An 86-year-old Ingersoll man whose car collided with a train Sept. 28 has since died in hospital. Fred Napthen died in Alexandra Hospital Oct. 15 after being transferred back to the Ingersoll hospital from the intensive care ward at Hamilton's McMaster University Medical Centre Oct. 13. He never regained consciousness. On the morning of the accident Napthen was driving southbound on Mutual Street in Ingersoll and , had reached the railway crossing when the safety gates began lowering. Ingersoll police said he slammed on the brakes but the car sUd under the gate before it stopped. Police said he tried to reverse the vehicle but failed to get out of the way before the car was struck by a Canadian National "Railway train. Napthen' was taken by ambulance to Alexandra Hospital suffering from head and chest in~ juries. He was then transferred to Hamilton. . I I v Alex Edmonds Former mayor dies The Ingersoll man who welcomed the Royal Couple to town , during the first-ever Hoyal Visil on any Dominion soil by a reigning British monarch, was burried last Thursday. Alex Edmonds, 94, died last Tuesday at Alexandra Hospital. Mr. Edmonds was mayor of InI gersoll in 1939 when King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, now the Queen Mother, stopped in town June 7 for 10 minutes. A crowd of 15,000 gathered that day. "It was a glorious day," Mr. Edmonds said in June when the Queen Mother returned to Canada commemorating the 50th anniversary of the first Royal Visit. Mr. Edmonds, a printer by· trade for the IngersolJ Tribune, spent three years as a town councillor before being elected as mayor for two consecutive terms in 1938 and 1939. He was a member of the Kiwanis clut and sang for many years with the choir at St. Paul 's Pres- bytcrian Church . Mayor Doug Harris, who visited Mr. Edmonds, described him as being a ' "super guy; fun to see." Born in Ingersoll June 5, 1895, Mr. Edmonds is survived by wis wife Jean (Beattie); one daughter, Jean Godden, of Vancouver, B.C.; a son, Alex J. Edmonds, of Cumberland, B.C.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren and one great-greatgrandchild. Mr. MacFarlane was formerly of 349 Thames St. S., Ingersoll. He was born in Delaware Township, and had been employed as a linesman with the Northern Telephone Co., Ingersoll Telephone Co., and Bell Canada, and the Cable Co. in Oxford County. He served in the first and Second Great wars, in the Royal Canadian Engineers in Europe during the First War and in the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals in the Second War. He was a commissioned oflicer as an instructor in Canada in the Signal GQrps. Mr. MacFarlane was a member of St. James Anglican Church, and a member of the Brotherhood of Anglican Ch urchmen. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #1l9. Mr. MacFarlane had been very active in the Canadian Figure Skating Association as an organizer and a judge. As a member of the Ingersoll Figure Skating Club, he was for many years, a very valued member and had skated until recent years. He and Ilis late wife were well known ice dancers throughout the province. Mr. Macfarlane was predeceased by his wife, Phyllis (Butchart) (1983); and his brother, R. Murray Macfarlane. He is survived by his daughter, Joan Stevens of Oakville; granddaughters Sarah Jane and Catherine Joan; by son·in-Iaw Maurice Stevens; brother Dr. K.T. MacFarlane of london; and also by his sister Or. Jessie Macfarlane of London. Mr. MacFarlane was rested at McBeath fu~eral Home.
