History and Fast Facts
Fair’s have gone back in history as far as 500BC and originated as a
meeting place for traveling merchants to meet and trade goods. As fairs
evolved they were often held on religious feast days and were important
sources of revenue for churches, temples, and other religious
establishments.
The first North American fair was held in 1765 in Windsor, Nova Scotia and
it continues to operate today. In the US, the “Father of Agricultural Fairs,”
Elkanah Watson established the first US agricultural society and shortly
after the first agricultural fair. This was the first time fairs were not just for
exhibiting animals but for competition with prize money.
Today over 3,200 fairs are held in North America annually.
Erie County Agricultural Society
Established: 1819
Mission

War II caused the Fair to be cancelled
-Hamburg, NY has been the site of the Erie County Fair since 1868
-The Fair began as a one day even held annually in the fall

ANIMAL RIGHTS POLICY
The purpose of the Erie County Fair Animal Care Committee is to
address all issues of animal care including:
• Appropriate care and management of animals while on the Erie County Fairgrounds by exhibitors. •
Educational programs for exhibitors •
The philosophy of the Erie County Fair in regards to animal care and management •
Handling expressions of concern for animal care from the public The Erie County Fair consider ourselves animal welfare advocates
and require the humane treatment of animals. Animal welfare
advocates continue to expand their knowledge base about animals,
their behavior, and their management as science and technology
dictate. Animal welfare advocates celebrate the bond between
animals and humans.
In contrast, animal rights activists seek to sever any bond between
humans and animals. Most animal rights activists believe animals
should only be admired from afar, without human intervention. A
large faction of the movement is also pushing for animals to be
given the same rights and status as humans. Animal rights
activists fundamentally believe animals should not be utilized to
feed, clothe, assist, entertain, or benefit humans.

These campers get the opportunity to:
• Sleep in the barn
• Help out with chores
• Show an animal
• Work with a Fair food vendor
• Ag-tivities
• And ride in the parade
The two camp sessions this year are:
• Friday, August 10-Sunday, August 12

What is 4-H?
The goal of 4-H is to develop citizenship, leadership, and the necessary life
skills of youth through mostly experiential learning programs. Though
typically thought of as an agriculturally focused organization as a result of
its history, 4-H today focuses on citizenship, healthy living, science,
engineering, and technology programs.
The Four H’s stand for:
Head, Heart, Hands, Health.
“Those kids,
our kids, who
are fitting
steers, doing
chores, picking
apples,
showing hogs,
driving the
grain
truck…are
assimilating
the mountain
of knowledge
that it takes to
make dirt and
rain into food.”
–Baxter Black
4-H Fast Facts:
•
4-H is the largest non-school educational organization for youths
(ages 5-18) – there are over 1,600 kids in over 110 4-H clubs in
Erie County alone.

States
•
4-H was established in 1902.
4-H Members will be showing their livestock as well as hosting
competitions and family activities daily in the new 4-H Youth Development
Building
What is FFA?
FFA stands for Future Farmers of America. (Also referred to as The
National FFA Organization to reflect the growing diversity of agriculture)
FFA Motto: Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live, Living to
Serve
The National FFA Organization is dedicated to making a positive difference
in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership,
personal growth and career success through agricultural education. The
FFA was founded in 1928 by a group of young farmers who wanted to
educated future generations about feeding a growing population. The FFA
teaches farming as more than planting and harvesting but as a science,
business and art.
At the Erie County Fair, FFA members will be showing their livestock in a
variety of shows throughout the duration of the Fair.
FFA Fast Facts:
•
Today, there are over 540,379 FFA members, aged 12-21 in
7,489 chapters in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin
Islands
•
Former President Jimmy Carter, Tim McGraw, and Taylor Swift
are all past FFA Members
•
There are FFA chapters in 18 of the 20 largest US cities,
including, New York, Chicago and Philadelphia

4-H & FFA Livestock Auctions
Support WNY youth in agriculture and fill your freezer at the same
time. 4-H and FFA members gear up year-round for this annual
event. The preparations must be thorough, from feeding and
caring for the animals to keeping a detailed journal.
Each project animal is grain-fed making them the finest quality
beef, lamb, goat, chicken and pork thanks to these dedicated
youths.
Those purchasing project animals help teach the youth in
agriculture about business practices, the importance of agriculture
and sportsmanship. The funds raised from these sales will help
offset the cost of purchasing a new project animal.
While project animals are the perfect purchase for families, many
are purchased by businesses that use them for company picnics,
sell them to employees or donate them to various organizations.
