderson finally finished
building Clapton's guitar - and the legend
was born.

“We, as humans, have a universal heritage that’s been almost entirely
eradicated, our goal with these songs is to try to connect with some of that
wisdom before it’s gone completely. And by connecting with that heritage,
there’s a lot of hope and healing that can take place.”
With Dangermuffin expect influences of Appalachia while maintaining the
salty vibes of the Carolina coast.

Not to risk inadvertent oversights, the Wythe Arts Council wishes to express sincere thanks to all
who contributed toward the success of Chautauqua Festival-in-the-Park.
We know that this festival would not be possible without countless volunteer hours. It is estimated
that approximately 1,000 volunteers support the activities leading up to and carried throughout the
festival.
Thanks, as well, are due for the unending gifts-in-kind. These types of gifts are abundant in
quantity, invaluable in quality, and often so behind-the-scenes that they can be overlooked. They
never seem to be motivated by recognition, yet without them, the show could never go on!
Finally, we dedicate this endeavor to our local and visiting festival-goers. Enjoy the 31st annual
Chautauqua Festival!!
